The Royal Hotel Heysham in Lancaster

We visited the pub after a beautiful walk at the nearby Bay where we watched the sun set over the calm silver ocean. My partner and I shared the most melt in your mouth brownie with a dash of thick cream and a raspberry companion. We doubled that up by sharing the most gloriously indulgent beautifully thick creamy tiramisu that truly truly tasted as if it had been made by the angels for a heroic warrior returning from an adventure in far away lands where he had fought villains and rescued damsels in distress. If you visit, I highly recommend the brownie-tiramisu power punch. (We also had the salted French fries as a warm up, also very much worth the trip). The staff were friendly and the place is dog friendly. Overall, 10/10, would come again. P. S. Just came back from the bathroom. The hand-wash and hand creams smells DIVINE.

Lovely restaurant (I didn't visit the hotel) with beautiful views, great food and friendly staff. The beer garden is possibly one of the most beautiful ones in the area, it appeared to be very dog friendly and had nice surroundings. Big area to sit and relax surrounded by greenery, fairy lights and heaters. We will definitely come back here in the summer when exploring Heysham village.☺️

Lovely place great food but I had ask for a drink menu inside they sent me outside I couldn't find it so I asked a man that was cleaning the outside bar who slammed a door and started swearing he then told me to sit down and said he would get the menu 5 minutes later a different man gave me a menu then my mother then asked if she could get a food menu then the rude man loudly said SHE didn't ask for a food menu to the other man making it out like I was being difficult even though it wasnt me that asked for it i have never felt so little and embarrassed in my life just because I asked for a menu. I was told he was a manger. Everyone thought he was shouting at me, He should not be working in hospitality if he treats customers like that. All the other staff was lovely and the food was great.

Lovely little village pub attached to this hotel which has a large beer garden which serves up high quality food while you are sipping on your drink in the sunshine 🌞

A really lovely room, great breakfast, tasty evening meals and very friendly staff, and the sun shone too!

A lovely hotel-nice rooms and excellent food. Terrific location, a minute’s walk from St Patrick’s and the stone-cut graves, and from there a nice walk along the sea cliffs.

this is a review of our second visit in 2024 This is our second stay at the Royal hotel Heysham Village,, this charming old building has been refurbished to the highest standards, little things likel the electrical sockets having somewhere to plug in your phone charger show the attention to detail. The location absolutely superb, the peace and tranquillity envelop you from the moment you arrive, and there are many superb walks close by and superb sea views. On arrival we had a minor issue with the Wi-Fi and Alistair the manager dealt with this matter personally nothing was too much trouble. I am 80 years old and was the beneficiary of one have their wheelchair rooms, which of course was on the ground floor and benefited from having a wet room for the bathroom. All that remains is to say a very big,, "thank you" to Alistair and his superb team for yet another wonderful stay, I know I was a high maintenance guest but you looked after me superbly, we hope to see you again soon. I would recommend this establishment without hesitation, as well as the ambience of the surroundings the food is absolutely superb, local produce cooked to perfection and served by pleasantly attentive staff. The Royal Hotel Heysham, truly a haven of tranquillity in a mad world. Set in the village that time forgot which is Heysham, a short walk from the beach this is this is a gem. They offer a range of rooms some with stunning rooms other less spectacular with not particularly good views but situated on the ground floor an ideal fold fogeys like myself (80 years old) as they have no stairs. Irrespective of view all the rooms are lavishly appointed with truly spectacular bathrooms. Alistair and Marcus run a tight ship, the food is also to be commended, it's a nice touch that they provide a Thermos flask with fresh milk so you can have a nice cup of tea in your room. We stayed for three days and will certainly be back, our room rate included breakfast which as you can see from the attached picture was a great start to the day. I recommend without hesitation.

Great place to stay and eat, vegetarian and vegan options available all at a very competitive price and for me being a real ale drinker 6 cask ales on the bar Thwaites ales, Gold was definitely the best

We booked last minute for a party of nine and the staff were very accommodating. When we arrived we were met by Marcus, who was incredibly helpful and informative. The service by Millie and the rest of the team was second to none and the food itself was both beautifully presented and delicious. Could not fault the service or the food. Would highly recommend.

The Lasagne was actually cremated, I should have returned it immediately. It was very burnt around the edges and the middle was dry, certainly wasn't able to dip my very lukewarm chips in the Lasagne sauce. Absolutely appalling for £15.30, I have had much better microwave meal lasagnes. AVOID at all costs. Management simply were NOT bothered.

We visited with my in-laws today, service couldn’t be faulted but the food was very poor. We had all chosen beef roast dinner which came out luke warm, had to send it back to have it re-heated and the beef was so fatty & gristly. We were all very disappointed & not up to the usual standard

We met up with friends from out of the area and their first visit to the royal for drinks. We had a lovely afternoon sat outside in the sunshine the staff worked hard with a smile on their faces. A special mention to Maddie our friends commented on her professionalism and excellent customer service she is a great asset to the pub.

Most of meals had gluten in , sausages and burgers both had gluten inthsi was for my friend .I ordered the noodle salad !! What a joke noodle salad description was noodles , courgettes , spring onions and carrots with a chilli dressing ! What came looked awful , looked like a pot noodle with 4 pieces of beef in , and lots of peas . None of the veg mentioned was visible. Looked like a watery soup . No staff came back to do a rain check on us so we complained at the end when they came to remove the plates . As a qualified chef a dressing is not a sauce ! The noodles were like mush . The waitress came back and offered me a free drink . No thank you I’ll go to strawberry gardens in future . Shocking place , shocking price 16.80 !!!!!!!! For a bowl of soup noodles

Lunch today at the Royal while I was visiting Heysham — I had a hankering for fish and chips, and what I got were THE BEST I have tasted for ages, seriously. Chips were thick and tasty and fluffy inside; fish had crispy batter and was really delicious (all served with mushy peas, tartare sauce and a lemon wedge, too). Just perfect, honestly. The pub has a really nice character-filled atmosphere and there were plenty of other things on the menu that I would be happy to try another time. Would highly recommend to anyone and hope to come again!

I’m not sure if it’s lack of experience in the kitchen but there were so many missing components to the dishes, they did get brought out when asked but that’s not the point My meal was lovely, and out of 6 people with starters and mains only one meal was meah! All others were lovely and plentiful.

Called at the Royal in Heysham because Morecambe seemed to be closed due to a visit by Prince Charles! How thankful are we. We stopped to look at the menu outside when the gardener urged us to go in because the food was 'excellent'. He went into the hotel to make sure they were open and we went in. We had thirty minutes to kill until the kitchen was open so we had a cup the most wonderful coffee and perused the menu. My wife decided on a lasagne and I picked the Cumberland sausage and mash with onion rings. Wow! Enough to say that hardly a word was spoken as we ate! Absolutely wonderful food. Well worth a visit.!

Came to the royal for lunch, was greeted by staff & shown to our table, the service was very good & all staff seemed friendly, polite & attentive. There was table service offered & the food was delicious. Will happily return & recommended

The food is always hit and miss, it’s our local, so did visit regularly. The ploughman’s lunch was awful, 3 pieces of stale bread, cheese past it’s best and 2 pieces of ham, along with a small pork pie, extremely overpriced at £17:50. Food was stopped at 8pm, the place was empty by 9pm. Won’t be rushing back, but hopefully it will improve as it is a good pub, just needs to get more people in and with a warmer welcome, it then may come back to what it was when it was first reopened. The service from the young lad is exemplary and hopefully he will go far, but leaving him on his own to run the entire pub seems harsh, but he does an exceptional job.

Friendly service from all the staff. The meal was very good, large and delicious portions. I had the steak and ale pie which was served with mashed potato and mixed green vegetables. The dog friendly hotel has inside and outside eating areas. We booked the indoor but outdoor was lovely to when we had a drink after our meal out there. Either can be booked for a meal. Decided to take a drive for the day to the coast. Visited Heysham previously and always found it relaxing. The Royal provided the perfect food for a lovely summers day. Great salad and a lovely refreshing glass of wine. The staff were extremely amenable and regularly checked back to ensure are visit was satisfactory. Did not stay so cannot discuss accommodation. despite the royal being a 10 minute walk I seldom visit this most excellent establishment. I was greeted by a friendly figure and voice ( my host wore a mask in line with covid guidance) who requested,politely. my requirements and escourted me to a conveniernt table where I was served some excellent quality beer my a polite and well mannered Simon (I think that was his name). An absolute pleasure and I hope to visit again at the next available oppertunity

Last year I was here with my family for my 60th birthday meal. It was great. We've been since, equally good. This time, oh dear!Seated in the restaurant area, but not peaceful, the. Expresso machine was next to us as was the cutlery tray. A request for somewhere quieter was met with 'everywhere else is worse'. The floor manager before, good. Tonight, awful. I'd like to say all the food was up to the usual standard. I can't. Shrimps and my steak were great, but my wife's pie was so salty she felt ill. Plus the main course was sent out without the starter plates being cleared and we had to hunt out our own cutlery.Don't know what went wrong but well and truly took the shine off a celebration meal.

We have visited on several occasions and the food has always been good. Good selection dishes, beers and cider, including Aspins English cider. Our last visit was on Sunday, just one problem. On a very hot evening the radiators were on. It was baking inside. We spoke to a member of staff who turned the radiator off next to our table and opened the doors to let some air in. Thank you.

We had a restricted family group visit to The Royal for lunch yesterday.Everyone of us enjoyed our different meals & the service was first class,our waitress was extremely helpful with everything.BUT & please note the big but,the one thing that stood out in a negative way was the following.Just before we went in at 1.00pm,group of about 8 young folk were escorted into the restaurant,none of them wore a mask,the staff member who escorted them,although wearing a mask himself,took them in past 2 notices on the door informing people not to enter without wearing a mask.You need to improveyour controls.

Stayed at Ocean Edge, but walked here most evenings for dinner and even lunch. The staff were extremely friendly and even remembered our orders from previous visits! Our dog was even given a bowl of water without asking. A very big pub inside and plenty of outside tables! Even do a Sunday roast but unfortunately had run out the time we arrived in evening( our fault left it too late!

Had a meal here while on a holiday at Ocean Edge Holiday park, I chose it based on TA rating. The good points were that it’s a beautiful pub and the staff were very friendly and attentive. The children’s meals were good quality also...better than most places! I ordered the Pie of the Day and found this to be very tasty and of reasonable value. My husband ordered the 8oz Fillet steak and for £25 you would expect this to be perfect however he thought it was just ok. The steak in the middle was cooked as requested however the outside was over-charred so he could taste “burn” on the outside. Plus the chips were a massive let down. We would return again but would steer clear from the steaks as over priced.

Can not fault the place food was absolutely beautiful and the service was good aswell would definitely recommend coming here I had the fire chicken and honestly it was amazing staff were friendly and easy to see if needed anything first time in there was recommended by a friend and well happy I came venue was cosy and suited the village it was situated in will definitely be coming back again soon

Had a family meal here last week and it was a bit of a mixed bag. The setting is nice, and it gives illusions of 'gastro-pub' with a very confident greeting from the manager, but went downhill from there, sadly.The booking system asked if we were there for a special occasion - we were, a birthday - but this was not acknowledged on the day.Staff appeared very anxious and it seemed the manager was micro-managing - even listening in to our conversation and calling over 'the chef went home ages ago' when we were discussing dessert (we hadn't been offered the dessert menu after our main meals).Orders were mixed up and brought out incorrectly (some stuff missing, some stuff doubled up), with the staff urging us to 'just take it' rather than offering to correct (note comment above about anxiety - feels very much like the staff were just doing their best to protect themselves).I ordered the 'Aromatic Garden Burger' as the only vegan option on the menu. I should have figured this would just be a sloppy, previously frozen, veggie burger but I like to give places a chance. If the chef has the ability to create a meat-free main meal that is both interesting and tasty, that speaks volumes in my opinion. In my eyes the idea of going out to eat is to have something better than you could have cooked at home, sadly The Royal didn't deliver in this regard.The decor is nice, Covid stuff was taken fairly seriously, capable staff trying their best but ultimately being stifled by management, and portions generous - but was generally left with an 'over-promising and under-delivering' feeling, so I wouldn't return by choice. If you want basic pub grub and a fully belly, then I should think you'll be very satisfied. Half of our party enjoyed the food hence the couple of star rating.

We called in at the Royal for food and drink on a lovely sunny day. The set up is very covid professional, safe and well run. We had a lovely meal with drinks and were looked after by Phil who was extremely organised with table service and he had a big smile on his face. The Royal is a busy place and everything was ship shape. The landlord, Alastair was hands on and I’ve got to say a wonderful time had by all.

Cane with a friend for food, we was seated after a table came free & was sanitised. Our waiter was Will who was very polite & friendly, the food was delicious & would definitely recommend, over all the service & experience was worth 5 out of 5.

I found myself in Heysham on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Royal was bustling and busy and being on my own I figured I may not get seated and understood if they wanted to capitalise revenue, especially with the queue behind me.But I was wrong, I was shown to a table in the lovely beer garden and the service was top notch.Food looked great although I didn't have any on this occasion.I will most certainly be back.Thanks

We popped in this week. Must say it was a hair of the dog situation and we needed some really good food. As always we weren't disappointed. Beautiful steak. Firecracker Chicken on form (I've tried to recreate at home but still haven't managed). Really hearty Lasagne. All topped off by a lovely host by the name of Sian. Thanks for looking after us

We go a lot nice places And this is one of them places. Management and staff are all fabulous ( they must have amazing kitchen staff to as food comes out hot tasty and prepared very well Hats off to you lot ) they have been working hard in lock down to make the best of the garden area new tables chairs and heaters It’s a fair service system WAIT ITS WORTH IT HEY AND LEAVE A TIP THEY DESERVE IT PLACES LIKE THIS ARE A LIFE LINE

Had a lovely evening at The Royal tonight. So easy to book online & the staff were all friendly and welcoming when we arrived. I can’t compliment the food enough, we both had burgers and they were unreal!! The service was fast but didn’t feel rushed at all. We’ll definitely be back as soon as we can - thank you for a lovely evening!

Sunday dinner was fantastic and reasonably priced, staff were great with all the covid restrictions. The manager on duty however when we arrived clearly didnt want us there even though the restaurant was quiet. He was rude and obnoxious but not just to us but also his front of house staff. His staff deserve a pay rise to put up with him!

Had lunch here yesterday after a long walk. I had the cheese & onion pie , husband had steak & ale pie. Both meals were excellent. The pub was very clean, all COVID measures in place. Staff were very polite. Maybe a better sign at the front to say the pub was open would be good. As we walked up the road we thought it was closed, until we saw a sign entrance through beer garden. The beer garden looked very nice, but sadly was not in use at this time. We will definitely return when in the area.

The food was ok but the entire experience was ruined by a very rude member of staff who was incredibly annoyed when we questioned the bill. He was rude,refused to give his name and refused to let us see the manager. Such a shame that one person lets down the entire staff especially at such a time when the hospitality sector is struggling. Needless to say we will not be returning any time soon.

Popped by here for a late lunch with my Mum. Ordered 2 Firecracker Chickens which were absolutely divine. Staff were lovely and the price was very good value for such succulent and well presented food. Will be back again soon

We are a couple. We did the walk from Heysham to Morcambe along the sea front which I can also recommend. Called in for a light lunch. Both my wife and I had flat breads. I had a Cajun chicken and even though it wasn’t on the menu my wife had a plain chicken version as she doesn’t like spicy food. Both of them were delicious and were served quickly. Staff were polite friendly and helpful and very clued up about the latest COVID regulations.

The beer garden is the best one we visit with table service and a lunch menu from the outside chargrill kitchen. All the staff are 5 star for friendliness and service. Thanks to all at the Royal.

The walk along the prom at Morecambe Bay to Heysham , has long since been a favourite however to conclude it with a cold beer & meal in the superbly refurbed Royal Hotel was a treat !! Brilliant job with the Beer Garden which is up there with the best I’ve seen ! The food was good & the Team were very attentive & accommodating in these trying times ! Loved it & will be back

Visited recently on a family trip to the area and had a fabulous meal. Very good Covid procedures - felt very safe. Food and drink reasonable prices and welcoming staff too. Absolutely top marks to our waitress - a lovely girl who dealt with a table of customers behind us querying their bill for 15 minutes extremely well!

Today I went for lunch with the family and we sat outside. We had booked a table so we went straight through and sat outside in the sunshine under an umbrella. The table was pristine and every member of staff was friendly, efficient and professional. The manager had everyone in order and Covid precautions were evident everywhere. It felt safe. The meal was lovely and was plentiful. The menu was not vast but lots of different things to choose from to suit all ages and tastes. I will definitely be back!

Went for a lovely lunch with our family for my mums birthday.Very, very clean table, surroundings and toilets! The meal was excellent and very enjoyable. Alasdair the manager was great with his staff and had everyone seated and served efficiently, the staff were very Covid safe. We went here on the recommendation of the staff at Ocean Edge. We had to book & could only get an early table as they were very busy. The food was delicious, good portion sizes. We shared a desert after as we couldn’t manage one each. Separate kids menu too. My only disappointment was that you couldn’t get the wood fired pizzas inside - they only serve them if you are sitting outside but gives us a reason to go back soon.

We came across this pub by accident when on a day out to the coast. The sun was shining so we were able to sit out side, so we can’t comment on the service in side, but out side it is excellent. Name and phone number taken before entry allowed, plenty of space between the tables and orders for food and drink taken on your phone. The staff, especially Jade, were very friendly, and very patient if you had trouble placing an order. Most of the tables were wiped down between customers, but not all, but to be fair, the turnover of tables was quite high and people were sitting down at them before the staff had had chance to clear them. The food was freshly made in the outside kitchen and was delicious. My husband had the pepperoni and jalapeño pizza and I had the Asian beef on a flatbread. We will be visiting again.

Laura is a credit to the Royal.Had the best fish and chips ever, the fish was cooked to perfection and so tasty.Served by Sarah and Phil who looked after us perfectly.An absolutely brilliant pub, well done in these difficult circumstances

We had lunch here today and enjoyed the whole experience. It felt safe - lots of hand sanitizer stations, and good social distancing. You were shown to your table when it was fully cleaned and sanitised, and the menu's and serviettes were disposable after use. The food was lovely. My husband had the Firecracker Chicken and I had the Teriyaki Salmon. Both beautifully cooked and well presented. The portions were good too - no room for a pudding! The staff were attentive and the Manager Alasdair was on hand and visible if needed. We will certainly return, and would recommend The Royal without hesitation.

Pre booked a table here and glad we did as appears you are sat outside if not however it did look lovely outside with the bar area but as was raining it perhaps wouldn’t be much fun with a 5 year old being cold. Staff were very welcoming and friendly on arrival. Tables spaced well apart so felt completely safe here. The waitress who served us was very friendly and had a smile throughout which was a delight to see. We didn’t wait long for our food and it was delicious. Sauces are given to you in little glass jars which is a good idea so you know they are safe however I was given one that had already been open and clearly dipped in so perhaps more care is needed here just glad I noticed. I asked the young lady for another as was open and she was very polite and got a new one. Once we had finished we ordered dessert, Upon arrival everything is well presented and perhaps appears a slightly small portion but I was more than satisfied, the Eton mess was delicious. Overall I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting the area. We will definitely visit here again.

The Royal welcomes diners to its restaurant &large garden with plenty of tables, oudoor bar &pizza oven.I would recommend booking in advance at busy times as it seemed very popular. We tried their home-made thin crust pizzas (chicken &chorizo pizza &ham &mushroom pizza) -tasty but costing £10 each!The Royal seemed very Covid compliant with portaloo for outdoor diners & hand sanitizers for all. You need to download their App to order drinks &food online -the waitresses will bring these to your table. Their draught Thwaites IPA was very drinkable. Well worth a visit if you are in Heysham, a charming village in Morecambe Bay!
