Called in for a couple of drinks before heading off for diner. The pub was quiet but friendly and welcoming and the barman helped our friend select her wine by giving her a taste of the one she fancied. To be honest I look upon him as an alchemist - we live locally and avoid Palmers beer when we can. However, our choices of Gold and 200 turned out to be high quality. The guy’s a magician. The pub is conveniently situated too, you can use parking behind Waitrose and nip into the pub that way👍

Staying in Bridport with two friends who were on their first visit, The Ropemakers was my first choice to show them as the full array of Palmers beers are always kept in excellent condition. A lovely, welcoming and friendly pub, very much a locals pub. It was definitely our favourite pub during our stay in Bridport.

My wife fancied listening to the folk rock band playing at this pub the evening that we visited so we decided to take dinner here while we waited. The fare was standard pub grub but no less enjoyable for this. A minor quibble about one of the portion of chips (they were tepid at best) was quickly dealt with to our complete satisfaction by the management. (TBH, having mentioned it to our server I wasn’t going to make a fuss but the news got back to the management and they insisted on dealing with it - which they did quickly and without a fuss. It is service like this that makes the difference between a good and a poor establishment, so ten out of ten for that alone.) My fish and chips was perfectly acceptable but my wife’s mussels (from the specials board) were close to the very best that she has ever had and that is truly saying something as the competition includes many many other examples from much grander fine dining establishments. Beautifully plump and at least twice the size of the more usual offerings from other establishments. To top it all the bar proudly sported no less than six real ales on hand pump and I thoroughly enjoyed several pints of the Tally Ho. Such a pleasant change to see such a wide range on offer rather than the all too common reluctantly provided single “guest” ale. Watch out for the kitchen closing early at 20:00 on Saturdays.

Well, what a disappointment. The pub was very interesting inside, with that oldie worldly atmosphere. The staff pleasant. However the quality of the beer on over was poor to say the least. It was the local Bridport brewery mix of beers, so I was surprised at the tasteless, well I say tasteless, as the taste was awful. The beer was almost ice cold, not room temperature it should be. I know lots of people drink ice cold beer, but that’s just poor education on their part. It’s a very sad reflection on the brewery that they allow their products to be served in so poor a fashion. Never again.

Our second lunch here in as many months, and as enjoyable as the first. This 300-year old pub is jam-packed with sporting, maritime and other memorabelia and antiques. Even the ceilings are covered! We dined inside. There's loads of space, nooks, crannies, solid tables for various numbers of people. Much more than you'd expect from what you see outside. The menu is extensive, plenty for everyone, and well-priced. Ingredients are mainly sourced locally, fresh, and the food is prepped and cooked by the pub's kitchen team. My gammon, eggs and chips was terrific; packed with flavour, huge and looked super too. Great value. The others in our group had various sandwiches, all excellent. The staff were friendly, helpfull and efficient. Spot-on. The Ropemakers is located on West Street, Bridport's main high street, near Waitrose. 2 steps up through the front door. A few small tables and chairs outside on the pavement, plus a lovely partially-covered outdoor dining/drinking area at the back... The latter seems mainly to be used by smokers, but is ok if you don't mind that. We ate there on our first visit, and it was a shame about the cigarette smoke. Still, 300-year old pubs were not designed with today's customs and preferences in mind, and this pub succeeds in catering for everyone. Huge thanks to the chef + team, and the bar staff too... "Ook!" Lovely pub, fantastic food, friendly, atmospheric. We look forward to our 3rd visit next month!

Came in with a few friends last week. Found the drinks very expensive but everywhere else busy. Went upto the bar and got a rather abrupt welcome by an American woman. Nobody else was queuing so i don't know why she had an issue that i shouted over to friend what they wanted. If there were others waiting i'd understand.. this added 5 seconds to the order. "Do you know what you want now" with a sarcastic tone was not warranted. this tone continued as well as snarky little digs. So rude my wife had to laugh! Didn't want to give our money so ended up going to the Woodman in South street.. cheaper, great service and lovely selection of beers. Sorted.

I had one of the best roast dinners ever in this pub, not for the first time. The beef brisket was so tender, it fell apart, vegetables, cooked to perfection, and even with my several food allergies, they still managed to accommodate me including desert. The atmosphere in the pub is fantastic, very relaxed, and even though it was very busy, we hardly had to wait for our food. Can’t wait to go back to eat here again, highly recommended!

Had my daughter and grandchildren down from London for a Christmas lunch. Despite a fully booked pub service was prompt and staff were attentive. Food was good quality and we were all very happy with our meals. Not cheap but that’s what you get with Palmers pubs and they have something of a monopoly in the area. My family loved the Ropemakers and are looking forward to returning. A proper English pub. Have seen some of the negative reviews and I wonder at times what some people expect. It’s a big, busy pub and not all tables are visible from the bar. Grab a drink from the bar and relax while you wait, although we had no waiting time at all. If you’re in a rush go to McDonalds. If you’re a pub person we can thoroughly recommend The Ropies.

We went on a Christmas Do last night to The Ropemakers. We've always loved this pub, the food is proper 'pub grub' and our dog is always made welcome. Last night we had the best meal, hubby had roast turkey with all the very many trimmings, I had a wee taste of his turkey, lovely and moist. I had a Huxley salad with potatoes, ooh yummy. Desserts were quality too. The crackers were a surprise - see the gift pic below. There were 42 folk in our lively group, the lovely young staff worked really hard and the Landlady came round frequently to check all was well.

Ropies should be great.. its a big comfortable pub in the centre of town. Unfortunately there's a false sense of security and the prices sting! Drink prices especially high. Food is rather poor. We went for roasts and the potatoes weren't crispy at all just oily and soft.. tough meat. Frozen Yorkshire pudding just really naff. We paid more for food and drinks than some restaurants where the standards were alot higher. Bridport just needs a good well priced pub with decent food. Unfortunately I've had better meals in spoons.. Service is sometimes good and sometimes awful. Kitchen staff swearing about other staff.. other staff gobbling off about kitchen. Creates a lovely environment..

Lovely pub with lots of rope. Good local ale and very nice pub food, but the best thing by far is the warm friendly welcome from great people who work here!

A reasonable country pub with a range of Palmers beers and a satisfactory menu. It was also reasonably priced.

We stayed nearby and walked up the lane to the pub hoping for an evening meal, but it was all closed up and the garden was overgrown. Possibly it’s fallen victim to the lockdown? (The last review was February 2020.) It didn’t seem as if anyone was at home. A great shame for such an ancient establishment if it has gone to the wall. 😢

Ria went above and beyond today to make us feel valued customers and made sure we had everything we needed to thoroughly enjoy the foods we bought. The selection of pastries, cakes we tried today are the best we have had from a bakery. Thankyou
