My wife and I had a fabulous culinary experience paired with some gorgeous wines. The best evening out for dinner in a long time. Staff were very knowledgeable and friendly, the venue is small and intimate with a parisian bistro feel. The restaurant only does a taster menu on Friday and Saturday and need advising of vegetarian requirements in advance. We did this for my wife and she enjoyed every course.

This is THE best restaurant in Whitley Bay. It certainly is a hidden gem but we have been going for years for lots of special occasions. The tasting menu always has a unique twist and the creativeness of it all never ceases to amaze me. The front of house staff are so lovely and knowledgeable about the menu and where the ingredients are sourced etc. Looking for wed to another special occasion to go back. Well it serves us right for not visiting before. Such amazing, tasty food, great service and fantastic value for money. Our favourite was the pork "fishcake" with carrot puree and saffron alioli. And we came away with a goody-bag. What a treat. My husband has declared it his new favourite place. Don't make the same mistake as us; get yourselves along as soon as possible. Go with an open mind and trust the chef; he really knows what he's doing.

Fabulous tasting menu with a wonderful selection of dishes that looked as lovely as they tasted. We were here for a birthday celebration and it did not disappoint. Every single plate packed a punch with so much flavour, texture and all round deliciousness. They accommodated my dietary requirements and it didn’t feel like a compromise in any way. It was our first visit and we will definitely be returning.

This remains one of my top recommendations for a place to eat. The food, experience and wine pairings are top notch. And the price point makes it hard to resist, once you know how good the food is, it’s an easy sell! We’ve recently started opting for the wine pairing also, we did it once as a treat, but the combination enhances the experience so much we just get it as a default now! I can’t fault the staff and the venue, it’s cosy, friendly and just a nice place to enjoy your meal!

Exquisite! Yesterday's Sunday lunch was a bit special. We were lucky enough to get a table for The Roxburghs penultimate service of their 'month of Sundays' lunches in March. There's one left this Sunday and if there are any tables left I'd suggest any self-respecting foodie snaps them up! If they're not already gone. It's a gorgeous small, cosy restaurant so spaces are limited. Starters of Roxburgh black pudding, pancetta & poached egg, and the cauliflower soup with onion bhaji & wild garlic were both the perfect introduction to an outstanding meal, I'd go as far as calling it an experience! All 3 of us couldn't resist the Limousin beef. Cooked perfectly pink topped with a quenelle of the Roxburgh's signature horseradish cream, it doesn't get better than that on a Sunday lunch. The charred hispi cabbage we all agreed we could have eaten a plate of that alone... delicious! The roast potatoes full of flavour with a background hint of herbs and garlic, cooked beautifully with plenty of colour and crispy crunch- a simple feature sadly lacking in so many establishments- the gravy was so rich and full of flavour we couldn't help asking for more, and more! Dessert- I've never tasted a chocolate brownie like it. It was beautifully chewy as it should be- yet so light it almost vanished in your mouth, leaving a punch of pure cocoa- amazing! Creme Fraiche sorbet on the side, a tangy, sweet perfect match. Apple and Rhubarb crumble was sweet, tangy, crunchy- and just amazing. Cocktails of Negroni and a Sidecar were bold and made exactly how they should be. We were sent beautiful dessert wine by the owner/ genius of a chef. Red Muskadel 2016 - from the Nuy Winery in South Africa. So delicious! The Roxburgh is the epitome of the term 'hidden gem'. A 5 minute walk from Whitley Bay metro station. I've eaten in many Michelin star restaurants but this place just stands out for me above them all, the quirkiness, service, ambience, the produce. The imagination that goes into the ever-changing menu. Michelin worthy but without the price tag. Book it, and thank me later :)

Just moved to the area , we have had a few Tasting Menus in the Newcastle area , we found this Restaurant had a lot of good ratings reviews etc so decided to go and try. We found from the minute we entered not very welcoming at all. Chicken wings to us are not our choice the chicken skin was soft which put us off. We found the chicken liver parfait was basically that nothing memorable l, fish and chips tiniest piece of turbot not much taste to it at all then 1 slice of white bread and butter arrived when we had finished the dish. Venison rare which we thought should be medium , cold plates throughout, dessert which I really looked forward to was so bland had no taste at all apart from the honeycomb that was it l . The dessert was ice cream with crumbled honey comb , really set pear jelly, not even sure it was a dessert to be honest, the wine flight wasn’t value for money at all 3 175ml of wine 1 dessert wine is not worth the money at all. The wine is matched with each course but at the Roxburgh 1 glass was split between 2 courses. Having said that the wine tasted amazing. Really cold inside. Looks dated. Some good cooking in parts but cold plates. Don’t think we would return.

Absolutely outstanding as always - the tasting menu was incredible, and great value. I had a pescatarian version and my partner had the standard one - wrong choice of word though as there was nothing standard about it. Inventive, fun, delicious dishes made with the finest quality ingredients in a lovely setting with impeccable service. Also the best Old Fashioned we’d ever had. The takeaway Vicky sponge to eat in bed with a cuppa afterwards was the icing on the cake. Pure class, and a total asset to Whitley Bay.

The taster menu was amazing - a complete surprise as we did not get a menu, which adds to the interest. The food was delicious- but not a belly buster, all small plates. We got the wine pairing which was good value for money and the lady who served us was very informative about all of the food and drinks. The decor is interesting, quite old fashioned but I really liked it. This place is only open on a Friday and Saturday evening so feels quite exclusive. What a wonderful little restaurant! Can't ask for much more than great food, wine and very welcoming staff not to mention the cosy atmosphere that made us feel right at home. The menu isn't huge but that is what I'd expect from a little independent place like this and it still had good variety of choice and more than satisfied the appetites and palates of a hungry family of 4. It even satisfied a normally fussy 9 year old! The quality of the food was second to none and the prices very reasonable despite the rampant inflation in our economy! Overall it offers a wonderful dining experience and fabulous value for money. Highly recommended for anyone finding themselves in the Whitley Bay area.

My husband booked this restaurant for my 40th birthday for 15 of us and paid a £150 deposit. On trying to agree the menu he’d asked for just 2 courses rather than 3 as we’d be taking a cake to which he was told there would be a £2.50 per head charge just to eat our own cake! This establishment Seemed very focused on squeezing as much money as they can out of you. When they finally provided us with the set menu 48 hrs before the event and we were asked to preorder for the group, the menu was full of offal; bone marrow, lambs neck, belly pork. When we asked our group what they would like many were struggling to find anything they would like. We asked if the menu could be changed slightly but there was no flexibility, it was basically like it or lump it. Very disappointing attitude they seem to think they are running some sort of Michelin star establishment and show no customer service. Due to the inflexibility my husband was left no option other than to cancel, but the response of the management was oh well we have your £150 deposit so cancel if you like. They have missed out on circa £700 from us but his response was well go to sambucas! Very pretentious people and extremely disappointing attitude. Thanks Roxburgh for ruining my birthday. I’ll be hosting my party at home rather than give you anymore money.

Visited with our daughter and her husband. Very small restaurant which you wouldn’t look twice at from outside, but the food that awaits you inside is fabulous. Very limited menu which is what you expect when food is being properly prepared - but we all found something that we fancied (and enjoyed). The slow roasted lamb shoulder was to die for and we honestly took a massive lump of meat away with us!! If you haven’t been yet, book a table!!

Attended at 12 noon on a Sunday as a group of 7 and we had the place to ourselves. The dog was allowed in with no problems. The special was a ‘full shoulder of 12-hour slow roasted lamb’ - suggested to be shared between 3 or 4 people. We shared it between 5 and there was still enough spare to take home. The meat simply fell off the bone and melted in your mouth - exquisite. Add this to the good wine, friendly staff shabby chic decor and it made for a perfect Sunday meal. Will be coming back here without a shadow of a doubt!

After having a couple of lovely evening meals here we decided to try the Sunday lunch. Starters - choice of three, we had the Isle of Wight tomatoes with breadcrumbs and consommé, and gorgeous grilled peaches with lettuce and prosciutto. We both had beef which was cooked rare and just melted in the mouth. Proper huge homemade Yorkshire and al dente veg. Clearly the chef has a lot of talent, couldn’t recommend it enough.

I read so many fab reviews my expectations were really high and I felt slightly disappointed, which is probably unfair. The food was very nicely presented, fresh and tasty and we will revisit to try the menu again.

Absolutely first class food, unpretentious and great value for money. And not many restaurants tick all those boxes! It’s in the town (not in the touristy area by the seafront) and well worth a visit. I had Lindisfarne oysters to start with black vinegar and chilli salt - superb and in prime condition, fresh as fresh can be. Then lamb - loin and breast - beautifully cooked and so tasty - served with cod roe. An unusual combination but the saltiness of the roe was a perfect counterpoint to the lamb. Served with radishes. It was an innovative, and winning, combination. I thoroughly recommend this establishment - quality food and unassuming. If I lived nearby I’d be here all the time!

Great place, very friendly and welcoming. We had the pies, chips, and peas, but it was the gravy thick with meat that added to the meal. Will be back!

As part of a birthday celebration as a family, we visited 31 at the Quay for a meal. On arrival the staff showed us to our table. The waitress was very attentive, polite, and friendly. The atmosphere was really welcoming, and the place was well laid out. We ordered drinks which were brought to the table quickly. Our grandchildren were with us, and the children's menu had a good selection of food for them. Personally, I found it hard to choose as there was so much choice and it was all lovely. I can only talk for myself when I say the mushroom soup tasted like I was eating fresh mushrooms, and the whole party said their starters were amazing. I chose the lamb as my main dish, and that was also very tasty. The vegetables were well cooked and very tasty. I was very full and unable to try any of the desserts on offer. At the end of the meal, the waitress presented a "happy birthday" dessert for the birthday boy. This was a nice touch. Throughout the evening, it was nice to watch the chefs preparing the food for service in front of us. The 3 chefs were busy throughout the evening as we're the waiting staff, but they made it look effortless. Well worth a visit.
