The Royal Oak in Bridgend

Hadn’t booked a table but thy fitted us in. Had the mega mixed grill with blue cheese sauce. The steak was cooked to perfection medium rare. But what more than I could eat. Son had the rump steak with extra onion rings just about finished. Would definitely come again.

There for family dinner, most of us ordered currys which were nice. Those of who didn't were not so pleased with the meals they were servered and one member of the family could not eat their the food and left practicaly of it. Would tell chef, no amends made (money not re-embursed). I was servered wrong meal and had to swap it with person who had meal I order.

There for a family dinner 8 of us (5 of us ordered currys and they were fine). However, the others were not impressed with their food. One member of the family left practically all of their meal (lasagne was dredful and the accompanying baked potatoe was under cooked). They left the place hungery becaused could not not eat the poor quality. No compensation offered. Not impressed.

I was recommended to have a meal here. So 6 of us booked. Meal was OK. Getting to the bar to order meals wasn't funny.. Older people I felt sorry for, they had to stand and wait to order then carry their drinks back to the table. Oh it was a sautuday afternoon

i love the oak ❤️ fantastic experience, wonderful atmosphere and an overall phenomenal swig. cracking holiday destination for the family, good day out for the kids and parents as they have cracking beers on tap and wonderful locals. enjoyed my stay at the oak very much and i would return next time for a nice week away at such a picturesque place, rather than just the weekend stay we had with the little ones this time. overall great experience, would come again ❤️❤️❤️

Phoned when most other places were busy and were catered for immediately. Prices and food excellent. Fish pie and Lamb shank ,washed down with house vodka and a Guinness in the bar .

Go there with a lad I support and it's a lovely place. Great welcome and always seems busy, which is a good sign

Had dinner here while we are visiting Wales. We met some friends for an evening catch up all was going well until we order desserts let’s just say it didn’t go well. No custard then cold custard, wrong item sent out 🤦‍♀️ but to be fair the staff are very pleasant and it was all dealt with in good spirits. The food was very nice and the dessert when they were served correctly were

Was recommended by a friend so decided to give it a try and was not disappointed. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and the food was lovely - well worth the trip. We all had the Gammon which was delicious. I will certainly recommend it in the future.

Good prices and most of the food was lovely. My only complaint was the veg lasagne there was very little filling in it, it was mainly layers of pasta. I will go again but will order something else.

This was recommended to me by a friend a few months ago so we thought we’d try it. Most of the food was very nice and plenty of it. However some of the food was quite warm and was lots of fat on the meat. The staff were pleasant but the lady behind the bar was very loud and quite scary. So we’re disappointed.

Excellent Sunday dinners and a pint of Madrid is not bad either

Five of us went for Sunday lunch. We checked in advance that vegetarians could be accommodated with good food. The three meat eaters had a decent meal. The vegetarian food was appalling. First we were told as we ordered that the roast potatoes, stuffing and Yorkshire puddings were cooked in lard and there was no veggie option. We said we would be ok with extra vegetables to make up for this. At the table the waitress asked us if we would like meat gravy ( we declined and we were brought a very small portion of gloopy vegetable gravy. The so called nut-roast was a rice and mushroom patty and it tasted meaty as if it was cooked in a deep fryer which had been used for meat. It was incredibly greasy and I left mine. My daughter in law ate hers as she was hungry but said it was not nice. We were given 3 baby potatoes each and a spoonful of cabbage, carrots and processed peas. We asked for more veg to be told it was not possible. One of the husbands went to the bar and said we would pay for more veg but again the staff said they could not provide more! We all went home where I made deserts for everyone and cooked myself same vegetarian sausages and vegetables. The meals were £15 each and the two vegetarians left hungry and unhappy! Don’t go if you are vegetarian or vegan as it is truly appalling.

I used to eat here fairly often but standards have plummeted. At a recent meal I left an entire steak because it was like leather, definitely not properly aged, and several roast beef dinners were similarly inedible due to the beef being too tough. When the waiting staff are taking all the meat back to the kitchen bin it should be a red flag in the kitchen! But we had to pay for inedible food. Also there is a major attitude problem with the (?) landlady (?) It appears that she studied at the Basil Fawlty school of customer services; service is always provided with a contemptuous scowl and seems to regard customers as a nuisance. On a recent visit we arrived a few minutes late for a pre-booked slot, my sister apologised and explained that we had been delayed by a car problem, the landlady could be heard muttering under her breath "Like I need to know your whole life story!" This place really needs a good shake up to get back to where it should be.

Great value cosy pub fire what's not to like.

This lovely Pub has got to offer the best value for money, home cooked, food in South Wales. The choice of dishes available is quite amazing, the portions generous and the quality excellent. Add to this charming, helpful, Staff and a wide choice of well kept and reasonably priced ales and you just can’t go wrong. Not our first visit to the Royal Oak and hopefully we will dine there again in the near future.

When we arrived waited at the bar to be told our table that we booked was in the restaurant to just go in didn't mention that you had to order your food and drinks and pay first could see people coming in getting their food delivered in the end we had to look for someone to tell us what we needed to do The dinner came already on the plate beef like plastic looked like frozen veg no salt tasteless gravy not an experience I would like to repeat

Fantastic little pub, had the Sunday lunch and was beautiful! All four of us really enjoyed the food and lovely atmosphere, managed to squeeze Dow a desert which was amazing! Will certainly be visiting again.

Good food at great prices the steak was divine. Had fish and chips on Friday 15% discount with drinks less than £20 for the two of us. The fish was top quality and came with mushy peas and tartar sauce for less than £7 cheaper than the fish and chip shop. Brilliant.

Allways a lovely meal at a very reasonable price. Only complaint we were placed in the bar, no problem except from a couple of regulars who were speaking loudly four letter words frequently, I’m no prude but every other word was f@@@@@@. And did notice the bar staff made no effort to correct them

Had an evening meal here the other night. It was very busy and the place was packed but we got a nice table and a lovely lady served us. The food was very reasonable price and wow the plates were massive. Only Begay was the women behind the bar was a bit rude! A please or thank you wouldn’t go amiss.

Found this pub to be very dated in need of a good makeover very musty and tired looking, however the food was extremely nice very good value for money staff or pleasant enough.

This is an honest review. The pub was very tired old and dated. The staff were very busy but they could’ve been a little bit more welcoming. I was standing at the bar for quite awhile before someone acknowledged me. The food is very nice and very Reasonably priced and plenty of it. Overall places quite rundown staff need to smile a bit more but the food was very nice and the price was very nice

We had a fabulous meal here yesterday the staff were lovely and the food was stunning and wow, what a price. Extremely reasonable definitely will be visiting again while we’re in South Wales this next two weeks. I just wish the lady who served us behind the bars a little bit more helpful.

Great food, staff and atmosphere.

My family visited the pub for dinner in the summer holiday. We had Welsh chicken and beef curries, a chicken bugger and cheese cake. The foods are very good and the amount is very generous. Staff are so friendly, so we feel warm welcome. We will definitely come back next time!

So, it was peeing with rain & we went into Saltwater Inn. Owner says, you can only have a drink out (in the rain) as we are full serving food. Aye right ! Quick check on google and we try the Royal Oak. Absolute gem of a pub. Real ale & cider on tap, locals welcoming and had a great chit chat surrounded by Welsh rugby jerseys. Every cloud as it says….

Great menu with loads of choice. Very cheap and the food was excellent, there are home cooked options on the menu too. I had the homemade Corned Beef pie with boiled potatoes and gravy, which was delicious. My mate had the curry half and half, which was also delicious. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the pub had a good local feel to it. Have eaten here once before and will definitely return again.

On holiday for week and pub was recommended by locals. Went in for lunch on thursday and was so pleased with food and service went back for lunch on Friday, wish had found it earlier in the week. Food was excellent and really good value for money. Not the biggest pub and limited on space, staff very helpful and we was made to feel welcome and fitted us in easily on both occasions but only 2 of us, for larger group would advise to book in advance. Steak was superb and really good proper chips.

The elderly lady at the front of house must practice how to be awkward and nearly rude to customers on a daily basis, having had my 2nd pint poured into the same glass and asking for a small house red the answer was you can’t it only comes in one size ? And then a small bottle was thrust onto the counter. We had booked a meal and with a less than half full (week day) pub was told that we can’t sit there twice - very baffling- unfortunately they take your money first before you eat otherwise I would have left. All of the other staff was friendly and the chef / cooks served a good pub grub- would I go back - definitely not whilst that woman is running the show, she needs to grow up and get a life.

Nice old style pub with excellent deals and great service. Lots of little nooks to sit in. These 4 meals with 2 pints of beer and 2 soft drinks was around £52.

The food was great value for money. We went for lunch and had the All-Day Breakfast, which was exceptional for the price. Then we booked a table for the evening. Again, the food was exceptional for the price. The only negatives were the cramped spacing and paying at the bar on ordering. The service was very quick and very attentive.

Been to this pub many times but our last visit was the last! Only 1 real ale served and that was dark. Bar lady took ages to serve us and was rude. Further more because we did not eat we felt as welcome as a gorilla in a lions den. Dreadfull.

What a lovely revisit to our old haunt today ! We decided to have a bite to eat in "The Oak" and boy were we glad. Excellent service with happy smiling faces and a really good menu to choose from. We chose steak and ale pie and battered fish and chips. Delicious!! Cooked to perfection quickly served and delivered with a smile. Well done! you made two oldies feel at home. We shall return. 👍

Needs updating inside very old fashioned food was nice and good prices

Good location, and an enjoyable pint of Woosh bitter. The downsides were the music being too loud, with bar staff unable to turn it down, so conversation was difficult. Also, the smell of stale chip fat together with other unpleased odours mean that we are unlikely to return, any time soon.

Now as you know I'm a fussy eater, and a ble steak lover, we visited today I ordered the 16oz rum steak blue, I was expecting the usual thick steak not cooked very well, boy its amazing, I never eat the sides but even that was out of this world, the steak was either thinly cut to size or bashed out to size but it filled the plate and from start to finish was cooked perfectly, this is a diamond of a place to find and eat at, if you don't give this place a try you are missing out on fine dining on a budget, in these costly times it's affordable top end food, give it a go you won't be dissapointed I give it 10 out of 10

Came here on a Sunday and didn't realise the menu would be roasts only so were slightly disappointed that we weren't able to try other stuff on the menu. The prices were very reasonable but the food was just ok. The staff were friendly enough. Very much a locals pub not really the best for out-of-towners
