This hotel is dated, dirty and damp. We stayed here for 2 nights bed and breakfast, we were not checked in politely, just given our key to No 24. There was a ‘dirty smell’ in the room and the window had been left open which is a good job because it was that dirty you couldn’t see through it. The bedding was adequate, but the TV didn’t work. There were watermarks on the wall from a leak that had not been re painted. The bathroom was dated and had visible signs of damp. There also was an electric towel rail that had black insulation tape wrapped round the electric cable connection, with a PAT test sticker on it dated 2018!!!! You only need portable appliances to be PAT tested! The bar area was not the best and the staff ate their meals at the table in the bar and one of them even regularly took his blood pressure with a portable monitor. We came down for breakfast and were met with an abundance of opened large cereal boxes and uncovered fruit and cheeses which were very tempting to the many flies in the lobby area next to the ‘dining room’. We sat at a table but the carpet was that dirty and sticky the chair stuck to it!!! ….we didn’t eat breakfast!! It was the worst hotel I have ever stayed in the owners have left it to rack and ruin and it’s a shame as it’s a historical building in a nice little town.

I took my kids for an evening meal at the Royal Hotel in the centre of Tain. We were warmly welcomed and served our meals by Jim, who was courteous and helpful, and unfazed by two noisy and demanding boys! The food was great, with generous portions and lots of flavour. I had a very tasty gammon steak with pineapple. No kids menu, but the Hotel provided my boys with an adult main, the beef burger, split in two over two plates, with plenty of chips and veg. The kids weren't able to finish, and we had no room for dessert, but it was no trouble to Jim to box up their leftovers! Thanks very much and we'll be sure to be back again!

The staff were very thorough in describing the facilities, things to do etc which was somewhat surprising compared to the minimal interaction many hotels favour now. We were given a complimentary upgrade of room as we prefer a shower, so our room had a 4 poster bed, huge windows overlooking Tain high street. It had all the tea & coffee making kit, a desk and a vast amount of storage space (more than home!) as well as toiletries, iron, hairdresser - and yes even a trouser press :-) The bar we replete with large comfy sofas from which to survey the hundreds of single malt whiskies! The manager is an expert on the various bottles and the stories behind distilleries and the families involved. Food was beautifully cooked to order but well worth waiting for and it was generous as well as tasty. Shared a great laugh with visiting rugby teams in the bar, and was delighted to see the hotel serving as a DVLA test centre and also the local football teams clubhouse during our stay. Above all the open, friendly staff (and 2 year old Zara) made our stay fantastic - Thank you guys!!

I went into the bar for a pre dinner drink. No one was around and after several minutes I found a member of staff who showed me into the restaurant. I ordered a pint of Guinness and my main course at the same time. After some time, I was reassured that my drink was coming. When my main course came, I was still waiting for the Guinness; more than 20 minutes after I had ordered it, it finally arrived. I chose ice cream for dessert. Again, a long, long wait. Eventually, the young waiter explained that they had been swapping over the freezers and all the ice cream had melted. Presumably, someone was despatched to Tesco to replenish the supply, as finally my dessert appeared. In all the time I was there, only 10-12 other guests were dining. I can't imagine how they cope when when it is busy.

We stayed here for one night while we visited the Glennorangie Distillery for a tasting experience. The building itself is beautiful and clearly very old. On arriving we were welcomed by friendly staff however when checking our dinner reservation, we were told that dinner would be from a local takeaway which would be delivered to the hotel dining room. This should have been made clear on booking as we were looking forward to a nice hotel dinner - which is what was intimated on the booking details. Had we known the real situation we would certainly not have stayed here. Moving on to the room, we were greeted firstly by an extremely unpleasant smelling bathroom (solved by purchasing air freshener) and a room that was extremely tired and in need of proper refurbishment. The windows did not open properly and they were filthy. The curtains did not cover the windows and the blind not much more. Breakfast was plentiful, not the best we’ve had in Scotland however it was edible. Dinner (from the takeaway) was a fairy mediocre curry although there were many other choices of food available also.

Nice food but let down by indifferent staff. An order of rhubarb and ginger gin was delivered as strawberry gin, food was served but no cutlery until I asked for some; and a large serving of mussels “as a main” was served with 12 unopened mussels (about 25%) Any reasonably competent chef would remove the unopened shell-fish as they can’t be eaten. I didn’t complain as I wasn’t that hungry but that doesn’t change the fact. My partners food was great, so I guess we had a mixed experience. The other diners food looked OK. All in all if the staff had been a little bit more on top of things this would have been a better review.

An architectural gem in this wonderful little town, staff are welcoming and efficient, however once away from the public area's the hotel could do with some investment in new carpets and an interior refresh generally, some improvements have been made which are clear to see and have been carried out well. I ate in the restaurant and found the staff and atmosphere to be good, most of the menu is fairly priced but some dishes ( mainly steak) are expensive compared to the other options for dining locally. My food arrived quickly and was enjoyable, breakfast was great, I opted for smoked salmon scrambled eggs which were perfect. Car parking is good ( free) and street parking is available outside too.

We called in here for a drink on the way home. No one on reception and no one appeared when we rang the bell. Went through to the bar/lounge and although we could here someone talking, there was no one there. no one came when we shouted hello! Eventually I tracked down the person talking on his phone and eventually he came through to the bar. Was reluctant to serve us, more interested in his phone call, all in a foreign language. We asked for brandy and he tried to serve it in a tall glass and seemed surprised when I asked for a brandy glass. I eventually asked if his phone call was more important than customers! At that he put his phone down and served us. We were the only people in the bar, I'm not surprised. Wouldn't go back.

We stayed at the Royal Hotel during a driving holiday around the Scotland 500. We were greeted by Ivan at the front desk who was very welcoming and helpful. The room was on the second floor overlooking the main street. No elevator so you will have to carry your luggage upstairs. The room itself was large with lots of character. A four poster bed was a nice touch. Very clean, well appointed and comfortable. The service at breakfast and in the evening was a bit slow and could be improved. Food was okay but nothing to get excited about. For a couple of nights stay we would recommend this place.

We (two couples) reserved this hotel on short notice and found it very adequate for our needs. It was in a good location, staff were very friendly and helpful. There was no elevator but the front desk person was more than helpful in getting our luggage to our rooms. There was also off-street parking and the hotel appeared to be centrally located to other amenities. We dined at a pub not too far away and walked easily to and from. Our room had twin beds which were very firm and the pillows were quite flat. The room itself was average but we had another lovely full Scottish breakfast with haggis. I would tend to agree with a previous review that the hotel might benefit from some attention as it could be considered a bit 'tired'; however, it was clean and the staff were very welcoming.

Almost completed our road trip on the NC500 and we’d booked into Royal in Tain. The reviews are mixed on Trip Advisor but we thought let’s see for ourselves. We have a dog to accommodate so that’s a factor when we choose a hotel. We got a warm welcome from Ivan on reception. We had Rm 39. It’s a huge room with four poster bed, high ceilings and 3 large windows with lovely curtains, tie backs and the same fabric on the back of the 4 poster. Bed was sooo comfy, pristine bedding and lovely duvet. Spacious en suite with lovely fluffy towels and toiletries. We went down to the public bar with the dog and had a bottle of wine. They had Shiraz on the wine list- but sold out. Malbec- sold out. We were given a bottle of Cote du Rhône at the same price as Shiraz. Nice and comfy public bar with a huge array of whiskies. We decided to eat in the restaurant so doggy had to stay in the bedroom. The menu is good and I chose the homemade mushroom soup and hubby the breaded Brie. Both were great. I chose the chicken and Caesar salad and hubby the salmon with risotto and creamy tomato sauce. Hubby loved his dish, my Caesar salad was huge - but not a true Caesar salad. It had tomato, red onion, and cucumber in it. However- it was delicious!! Loads of Caesar dressing and Parmesan. Here’s the queer thing- we asked for another bottle of cote de Rhône (remember the Shiraz and Malbec had sold out) - and surprisingly they ‘found’ a bottle of the Shiraz!! We were past caring!!There was no noise in our room from the large group in the dining room so we fell asleep quickly. I was awoken by an argument somewhere on the corridor in the early hours of the morning but it went quiet quickly. Breakfast was good. Nice selection of cereals, fruit juices, yoghurt, fruit. Make your own toast. I had bacon, tomato and mushrooms. Hubby had smoked salmon (loads!!) and mushrooms. What wasn’t so good? The bed whilst sooo comfy squeaked even if you turned over. If you had a shower, it took ages to get hot water - and god forbid if someone turns on the cold tap to clean their teeth whilst you are showering!! You get scalded!! And if you are 6ft tall and showering the ceiling in the bathroom means you have to stoop. The soda in the bedroom was not great- it’s the first thing you see and it lets an otherwise great room down. Replace it!! Sachets of sugar/ mayonnaise on the table let it down. So it gets a ‘Good’ from us. They are trying hard in a lovely old historic hotel. Give them a chance!!

Came to Royal one Thursday night in August. Initially staff very nice and friendly - Ayaz in reception and lady in restaurant. Ordered rare rib eye steak which unfortunately had to be put back as was cremated. 2nd one not great either to which lady was very apologetic and embarrassed. We got free drinks and then did not pay for steak. I asked if it was young trainee chef on was told no it was the head chef!!! have never know a chef who could not cook steak. As I was coming thru Tain again on the Sunday I asked if there was anywhere I could get a decent steak and the lady said please come back Sunday night as Adrian will be on and you will not be disappointed. I was bit apprehensive but oh my goodness that steak was worth double what i paid. It melted in my mouth, was presented well and overall great meal so glad i came back. Only thing I could say about this night was young girl on service was not as attentive and lady on the night previous. I would come back but will certainly be asking if Adrian is cooking.

The Royal is a tired old Olde Worlde hotel in the heart of Tain aka Glenmorangie-land. Sadly the wonderful old antiques are knocked about, chipped and cracked; the carpets threadbare; and there's tacky signs stuck all over the place. It' s a b real shame that this iconic building is treated so badly by its management.

I'm a local to Tain. This used to be the well known place to go for food. The menu has gone from a vibrant, full of choice menu, to sub standard pub grub choice. It's so sad. Waited 25 minutes for my starter (breaded Brie that takes most 5 mins). Asked the waitress where is was, she was absolutely lovely about it, but clearly embarrassed. Starter was really beautiful. Then had to wait another 15 minutes for our main. BBQ chicken which turned out to be a curry sauce because the "chef was experimenting with it". Absolutely ridiculous. The whole plate had been sitting for ages under the hot plate in the kitchen as the salad was wilted and the coleslaw was warm and runny. It's was horrible. I'm so sad about this and I felt I needed to leave this review. This was such a vibrant place to go for consistently good food, but now it's no more than sub standard pub grub. The lovely waitress was trying her best and was friendly, but just no direction in the place and that was evident. Save your money and go elsewhere.

We were stopped in the lobby and informed that dogs could not go in to the restaurant. We explained my dog was an Assistance Dog (she was in full uniform - a Hearing Dog) but we were just having a drink in the bar. Although apologising profusely and being no doubt very sincere - the Staff Member said that 'folk get funny about dogs in the restaurant and we don't even allow Guide Dogs in there.' Words fail me. We didn't make a fuss but did explain that Assistance Dogs under the law (Equality Act 2010) that venues are obliged to accommodate recipients and their dogs or 'make reasonable adjustments'. The menu was a decent size and seemed reasonably priced for what you got, I think it was £15 or there about for 3 courses. When I received my roast, the meat was cold along with the tatties and the gravy was lumpy, really the only redeeming feature was the cheesecake at the end.

I work in a hotel so i'm pretty lenient if the service/food isn't the best but the main reason I wrote this is thanks to the kitchen staff. We walked down the side road and at the fire door there was 2/3 of them sitting on the floor smoking, IN THEIR WHITES!! I smoke myself so you can't say i'm being bias or whatever. This is just plain disgusting. I'd imagine this puts off alot of people from coming in if you walk towards the door and you see the chef having a fag in the middle of lunch service.Anyway.... I've been here a few times, mainly for lunch and I've never left feeling overly happy. We were here on Sunday and ended up waiting over half an hour for our starters. Yes we were a table of 10 but there was only 3 other tables of 2 in and one of them came in after us and finished their 3 course meal before we got our mains. To be fair to them the food was pretty good, just shame it took so long. However this is not what i have experienced on previous occasions. Previous times I have been with friends. Once the baguette i ordered was so hard I couldn't bite into it and the toast on the toasted sandwich had obviously been reheated as it just crumbled and had to eat it with a knife a fork (once i'd actually found a clean one on the table) this along with lipstick on glasses, burnt desserts covered up with ice cream and marks on the side plates is pretty bad. Can't say I or any of my family/friends will be back any time soon.

Noi abbiamo mangiato piatti a base di carne (filetto e pollo). Piatti completi con verdure a contorno. Qualità media e prezzi in linea.

We came here for a family birthday. The two young male waiters were very attentive and friendly when we arrived - taking our food and drink orders. The drink arrived immediately but the food took quite some time - possibly as we were a largish group. When the food did arrive all I can say is it was absolutely incredible and tasty. I had chicken with white pudding and it was delicious - the mushroom sauce was amazing. Some of the party had deserts and again they were extremely tasty just took along time for them to arrive. We would come back - my only criticism is purely the time it took to get the food out across the three courses. Thanks :)

Have not visited the Royal Hotel for several years so was not surprised to see that it appears to have new management/owners. Staff extremely courteous and polite. Dinner booked for 6pm. Dinner arrived around 6.45. Advised that there was a bus party in for high tea this was reason for delay.! Chicken stuffed with haggis on a bed of mash and neeps with fresh veg was delicious. Barbecued chicken with salad and chips was also very tasty and plentiful. two sweets were delicious, 1 cranachan and one fruit crumble with custard. Crumble was delicious but in short supply. Chairs at tables not very comfortable as they make you sit very upright. We watched the Tain Pipe Band play on the High Street, which was a definite bonus. Overall a very pleasant evening thanks to Staff at Royal Hotel Tain.

We had a wonderful dinner here. The staff were cry accommodating, as my mum has a dairy allergy, and I have a garlic allergy. Our dinners were delicious, and even though they had a big function on that night, dinner was timely and we were not rushed in any way. The sweet potato purée is to die for! I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Gewoon goed!

Just got back from a 3 night stay at The Royal Hotel. The service at this hotel was excellent. The food was really good, great ingredients and cooked to perfection by Chef Michael. One night I ordered Lamb Cutlets and wanted a Red Wine Jus (which was not on the menu). I have eaten in places that then say "Sorry we can't do that...we do have Peppercorn though" The red wine jus was gorgeous and certainly the staff were more than happy to grant my request. Peter who served our table most nights was extremely attentive and did not rush us at all. Bailey was very professional and if he didn't know an answer to a question made sure that he went and asked. Brian in the Bar has a wonderful knowledge of the area and has a wonderful sense of humour. All the staff are so friendly and go that extra mile to make sure you have a fabulous stay. The General Manager Ivan gave such a wonderful welcome on arrival and made sure that everything was tip top. The owner Ayaz is always on hand, a mind of information and for anyone who is interested in knowing about whisky he is your man. Would certainly recommend a stay here or at least pop in for a great meal. Tain is quaint and a great place to just unwind.

We expected a pub dinner but were impressed with the quality of both the food and the service. The old hotel has been done up really nicely and the food was more restaurant standard at close to pub prices. Would definitely recommend.

Went in with my partner for late afternoon dinner- food was lovely but service was def not with a smile. The restaurant was not busy - only about 3 other diners. The waitress was the most sullen faced woman we have ever experienced in a hospitality setting . No smiles at all when taking our order indeed it felt like she was scowling at us - this did not improve - and after first course we were considering leaving but were to hungry - even more annoying my partner left a tip!! He felt to scared not to!! Despite food being nice we wouldn't be going back - couldn't face that sullen woman again - Carnegie lodge hotel in tain much better for food and service 100 times better!

I booked ahead and Ivan reserved a great table. We had flown up from Bristol that day and met our daughter who lives locally, here. Because we'd be apart on the actual day, it was meant to be our own little Christmas and it met all our expectations and our hopes. What a really nice, down to earth, unpretentious, and friendly place. Good atmosphere, good service good food and plenty of it. We could have stayed all night. We will make the Royal a regular place to eat on our future trips to Sutherland, it was a delight in every way. Reasonable too - highly recommended.

Consistent, top quality food, hearty food :) I love this place for reliability and quality. Lovely portions and good value for money. Excellent selections on the menu. As a frequent eater out its one of my favourites if not my favourite place to eat. One thing tho they could do with a new cheesecake which has been the cheesecake of the year rather than the day but I can't help but order it anyway as I do love it but variety is the spice of life. :)

Called in for lunch while shopping in Tain. What a lovely surprise. Restaurant was exceptionally clean, waitress, Leighanne was very pleasant and friendly. We had jacket potatoes, one with chicken and mayonnaise which was lovely and one with coronation chicken which was very nice but wasn't a true coronation chicken but tasty all the same. Both served with a very nice side salad. With 2 hot drinks bill was £15.00 which was excellent value. Will definitely call in for dinner next time we are on our way home from Inverness. Wish we had tried it sooner.

This was my first visit with my wife and in-laws on a Saturday night. The pictures and tartan carpet showed us that this was a traditional, unpretentious but immaculately turned out hotel and restaurant. The staff were incredibly pleasant and efficient, showing humour and interest in our visit. The staple dishes were there (seafood, pies and lasagne) were all present, so a place for the more adventurous diner, but it tasted excellent and was reasonably priced. We will go there again when we visit up north.

The staff were so attentive to my needs as they realised I had a bad Back and assisted me in every way. They made sure I was comfortable with my room, they carried my cases up and down the stairs, I could not have been looked after any better. The food was fab, chicken with haggis etc you have to try and that sauce, The Sticky Toffee Pudding was a delight I had to have it both nights. Maggie the waitress was a tremendous help with local knowledge and so was her daughter I lost my lead to my tablet I used for work and they searched in the bins in case I might have dropped it in there, nothing was too much trouble. Will defo be back when in the area and will recommend this establishment to my firm when sending any other collegues to the area. A+++++

Cousins had travelled a great distance to be together for this lunch. Obviously everyone had different tastes. One person had haggis, another a curry, another a seafood salad and one probably had something like lamb chops. What a great menu. Arrangements were made to put this large group off to one side so we would not interfere with other diners. The food was excellent. Everyone was please and a great family reunion was a luncheon success

Went for lunch, with first impressions poor as we looked at the menu. The menu itself has a range of items, but it's poorly presented - uncertain of what is coming with the meal you intend to order. The food was good, maybe a change of potato type used for chips? As it wasn't the best. The burger was excellent and the tapas is a good idea and presented well. staff didn't seem as friendly towards us, compared to the other (locals) that were in. Overall okay but there are some improvements to be made.

Faded, old style, hotel dinning. Really needs a makeover and quality upgrade. Dining room is stark and poorly laid out. Staff were friendly and helpful but it's just another Highland hotel hanging by its fingernails. Food was good enough and price was fair, especially for the soft drinks that we had but it could be a much better experience.

The Royal Hotel is an old pub that hasn't been 'updated' in a while but that just adds to its feeling of 'homey' and 'cosy'. The staff very friendly and helpful. Food was typical pub food. Good hot food selection at breakfast. I stayed in a single room which was very 'compact' but fine for my needs. Very clean and had a good selection of hot drinks. Shower again was small but water pressure was fine and it was very clean, although temperature was slightly temperamental. I had a street facing room which was slightly noisy so if you are a light sleeper you may wish to avoid such a room. It was very easy to find (right on the main road) and there is a small carpark around the side. Rooms are accessed via stairs only though. Overall a good experience and thanks to Ivan for answering all of my 'advance' email questions!

I sat here with my family for more than 15 minutes at lunch time before a waiter came to our table AND the place was nearly empty. We ordered drink which we waited forever for then he finally took our order. 1 hour later I'd had enough and I saw them mumbling and knew there was something wrong. The waiter didn't come to our table to apologize and give us an explanation. I had to ask him. He said there was some confusion about the order and it had only just got put into the kitchen, an hour and 30 minutes after we had sat down. I told him to cancel the order. He had the audacity to want to charge me for my drinks. I told where his head must have been, somewhere where the sun doesn't shine, and walked out.

The Fish and Chip Shop is in our experience is without a doubt the BEST IN CAITHNESS AND SUTHERLAND! The fish was white and flakes. fried in beautiful crispy batter and the chips were perfect. We have experienced other Chip Shops in Wick,Thurso and Helmsdale, plus Mobile Chip Vans in Lybsterand Dunbeath and this has been the best so far too. We travelled around 30 miles to eat here and would do so again. THANK YOU.

If you’re taking the boat tour on Loch Ness this is where you’ll catch it. If not, it’s still a great pit stop to shop, have a bio break, grab a cold drink (or sample some gin!) and browse the shops. Surprisingly affordable souvenirs here. Stop won’t take long unless this is also your hotel… not sure of value or pricing on those. Great views of the Loch. Be careful of the very busy highway!
