We had a weekend away at The Royal, Heysham to relax, unwind and treat ourselves. Everything about the venue is top class - the room, the food and the staff are fantastic. Thoroughly recommend for a first rate break with top quality food and surroundings. We also had some lovely forest/coastal walks around beautiful Heysham. Well worth a visit and can't wait to go back!

We stopped on Sunday to have a bite to eat and I had the Sunday roast. I chose the beef version. It came with Yorkshire pudding, some fresh vegetables, red cabbage, roasted, and mashed potatoes and gravy. The portion size was great. It was huge. Since I’m not used to English food, I felt it was very flavorful other parts with slightly bland. As for the service, we really didn’t have much service we ordered at the bar and at the only time they came to our table was to deliver the food.

Booked using their on line system nonproblem. Was later than we wanted but made do. Arrived with plenty of room in the car park. Quickly shown to out table ,the dining rooms were not full. Nice atmosphere and our drinks order was taken. Lovely waitress attentive and after bringing the drinksvtook our order. A varied menu and not to pricy. Huge Yorkshire puddings for two of us who had roads with plenty of meat. I settled for a large beer battered fish and chips which was excellent. I had this some 6 months previous and it did not disappoint. We also had sweets which was the only down side as they took rather longer to appear than what one is used to but appear they did and were most tasty. All in all I can well recommend this eating establishment and you can tell the staff had been trained. Well done Ps I only managed to photograph my starter and I always forget the rest as usually to hungry to remember

We had a lovely stay at the Royal with the bonus of being able to take our dog. All areas and our room were spotlessly clean and all staff very friendly and helpful. Our stay was outstanding all staff went above and beyond the hotel spotless our room was disabled access and dog friendly and had everything required cleaned and replenished daily..the breakfast choice is amazing cereals yogurts bagels and of course hot choice and all cooked to order..The lunch and dinner menu also has vast choice would definitely recommend the Gammon ,pork and fish which was what I tried..The prices on drinks and food are very reasonable so can definitely recommend either staying or just calling in for a drink and a meal..The area around the hotel is wonderfully so quiet and relaxing so much to see and do even if you need mobility aids ie scooter chair walker ect you will be able to get around with ease would definitely be returning Thankyou to all staff and management

The worst Sunday lunch. Frozen tasteless veg, thin tasteless gravy. Meet described as sirloin on beef, could have re-soled my shoes, tough and fatty. Really disappointed given how busy this place appears to be. Great location, clean, friendly helpful staff but will not be returning.

Very disappointing food… Had Sunday lunch with friends. All four of us agreed the food was bland and poor quality. The gravy was like water, fatty beef and dry nut roast. The Yorkshire pudding was like cardboard and vegetables weren’t any better… The only thing on the plate which had some flavour was the mashed potato. The roasted beat and charred corn salad didn’t impress much either! The food came out at different times, I put this down to us ordering separately however we ordered straight after each other for the same table so I would have expected it to have arrived together. The place wasn’t busy…! Nobody came to our table to see if our food was ok nor did anyone come to take our plates away. At nearly £18 per person it’s not good enough! The pub itself is lovely and in a beautiful setting. The staff at the bar were friendly and chatty hence the two stars. But it’s the food we came for so I can’t give anymore stars based on the experience today.

Updated review: July 2024 This was my second visit to the Royal at Heysham – we visited a couple of years ago and had a great meal in the garden - this time we were looking for somewhere to stay for a couple of days so thought this would be a good choice. This is a large pub with rooms (11 rooms I think) with an excellent restaurant – I booked online, which was relatively easy with confirmation received etc. Price was very reasonable at £120 a night for a large double room (an accessible room in this case, as this was the last room available – this basically meant it was on the ground floor with a large wet room, so don’t overlook it if it’s the last one left...) Check in was straightforward and easy – arrived about 5pm and shown straight to the room, which was in a secondary entrance to the main pub, accessed via a secure fob-controlled door. The room itself was great – well furnished, with a lot of space and a nice finish. There were tea/coffee facilities and water (milk was available on request) – there was also a mystery locked door leading elsewhere - that shall remain forever a mystery…. Booked dinner in the pub the first night – this was an excellent choice as there was a fantastic menu to choose from and everything, bar none, was exceptionally high quality. Beautiful arancini to start, followed by firecracker chicken (with a throaty jug of glorious sauce) and a huge slab of fresh tiramisu for dessert. Service was excellent and quick and everything was just made with care – the Chef here is excellent. I would eat here at least once a week if it wasn’t 250 miles away.. 😊 The food was so good that we went back the second night for more – lovely pork belly with crackling this time. More tiramisu. The beer was Moretti, a good choice. As you’d imagine, breakfast here - which was included in the meal price - was also excellent – a good menu of breakfast choices, including lighter options. Full grill for me both days, with fried egg and ramekin of beans. Also black pudding. Plenty of toast and good quality meat all around. One of the best hotel breakfasts that I have had in years. The hotel itself is well situated for seeing the village and as a base for the wider area – we walked adown to Morecambe one day and caught a train to the lakes - Morecambe station is about 45 minutes’ walk or about 10 minutes by taxi. There is also an ancient church and some ruins on the cliffs just down the road from the hotel, which are worth a visit – go at sunset, great views. Hotel has a large car park to the rear however, if this were full, the public car park down by the cricket ground is only £3.50 for 24 hours. Everything about this stay was faultless - really good and welcoming – definitely need to come back here at some point

Stumbled across this pub in a nice location on holiday. However, we walked in to be greeted "we're busy and tables are all book in the restaurant, you can go through there" a lack of guidance, we made our way (other room) and found a free seat. We did that, and were told then we couldn't sit there as well (room was empty, 30 plus covers) and rudely it was going to be full within minutes. (Not true, and unlikely.) We did what we were told and moved into another empty room, in fact the restaurant wasn't busy either. INVISIBLE BOOKINGS. I can see why it's empty at 7 pm on Friday, We waited 30 minutes with no interest from the waiting staff and left. (£60 -£80 loss) There are not great choices and not much inspiration on the menu, but plates or bowls on other table eating looked big enough. The patio and outside looks great, with an outside bar.

Booked for a family meal...the overall experience was very disappointing. Two of the meals arrived cold and were bland and tasteless. The bar service was poor...the bar was left unattended for a considerable time. Not one member of staff came to check to see how we were were enjoying the meal. We even had to clear our plates away from our table...just not good enough. It wasn't as though they were busy at the time of our visit. We may return to have a drink in the bar/beer garden but certainly won't be having another meal at The Royal.

Disappointed with the food We dined here a month ago and had a great meal. Sourdough with eggs, bacon and avocado. It stuck in my mind and as it was one of my dad’s favourite places. We went on the anniversary of his passing. The menu was different which was fine so I ordered the beetroot and charred corn salad with fries. The corn was inedible. It was dry, like warm and old and not at all what I expected as the main part of the dish. There were 3 tiny bits of beetroot that I had to search for and again, not what was expected. There was a lot of overpowering rocket. For the price, it was a total let down. The fries also tasted chewy and old. I could have made better at home. My husband had fish and chips that were overcooked. It’s such a shame because it’s a lovely place and the outside area is impressive. I told the staff about the food and there wasn’t even an apology. “I will let the chef know” It seems like they know that tourists will keep coming so they don’t have to try. We will not return

The Royal in Heysham Village served up a cracking Sunday dinner for the six of us today. The roast pork loin we all enjoyed was spot on – looked the business and tasted even better. But let's give a shout-out to Lauren, I think she was restaurant manager. She was very friendly, efficient, and made sure we had everything we needed. Can't fault the place based on today's experience and would definitely go back. If you're in Heysham, give it a try – you won't be disappointed.

We visited the pub after a beautiful walk at the nearby Bay where we watched the sun set over the calm silver ocean. My partner and I shared the most melt in your mouth brownie with a dash of thick cream and a raspberry companion. We doubled that up by sharing the most gloriously indulgent beautifully thick creamy tiramisu that truly truly tasted as if it had been made by the angels for a heroic warrior returning from an adventure in far away lands where he had fought villains and rescued damsels in distress. If you visit, I highly recommend the brownie-tiramisu power punch. (We also had the salted French fries as a warm up, also very much worth the trip). The staff were friendly and the place is dog friendly. Overall, 10/10, would come again. P. S. Just came back from the bathroom. The hand-wash and hand creams smells DIVINE.

The food is pretty hit or miss. I had a great steak when my brother visited 6 weeks ago. This time someone got ripped off, either me or the Royal. The steak was desparate, underhung and over-seasoned, not a great combination. Nothing a new butcher and a properly trained short order cook wouldn't fix. I'll go again but won't have steak, it's too unreliable and expensive for what it is.

this is a review of our second visit in 2024 This is our second stay at the Royal hotel Heysham Village,, this charming old building has been refurbished to the highest standards, little things likel the electrical sockets having somewhere to plug in your phone charger show the attention to detail. The location absolutely superb, the peace and tranquillity envelop you from the moment you arrive, and there are many superb walks close by and superb sea views. On arrival we had a minor issue with the Wi-Fi and Alistair the manager dealt with this matter personally nothing was too much trouble. I am 80 years old and was the beneficiary of one have their wheelchair rooms, which of course was on the ground floor and benefited from having a wet room for the bathroom. All that remains is to say a very big,, "thank you" to Alistair and his superb team for yet another wonderful stay, I know I was a high maintenance guest but you looked after me superbly, we hope to see you again soon. I would recommend this establishment without hesitation, as well as the ambience of the surroundings the food is absolutely superb, local produce cooked to perfection and served by pleasantly attentive staff. The Royal Hotel Heysham, truly a haven of tranquillity in a mad world. Set in the village that time forgot which is Heysham, a short walk from the beach this is this is a gem. They offer a range of rooms some with stunning rooms other less spectacular with not particularly good views but situated on the ground floor an ideal fold fogeys like myself (80 years old) as they have no stairs. Irrespective of view all the rooms are lavishly appointed with truly spectacular bathrooms. Alistair and Marcus run a tight ship, the food is also to be commended, it's a nice touch that they provide a Thermos flask with fresh milk so you can have a nice cup of tea in your room. We stayed for three days and will certainly be back, our room rate included breakfast which as you can see from the attached picture was a great start to the day. I recommend without hesitation.

Most of meals had gluten in , sausages and burgers both had gluten inthsi was for my friend .I ordered the noodle salad !! What a joke noodle salad description was noodles , courgettes , spring onions and carrots with a chilli dressing ! What came looked awful , looked like a pot noodle with 4 pieces of beef in , and lots of peas . None of the veg mentioned was visible. Looked like a watery soup . No staff came back to do a rain check on us so we complained at the end when they came to remove the plates . As a qualified chef a dressing is not a sauce ! The noodles were like mush . The waitress came back and offered me a free drink . No thank you I’ll go to strawberry gardens in future . Shocking place , shocking price 16.80 !!!!!!!! For a bowl of soup noodles

Lunch today at the Royal while I was visiting Heysham — I had a hankering for fish and chips, and what I got were THE BEST I have tasted for ages, seriously. Chips were thick and tasty and fluffy inside; fish had crispy batter and was really delicious (all served with mushy peas, tartare sauce and a lemon wedge, too). Just perfect, honestly. The pub has a really nice character-filled atmosphere and there were plenty of other things on the menu that I would be happy to try another time. Would highly recommend to anyone and hope to come again!

Called at the Royal in Heysham because Morecambe seemed to be closed due to a visit by Prince Charles! How thankful are we. We stopped to look at the menu outside when the gardener urged us to go in because the food was 'excellent'. He went into the hotel to make sure they were open and we went in. We had thirty minutes to kill until the kitchen was open so we had a cup the most wonderful coffee and perused the menu. My wife decided on a lasagne and I picked the Cumberland sausage and mash with onion rings. Wow! Enough to say that hardly a word was spoken as we ate! Absolutely wonderful food. Well worth a visit.!

The food is always hit and miss, it’s our local, so did visit regularly. The ploughman’s lunch was awful, 3 pieces of stale bread, cheese past it’s best and 2 pieces of ham, along with a small pork pie, extremely overpriced at £17:50. Food was stopped at 8pm, the place was empty by 9pm. Won’t be rushing back, but hopefully it will improve as it is a good pub, just needs to get more people in and with a warmer welcome, it then may come back to what it was when it was first reopened. The service from the young lad is exemplary and hopefully he will go far, but leaving him on his own to run the entire pub seems harsh, but he does an exceptional job.

ßunday lunch here was a treat and popular so booking is advisable. We were lucky as two parties had booked but not turned up. (They don't know what they missed). After several trips to this area my potted shrimp starter was worth waiting for. Hubby...

There were only two vegan options on the menu. A spinach and oat burger or a salad. I opted for the roasted squash, quinoa and beetroot salad. Big mistake. The presentation was terrible and the food was even more so. The plate came piled high...

Another great meal at The Royal. Roaring fire, tables well spaced and very comfortable. Main courses were lovely, Cumberland sausage was excellent, everything piping hot. Friend's home made steak pie looked delicious. Great, friendly and attentive service. Always a pleasure to eat there. Thank you.

We had re-arrange our booking a few times in the past 24 hours as people dropped out and then the weather wasn't good so we asked to come earlier than booked. No problem from the Royal accommodating these changes. Pleasant greeting and attentive, engaging staff...

The royal is usually my fave place to go for food in the area, however more recently I have felt very let down when with family members who were mistreated due to race by the same male waiter each time. I won’t be returning until...

Overall the restaurant service was good (very good choice of dishes for breakfast). We ate each evening in the restaurant. Booked table & offered water (it’s bottled so a charge). We also ordered a bottle of wine - on first night server was very professional & asked us to taste b4 pouring fully (not so the latter 2 nights). On first night we had a wait of about 20min from ordering to service (we didn’t have a starter on any occasion). We therefore expected to wait roughly the same time on the following nights. On the Friday however we actually waited almost 1hr & if there had been anywhere else to go we would have walked out. Admittedly our server was ‘in training’ & although she was pleasant & apologetic re the wait it was annoying. The last evening I decided to go for the ‘small plates’ & as I tend to eat more quickly than my husband we asked could his ‘large plate’ of sirloin steak be served first (given that server did tell us that the small plates would usually arrive first). Unfortunately my small plates came first. As we mentioned our request to (different) server who brought food they apologised & brought hubby’s steak as quickly as possible. Am not going to specify specific dishes as e.g. sauce I got with one of my choices was nice but too spicy for me & am aware that others would think it not spicy enough We didn’t think the prices of the food & wine were particularly extortionate but have had similar for cheaper. Given this we did expect some portions to be smaller than expected (especially on the small plates). The ‘specials’ were also generally good value as sides tended to be included.

Wow!! we came for Sunday Lunch. I don't normally go out and have Beef & Yorkshire pudding. As we always feel we make it better at home! Until now...on a parr with mine. 6 meals ordered...all hot 🔥 which doesn't always happen! Lovely desserts. I had Pear and coconut ice cream others had Sticky Toffee Pudding as well as profiteroles. Goes without saying but 'we will be back soon" .
