What a letdown! Waited over half an hour for my food. Had the ale pie which came in a pathetically small dish. It was laughable ! This has been the smallest portion of any pie I have ever had in my 64 years in this rip-off country. It came with a very small portion of chips and a handful of peas. No other vegetables were included. And my pint of ale cost just under a fiver. Felt I'd wasted my money. And I was still hungry after it. I will Never go back. No one asked how everything was, either. They just want your money!!!!

We arrived at 6.30, waited half an hour to order drinks followed by food. The starters eventually arrived & were very good. After 1.75 hrs our main course was served. The restaurant wasn’t even busy. Took 15 minutes to get 1 soda water. When the food did come it was average but the chips were soggy. The desserts came quite quickly & were ok but our granddaughter is certain that the correct pudding was not delivered. She ordered cookie dough but says she got the brownie.. the waiter assured us it was correct. Wouldn’t bother again as wouldn’t want to take over 2.5 hrs for a meal.

I very rarely write negative reviews but thought our experience at the Royal Oak warranted comment. We have had several great meals there in the past but feel that things have slipped to an unacceptable level. I booked a table for 6 people (5 adults and 1 child) for 7pm. We arrived on time. There was nobody in the restaurant part although there were a few tables occupied outside. They didn’t look very busy. A drinks order was taken and I asked for a bitter shandy but I was told that bitter wasn’t available as there was “something in the cellar”. The lovely serving girl didn’t know what the problem was but it was no big deal. After the drinks arrived we were then told that there would be an extended wait for food to arrive. No reason was given. We weren’t overly concerned so we placed our order . Four of us went for the Evening Set Menu, which said on the menu in the restaurant that it was two courses for £17.50. We also had a Kids meal option and also an order off the main menu. The starters that were ordered probably arrived around 8pm and the mains about 8:30 although not sure about that. I ordered the Steak and Ale Pie. When it arrived the top dome of the pastry was rock hard and it was impossible to cut through it. I mentioned this to the serving girl and she said that she would mention it to the chef. All the other starters and main courses were fine. The Kids main course was served on a red hot plate which isn’t satisfactory for children and the child in our group burnt his mouth on the baked beans. We were warned about the plates being hot which is fine for adults but not for children. We then ordered desserts and tried to order coffees at the same time only to be told that we couldn’t have coffee as the machine had been turned off. I didn’t really understand the reason given but it appeared to be because the meal took so long. When the desserts were delivered to the table (probably around 8:45) we were told that the Coconut Sundae with Coconut Ice Cream now had vanilla ice cream instead. Again no problem but it would have been nice to have the opportunity to change the order. When it came to pay the bill we were told that the Evening Set Menu was actually a starter and main for £17.50 rather than a main and a dessert for £17.50 which 2 of us had. The girl said that it wasn’t very clear on the menu and also nobody in our group had picked up on it. When the order was taken we had said that we were eating off the Evening Set Menu and it would have been obvious at the time that we were ordering a main and dessert rather than a starter and main. Due to the Steak and Ale Pie not being satisfactory we were offered 25% off the cost of the Steak and Ale pie. The bill was reduced from £168 to £163.81. We left around 9:30. The meal was for a special occasion and it ended up being a very disappointing evening.

We had the evening set menu for £17 from which there was lots of choice which you don't usually get with deals! We had the chicken skewer and hummus for starters, cheese and bacon burger, steak and ale pie for mains and brownie and cherry sundae for desserts - all of which were very well portioned and very nice! We were informed that there was a wait on food and to be fair we did go on a quiz night which we didnt know about but even though the wait was quite long in the end, I've got to give special mention to Eliza who seemed to be running round making sure everyone was well informed and happy!

I took my 97 year old mother this week and she is too old to eat bad food. I ordered a starter of chicken and salad for mum but the chicken was too tough. I had fish cake with salad and new potatoes. They served me chips and then changed them to new potatoes(which looked like they had come off someone else’s plate)when I pointed it out. The salad was bad insomuch that when I spoke to the supervisor she said she wouldn’t give it to her rabbit! We were offered free desserts, which we had and they were very nice. We didn’t pay for drinks(1 x lime & soda and 1x zero coke)but got a 25% discount on the meal. Really I should have insisted on not paying at all and I’m sorry that I didn’t. The staff were lovely so no complaints there. I will not be going there again.

Spent a lot of time here over the last two summers and always been pleased with food and service, except for tonight. Myself and wife decided to go for tea, arrived about 17.20 and the restaurant was empty, ordered fish and chips and a chicken burger.Food arrived within ten mins and seemed ok till I cut in to the fish, there was nt any,it was all batter! Admittedly I picked at the chips and peas untill the waitress finally arrived,I told her I was nt happy and wanted to speak to a manager to be told there was nt one available but would see what she could do,she returned to tell me she could take 25% of the fish and chips only! I could nt be bothered arguing so paid and left, needless to say that will be our last visit. Such a shame as it used to be a great place for food.

Not the best experience, very short staffed, food not the best. Very poor fish and chips. Onion rings were swimming in oil. Salt and pepper chips were just added salt and chilli flakes. Really disappointed in tonight’s meal. Having ordered a mixed green salad for a starter, which it said came with a Caesar dressing, I specifically asked for olive oil dressing as I can’t eat dairy. The salad came (after quite a long wait) so I dived straight in only to find strips of Parmesan cheese. I immediately asked the waitress, who was very apologetic, to swap it as I couldn’t eat dairy explaining there was no mention of cheese on the menu. After 5 minutes the salad came back out. It was as if the chef had had a bit of a rummage around in the original salad removing some of the cheese but not getting it all. Even after explaining I couldn’t eat dairy, salad 2 still contained cheese!!! The waitress was very apologetic and helpful, but shame the kitchen staff weren’t the same. Let’s hoping I’m not too sick over night after eating some of the original cheese without realising! If you have allergies, AVoID! I certainly won’t be going back!

Nothing on the menu for coeliac. That said the chef did make a special meal which was enjoyable. Limited healthy vegetarian choice. The service at the bar was pretty awful although the bar man was the exception and quite friendly. I just felt the bar area was shabby and needed deep cleaning. Sticky tables we had to prize the menu stand off the table, I initially thought it was glued on. The place was a bit dusty. Also the bill ar tge end was wrong, but this was sorted grudgingly by the bar maid. I used to live nearby and 12 years ago this was a great place to eat but it has gone down hill. I would like to thank the chef for making a special meal though.

Dreadful experience. Wrong drinks brought over to our table and when we explained this to the two young girls serving (2/3/24) they were visibly annoyed at us for speaking up. Food was average. When ordering a crumble for dessert they forgot about it and didn’t tell me. When I asked about it they only explained after asking a second time that it had been forgotten about. No apology. They clearly were avoiding our table as much as they could. Poor service. Would not recommend. Lastly when paying the bill to the dark haired girl on duty I noticed the blonde haired serving girl was on her phone behind the bar. Unprofessional. Go to the Red Lion in Dodleston instead for a far better dining experience.

Sorry but I did love this place , however we had a simple meal . Fish and chips and side salad . Fish small and thin and more batter than fish , tartar sauce minimal had to ask for extra . The salad had old brown salad leaves in it who hand perished some time ago . We complained to waitress . Few chips not enough for a £15 meal . And Nothing was done or offered . We did eat it as we didn’t want the bother of re ordering . With two pints and two large wines £50.50 . We paid in full and complained again , the helpful bar man said next time we come in he would do a discount but I feel like we had to really push for an acknowledgement . Poor meal and I really hope the standard improves as I love this place usually .

Went to the Royal Oak with my two friends last week. In arrival there was decent amount of parking and a busy atmosphere upon arrival. We went to a lovely area for the restaurant and was quickly asked for drinks. The food tasted lovely and decent sizes and the price was also very good. The lad seemed very new, which is fine and he was nice to deal with. Sadly my friend got prawns when he didn’t ask for that, luckily he isn’t allergic although doesn’t like it. We realised the same name to two dishes and the prawn one we think was just assumed. The only real issue was the allergies. I asked for a menu and was told to scan the bar code which I did. The website didn’t give any chances to add my allergy and then said “speak to staff”. I chose a burger without a bun which is fine again and was lovely but I was told to “tell him something I want and he’ll go check” because the lad didn’t have a clue what celiac disease was or gluten/wheat was. I just felt disappointed that I didn’t have actual options or a knowledgeable member of staff didn’t come to advise me on my safe options. A separate paper menu with celiac friendly options or can be made suitable would be perfect for staff to show, especially if they’re unsure. I have coeliacs and I did sadly notice my stomach wasn’t 100% after and was bloated all night, although I’m not complaining about this as I know risks of kitchens etc. Just a little more

We had an excellent meal here, as we have on previous occasions. As a vegetarian, I was delighted with the options, and went for mushroom and spinach suet pudding, which is rarely seen on menus! It was delicious, and came with loads of veg, saute potatoes and a jug of veggie gravy. My colleagues went for steak and ale pie, and scampi. Portions were large, except that there could have been more mushy peas with the scampi. A lovely meal out, can't wait to return.

My local pub for more than 40 years closed in May 2017 and after a few disastrous attempts finally opened a few weeks ago with new management and one or two of the original staff behind the bar. I called in for a pint two or three times and have still not met the new landlady or landlord. It appears I am not alone. Apparently they do exist but do not chat to their customers and very rarely do they appear in the bar. This is not the Royal Oak of old which attracted drinkers and diners from far and wide. It looks nice and fresh and sells good beer at reasonable prices but there is something missing. Everyone knew and loved the previous landlords - they were always there to meet and chat to customers, both regulars and passing. Everyone was made welcome and you knew when you returned the landlord and staff would usually remember you and that was a great incentive to keep coming back. I visited on Friday 15 December and spent more time with an empty glass than one with beer in it. On arguably the busiest night of the week there was only one person serving - lots of people “too young to serve” but too busy to clear used glasses from the tables. What a shambles. It's very disappointing and unless things change this great pub will never be the haven of friendship and good company and the centre of the village it used to be.

We booked on line for the restaurant but we’re given a tiny table in bar. It was a cold damp day and we were sitting in a draught. We ordered at the bar - 2 Sunday roasts. 30 mins later still no sign of food. I asked if there was somewhere else we could sit as we were so cold. No. I felt that they had no interest in the customers and didn’t care. After 50 mins we decided we didn’t want to wait any longer. We went to tell them that we were too cold to wait any longer. They then produced two dinners but we couldn’t face sitting in the draught to eat it. So we left. I could have cried.

I pointed out that it was in the restaurant that I had reserved a table, she replied that there was a large party in the restaurant and that all the tables were taken, I replied that the table was totally unsuitable, she just shrugged her shoulders with a couldn't care less attitude! Totally disappointed we left and took our custom elsewhere, thankfully the experience didn't spoil our special evening, we do however feel badly let down and after being regular customers at The Royal Oak for many years, and having just read other recent adverse reviews we certainly won't be returning!

After finding out we had booked the wrong date for our campsite for our motorhome we were stuck for somewhere to stay rang the Royal Oak and the lady couldn’t have been nicer and said we could stay she met us on arrival, and showed us where to park booked a table for a meal food was lovely nice pub inside, popular pub was busy on Saturday night, all noise died down at end of night and we had quiet nights sleep would definitely recommend

Very poor. If I was the chef who had knocked up that Roast Dinner I’d be embarrassed. It resembled one of those microwave roast dinners. Won’t be heading back there in a hurry

Very disappointing . The soup was the only thing that looked ok. Halloumi sticks where covered in thick, dark batter, as was the fish and the mains halloumi. Chips were also dark brown and some were crisps masquerading as chips. Glasses and cutlery were not...

In the area on our honeymoon we visited this pub. Food was excellent although the staff member got the order slightly wrong. Staff seemed immature, flirting and tripping each other over. Atmosphere was very “clique” with what we assume were locals who were using language that is unnecessary and loud. It was a shame as the food was fabulous but made to feel like we shouldn’t have been there.

We booked for a meal on our anniversary on a Sunday expecting a high quality roast dinner as this restaurant had been recommended by people we know. When the food arrived it had clearly been microwaved, the flavours were bland and tasted of packaging and the temperature was of the food was barely warm never-mind the hotness you would be expecting from a highly regarded establishment like this. It was overpriced for what we received with out plates mainly consisting of cheap vegetables not the quality meat and potatoes you would think of with just one burnt black potato cut into four with barely a drizzle of flavourless gravy to be seen. Hopefully the experience in the week would be better than this, highly disappointing

My friend and I ate here at lunchtime today, we felt so welcome, even with my little dog who was very reactive. A vegetarian and gluten free menu had been prepared for my friend. Our food was lovely and very fresh, extremely well presented and big portion sizes. Will definitely be eating here again.

Very disappointed with our local pub. First time visiting since new management have taken over. It was their bank holiday duck race event and I was made to feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome by an older lady who works behind the bar. She allowed a regular customers child to stay in the pub after hours and when I questioned this, she got very defensive and in my face. Before this, her and a regular customer were sat at the bar like a pair of high school girls giving dirty looks. Very unprofessional as she also seemed drunk whilst being in charge of the bar.

Wonderful food, helpful staff, reasonably priced - with my lovely friend Helen as my birthday treat. Slightly loud but that was my sensitive ears, and it’s a popular place! Lovely clean toilets too ☺️
