A lovely old Sam Smith's pub which is clearly a very popular local. Comfortable & cosy with some interesting artifacts around the rooms. Open only Thu-Sun at time of writing (August 2024), we went for the 4pm opening time to celebrate my mother-in-law's 94th birthday - she was born in the village of Appleton Roebuck in August 1930 - and the bar quickly filled with folk who were clearly mostly locals. The chat was bubbling and the atmosphere was very pleasant. To the best of my knowledge the pub doesn't currently serve food. There is a large beer garden but dogs are not allowed anywhere in the pub, stars off by this reviewer for those two reasons.

As close to The Moon Under Water as it’s possible to get. Magnificent wet pub, with three fires going in winter and a guaranteed warm-welcome and friendly chat with strangers at all times. No phones or music, just the warm buzz of lively conversation. Truly stunning pub.

This is probably the best Sam Smith's boozer around the York area. A lot of the challengers are shut now, sadly. This pub, flys the flag for how a traditional Sam's watering house should be. Two lovely, local lasses behind the bar. Jo and Amanda. Keeping the place top notch. Beer on point always. Friendly conversation and an acceptance for anyone in there, who wants to converese about any range of subject. I get the feeling both ladies do it more for the love of the pub and the community the pub supports. Rather than any wage or financial advancement. Been great working this year in Appleton Roebuck with this pub opening for a pint after hard days graft. Thurs, Fri. Dan. Gardener

Notice on the door stating that they have a no family policy and families are to make use of the beer garden only - not ideal in winter! If you have a family I would recommend you avoid all Samuel Smiths pubs to avoid an embarrassing rejection from any of their pubs.

Sam Smith's classic old country pub, but no real ale and only Sam Smith products. No phones or music allowed inside so you have the phone users hanging out with the smokers outside

The pub itself is nice and very reasonably priced, but the brewery appears to demand that they only take cash and that customers aren't allowed to use their phones in the pub. No food and only open for 4 days a week. Sadly, a missed opportunity.

Proper country pub. Sam Smith's prices. Dark Mild at £1.34 a pint for nominated drivers. Authentic beams and a cracking cast iron range for winter evenings. What's not to like. Now open after a long hiatus but only Thurs/Friday/Saturday so you need to check

I suppose you know what you're getting when you go into a Sam's pub, staff were very friendly and helpful. I get sign saying that no mobile phones, but how do you stop "receiving text messages" Another pub ruined by Humphrey

We passed through Roebuck-Selby whilst touring in the area - a flat farming community. There wasn’t a soul on the streets and we weren’t sure the place was even open, despite the “Food being Served” sign outside. However, when somone parked his landrover outside and entered we decided to follow suit. We were greeted warmly but just decided to have drinks and enjoy the weak sunshine in the beer garden. Use of mobile phones were discouraged, as this is a Sam Smith’s pub, but maybe no bad thing?. The drinks were amazingly cheap and staff friendly but we had to get back on the road – not so much to do in this town it seems.

Staying over one night in Appleton Roebuck and decided to call in for our evening meal.2 chose the beef lasagne, which both said was Fab,the other 2 said their meal was Fab.I had the liver, which came with 'proper' chips,3 veggies and a lusciously thick onion gravy, this too was Fab.The meals are sensibly priced,as are the drinks;£2 for a pint of Sam Smiths bitter.Outside at the back of the pub is a beer garden + a small grassed football pitch complete with goalposts & nets, great for the kids to have a kick around.Emma the landlady & family along with the local guys we got talking to are absolutely fantastic,we were made so very very welcome. #anighttoremember. I would not hesitate to recommend.

We’re on holiday staying across the road and delighted in discovering a pub 10 yards from the front door. Even better - there’s good beer, good welcome and good surroundings to have a blether and catch up with friends. I love English pubs and this place is a great example of why :)

'Its a great country pub." It is small, friendly and oldy-worldy... This is a 'gem' and is well worth a visit. Lee and Emma will make you feel welcome... Have known the pub for about 16 years. Tip: Nuzzle up next to the Yorkshire Range, if its a chilly night. Or in summer, as it is now, catch the tail of the Scarecrow Festival if you can...

£1.34 for a pint of dark mild! That's right - £1.34! For a pint of beer. This week. In England. One pound and thirty four pence. There should be a prize or an award or something. A round, with nuts, for four adults and four kids cost me less than £20! I live in a sad, impoverished, grabbing world where £20 wouldn't buy you the drinks for the 4 adults and I bitterly regret that we were only passing through and didn't have the time to go back. This is what pubs used to be; landlady and locals were all very welcoming and everyone just got on with talking and having a nice time. No worries about taking out a mortgage to get a round in, no "concept" to try and work out. It could probably do with a bit of a renovation but then it would just be like any other pub - leave it as it is! Didn't eat - wrong time of day but it was recommended by people where we were staying although there was no food on the day we were there (Monday) I could happily have just lived on the beer at £1.34 a pint. I don't know how they make the finances work but everyone on the country should be forced to go here just to see what "the Pub" was like and should be again!!

My friend and I had a wonderful lunch today. Really tasty veggie Thai curry from the board followed by raspberry Bakewell tart and gingerbread hot chocolate. Prompt service and friendly staff.

It was fabulous. The restaurant and toilets were immaculately clean and the staff were very efficient, polite and considerate. Service was fast and they checked on us regularly but not excessively. They cooked a mushroom korma for my daughter with ARFID because there wasn’t anything she would eat on the menu and she thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn’t recommend it enough. After we had finished, they brought out heated wipes for our hands and at the end, they gave us small mint chocolates with the bill, and gave the children some lollipops to enjoy. All meals were delicious, and they even gave me a kind of mint yoghurt because I was finding my curry rather spicy, and it made the meal taste even nicer. My whole family loved the place and will visit again if ever back in York.

sadly disappointed with this venue The food was ok plenty of it Our biggest concern was it was so cold that we ate our lunch in our coats I know that energy bills are high at the moment...but some heating would of been nice....my phone suggested it was 13 degrees...im of the opinion if you are open for business then your customers should be happy with food....drinks....and warmth

Called in today for a bacon and egg sandwich and coffee. I’m coeliac so need gluten free food which they offer. The GF bread was as good as GF bread can be! Plenty of bacon and the egg was delicious. The coffee was also very good. Will definitely be visiting again.
