I cannot express in words my gratitude for the amazing people of Cumbrae island. When me and my friends got stranded in the island the owner, Craig, offered us free accommodation and hosted an unforgettable night for me and my friends, paired with a cozy breakfast and a delicious lunch. I cannot recommend this experience enough. I will be coming back during the summer and will be exited to rejoin the fun with the lovely people of Cumbrae island!

Never have I experienced such hospitality and kindness in my life. The venue is gorgeous, the island is incredible and when me and my friends found ourselves stranded for the night we were taken in by the owner of this wonderful establishment who treated us with such unconditional kindness. I cannot recommend visiting this beautiful island and staying at this hotel more, the people are all lovely and welcoming and the sunsets are to die for. I will for sure be back again to a place that treated me not like a stranger but like family.

We have been coming to Millport for many years and during that time 'The George ' has gone through some torrid times, however, no more. Craig and his family have transformed it into a thriving well run hotel, restaurant, music venue and bar. We went for a family lunch on very busy Wednesday lunchtime. The service and food were excellent from start to finish. Congratulations to you all.

I attended here with friends and family for a day out, when we first walked in there was a dog leash sitting on the table which we kindly handed to the manager which she responded to "that’s because this is a staff table which our staff likes to sit here” we then asked if it was a problem and if we could sit there which we were ignored, after sitting down as there was a large group of us I sat at a small table beside them with my son as there was not enough room which I got told to move and squeeze in beside everyone she then removed the table. After we ordered the food for everyone except my son due to his allergies he has his own sandwich I was told he was not aloud to eat it and must go outside and eat it who is 3 Years old I decided to leave with him. My friends stayed for their food which took over an hour to come out for the Manger to not bring out my cousins food which she said she forgot to put her order through. Absolutely shocking customer service they don’t know how to treat or speak to customers. while friends were waiting on food there was other people complaining too.

Me and my husband came down to Millport for a couple of days. Both nights we ate in the pier hotel. Food was absolutely beautiful. Place was very clean, brilliant selection of drinks. The best thing was the staff ! All staff were so friendly and very helpful, especially the owners . We’ll definitely be back.

He a great lunch in here after walking round Cumbrae. I think it’s recently been taken over, as the service we had was 10/10, nothing like reviews for last year. Really friendly couple running the place, table service, food was great too. Really couldn’t fault, £30 for lunch which included a glass of wine and a pint. Perfect spot for lunch by the fire with friendly service: would recommend

We called in for an evening meal as we had been told the hotel was dog friendly. It certainly was, as is most of Millport! It was the main chefs night off so the menu was more limited. I had the Cajun chicken burger and hubby had fish and chips. Mine came with chips and coleslaw, his with garden peas. Both were excellent, cooked to perfection. The main chef has a lot to live up to!😁. The Guinness was also excellent. The new owners were so friendly and welcoming, (they’d only been there a month), and I get the impression that this pub will be going from strength to strength!

Had lunch here while visiting Millport on the Waverly! It was nice. Hand battered fresh fish, we asked for coleslaw instead of peas which wasn't a bother and we weren't charged any extra. My daughter had the homemade soup, which they done as a smaller portion and thoroughly enjoyed. We all had reasonably priced soft drinks and the service was fantastic. Nice window seat looking out to the sea, toilet and surroundings were very clean. Would recommend!

After reading similar terrible experiences thought I would share the abuse me and my husband suffered from the manager and another member of staff as a result of politely complaining about the food we were served. Absolutely no customer service skills and unbelievably rude and this after years of being regular customers and friends with the former manager, we are very disappointed. Let’s wait and see how their business fares in the winter when all the day trippers stop coming and the locals take their business and spend their money elsewhere.

Extremely disappointed. Attempted to join other family members already within and was met by a manager with no customer care credentials whatsoever, who told me, basically, “no, the kitchen’s closed, we’re closing in ten minutes anyway.” All of which may well have been true but the manner of communication was so off-putting we decided not to return while under current management.

We never got the chance to even see the menu. The staff (and there were many of them) ignored us for around 10 minutes while they chatted and cleaned tables. In the end we gave up and left. Appalling service and an establishment that gives Millport a bad name. We were keen to contribute to the local economy but the locals don’t seem interested in visitors. Shame!

Nice place to stop off, not a huge menu but okay, really dissappointing they don’t serve the local gin, I was so looking forward to trying it so had to go to one of the other establishments to sample it. It would have been lovely to try it there and I would have expected local places to support local businesses , anyway the Royal George was a nice experience despite the gin

Walking round Cumbrae and popped in here for a drink. Really friendly staff the owner took time out for a chat (the also own the Clutha in Glasgow) great wee beer garden overlooking the harbour and the young guy taking the orders was cheery and joking. Myself and a group of friends decided to visit Millport for the afternoon for a run round the island on our bikes and to grab dinner. Once we arrived we decided to get some food in us first before taking a run round the island and getting our ferry home. Upon arrival, the staff were very nice, but told us that since we did not have a booking we were to sit outside; which honestly didn't bother us. We ordered food at the bar, then that's when the wait began. We were told that they had a backlog of checks which we didn't mind, despite the place not looking all that busy. An hour and a half for some bangers and mash seemed excessive though, especially since the mash was cold. The only reason we waited is because one of us somehow managed to get all of their food within half an hour, so we didn't even get to eat together! We were in hope that ours wouldn't be far behind. One of the waiting staff did very kindly take our picture, though. We won't be back.

I went into the Royal George with my girlfriend for a drink before a cycle. We went up to the bar to order and we were greeted by a lady that got very angry just by looking at us and seeing someone " diffetent" than her. I was born and brought up in Glasgow but I an of Indian heritage and she was shouting at us as if we don't know English. However, I can guarantee that our English is 100 times better than her given the fact that my gf and I have 4 degrees between us! It got worse when we sat down as the bar lady looked over at me and shouted " sanitize your hands and sign the book!" , at the top of her lungs. At that point I stood up and advised her that we did this o arrival. She then shouted " I'm not talking to you" in a very aggressive manner. Even if she wasn't, she was still being rude and aggressive to me. At that point I felt very uncomfortable and had to get up and leave due to her intimidating and aggressive tone. While leaving she then shouted again in even a more aggressive manner. I then replied by informing her that I heard her the first time. I have never experienced such vile aggression towards me since my days as a child living in Kirkhill. This ruined the entire day and left a terrible impression of both the Royal St George.

We were served by a lovely chap (Max/Matt) who informed us they weren't yet doing the 'eat out to help out' scheme even although we had seen it advertised on the HMRC website. Not sure why this was the case. The food was ok. The 'crusty bread' accompanying the Cullen skink was limp cheap white sliced bread. The peas with the fish were weirdly minted something that goes with lamb not fish and although the tartare sauce tasted fresh it was overpowering. Sadly, although the fish looked great, it was on the greasy side. Disappointingly the female who we asked for our bill was extremely abrupt and came across as if she would rather not be there. Such a shame as the young guy was polite and friendly, maybe over compensating for her rudeness. It's extremely unlikely we'll return here on our next visit to the Island.

We were on holiday and this hotel was very close so decided to go for Sunday lunch. When you go in the first thing that you notice is the decor. Needs a new carpet and a lick of paint. No-one came near so went to the bar. Got told the menus were at the end of the bar. Went and got "menus" which was A4 tyed paper folded into three. Not very hygenic given the amount of people who were touching. Eugh. Should at least be in wipeable polly pocket. Went to the bar to order. You pay for it then you join the queue at the bar for your drink. Why? Didnt think a barmaid could get blackcurrant and soda wrong but there you go. Had to peer in to the pale pink drink to double check there actually was blackcurrant in it. Overpriced for what we got. Haggis fritter swimming in grease. Nachos had obviously been "pinged". Server came and took my plate as i was mid mouthful. I assumed it was because the main was ready. Nope. When it did come my panini was in fact a baguette. Philli steak. Either the "steak" was off or the cheese didnt compliment it. After one bite it was left. A family came in when we were there, took a look and left with the mother saying "im not letting my kids eat in here". My husband left half his burger too. Didnt stay for anything else. PS while i was at the bar a local was talking to a barmaid and moaning about tourists. Really? Its tourists that give them business while visiting the island. Sadly i will not be paying another visit to this royally named establishment which falls short of the mark.

Came here 2 months ago with my partner and 2 dogs and had a lovely lunch - very dog welcoming and the women working was so kind and welcoming. So we decided to bring all our family over today for my dads birthday and planned on stopping here for something to eat as we really enjoyed the atmosphere last time. We arrived but we're 20 mins early so decided to go away and wait untill they were ready to serve no problem. The sun was shining and our dogs needed some water (we walked all around Millport) so went back to ask the barmaid if we could have some for them and she replied with "we don't have any, someone stole the dog bowl a while ago sorry" my partner asked if she could put some in a bowl for them and she refused. Disgusted with it if I'm honest. It was a quite Sunday and not many places were open but we managed to walk right round and stopped outside a cafe next to bank of Scotland where they provided water. It totally put us off going back there for food and decided just to leave and go and get the Ferry home as we didn't fancy anywhere else. It's mad what a bit of BAD customer service can do. Baring in mind there were 12 of us so would've been good customers for the day and spent around £150 all together. Your loss. Won't be back unfortunately

Came over to do sponsored walk with some great friends and dancing family. we were let into the Royal George Hotel early at about 11. 45 and was hoping to get some lunch before we walked back to The Ferry at Millport. we were told that their was no food or drink being served till after 12. So obviously we would not be able to order anything at that time. One of the children had touched the blinds and the aggressiveness in the man behind the bar was well and totally out of order when he shouted don't let the children touch the blinds. we were horrified and embarrassed by this total idiots mannerism. their is away of telling people things and that was not the way. He proceeds to argue with the female bar staff about throwing us out and again it was no where near 12oclock. So we all decide to put on our Jackets and go as we would not tolerate being spoken too in that tone especially with young children. what an absolute disgrace of a man and there was about 20 or 30 of us going to buy some food or drink. awk well his loss not ours. hope he treats people with better respect next time. So on this tiny island off the Scottish coast is the Royal George Hotel Restaurant. Busy little place. Pub food, pretty decent. Sadly this is the only hotel on the island that has outside seating, and it is clear the owners make no effort at all with this establishment. It seems that they do not even bother to try as they are already busy with customers that want outside seating area to enjoy a few drinks. All the other pubs are indoors so there is no where else to go if you want to sit outside and enjoy the view's - especially in good weather. Outside tables were very weather beaten, one twisted, 'beer garden' area was pretty untidy, not very clean and very uninviting. Such a shame as it could be amazing with some love and tlc. Stayed for one and left. Very disappointing. Will not return

Myself, husband and parents visited this place today to get something to eat whilst in millport. It's in an ideal location and looked pretty decent from the outside. When we went in the only free table was one that a family had just left and so had their plates etc still there which was fine. It took just a few minutes for one of the girls to pop over and start taking the plates away. We had never visited this place before and asked if we could have some menus. Rather than explaining that we were free to pop to the bar as they were all there (which is a bit odd in itself) she basically said that there's no table service and we needed to order at the bar. We were asking for a menu so we were still none the wiser, my husband then went to the bar, found them himself and brought them over. The menu isn't extensive but is decent enough. We placed our order at the bar then waited for our meals to be brought over. Even though our table had been cleared of the plates etc it hadn't been wiped. It was filthy, sticky, had crumbs etc so once the people next to us moved and the girl had cleaned their table a little (she still didn't lift the place mats but it was cleaner than our table) we moved across there. My husband ordered a can of coke with a glass with ice, the first glass given was sticky on the inside and obviously dirty, he went back and was given another glass, the 2nd glass had lipstick around it, so he went back again, the 3rd glass had crumbs in it!! Suffuce to say he gave up and just drank rrom the can....it seemed the safer option!! It was no wonder all tge glasses were getting mixed up as the bar was full of dirty glasses. Then our food came, my dad was happy with his cheeseburger, my chicken burger was meant to come with coleslaw but I had to ask for it as it wasnt on the plate and they had no mayonnaise. My husbands fish was just a load of batter but he was that hungry he ate it anyway. When we'd finished I went to the toilet which seemed ok but rather than paper towels there was a big roll by the sink which by this time was soaked by people obviously trying to take paper of it to dry their hands. All in all I'll never visit this place again. A lot of my family own and run pubs and restaurants and this was a joke of a place don't waste your time or money going here.

My mum and me had lunch here on a rainy day in Millport. Though the bar area is a bit tired looking in daylight ( am sure it's very cosy at night), it was a most welcoming venue on a dreich Scottish day. I can certainly recommend the food. My Mum had fish and chips; fresh and tasty. She loved it. I had the curry: a knockout. Never been to India but I'm sure this is what a curry should taste like: subtle, full of flavour and not burn-your-tonsils! The curry gets the extra blob. By the way Millport , for those who don't know, is a wonderful little town on the isle of Cumbrae, on the river Clyde. Reachable by a car ferry from Largs (takes 15 minutes).

Visited with a friend and our kids. Choice for children was average, but that's not unusual. Ordered fish fingers for one of the children, when it arrived it was a battered piece of fish. Told the waiter it wasn't what we ordered, was informed that they had no fish fingers so had substituted for this. Now I can understand places run out of food, but surely it is common curtesy to inform the paying customer and ask if they wish to change their order, rather than just serve it and wait to see if anything is said?? Then when I did say, the waiter wasn't really bothered and just shrugged. He did offer to change it, but having already waited 30 minutes for our lunch, we decided it wasn't worth the hassle and extra wait. Food was nice, but let down by the staff.

Well, snacks were pretty good, service good and made to feel really welcome, hence returning for the evening live entertainment. Beer garden however consists of some wooden benches around back yard of hotel so you have to go through alleyway where rubbish, cannisters etc are kept. Not pretty! View was lovely but not our definition of a 'beer garden'. Each to their own I suppose! Place was jumping in the evening and band were excellent. Staff quick to clear tables and bar service was good.

Capricious, demonic & manic management. Best avoided if you wish to enjoy "Millport that thrills people so".

What the negative reviews mean I'm really not sure. This is a hotel bar that serves good traditional home cooked bar food.My husband and I were here on a sunny busy Saturday. The food was served promptly it was all fresh and piping hot, very tasty and good value for money. The place was busy and had a lovely friendly vibe with locals chatting at the bar. While we were eating a lady came in to enquire if there was a table free that could seat about 10, there appeared to be no problem and tables were moved together and high chair brought. The family appeared very happy and towards the end of the meal the staff brought out a cake singing happy birthday to an 80 year old (I presume the family had brought a cake out with them). When I came to leave a review I couldn't believe what the negative reviews were saying. All I can say is well done.

Reading the few reviews about this establishment. I cannot disagree more. I came down with friends on Wednesday and although the service was a a bit laid back . I thought that was part of the charm of the place. I came back down this day (Friday) to book 4 rooms for my birthday the service is second to none, the food was not quick but maybe the previous reviewers are used to McDonalds. I have complete faith in the staff to make sure my stay is memorable. I can't answer for the review of 2013 but the reviews of 2014 do not take in to account that this establishment is owned by the same family as the Clutha Vaults in Glasgow where a helicopter landed with a loss lives, and consider the affect on the staff that this tradgety had on the staff!!!

We visited The George for lunch and should have taken warning from the run down exterior, however we ordered lunch for 4 adults and 2 children. We were served deep fried slop. Also during the meal I spotted a used Elastoplast stuck to the back of the seat along with a multitude of filth. After observing this we decided to move out to the beer garden. Unfortunately this was not much better, with a quantity of rickety broken wooden benches. Avoid this place like the plague, as that's what you'll probably end up with if you visit here.

Went jn to ask if dogs were allowed in...see review of Frasers...we were desperate to get out of the cold....and was given a load of flannel about how the law has changed recently and dogs are not allowed in places that serve food, places that have carpeted areas or where people might get allergic reactions. It was so bad it might have been funny.Quite happy to accept that many places don't welcome dogs but get fed up when they won't just say that they don't want dogs in their establishment. Dogs are not permitted in food preparation areas....they are allowed in places that serve food at the discretion of the proprietor and the presence or otherwise of a carpet makes no difference to that. We visit and eat in many places where dogs are welcome and many have carpets as well as high trip advisor ratings and five star hygiene ratings from local authority inspectors. The Newton just along the road has a carpet, serves food and does admit dogs!No need for a lecture full of falsehoods...a straight no would be fine.

We took our 3 children to Millport in September this year as a treat and unfortunately didnt book any of the restaurants for dinner. This meant we couldnt get a table anywhere so decided to try the George. We asked if we could have a table & the woman in the bar looked at the clock & then said ok thats fine. SO we chose a table & waited... and waited... eventually she came over & asked us quite abrubtly if we were planning on ordering food as the kitchen was closing. We said yes we were but we were waiting on someone coming over to take our order. She said no you come up to the bar with your order (how were we supposed to know this). So we ordered & waited for our meals, the kids were happy & my daughter was talking about getting chocolate fudge cake for dessert. They only really get dessest as a treat in restaurants so she was looking forward to it. The meals were ok, my chilli was just spicey mince, no sauce & the kids meals came with sides of fruit or veg so we ordered them seeing they were free. The kids portions were quite big & they struggled to eat them, my youngest is 2 1/2 and got a massive plate of food. Anyway when we finished we asked to order dessert. We were told by the same woman that we couldnt order it as the kitchen was closed. I said my daughter only wants some chocolate cake & she said no, she could possibly get us some ice cream but this was said in a manner that we were being of annoyance to them. I said that i was disappointed in this as the kids were looking forward to it all day & that i know she told us the kitchen was closing but i would have expected that if you are given a table to eat then that means you get a full meal. I told her i wasnt happy but left it at that & didnt ask to speak to anyone else. I went back to the table to get out stuff ready & get my purse to pay & leave. Next thing this battle axe of a woman who i assume was the owner/manager (she didnt say) ame over & started piunting her finger in my face! She asked why i wasnt happy & i explained. She then went into a rant about how they had done us a favour by keeping the kitchen open, she went on & on about how much of a mess my kids had made (nothing different to any other kids in restaurants) and said they hadnt eaten half their food so why was i wanting to buy them dessert?!! by this point my kids were in tears & desperate to leave. She then accused me of making a fuss as i didnt want to/could not pay!! she told us to get out & get out fast in a threatening manner & walked away. I went up to the bar & tried to pay, i said i had no problem paying for what we had eaten and got my purse out. She spat at me 'i dont want your money, get out & get out fast!'. After this our holiday was completely ruined & the kids were very upset. We used the money that was for the meal to buy them something from the toyshop the next morning to cheer them up. Absolutely disgusting treatment & customer service, never experienced anything like this in my life!!

I’m surprised to see a couple of negative reviews here about service and staff talking. I totally disagree with these comments. I have always found the service to be fast and staff polite and friendly. I’m always in a hurry so I would be the first to complain if the staff were slow. Now onto the cakes… cakes are amazing. In fact I’m not from the town but I travel through 3 towns just to come to this one. I’ve also discovered their curry pies. They’re awesome!😋 ❤️

So went to pick up new Glasses today and as I was straight after work early shift was hungry . A Piri Piri place in mall Called Black Rooster ( yea crazy a chicken place ). It had advertised “ Vegetarian “ menu. Corn burger Paneer wrap Halloumi burger All of these. £4.50. With a variety of “ sauce” flavours . I had decided on the “ corn burger 🍔” Oh sorry we’ve “ phased “ those out . Puzzled look on my face … Ok I no would like the Halloumi Burger. Ahhh ok. With what sauce and do you want lettuce and Mayo Yes please Said I. I really want you to enjoy this I will have the Spicey BBQ please and make that a meal thanks that will be £7.50 Now at this point I sat more in Hope than confidence that this wasn’t a hooge mistake . Sadly it turned out my initial feelings were founded. This mess is what turned up . When is a burger not a burger !! I spoke to a staff member explaining my confusion. Oh we’ve “ phased out the Halloumi burgers” and we now only use the halloumi sticks !!! What would you like to do ? The manager should have explained this when she took your order. I’m sorry if she didn’t . Please just refund me. Thank you. So the moral in the Tale . If it’s a Chicken shop . No matter how “ cool and on trend they want to be seen as having vegetarian options. They will most likely still be a piri piri chicken shop that wants to be Nando’s but still fail with even the basics. 🤮

Excellent fish and chips with the lightest crunchiest batter and juicy succulent fish. As a female solo visitor (walking Ayrshire Coastal Path) I enjoyed the relaxing room upstairs and the staff were ultra friendly.
