As this was recommended to us as practically the only place serving food on a Sunday evening, we went on mid afternoon to book a table. There was no one about, but a very strong smell of bleach and air freshener. We eventually found someone to speak to and with slight misgivings booked a table. We were invited to eat with friends so went back later to cancel the booking. When we went in, there were five or six men smoking (!) and effing and blinding!! What an awful place!

We were on holiday and ventured into this traditional pub because ,the pub over the road was only serving food to residents. After ordering our food, a very very long wait ensued . The meal was worth waiting for though. Top notch curry and my wife enjoyed her lasagna. Huge portion of each and, a massive dish of chips. Clean and tidy dog friendly pub with a small enclosed garden patio. A very locals pub.

We visited the Royal Oak several times during our stay in Presteigne, and were made to feel welcome every time. The bar staff are really friendly and attentive. We also ate here on the Wednesday steak night and the food was excellent. Just sad we didn’t get know who won the pickled onion competition! I can understand why this pub is busy ☺️

Went there for a quick drink with friends and encountered a dark haired young lady behind the bar who clearly did not enjoy her job or understand how to deal with customers. After a rather un-welcoming welcome, at 10 o'clock we were asked if we were going and then seemed to be stared at until we stood-up. As we left, the chap by the door (the owner, presumably) seemed friendly and unaware of the way his staff were behaving.

We went to the Royal Oak while away camping at Rockbridge on Bank Holiday weekend with a group of friends with children and dogs. We ate Saturday lunch in the undercover area outside and the staff couldn’t do enough from start to finish. They promptly sent the menu by email and we ordered in advance. When we got there the service was great and the food and beer was excellent. We loved the chips! Thank you.

Organised a meal for 10 people to begin with for a steak night and it grew to 36 people. Dale was fine in the increased number, So we had our meal last night for the 36 of my mates, the oak team did fantastic job getting everyone’s food out, as they had to cook 20+ steaks, along with vegetarian meals. The layout was on point and everyone had a really good time, My steak with peppercorn sauce was cooked just the way it should be brilliant Thanks Dale & team, same again soon 😁

Having visited the Royal Oak on many occasions I decided to write a review for TripAdvisor and potential Royal Oak customers. We have dined here evenings & Sunday lunchtimes & cannot rate the excellent food & service highly enough.A proper warm welcome when you walk through the door with the log burner ticking over & friendly staff (& customers).Steak nights, on Wednesdays are really good value & always offer great food. This is my local and it is a very poular pub. A family run establishment. Guest beers every week, a well kept celler and briliant staff. The food here is superb. I have never had chips that stay hot and crisp like they do in the Oak. There are specials nights, my favorit is Wednesday, Why? Because this is STEAK night. Melt in the mouth steak, wonderfull.Plus an A La cart menue of good pub grub. If you dont visit here then you will have missed a real treat.

Party of three booked for sunday roast as reviews on here suggested they were good. We were not disappointed. From our smug grins when we arrived to read the 'Sorry fully booked' notice pinned to the door, knowing we had booked, to the delicious home cooked style roast with such lovely gravy, we even took some home in a doggy bag! No skimping on veg or meat and all staff very attentive, despite being fully booked. The cost was very reasonable at £8ish. Have already recommended to owners of holiday accommodation we were staying in and left menu for other holiday makers.

We stayed here as part of our Offa's Dyke (Southern Section) walk. It was a bit disconcerting to arrive, soaking wet, to find the pub closed. However, there is a bell in the entrance hall which called up Brian who let us in and explained they are closed to the public on Monday and Tuesday evening. The room was very basic but adequate but there was no TV so we were wondering what we were going to do for the evening. Brian had said they would light a fire in the bar so after getting changed we headed downstairs. True to his word there was a lovely open fire, great for us and also useful for drying clothes and boots !!Sharon produced a lovely meal - we both had the lamb shanks, good in their own right, but accompanied by some of the best freshly cooked vegetables we've had in a long time.We watched TV, chatted to Brian over a few drinks and had a generally very convivial evening - the first time we have had a pub to ourselves !!Brian also took our luggage on to Hay the next day - the only accommodation that provided this service. We used local taxis at the other places. On the walk we also stayed in the Crown in Newcastle on Clun/Royal The Radnorshire Arms, Presteigne/Old Black Lion Hay on Wye/ Park Hotel, Pandy/King's Head, Monmouth/Castle View Chepstow - we have written reviews for each

On arrival we had gone up in number to 8, we were accommodated, nothing is too much trouble for these guys . The Royal Oak are so well known for their fabulous roast's, book well in advance if possible ... Claire & Dave (in the kitchen) have a brilliant sense of humour. Dale, front of house follows suit, there is a wonderful sense of family atmosphere. The young ladies waiting on tables smile as they go about their duties, again, nothing is too much trouble...Now then on the the 'roasts' absolutely marvellous meats, tender & very very tasty, vegetables plentiful & colourful (be prepared for a large lunch) you will not leave hungry and if you have room for puddings then you will not be disappointed!!! We called in the Royal Oak at lunchtime, hungry and desperate for our lunch at 2pm, as there was scarcely anywhere else open on the Bank Holiday. We enjoyed a glass of Wye Valley beer whilst waiting for our generous all day breakfast. When it arrived we tucked into it with enthusiasm, and it was just as if we had been eating at home: two rashers of bacon with loads of flavour, two fat and yummy sausages , a tomato, large mushroom, beans and a very good fried egg. The chips which came with it, while nice, were actually not needed, as the plateful of fry up was actually so filling. The service was polite, careful and friendly. We were impressed!

We have been visiting The Drover's for around 25 years. As a full Family initially, now just the two of us. Peter and his Team never disappoint. The welcome is always friendly and we do enjoy a modest pre Lunch drink in the cosy snug out the back. The views of the river are spectacular. It was a bit chilly to be sitting outside on the balcony but one brave chap did take his coffee out there! The food, well, you can't call it 'just Sunday Lunch! It's a foodie treat! Plenty of beautifully cooked food. Always hot and tasty. The quality is certainly there as well. Cannot fault anything and the Sweets are to die for! The atmosphere is invariably pleasant. A good mixture of Walkers, Holiday makers and Locals. Thanks so much for everything over the years Peter. Great place to stay. A friend and I cycled to the area and stayed here overnight. The owner is very accommodating and friendly. The room is a generous size with all the facilities you would want, and you have access to an outside deck area with lounge chairs and table which is ideal on a sunny day. The breakfast was also lovely. The location was great as it’s a 5 min walk from 2 good pubs and a post office/shop

Mock timber frame manor house retaining much of its character and charm. No lifts. Breakfast was choose your own pre-packed cereals with a cooked option. Dinner was a mini-taster with delicious options which we watched cooked on TV cameras. The room was clean but dated with an en-suit crammed in. High windows restricted light and views of extensive gardens and river. The staff were friendly and willing but lacked service training. Guests our age do not wish to be called 'you guys'.
