The pub on entry was bar to the right, more of a dining area to the left. We were greeted by a lovely lady who gave us a menu and took our drinks order, after a little while a gentlemen took our food order. The dining room is very well decorated and has a beautiful log fire. It wasn't long before the food came, and it did not disappoint ... the pie was beautifully cooked inside and out the mash was not my cup of tea but my partner liked it my mushy peas were what i can only describe as a childhood moment they were amazing and tasted how peas should unlike the watered down ones sold everywhere else. My gravy was lovely and thick. My partners cod was cooked so well it melted in your mouth. The chips are definitely the better option and are cooked so well!!! It's definitely worth the money. 100% recommended for anyone passing or local.

This place used to be great when it was a bar for the local people who worked on the Quay. Now it's full of pretentious snobs with zero taste in music. If you are a fan of music then avoid this place like the plague. What passes as music is nothing short of torture.

MORE AT Google

I recently visited The Low Lights Tavern in North Shields, and it was an unforgettable experience that more than earns its five-star rating. Here's what stood out to me: Service: The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and welcoming. From the moment I walked in, I felt right at home. They knew their regulars by name and still managed to make newcomers like me feel just as valued. My drink orders were quick, and they checked in just enough without being overbearing. Ambience: This place has charm in spades. With its cozy, old-world feel, you can sense the history of the building as soon as you step inside. It's the perfect spot to relax after a day out or for a casual evening with friends. The warm lighting and inviting decor create an atmosphere that makes you want to stay for hours—and I almost did! Drink Choices: The bar offers an impressive selection of ales, beers, and spirits, with a clear emphasis on quality. They have an excellent rotation of local ales, which is a huge plus for anyone wanting to sample the best of the region. The staff were happy to recommend drinks based on my preferences, and every pint I had was top-notch. Food: While I didn’t order any food during my visit, I couldn’t help but notice the dishes being served to other patrons. From hearty pub classics to more modern dishes, everything looked absolutely incredible—generous portions, beautifully plated, and smelling divine. Next time, I'll be diving into the menu without hesitation. Live Entertainment: The live entertainment was the cherry on top of an already stellar evening. The performers were talented, engaging, and clearly enjoyed what they were doing, which made for an electric atmosphere. It’s rare to find a venue where the music perfectly complements the vibe, but The Low Lights Tavern nailed it. All in all, The Low Lights Tavern is a gem of a pub, blending history, hospitality, and fantastic entertainment. Whether you're a local or just passing through, it’s worth stopping by—if not for the drinks and atmosphere, then for the entertainment and the promise of amazing food. I'll definitely be back!

Was in North Shields to catch a ferry, so popped in here to pass some time. Fantastic pub, staff are lovely and welcoming, also very enthusiastic when you ask them questions about the locally brewed beers on tap, which are also superb. My wife ordered a coffee which she enjoyed. One of the beer taps is an actual BRIT Award which was won by their local lad, Sam Fender. I'd imagine that's quite a pull for tourists. Sadly we weren't hungry at the time of our visit, so didn't get to try the food, but throughout the afternoon they had to start operating a waiting list for dining, so it must be good.

Really old pub not far from the quayside. We originally stopped just for a drink but when we saw the food coming out we decided to eat too. Husband had the special, baked smoked cod with veg and chips which he said was delicious. I had scampi after a long debate with myself about the pies which looked fantastic. The chips were some of the best I’ve had, the portions were large and the food was overall excellent. Definitely worth stopping. Highly recommended

Went one lunchtime for drinks and a meal based on the good reviews. First problem, flat cloudy pint, told barrel just changed but people at the bar said that beer always being returned. Ordered food which arrived in reasonable time, tepid chips and cold peas and a very mediocre pie, not great for £15. Dog's on seats and being fed by customers. All in all a very poor experience, not recommended.

400 yr old traditional pub offering great homemade food (especially pies and burgers) but not a lot in the way of seating....many stools instead of chairs and small tables as it's not exactly part of a large modern chain. An historic and traditional bar by the quayside, this is well worth a visit. Excellent cask ale, as well as keg and a huge array of other drinks. We sat outside in the sun as the world struggled by on the hill. Inside is a traditional low brown bar with a couple of rooms and space to sit and stretch. It's not expensive and the service is very swift and friendly. Nothing is too big much trouble. Lovely people. I didn't eat, but saw what others had and it looked delicious. I didn't hear any complaints from anyone about anything. Definitely happy to recommend this bar.

HIGHLEY DISSAPOINTED WILL NEVER RETURN!! TREATED LIKE AN ANIMAL First impressions were great! Got there and the lady behind the bar was so incredibly friendly, prompt service. It was very busy after the match but the staff dealth with this well. We got a table which was small for 3 people, and it felt quite tight. Ordered food and made clear I either wanted a kids meal for my dog or a larger meal to share with a dog with bowl or side plate, as I wouldn’t be able to eat this on my own. I was told to get the more expensive adult meal to share and told this would be more than enough for both of us. My meal came and no side plate dog bowl, I asked again and the male server said he would go get me one and then after some time saw him serving behind the bar with no intention to get me the plates or bowls. I went to the bar and asked the other male if my plate or bowl was coming for the dog where I was told THE CHEF has strict instructions you cannot feed the food inside under no circumstances, sorry I’m paying for to the dog and his food and I’m not allowed to feed him under no circumstances! I said I’m paying for my food and I nearly ordered him a kids meal, I made clear my intentions before I ordered, if I had been told this was not allowed I would of ordered a regular meal for myself. He said best I can do is give you a box you can leave ur table and feed ur dog outside. Hold on I’m a paying custermer but you’re going to send me out into the street in the rain to feed my dog …. YES!!! so I did I went out into the rain to feed my dog from a box, food that I would never of ordered if I knew this was the case. The lady behind the bar who had been loverly apologised and said I’m so sorry you did tell me ur intentions, I don’t know why the chef is doing this just feed the dog she could see I was really upset, but I felt so uncomfortable at this point like I was going to get into trouble, for feeding my dog food I paid for and made clear what my intentions were before I ordered. I filled his box with left over meat and veg as the meal was much to big for me and the male server then picked up the box and began to take it away like rubbish, I said that’s the dogs food you wouldn’t let me feed my dog? At this point the box was covered now with cream from the dessert and he said you want a new box then I said forget about it! We were treated terribly I felt so uncomfortable in there and didnt want to stay tbh. you can’t be dog friendly but then send peoole outside in the rain and then remove food people pay for. Supply no water or dog bowls? That’s the most un dog friendly place I’ve ever been to. Just ban dogs! But I guess you’re in competition with other pubs who actually are dog friendly so you pretend to be. The Sunday lunch was tasteless I’m not sure why the chefs so protective over his terrible meal and is definitely not worth £17.99 Such fond childhood memories from this bar when the fish quay festival was on all those years ago ….I’ll never be back. The lady behind the bar is loverly tho and could tell she was incredibly embarrassed about the whole situation! A chef telling a paying customer what they can and can’t do with their food is insane. My advice maybe make it policy to tell ppl before they order, have signs or have a convo with the custermer. Or just don’t be dog friendly!
