Very handy for our ramble between Folkestone and Dover. Friendly staff, good service, tasty and reasonably-priced food. My only minor gripe is that I just had peas with my minted lamb and chips, whereas my friend, who had new potatoes instead of chips, got carrots and French beans as well as peas. The staff must have thought that I was fat enough!!

Myself and a friend went to the Royal Oak today the place was busy and we had not booked but they offered us a table with no problems . There was a variety of food on the lunch menu and they also cooked something different for my friend who is vegetarian , the food was hot and plenty off it , the salad was fresh and was all well presented and tasty , the staff were all friendly and asked a few time if everything was ok ...which it was . The price of the meal was very good for the quality of the food we had . We will definetly return and I have booked for a few days time with my family to go . We have lived within 5 miles of this pub for 20 years and never bothered to go in as the sign outside offers main meals for £2.95 (was £2.50 until recently) so we thought it couldn't be much good. How wrong we were. Visited one lunchtime and ordered Ham, Egg & Chips. The ham was home cooked & delicious and the portion generous - typical pub cost for this meal anywhere else in the area is £8.95. Have also visited for Sunday Lunch (£7.95 for 1 course) choice of 3 meats (you can mix & match any two) and freshly cooked veg. This is truly a gem and is now our regular. True the pub could do with a lick of paint here & there but otherwise it is exceptional value. Tip: book regardless of day of the week. We have had to wait for a table on occasion. We have yet to try the Friday night Fish & Chips but will do so soon.

This was recommended to us but to be honest we weren't impressed. We booked ahead as we were told it gets busy but there were very few diners on the Wednesday lunchtime. The restaurant is very basic and the chairs are not very comfortable for larger people. The menu is limited to just a handful of dishes but at £2.50 a meal that is not surprising. I quite enjoyed my Fishcake, chips and peas but my husband and friend opted for the pasta bolognese and didn't enjoy it. One was almost cold and both said it was tasteless. We also asked the waitress whether anything came with the pasta and she just said she didn't know. We therefore ordered a portion of chips for them to share only to receive a plate of garlic bread with the meals! The bar area was quite busy obviously with locals but diners were few. I don't think I would bother going again on a Monday - Wednesday lunchtime when the OAP specials are on but other times may be different.

We went in the pub and were totally ignored by the staff so we approached one of them and was told we might be able to get a table in approx. 45 mins .we then decided not to bother . That was fair enough but we felt the pub was totally unwelcoming cramped and like a local club for the over 75s who did not want strangers visiting. a local pub for local people in the manner of the shop in league of gentlemen

We booked for a family meal on a friend's recommendation and were very pleased that we did! The pub is very old, quaint and traditional, clean and the food was fab. They also have a pool table which I eyed longingly but didn't have a chance to try out. Next time! Two of us had lamb, one had beef and one had pork, all of which were already plated up with the roasties, stuffing and a parsnip which was cooked perfectly . All the other veggies were on a platter to be shared. The veg was all fresh, not frozen and there was plenty between four. Our young daughter had the ham, egg and chips which she enjoyed immensely and we all tasted a chip( you have to don't you?) and they were fluffy on the inside and perfect and golden on the outside. We also had a conversation with the family on a nearby table and a local chap who it turned out had mutual friends and this all added to a great relaxed, feeling to the day. The chef came out to check up on us too which was a nice touch. We all proceeded to have a dessert which was also homemade and tasty. All for the sum of £50.15!! That included a drink each too.It was a delight to enjoy a meal as much as we did without it breaking the bank and with such hospitality from all the staff. I believe the mid week meals are even cheaper( if that is possible in this day and age )as we checked out the menu etc . We will be returning very soon mid week to try that out and at the weekend again, to feast. I will post a further review after each meal.

We have visited many times over the past 8 years or so and very little changes here. This is a good thing. It offers excellent value for money, so long as you do not require posh surroundings. The decor is tired and basic but the atmosphere is good, the food is freshly cooked and good value, and the beer is also well priced. It would appear that lunchtime is when it may get quite busy, but we have only visited early evening, when the bar is busy with locals, but not many are eating. Ideally placed for a good value meal on the night before you are using either the ferries from Dover or Eurotunnel early the next morning.

Stumbled across this place one Tuesday lunchtime while feeling (a) peckish and (b) in need of a pint. A decent choice of draught beers and friendly service. Took our seats in the restaurant part and duly munched our way through fish, chips and peas and liver, bacon and mash. Modest fare but nothing to complain about. Then the bill arrived...Total: £5. Yes, £2.50 per person on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays (I think I've remembered correctly). It's been a long time since I paid £2.50 for a decent-sized main meal. And Capel Le Ferne is a lovely little place, Beautiful views right on the White Cliffs of Dover. Nobody else there....in the last week of June and on a rare beautiful day. And close to the Battle of Britain memorial exhibition. Where is everybody? All munching chips around Folkestone Harbour I expect.....PS: There is a more expensive menu...you're not forced to eat for £2.50!

We were staying with relatives in Capel le Ferne so as recommended by them we had a number of meals at the Royal Oak. Firstly we had sunday lunch. There was a choice of chicken beef lamb or pork with a great selection of veg including cauliflower cheese all for less than £6 a head. There is a great choice of desserts. I had lemon cheese cake with lashings of cream. This brought the price up to just less than £7. All the food was really delicious. We returned during our stay and had dinner. We chose from the Two Meals for £9.99. I had loads of scampi and chips and my husband had an enormous burger and chips. My husband was really blown away by the little pairs of scissors in the sauce sachet dish so you don't have a struggle to open them. Really good idea. Finally the £2.50 lunches need a mention. A menu of 5 dishes including sausage and mash. Very good value and no-one would ever leave hungry the landlord Paul sees to that. The cheerful banter at the bar from the locals and visitors alike seems from an age when we knew how to have fun. Paul is proud of his pub and the service it gives its a credit to him. The staff give everyone a really warm welcome in this Olde world pub. Worth a visit.

2 pounds 50 for a lunch makes it the cheapest lunch we've ever had in the uk, this is why we should have known better what we were going through: it was like being in a hospice served by some hospitalised. We had good laughs though!

I'm not sure how to review this one. Defnately mixed, but ended up feeling positive. We didn't realise, until we arrived that this was their lunch for £2.50 day (really £2.50? Still can't believe it!) anyway, for obvious reasons, it's hugely popular. The landlord managed, with some juggling, to find us a table and after an initial frostiness, thawed somewhat and ended up being a geneal host. The locals were very friendly and the food, whilst basic, was actually good. One of the chefs had not turned up for work, having met a new 'lady friend' leaving the other chef, the waitress and the landlord rushed off their feet. They coped largely with good humour and efficientcy, it was all a bit 'carry on!' We left in good spirits (no pun intended) and it was a lunch that turned out to be one of those moments in time, never to be forgotten. Don't think we will be repeating it though.

A great little known country pub with hearty local sourced products, cooked and presented well, being here is like going back in time to local community pub, built in the 1600 so pretty old, but full of happy locals, very friendly and soon get caught up with all banter going on. Have eaten here a few times and always great. They offer a standard menu, with a specials board of freshly prepared local sourced fish and meats, a very well priced menu and 8oz rump steaks with real chips for £5.95. even have light lunch menu and Monday and Tuesday run a £2.50 lunch menu and really busy then so ring and book advised.

The pub itself is basic with no frills the food was good value, plentiful and tasty. Some of thvegetabkes were warm rather than hot but overall a decent meal. The service at the bar was a bit slow when we arrived as there was only one person serving. It the were very friendly and we weren't on a rush.

Popped in for a drink as part of a long walk around the countryside. Enjoyed chatting to the staff as the pub was empty at the time.

Really good, reasonably priced home cooked food.Steaks are always good and well cooked. Unlike many pubs the drinks are also very good value. No frills a bit spit and sawdust type place but well worth the visit, just don't expect posh!

Busy little pub serving food. There were 3 of us and we had the roast lunch trying the beef, lamb and Turkey food was ok but not special. However the portions were good value. The pub seemed to have a lot of locals which gave a good atmosphere. The barman and waitress were both friendly and helpful and the service was good and we did not wait for anything though most of the tables were eating. We will try somewhere else next time as there may somewhere with better food but when we have done this we would return to the Royal Oak

Called in this lunchtime and chose 2X beef pie. The menue said it may take a while as the meals would be freshly made. However when it came and we dug under the pastry for the meat, it was actually cold, the next piece was very hot. This suggests that it was in fact microwaved as the gravy was very hot. Needless to say we left the meat, ate the veg and left. we did not say anything and at no time did any off the staff ask us if we were enjoying it! Very disappointed!

If you are looking for a nice friendly pub, not too large which serves good homely food at fantastic prices, then you should look no further than the Royal Oak in Capel-le-Ferne. Where else could you get a good lunch for £2.25 and dessert for £1.25 on a Monday or Tuesday? Even on a Wednesday lunchtime you can get an 8oz rump steak and trimmings for £4.99. Then there are the themed nights like Thai and Spanish, all this and a great choice of reasonably price beers....you can't beat it!!
