I met some friends at Mote House for a festive afternoon tea and it was a wonderful afternoon. The whole place was decorated beautifully for Christmas, everything was clean and comfortable, the food was tasty and plentiful, the staff were welcoming and friendly without being intrusive and there was as much tea as we could drink on offer. I thoroughly recommend this afternoon tea; it was a real treat.

We went as a party of five to The Romney for Sunday Lunch. Service was attentive and professional, food was excellent value for money, with a choice of 4 starters, 4 mains and 4 desserts, and the dining room was a very pleasant room, with most tables taken. Parking was not an issue; we simply parked in the public car park, £2 for up to six hours and walked down to Mote House. My 92 year father was able to manage this walk so it is not too taxing. Would definitely recommend and will return.

My wife and I have been here several times previously for coffee and cake on a walk around the park and have always found it a haven of peace set in a lovely location. Today we returned for Sunday lunch and were delighted with our experience .The dining room was lovely, smartly presented and remarkedly good value. We had a choice of three roasts and also two or three courses ( starter, main and puddings). The young man in charge of the restaurant was efficient and polite and added to our enjoyment of our lunch. All three courses were delicious and our experience was very positive , we will return to this hidden gem, thank you.

My daughter booked afternoon tea for 4 of us for Bank Holiday Monday. When we were shown to our table, the manager did not look happy, and certainly did not help us with our seats, and gave us no menu. The waitress was of Eastern European origin and was also not welcoming. As we sat there we realised that without a menu we could not see what our options were. My daughter went to request one. She asked the manager, but before he had time to answer, the waitress could be heard saying “I have already given her one” - which of course she had not. We felt that this was such a poor start for what we had anticipated, and a definite dampener, that we decided to leave. Not a good introduction to what might have been an opportunity to consider purchasing an apartment there. No way, now!!

Chloe our waitress was lovely, so polite and helpful. It was a perfect evening but why were we the only customers on a Saturday evening when everything is so good? OK the parking was a bit difficult to find and it is a short walk to the restaurant but you can drop off at the door then move the car. Today we had lunch at this restaurant in Audley House, Mote Park, Maidstone. This is a strange concept. The building has been restored to it's original beauty, and is set in well cared for parkland. You have to be over 55 years old and no children allowed. Preferential treatment and rates are given to residents. Reception prefer 24 hours notice from non residents and you have to park a little way away in the "council" car park. Having accepted all this, we found the environment to be very relaxing, full of impressive grand architecture. Service was relaxed but good, food above average. Lovely views over the park. The restaurant is in Lord Romney's former residence which has undergone extensive restoration. The surroundings are first class and the staff very attentive, the menu is very limited and dishes are frequently not available. THE QUALITY OF THE FOOD IS VERY VARIABLE AND LARGELY DEPENDS, APPARENTLY, ON WHICH CHEF IS ON!. I totally agree with other comments that it is extremely hard to find. However when we spoke to the manager he said the Local Council had refused to let them put up signs giving directions for aesthetic reasons. ie An area of natural beauty. However it was very worth our efforts as "The Afternoon Tea" was very good. Perhaps we have a small criticism, in that the emphasis was on scones and cakes, rather than savoury. There was only four small different finger sandwiches and a few more would have given a better balance to "The Tea". The hall and tea room were spectacular and but lacked a bit atmosphere as we were the only four people taking tea. The staff were friendly and the service was very good. Now we know how to find the place, we certainly make another visit

The sandwiches were full to bursting with delicious fillings, perfect sized finger cakes and although the scones were slightly on the smaller size than I have had at other afternoon teas they tasted yummy and if I'm honest meant I left fully satisfied but not uncomfortably stuffed. The choice of background music was perfect and just the right volume. Overall my nan and I had a lovely afternoon and I will go back!

The Romney Restaurant claims to be open to the general public as opposed to its 'Senior Living' resident clientele.I couldn't recommend it though. Firstly you'd be lucky to find the place, there's no signage anywhere apart from one feeble sign at the front gate that's only visible if you arrive from one direction. The car parking nearby is reserved for residents, so the general public have to park 100 yards or more away in a car park with no Tarmac. Fine if it's dry, but come winter and you won't appreciate the trek. They aren't trying to make you feel welcome or wanted! The room is pleasantly decorated, but a bit lacking in atmosphere, maybe due to the high ceilings.Whilst the cutlery and crockery were of a good quality, the food was basic stuff, OK nicely presented, but mass market scampi in bread crumbs is pub grub in my book, it's not expensive, but for what it is it isn't a bargain either. There was no bread for the table and no wine list (the waitress had committed what there was to memory). Service was leisurely, we arrived at 1:15 and left a 3:30, OK we weren't rushing but that's not exactly speedy for two courses plus coffee, and they were not busy today. A huge ice bucket was left on the table, somewhat incongruously, not what a commercial restaurant would do in my opinion. So, despite management protestations, this really Isn't a commercial restaurant looking for customers, it's just the establishments catering facility that's happy to take your money if you can find the place and drop in. As a commercial restaurant it isn't really up to speed, and not worth the effort involved in finding it. If you do end up there you'll not get the feeling you are wanted either.Mark

Turned up at Mote house and walked through the wooded area which is absolutely stunning and into the dining area where we sat in comfy chairs in the window. A lovely place for afternoon tea with great decor which is modern and sophisticated. The service was good, however, we were unfortunately very very let down by the food itself. We had afternoon tea which obviously included scones however, we were told they were very busy at lunch service and this really showed in the food. The scones were completely raw in the centre and as we cut into it and pulled them open we were greeted with stringy dough in the centre. The waitress took them away and then without any communication returned after 5 minutes with the same scones which had been shoved back in the oven for a few minutes. They were completely in edible and therefore we went away hungry and unhappy! I have had many afternoon teas in the past as it is a favourite of mine and never experienced anything quite as poor as today! Such a shame as other than that it would have been a good visit! I would like to add that I was given discount on payment and therefore did not have to pay full price however I will not be returning or recommending this venue for afternoon tea unfortunately!

I know it was three courses, but both the starter and the dessert were very very small. The main course was acceptable, but nothing better than you could do at home for considerably less. The parking. we were told at the time of booking where we should park, however, there is absolutely NO VISITOR PARKING. what an completely ridiculous situation to have. how any restaurant or bar can provide no parking at all is beyond me. How a company which markets itself for elderly people and their visitors can do this just smacks of incompetence and stupidityThere are several empty "resident" parking spaces and I tried to park in one of these. I was them told I would have to move my car to the local Council car park which is quite a walk away. There was somebody going back and forth with a golf buggy but I was told this system is only used on busy days..All in all I wouldn't return because of both the cost, and the farcical car parking situation

First off, as mentioned by another review, parking is an issue, a big issue. however, we were greeted at the car park (the “burnt ground” I believe it’s called) by Phillip who immediately made us feel welcome and would go on to prove himself one of the best hosts I’ve ever experienced in many, many years of dining out. He was courteous, polite, funny and very knowledgeable about the surroundings, Mote house itself, the menus and the wine selection available. He recommended a fantastic (if slightly expensive) wine to go with our meal and it complimented the food perfectly. The food we had was very good, but even if this hadn’t of been the case we still would have thoroughly enjoyed our evening because of Phillip. The food and drink were ever so slightly expensive, but as it was valentines night you expect to pay a little more. i did look at the normal menu and was very impressed by both the selection and price.Would definitely visit again

I recently took my grandparents to the Romney Restaurant for afternoon tea, to celebrate my grandmother's birthday. I had to give all our ages over the phone when I booked, as the restaurant is adults-only - fair enough, as it is part of the retirement community.Unfortunately, we didn't receive a very nice welcome from one of the residents! The signage around the entrance to the Audley House complex is quite poor, with no visible signs for visitor parking - consequently, we ended up directly in front of the main house, where there are several bays all marked 'residents parking'. At least 7 or 8 of these were free and they didn't appear to be allocated to particular homes, so I pulled into one with the intention of getting my grandmother out of the car and into the building (she has hurt her back and cannot walk very far), then immediately moving it in search of visitor parking. As soon as I'd opened my car door, I was shouted at by one of the residents who was unloading shopping from her car. I politely apologised and explained the situation, but she continued to verbally abuse us as we made our slow, shuffling way towards the main door. My grandmother got very upset, and unfortunately this almost ruined the experience before we even got in the door! When we were seated, it was lovely - the house has been beautifully converted and furnished, and the lady on duty kindly sat us in the restaurant even though we'd only booked for the bistro. We were very well looked after, with plenty of coffee and tea, as well as fresh sandwiches, cakes and scones with jam and cream. Only criticism is that the scones were cold and a bit hard (maybe kept in the fridge?) but still tasted great. The views of the park from the restaurant are stunning, but it could have done with a little background music as there were only four of us in there so we were nervous of talking too loudly as it felt a bit like being in a library. Tops marks to all the staff as they were lovely and friendly. When I went to move my car (less than 2 minute's later!), I was directed to the visitor car park, which was a few minutes' walk up an unveven, gravelled track, which my grandparents would never have been able to walk down - it seems odd that a restaurant catering for the over 50s has no parking within a few feet of the door! All in all the restaurant and afternoon tea itself was great, but unfortunately soured by the rude reception. I totally understand that residents may have issues with diners using their spaces, but this is a problem the building management need to sort out as there is currently nowhere to drop 'less-mobile' visitors.

We have now had two Sunday lunches at The Romney restaurant and Bistro in Mote House, which is situated in 420 acres of the beautiful Mote Park in Maidstone. Mote House is part of a retirement village within Mote Park and the restaurant, whilst servicing the needs of the residents of the retirement village is also open to the public. There are access and availability conditions, for example there is an informal dress code (fairly informal though) and residents are given priority on booking seating in the restaurant. We have never seen children in the restaurant or bistro so it may be best to check beforehand if you are planning a family meal. Advance booking is very advisable. We had booked our most recent visit about two weeks in advance, but on the morning of the Sunday we were visiting the restaurant telephoned us to say that as the restaurant had been fully booked by residents of the retirement village, we would be seated in the Bistro. Being aware of residents being given priority we were not particularly bothered by this but I asked that as my wife had back problems whether a padded seat could be made available for her. I was pleasantly assured that this would not be a problem. When we arrived our table for four had been set with two fully padded seats fort he two ladies in the party and were judged as extremely comfortable. Eating in the Bistro was every bit as good as eating in the restaurant as we had previously done. The set price menu offered three courses for £20.00, (lower for two courses) with about 4 choices for each course. The staff were attentive, extremely pleasant and very helpful. The meal itself could not be faulted. Of course everyone has different likes, dislikes and standards but for us it was just perfect. Well done to all concerned. We will certainly visit again and I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant.

We ate at the Romney on a Sunday lunchtime and can't fault it - the set menu price was reasonable, the food very nice and the service - especially from Armand - was excellent. Two of us have a wheat allergy and although there was no wheat-free bread available they told us that if we were to book again we just needed to let them know a few days in advance so the chef could get some in. Nothing was too much trouble and the surroundings were very nice. It's in a manor house which has been converted into retirement flats, and I'm a bit jealous of the residents - wish I was old enough to move in!

This Restaurant is in Mote House located by the side of Mote Park Lake and has superb views from the dining rooms. We dined in the main restaurant in the evening ~ there is also a Bistro which is mainly open for lunches during the week. The Romney restaurant is part of a major refurbishment of Mote House which has a number of superb (up-market) apartments. The general atmosphere, furniture and fittings are of the highest standard and help to make a very enjoyable dining experience. The Staff are very helpful and attentive, without being intrusive, and there is a wide choice of dishes from the menu.In all, a great experience and highly recommended ~ we are looking forward to our next visit!

A truly beautiful welcome from 2 lovely gentlemen behind the bar. Full of friendliness and joy. Great assistance when choosing a non alcoholic drink. The food, beef cheek suet pudding and mushroom gnocchi were fresh and tasty. It was cooked from the heart with a sprinkling of love. Just what we needed after a tough day. Nothing was too much trouble and the perfect place for mum and son to have a quality meal with quality time together. Living close but not previously visited so definitely will be going back.
