What a find! Driving down the A3052 we passed the Rousdon Kitchen, and decided to try it. The outside doesn't look much, but we popped in to see what the menu was like. The decor is black, and dark. The owner was very friendly. We ordered bacon, egg and sausage in a brioche bun. All I can say is "WOW". This was by far the BEST, most tasteful breakfast bap I have eaten in many, many years. If you are travelling through Rousdon and don't try this eatery, then it's your loss. Fabulous.

I visited with a friend for late breakfast after a morning hike. We needed calories and weren’t disappointed! The place is quite strikingly decorated; Matt black, LEDs, stainless steel, and lots of 90 degree angles. It stands out against the backdrop of cosy cafes and pubs that the area is known for. We were welcomed by a very nice lady and instructed to help ourselves to a seat and order at the counter. The menu is quite impressive, there are a number of interesting variations on the breakfast theme. The other side of the menu is for lunch service and looked really great also. It’s not the cheapest but it’s not crazy either. The food was fantastic, very full flavoured and obviously prepared with care and pride. The brioche toast, bacon, sausage patty, and egg were cooked perfectly but it was the details that really set it apart. My friend commented on how great the fried tomatoes were and he was absolutely right. We were in and out in the space of 45 minutes and both agreed that we will come back during lunch service next time as the menu was so enticing. I can see that a lot of reviews complain about the rigid adherence to the menu and the owner’s reluctance to deviate based on preferences or intolerances. I am with him on this point as I feel that he has put sufficient effort into creating an interesting menu that he has every right to be protective of it. Besides, it’s his place! If I was to offer any criticism I would mention that the interior decor makes the room somewhat acoustically odd, you could argue that it adds to the atmosphere though. The other thing I would mention is that I have an aversion to food served on boards. I’m trying to be more open minded but I’m not quite there yet! I’m looking forward to visiting again.

Quirky concept. You give your order directly to the chef. He carved the bacon to order. We watched everything being cooked. A waitress walked around giving drinks. Go up and collect your food. All the produce was first class. Plenty of it. Beans especially good.

This was somewhere we had wanted to try for ages and we were so disappointed! The place is filthy and the floor is slippery with grease as are the tables and menus. They clearly don’t clean the place. There was one girl who was I suppose a waitress although she did no waitressing. We had to order at the food counter which is not clear at all. There is no cutlery in tables so had to search for that. The guy shouted “here you go” when the food was ready, which we were already apprehensive about having seen him microwave the ribs and sauce. We asked for mayonnaise and the guy came over and just squirted it all over our food, clearly never heard of a ramekin! Don’t waste your time it is disgusting, dirty, greasy, overpriced, and rude lazy unfriendly staff. When we cut into the ribs we were expecting them to fall off the bone as it says they are sous vide but they were tough as old boots. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!

A unique venue however there is no table service which is not clear when you walk in. There is one ‘waitress’ and a chef meaning we were left waiting for over an hour for a simple breakfast. Whilst the quality of the food was good the portions were small making it very overpriced in my opinion. The chef cannot multi task and does one order at a time. Every customer there was looking concerned as to how long it was taking to get their food. Yes it was busy but the staff only had one gear and that was slow. I would not return.

On a drizzly and foggy New Year's Day, and after a wet and muddy walk on Trinity Hill, we finally managed to make to the Rousdon Bakery. In an un-assuming old filling station, we found a rustic table by the door and ordered hot drinks from a friendly woman at the coffee machine (as directed) who explained the system (drinks from her, food from Clive at the pass). The menu is brunch-type meals based around the staple sourdough bread baked on the premises. We had two full English sandwiches and a 'bog' standard bacon sandwich (this is anything but bog - salad leaves, watercress, masses of well-cooked streaky bacon) - total £28. We followed up with the only things left - pecan and walnut pastry and a pain au chocolat - both delicious. All the reviews here indicate that people either love this place or hate it. I thought it was great, I like the ethics here and the conviction of the owners that they are doing a great job - like it or lump it! My only other observation is that I stank of cooking by the time we left, but that just served to remind me of what a tasty meal I'd had for the next few days! The floor, by the way, is lethal on a damp day and in walking boots - take care.

Couple that with tasty coffee and it’s a heavenly experience. If you don’t like loud music, then eat elsewhere. Rock music is played at a loutish level. Having visited this bakery when it first opened we thought as we were in the area we would return, big mistake how disappointing. We arrived to be ignored by both the staff members we found some where to sit, after 10 minutes we asked if they come to us and we were told we had to go order at the coffee machine. We did this then you you help yourself, nothing was explained so we just got on. Have to say I thought this is really over priced to say it is self service £2 for a croissant and £4 for toast and you do all yourself, 4 years ago you got offered re-fills but not anymore. All use to be baked fresh but saw delivery of pre packed breaded items such a shame. We witnessed a couple who had to approach the kitchen counter to order there sandwich, then got told when it was ready it was there duty to collect it. At £8 for a BLT you would think they could deliver it to a table. Very dissatisfied. breakfast was nothing to get excited about definitely will not return £25 spent between 2 was a waste of money.

Refreshingly different where the they have no truck with current food fads or cater for real or mostly, let's face it, the entitled. If you don't like it f... off! The result is fantastic food at a very reasonable price. We chose the fish figure sandwich and eggy stack with "cowboy baked beans" and tomatoes although Melinda is of the opinion why mess with Heinz!? Chips that are cooked in duck fat for a deep crust and fluffy inside. House rules, only ask for what's on the menu, no just or but, don't ask for the music to be turned down, no vegan, don't ask for pepper and salt as it's already seasoned, cash only. Wonderful!

They dated the first earthenware pottery about 400 B. I think they realised it made it easier to keep the food off your lap and the floor. The idea obviously caught-on because you can buy chinaware at most catering outlets. I imagine there would be some outlying primitive civilizations where the idea has not yet been introduced, this includes Rousdon Bakery where food is served on planks of wood. Joking aside, presumably it is to save washing up and the cost of crockery. Trouble is you spend half your meal either cleaning up spills or chasing food into the middle of your plank lest it fall off onto the floor (though, perhaps the proprietor could save even more money by serving food directly on the floor, which would also be in-keeping with his primitive eating theme). It certainly would save my time as half my son's ended up on the floor anyhow!

However, can't fault the food, which was delicious, although a bit pricey. I would however change to serving on something with a lip, especially when you have a lot of syrup on your dish - paper and a wooden board just don't hold the drips so syrup got everywhere!

Terrible attitude towards his customers, don’t see the point in him being a chef. Tables were dirty. You have to help yourself to pastries, toast, cutlery and water and even go and collect your own cooked food etc which is silly - what is the point in having staff when the customers do everything themselves? I had the full English which I did not finish due to there being a hair in my toast - which is so coated in butter you can barely taste the bread. Egg was not cooked properly, bacon was burnt, beans were cold and everything was too overly seasoned. All in all the entire atmosphere is rude and unwelcoming. Won’t be visiting again. The owner has a list of bizzare rules for customers to abide by which are just ridiculous and frankly unnecessary (and also extremely pretentious and narcissistic-who needs to know you said no to coca cola back in the day fella when all I want to do is order a coffee?!?), if you're not in the business of pleasing/serving customers then why work in this line of business? I can understand Pierre Marco White's level of arrogance, his success has stood him and his restaurants out, but this is essentially a hipster greasy spoon in an old petrol station next door to a second hand car sales lot in rural Devon. I spent the entire time trying to work out the service routine and felt pretty uncomfortable, like I wasnt welcome or my custom 'needed'.

Brunch at the Rousdon Village Bakery is an experience. It's definitely not your run-of-the-mill café - the owner cares deeply about sourcing local produce and the end result is delicious. The sour dough bread in particular is freshly baked and is beyond excellent, but you'll be lucky to be able to buy a loaf unless you're there really early. So, if you're driving by do take a break and experience this delightfully quirky place.

Looks OK from outside, but not inside. No welcome, and you're left to work out the ordering system. Asked for coffee (eventually delivered in a cracked mug which had lipstick around the edge). No real apology from the chef/owner: he just laughed but did offer another cup or a refund. The homemade pastries were OK but we had to serve ourselves from a tray left uncovered by the cash till.

I really do not write reviews but you really deserve this one. I was met by Miss Non talkative Miss on my mobile and Mr cook also not saying a word, when I asked are you open and how do I order I was pointed to a menu- OK , so I ordered the eggy brioche with bacon and a flat white, I was told I didn't order the food correctly as per the menu not the title just the discription . I then sat and read the owners "rules" that stated that he didn't like rules and had told many BIG companies so when he was some important person but anyway he had a lot of them, worth a laugh, if you think of the irony. Back to the food brioche in over cooked butter with over done egg too much maple as a salt to sugar ratio didn't come through via the bacon which didn't taste smoked, coffee good. I was in the trade of hospitality the operative word being hospital and I am a chef

Wow! What a fantastic place. So fun and quirky. My family and I had been recommended this place by friends and it truly did not disappoint! The owner states his rules and conditions on a sign on the way in and again on menus on the table (all to which we thought were fair). Not a place for vegans...or boring people! No table service either to which we didn’t mind whatsoever. Friendly staff, outstanding food, relaxed atmosphere and fab choice of music. We are not from the area but will make sure we visit this fantastic place every time we are down from now on. Can’t recommend enough. Thank you so so much for a wonderful experience.

Visited today for coffee but would never go back. Tasteless coffee more expensive than hotel prices. Very cold cafe, arrogant staff, uncomfortable seating, dirty tables. Very disappointed because place was recommended to us by friends.

We love it here. The coffee is excellent and I have dreams of the eggy stack when I’m home and miles from the place. Once you are ready to embrace the laid back and ‘do it yourself’ vibe then you can enjoy the eclectic mix of tunes and the stylish modern interiors. If you’re the sensitive & slightly precious sort who needs constant waiting on then this isn’t the place for you. If you want great food, coffee, music and atmosphere, then give them a try. So much friendlier and cooler than the bakery at Lyme Regis who claimed to have the same ethos but had none of the charm.

Have been meaning to go to this bakery for ages, we finally made it yesterday and were not disappointed. The lunch was excellent although perhaps too much garlic for me, so next time I will enquire first. I avoided the mushrooms as the menu stated garlic, but I think it was on the bread under my tomatoes. However, the Eccles cakes we took home were amazing. We will be back - Thanks

I visited the Rousdon Bakery with a friend this week and walked out shocked by the discriminative, arrogant and rude manner. I am gluten free, which is catered for by wrapping sandwich contents in lettuce leaves instead of bread. I would have accepted that, but I am also dairy intolerant and quickly noticed that everything is cooked in butter. When I asked if oil could be used instead of butter it was a straight ‘no’, leaving me with nothing on the menu to eat. Similarly, vegans are not catered for at all. I asked if perhaps a salad filling could be put together for me instead but was told that nothing could be done differently to what was stated on the menu and intolerances are not catered for (despite every menu item being hand prepared from scratch). The manner of the proprietor was rude and arrogant and made me feel like a complete nuisance. He pointed out that there was a sign on the door stating that the menu is fixed and implied I shouldn’t have bothered entering in the first place. I also noticed a sentence at the bottom of the menu that stated that you are asked not to use the words ‘but’ or ‘just’ when placing your order! How rude and inconsiderate! How this place is allowed to run like this I don’t know... it is discriminatory and made me feel belittled and unwelcome. We walked out and won’t be returning.

When we prepare to go away for our trip to Dorset, Rousdon Bakery is the first place we want to visit to collect the freshly baked, delicious homemade authentic sourdough bread. Other reviews seem mixed & I guess we all have different expectations... but I find the laid back, chilled out atmosphere just what's needed after the stress of London & absolutely love the baker...he has a really dry sense of humour which suits us fine!! Will it suit you? I guess the only way to know is give it a try.

I like the ethos adopted by Clive, the owner & master baker. He uses locally sourced fresh ingredients for his food. He bakes enough bread to sell without waste, so unfortunately when it’s gone, it’s gone. He’s baking from 04:00 in the morning, & the bakery doors open at 08:30 & close at 14:00. Clive’s food is simple but tasty, based around his delicious sourdough bread. I love his food, his coffee & his company. Give it a try.

Loved this place. It’s got real character, a disused petrol station. The place is simple and funky! The food was amazing and I loved the style and the feel. The bread was brilliant - the tea top notch and I can’t recommend the Eggy Stack -Hipster style!

Home baked sourdough accompanies many of the dishes along with fresh leaves and sometimes home roasted tomatoes . Guacamole with bacon is one great topping ,garlic mushrooms another and a tasty ‘sausage McMuffin ‘ shows how it should be done . Get there early if you want a loaf of bread or pastry . The Eccles cakes are the best too . Lots of menu choices including to have lettuce instead of bread . Simple , well prepared and hearty food , good coffee and friendly staff .

Having read some of the bad reviews of this place, I think the issue is, a lot of people have just come to expect too much choice. Here, you come in, sit, check put the menu, go get ur pastries (if thats what you want), go order you hot drinks and go order your hot food. If you're a group, order at the same time. This makes cooking your groups order simpler.

We stopped at the cafe for a coffee and to warm up and decided to have lunch. I had the all day small breakfast which was excellent, the bacon was really tasty and everything was cooked perfectly, not greasy at all. My wife had the Tuna melt panini which she said was the most delicious food she had on holiday in Devon. The service was friendly and quick and everything was spotless.

Decided to visit the Combe Garden Centre, overdue really as we are quite local. Went into the Kitchen at Combe for lunch. We had to wait behind the rope to be seated. I can understand this is busy times, but it was quiet and being seated involved the member of staff giving us a menu and help yourself to a seat. All well and good, but waiting what seemed a very long time behind the rope without even a menu to peruse was just plain daft and annoying. My wife wanted the jacket potato, but it clearly said on the menu this wasn’t available on a Sunday. We spotted a jacket spud being served and after an enquiry we were told we can ignore the menu in that respect. Whilst waiting at our table, we felt sorry for people coming in that wanted a seat with a brolly for shade, the only two tables suitable had ‘reserved for large parties’ on them. These tables held about 6-7 people and remained unused all the time we were there. Seemed ridiculous. Anyway, the positives, the food was promptly served and the quality good and the surroundings were very pleasant and a delight to sit in. Will we come back? Unlikely I feel, it could be so much better but needs better organisation and removal of petty rules.

Car broke down on the Axminster bypass: when fixed I had lost the will to drive another 4 hours so checked into the George Inn. In the middle of an outrageously good Halloween party, the staff were never the less attentive, sympathetic and checked me in quickly. Recently refurbished, the hotel is really and very well furnished and decorated - super comfortable, super clean, super cozy. It’s a little gem, with parking - great value too!
