We stayed nearby and walked up the lane to the pub hoping for an evening meal, but it was all closed up and the garden was overgrown. Possibly it’s fallen victim to the lockdown? (The last review was February 2020.) It didn’t seem as if anyone was at home. A great shame for such an ancient establishment if it has gone to the wall. 😢

Having heard about the new ownership/management (thank goodness!) - we set off this evening, thirsty for pint or two - only to find at 8:50pm, the pub was shut, with a large 'Open' sight above the door. Given the 'off the beaten track' setting the pub enjoys, and alternative nearby alternative is 5 ish miles away and given how keen we are to see this once wonderful pub restored to it's former glory - we left a little miffed. Please sort your opening hours out! We'd love to come back and support you!

As the landlady allows campers to stay over we took advantage and had a very pleasant evening, we ordered food which arrived very quickly and was extremely tasty, no complaints there. We chatted with locals and visitors alike and although the pub wasn’t busy, this is a sad sign of the times for many rural, old fashioned pubs but we still had a very pleasant evening. The landlady was very nice and gave good service, the beer was great too. Best wishes to Pauline, take care.

I was shocked how dirty the pub was and general state of it was bad also the person behind the bar was wearing dirty clothes and preparing a sandwich. The pub was empty. My drink tasted very odd. We came for a friends walk and lunch. The walk around the Marshwood Vale was amazing (especially the iron age hill forts). The pub is very old fashioned in décor and the menu is limited. Nevertheless the service was friendly and attentive. I was surprised there was only one real ale on tap, but it tasted perfect. The only downside was the state of the toilets. They definitely needed a good hoover around to clear all the dead flies and cobwebs. I would definitely comeback again.

A chance stop at this ancient pub was a delight. The old ham dryer above the fireplace is a reminder of its long history. The landlady gave us a lovely welcome and our dog Phoebe. We had ciders which was just what we need after a tramp round The Cobb at Lyme and a hearty ham, egg and chips. You can tell a lot about a pub from the quality of the ham, egg and chips. The ham was sweet, the eggs deep orange yolked and the chips crisp. Just what a village pub should be.

We went there on our monthly walk. The Bottle Inn is a great base for walking around the very scenic Marshwood Vale. We parked in the rather scruffy car park and after our walk, ventured into this wonderful olde world pub. The licensee greeted us, warmly and our pre-orders were all served promptly. They are a free house and have some very good beers. Mine was excellent. I had the ham baguette, salad and cheesy chips. Thick slices of delicious ham in a very nice short, stubby baguette. Chips were very good and the side salad crisp and perfect. I saw a very generous bowl of mixed vegetables that were shared amongst some of my companions. The chap next to me had the steak and kidney pie. If mine hadn't been so good I would have been jealous. He said it was excellent with a good proportion of kidney to meat. There were 14 of us and the service and food can be highly recommended. if the car park was surfaced and perhaps fenced it would have scored 5 easily. A great find and I will go again for dinner very soon

Situated on the main road through the village of Marshwood this pub is easily accessible and with a good sized car park. Very old traditional pub inside with open fire one end and gas fire the other, with bar in the centre. Despite arriving close to closing time and the pub was already empty of guests, our request for lunch was met with a very positive reply. The food appeared quite quickly, piping hot and excellent. Thick slices of hand cut high quality ham, great chips, lovely free range eggs and a fresh tasty salad. Reasonable value too. Worth a visit.

We are two couples who came to The Bottle for a light lunch after 1pm on Wednesday 12 December having read good reviews of the place. It is a very attractive, ancient and unspoilt building and we had an excellent, inexpensive light lunch in the main bar. However there was absolutely no heating though an open wood fire had just been lit which did nothing to relieve the discomfort of the cold.

My husband and myself stopped at this Inn on the way back to our accommodation from a day in Sidmouth. It looked very inviting and characterful, although it has to be said the building definitely requires some extensive upgrading including the toilets which badly let it down. However, the delightful owner more than made up for the fabric of the place. From when we entered he went out of his way to meet our needs and we had one of the best meals of our short holiday. My fish and chips was totally fab, and I'm not prone to say that about fish and chips to be honest! My husband really enjoyed chatting about the history of the inn and particularly enjoyed hearing that it was home to the world championships for stinging nettle eating! We laughed so much about that! But thank you so much for genuine hospitality, to Michael and Pauline. A true charming English couple from one ex pat and her Scottish husband.

What a place, we loved it & wished we'd found it sooner on our week in Hewood as we'd have been back every night. A very unchanged, no-frills pub, that probably looks very similar to the way it did back in the 16thC! Atmospheric & Charming 2-bars, with a smattering of friendly locals & walkers as customers on the nights we went. 40's music playing in the background. The landlord is as friendly as he needs to be, maintaining a discreet distance & he looks after his customers well. The food choice is better than any chain-pub we've been to, whilst remaining better than normal "pub grub". it's well cooked & tasty, good value (£13 for a Sirloin, most other mains around the £11-12 mark) & made from local products where possible. A good choice of ales including my favourite, Hobgoblin, with Thatchers Gold Cider on draft & a couple of good choices of red & white to go with your dinner (Wine was very reasonable) We ate there on 2 nights & both times paid around £34 for drinks & 2 main-meals.

There are three real ales on the pumps with extra pumps for when things get busier. To start with they are only doing bar snacks but I was told a full menu will follow soon. At first, you see the outside if the Bottle inn... freshly painted, lovely thatch, big pub garden, ample parking and a huge field for camping.Once you walk inside none of the latter can make up for the experience. The bar staff are drab and unkept, like the decor. The cleanliness was non existent and the lovely dog teddy who greets you is gorgeous but he absolute stinks of urine. It really took my breathe away and I had to go to the toilet, to wash my hands and almost throw up. Walking through you go a huge function room which is clogged with unused furniture etc and the floor covered in dirt, hair and God knows what else! I found it difficult to drink my beer after watching the bar lady wipe other glasses with it, wondering what else it had been used for.I rated this pub as a 1 throughout as 0 isn't an option. And a Yes to the fast food section as there was a worn out notice stuck to the wall advertising pre ordering pies for Monday night's and rated mid-high on the expense as the pie poster had £10 written in it.

There was also live music supplied by a couple who played at the Inn every Sunday evening. This was a very friendly inn and is just how a country pub should be. There was even a dog welcoming everyone as they arrived at the door.It was lovely to find a place like this such a short distance from home. The Bottle Inn started life as an ale house in 1585. No bad thing of course, and there's always a decent range of interesting ales and ciders on tap.In the spring it hosts the National Nettle Eating Championships.I find it a shame that food is no longer on offer, as even simple food such as a Ploughmans, or a Pork Pie with pickles and salad can enhance a decent drink. Still, the atmosphere is good and it's great to come across a genuinely local pub with a beer-garden and friendly service. The building has seen better days and is probably in need of sprucing up, but at least it hasn't been destroyed by developers or multi-national breweries.

We visited this pub on a very wet July day as it is in the Good Beer Guide, and we were not disappointed. There was a fire burning and the selection of beers was impressive. The pub is small but offers a warm welcome from staff and the owner's dog. The only reason I cannot give this a five star is that the very hairy dog had obviously got wet a few times that day and there was a distinct aroma of eau de dog in the room. Putting that aside, this pub is also a recommended place for you dog lovers out there as dogs are most definitely welcome. Been to Dorset for over 20 years and just discovered the Bottle Inn on a random Wednesday night by chance. What a welcome the landlord and the lady at the bar were delightful and loved a good chat. 5 ales on which is amazing for a pub in the middle of nowhere and top quality. The Bottle Inn is one of very few real pubs left where the important ingredients are the beer and the feeling of somewhere welcoming. If only my local was the Bottle Inn.I was told they have a popular curry night once a week served from the old vintage bus parked in the car park and a pizza night again with a mobile wood burning pizza unit. I would ring to check times it seemed as if it was not regular. Must comment on the decor. It is the sort of look that is all the rage now in the trendy parts of stoke Newington Hackney area in London where every thing is battered and none of the furniture is the same. There the look is created in the Bottle Inn it is for real. If you are on holiday in the Lyme Regis Charmouth Area and you want to visit a great special pub with a difference put this pub on your things to do list. Ps this pub is super dog friendly.

We went here for a drink (they only do food on certain nights) and were pleased to see discounts for CAMRA members (nice touch) as well as possibly the best selection of draught and boxed ciders I've ever had the pleasure of choosing from. Shame this place is out of the way so I had to drive; we considered getting a taxi back there later that same evening. The staff and regulars who were there made us feel very welcome, and we all had a good chat - not something you get in just any pub, and it's those touches that make the visit memorable. Next time we're in the area we'll definitely get a cab out there for a few drinks, and to admire the huge collection of pump clips on display - it's like the i-spy book for real ale fans!

Had one of the best curries of my life from here...but not exactly the pub...from the old bus parked outside! Great, friendly service and tasty delicious home-cooked curry from scratch...can't fault it!

I no longer drink - Took friend who is a member of CAMRA who wanted to go. Very warm welcome from all inside including the dog. This place is larger than you think, looks a bit worn out but its a pub a real pub. You want to roll on the floor and spill crisp get drunk and soak it all up. I am told the beers are excellent (they tried two they know) There is no food you can have a pork pie a real pork pie. Fridays there is Thai curry night. Remember this is a real pub. Its worth going to as a reminder what has been lost around this country a real pub. My only two suggestions - toilets need a coat of paint - allow customers to bring their own food turn the table on you can bring your own alcohol when you go out to non licenced restaurants etc. This is a pub I've got over it and despite now being a non drinker will go back will take friends there and will take my dog.

Now this pub' has everything, charm, history (15th century), eccentricity, totally friendly people, especially friendly owners, beautiful atmosphere, and beautiful curry served from a converted bus beside the pub! I don't know if they do that every night but obviously they did when we chanced to visit but the curry was delicious and very good value. I'm not a beer drinker but I noticed a vast selection of real ales. Everything here was just perfect, a bit like a scene from 'The Darling Buds of May'! Just perfect.

Popped in for the first time on Tuesday 26th August with my son, my neice and her partner. We were made welcome first by Teddy (the dog) then by the landlady, The beers were first class we popped in again on Wednesday 27th August and again made welcome this time by the landlord and the customers, we popped in again on Thursday the 28th August, (can anyone see a pattern developing here)? By the Friday it was like our local, such was the friendliness of the owners, staff and customers. Conratulations to all for developing such a brilliant pub atmosphere. Now back in East Anglia I have fond memories of a great holiday enhanced by this brilliant pub and its fine selection of beers.

We popped in last Sunday for a quick pint also had very nice pork pie and chicken and ham pie. Will definitely call again when in the area. So nice to go to a proper pub which has not been modernised and keeps the traditional decor.

We went there yesterday evening and had Thai food for dinner. Many years ago I had Thai food in a pub in Chideock, and it was my worst ever meal out.Last evening in The Bottle was definitely my best Asian food in a pub (why not the best ever Thai food? I have spent some time in Thailand!)Good flavours, excellent portions, and the beer selection is brilliant (go easy on the Engine Oil!)Today we just wanted a pub lunch ... every pub for miles around was closed (come on, folks, it's a tourist destination). But The Bottle was open. They had no chef (it was 3pm) but they came up with two excellent pork pies. Seems to me that at The Bottle, their whole attitude is, "the answer's 'yes', now, what's the question". It isn't bijou, it isn't boutique, it isn't fashionable ... it's a good, old-fashioned English pub, with a brilliant attitude to customer service. And they are dog-friendly! Works for us! I have ticked for romance ... we were here for our tenth wedding anniversary ... romantic for us!

Delighted to see this lovely pub back in business. We called in lunch time last week after a five mile local walk just for a couple of pints. Landlord very welcoming and proudly described his, I think, six real ales on offer. Spoilt for choice. I can't recall the name of the beer but it was excellent. Food on offer was a range of sandwiches, a chillie or home made pork pies, £2 each. We opted for the pies and they were delicious. A very friendly good drinking pub.

This pub is only ten mills or so from us towards the coast, and over the last couple of years we had had some lovely summer meal/drinks here,But the last couple to few occasion we had called in for a meal(phoning first) we have been told the kitchen is still under reservation,we only serve sandwiches or they are cooking out of a nasty looking bus. Then on arriving on the off chance to have a beer and snack, with No cash the didn't have a card machine. So they need a big kick up the backside to bring then into real life, now we just pass.

I live quite local to The Bottle Inn and have popped in a couple times of late. The real ale and cider choices are fantastic, you won't find another pub within a 10 mile radius that offers this choice. The landlord and lady chatty and pleasant also the chap behind the bar.loved the atmosphere and also proves it is a nice place to go by the amount of cars in the carpark , we had to park in the overflow field!Tried the curry bus on Friday, great idea and curry was nice just a shame there is no kitchen yet to turn out some proper pub grub. All in all a great place for a drink, there isn't a village pub around here that's so busy as this one so it shows the new management are doing something right

We have been a few times over the last three months twice for the curry bus (on Friday evening) and once for the jazz afternoon on alternate Sundays. The curry bus night is great, get your curries & bring in to the bar & enjoy with one of the pubs beers. Was very crowded first time so we got there early on 2nd visit to get a table easily.Jazz afternoon really relaxing - looking forward to summer months in the garden.Landlord Nigel and family are very welcoming. We recommend anyone to go and see.

Have been looking forward to trying this pub for a while, ended up there last night, intending to eat there after a drink. I felt like I was imposing, the bar staff seemed more interested in discussing their problems with work than serving us a drink! They continued this discussion the entire time we were being served! The decor is not great, looks really tired and the room at the back is the same. I was so disappointed and will not be returning here!

A lovely old bar, a free house with good real ales, and always has a nice atmosphere. The Curry bus visits on Friday nights, which makes a nice change. Look out for live music nights.

Having visited the pub only to find itstill closed i was advised by Nigel who was working outside clearing some storm damage to a tree thatThe Bottle in will be opening again during early summer as a traditional ale house with country dining featuring many cask ales and traditional cuisine with a fantastic rustic atmosphere in keeping with the age of the pub.He also confrimed that The world famous nettle eating competition will also take place in june/july after further renovations have been completed.By all accounts The Bottle will be a fantastic place to meet and enjoy a beer or have a bite with a fantastic Sunday Carvery and Jazz.We Bottle fans will look forward to the pub opening again. Good luck to The Bottle.

We'd heard that The Bottle had reopened. Last time we had visited it was dire - unwelcoming, grotty food and sulky service (Easter 2009). we hoped for better this time - it used to have a good reputation. But was closed - permanently by the looks of it - chain across the car park. This is a great site; how come no one can make a success of it?

We were a group of ten, staying just down the road, we ate in twice in the bar and the three times in the restaurant, service was just as good in both. Shelly and Simon were great hosts, one of our party had a birthday, they even gave her a birthday card. All of the staff at the Bottle Inn were very friendly, but did not crowed you. The carvery was very good, we were recommended it by several locals. When we came we were customers, when we left we were friends. That just about sums up the Bottle Inn.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food here. The pub has new tenants and much needs to be done to "tidy" the place up but I am sure given time they will sort out the garden and refresh the paint work. I went for a meal at the weekend and the dining room was happily busy considering the huge choice of eateries in the area and need to keep people coming for meals to keep a decent trade. There is a bar at the back for the locals to enjoy a pint and chat. Service was carried out by a school girl who was charming when politely chastened to bring the wine etc. I left a tip to encourage her. Chips lovely, duck excellent and my friend enjoyed a steak. Not barmy prices. I gather music events are held in the back bar but would suspect the average diner would have departed before any music started - unless of course that was part of their evenings entertainment. We must support local pubs like this who have had to turn to dining to keep a trade. The building is thatched and just what a country "pub" should look like.
