Car broke down on the Axminster bypass: when fixed I had lost the will to drive another 4 hours so checked into the George Inn. In the middle of an outrageously good Halloween party, the staff were never the less attentive, sympathetic and checked me in quickly. Recently refurbished, the hotel is really and very well furnished and decorated - super comfortable, super clean, super cozy. It’s a little gem, with parking - great value too!

Had booked a table for 6:30, on arrival told that food wood not be available yet as the cook had not arrived. I ordered a starter of mushroom with garlic and parmesan. When it finally arrived after the cook arrived..terrible mushroom and I garlic taste and a few odd little bits of parmesan with no taste. 2 people ordered the fish and chips with 'Home Made Tartar Sauce'. I ordered rare steak with a pepper sauce. Firstly no condiments arrived and no cutlery, I had to go find it, Fish and chips arrived without an explanation as there was no Home made Tartar Sauce' when we did ask he said they had run out and THE DELIVERY HAD NOT ARRIVED. !!! Home made ????? Steak arrived very Well Done not rare so sent it back and it was not pepper sauce it was a pepper oily water. Second stake arrived only just warm and very late . Orders a drink at the table, it never arrived so had to go fetch it as he'd had not poured it after some time. The waiter then came over and stated in an agressive tone "what's the problem, you seem a bit antsi " obviously oblivious to the issues and no customer service skills at all. I would suggest don't bother eating there until they sort themselves out and get more staff who are professional and a real chef. A total dissatisfied event.

Moderately competent cooking served by a disinterested staff; and the kitchen stops when they wish-they are advertising for a chef and its fairly clear why...

A pleasant setting, with helpful, friendly staff. The quality of the food was excellent. As a Coeliac, I need a gluten free menu - and this was not a problem here.

An early evening meal in a very friendly inn. Our first time here but will certainly come back when in the area. Attentive service and a lovely meal.

We called on the off-chance for a pot of tea and an afternoon snack. Having seen the wonderful looking chocolate cake on the counter we were unable to ignore it! The pot of tea was perfect and the home made chocolate cake was delicious. If you are a cake person, then highly recommend. The waitress was very efficient and friendly and served us while we were sitting comfortably in the bar area.

For those who love "the real England" of little villages in the deep countryside with a pub, church and shop, Chardstock is perfect. The George Inn is a classic little Inn that has been there for centuries. The pub itself is lovely and the rooms are pretty new with good bathrooms etc. The only drawback for us is we were pretty much kicked out of our room to at 10:00am, leaving us scrambling to get our bags in the car and leave. Shame that.

Visiting the area, we happened across this great place for a Friday evening meal. The new publicans who took over last year couldn’t have been more welcoming and we had a lovely table. Locally sourced food was great quality - particularly the salad from Trill Farm - and the homemade lasagne was clearly homemade and delicious! Stanley the pub Hungarian puli is awesome company as well.

We have just come back from the George and can't fault a single thing. We had a lovely comfortable, clean room. The food was excellent and Richard and Clare were so hospitable and made us very welcome. We can't wait to return 😀

We had friends visiting for the weekend and took them to The George for dinner. Great home cooked meals. Portions are large and great value for money. The home made shortcrust pie was especially popular with our group. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was relaxed and the staff are very friendly. What more could you ask for? Highly recommend.

Stunning, very old atmospheric pub in a lovely village setting. Friendly, maybe a bit disorganised service. Unfortunately VERY average (at best!) pub grub meal. Soggy battered fish with over-cooked peas and hard, dried, overdone chips. Fish pie (small) with minimal fish but 2 big bones. Good prices but unappetising food.Pity ... the outstanding venue and location deserves better.

Well done the new owners and the very accommodating, versatile chef. A marvellous ploughmans lunch, wonderful beer and an amazing pub with so much history (ghosts, coffins and the Spanish Armada). We'll be back time and again.

Sunday roast, very average. Still early days for the new owners. Will give it another go sometime. No point in focusing on the negatives.

Una estancia muy agradable, nuestra habitación tenía todo lo que necesitábamos. Sin embargo, el baño estaba en mal estado y no muy limpio. . . Una auténtica pena. El personal y el desayuno era tan bueno como cualquier sitio que he estado.

We went there for dinner on a Tuesday night, the steak was overcooked and the beef and guiness pie needed more cooking time. Huge servings - far too big in fact. We wont be back

Decided to visit the Combe Garden Centre, overdue really as we are quite local. Went into the Kitchen at Combe for lunch. We had to wait behind the rope to be seated. I can understand this is busy times, but it was quiet and being seated involved the member of staff giving us a menu and help yourself to a seat. All well and good, but waiting what seemed a very long time behind the rope without even a menu to peruse was just plain daft and annoying. My wife wanted the jacket potato, but it clearly said on the menu this wasn’t available on a Sunday. We spotted a jacket spud being served and after an enquiry we were told we can ignore the menu in that respect. Whilst waiting at our table, we felt sorry for people coming in that wanted a seat with a brolly for shade, the only two tables suitable had ‘reserved for large parties’ on them. These tables held about 6-7 people and remained unused all the time we were there. Seemed ridiculous. Anyway, the positives, the food was promptly served and the quality good and the surroundings were very pleasant and a delight to sit in. Will we come back? Unlikely I feel, it could be so much better but needs better organisation and removal of petty rules.

We stopped at the cafe for a coffee and to warm up and decided to have lunch. I had the all day small breakfast which was excellent, the bacon was really tasty and everything was cooked perfectly, not greasy at all. My wife had the Tuna melt panini which she said was the most delicious food she had on holiday in Devon. The service was friendly and quick and everything was spotless.

I was so surprised it was amazing. We had a family meal coming in from the rain. Service was attentive and quick. Drinks arrived, and the food was ordered. When the burgers arrived, they looked fantastic, and they didn't disappoint 👌. We had a variety of types. Mine was the chicken burger with loaded fries. I have to admit my first thoughts were totally blown away. This place is definitely going in my revisit list as we regularly go to exmouth. Well done, you, for fantastic experience 👏 👍
