Over the past eight years i have submitted two previous excellent reviews for this remarkably good gastro pub and hotel. I recently enjoyed a first rate sunday roast in the delightful restaurant and bar. The high standards of both home cooking and friendly service never decline and it all made for a great day out. A big welcoming log fire awaited me after a good walk in the pretty valley that the rock inn occupies. Owners Darren the chef and RUth who manages front of house gave me their usual warm greeting and i rapidly felt at ease and at home. This is a superb eatery that is simple to find, not far out of taunton. Suffice to say you will never be disappointed and are sure to return. Excellent in every regard. Do go and enjoy it !!

My brother in law was staying as a guest while over from Africa and invited his brother and myself for dinner. As a vegetarian I noted that the aubergine parmigiana had Parmesan which is Not suitable for vegetarians as contains rennet. I called to query this and they were very helpful and on arrival said that they could prepare it with cheddar cheese which was vegetarian. It was delicious as were the accompanying potatoes the steak was the best partner had eaten. Staff and atmosphere warm and welcoming felt like a family. Will be back and highly recommend thank you

My fiancé and I booked a table for our last date night before we wed and I can honestly say, that we could not have had a better experience to remember it! We were met at the bar by a lovely lady, full of smiles and so friendly. Such a warm welcome is rare these days! We were sat on a lovely table next to a roaring log fire and placed our orders. For starters we both had a creation of the chefs which was divine! A taleggio cheese fondant. Main course, I had a 12oz Ribeye steak, bone marrow topped with truffle, spinach topped with half a caramelised shallot (I believe) and potato dauphinoise. Hands down the best steak I have ever had in my life!! (and I've eaten many). My fiancé had Feather blade of Aberdeen Angus glazed in black garlic and treacle cooked for 14hrs & served with Cheesy garlic mash. The chef surprised us with some incredible homemade ice-cream after our meal! And we took a portion of their Peanut cheesecake with caramel cream home with us too! Everything was incredible and worth every penny!

Staying locally and we booked into the Rock Inn. What a lovely place, lovely staff and outstanding restaurant class food in a pub environment. I don’t normally eat 3 courses but I did today. Every dish was beautifully presented and tasted fantastic. I had the home made ice cream to finish and it did not disappoint, it was light, creamy and delicious. I would highly recommend the Rock Inn to anyone staying locally to Waterrow, and if you’re passing through stop and eat, you won’t be disappointed.

When I arrived at the property it was locked up, I had to stand in the rain with my luggage and ring someone to let me in. This took me by surprise as I would assume the lady knew they she would have guests arriving. The tour of the pub/hotel area felt very rushed and I was left feeling abit confused about where everything was. For £95 a night and the fact that the room has a bath, I would had expected robes. We also found it difficult to sleep as the light from the landing lit our room up due to the old doors. The home made cake on arrival was a nice touch however. We are just abit disappointed as for nearly £100 a night in I would have expected a lot more than we got.

We booked the Rock Inn for a meal on the last night of our break and were not disappointed in any way. The pub/restaurant is just want you want when visiting Somerset in February; traditional cosy country with a large fire and great welcoming feel. The staff were friendly and helpful with plenty of knowledge on the food. There's also a good selection of local beers and ciders. The food was exceptional and faultless, including the kids food which is often a bit of an oversite. Pigeon paired with chorizo, super tender duck breast and fillet steaks cooked to perfection, excellent desserts and a very good cheese board of local produce. They also had a choice of dessert wines which were the perfect accompaniment to the cheeses. If we visit this area again, we wouldn't hesitate in booking for another round

We opted for the three courses each for a very reasonable £50. We both decided to go for the Brie cheese fondant for starters and it was absolutely spectacular, the best starter we'd both ever had! For the main course we went for the turkey roast dinner and that was equally as impressive as the starter! The Turkey so moist and tender, potatoes superb and all accompanied vegetables well cooked and fantastic!!! Handsome lashings of gravy to really bring it all to life!!!! To finish the meal I went for the toffee sticky pudding and my partner went for the caramel and chocolate ganache, my girlfriend was blown away and said it was the best dessert she'd ever eaten! This pub is tucked away and is well established. The landlady was grudgingly welcoming and went through all the motions, giving no sense of sincerity. I must say the chef (her husband) is very good, cooking up a wonderful steak and duck. The starters were pretty mediocre (deep fried brie with no bread for example) Over all we spent £100 for the two of us, not realising that over £10 of that was a service charge! Pretty steep given that we barely received any service just the bringing of plates and unscrewing a bottle of red! Too steep. We expect it in fine dining restaurants, however a country pub down a lane that had 6 people dining is a bit much. The tables were dirty, especially the legs, as were the windowsills etc. So, overall not great. What a shame... as the chef was working hard to produce the goods, but the rest let it down. We had 2 courses and a bottle of wine and were out in 55 minutes - that says it all!

This is and old Inn - no surprise but have stayed in worse - room and bed and bathroom cleanliness were 5 stars although the noises from the creaky floors were very obvious after bedtime. The stay was let down by the lack of hospitality - mine host was very dismissive and did not demonstrate any customer focus. Oh dear 1 star only. We arrived at about 6pm and were told we needed to sit down in the 'restaurant' straight away and order or we would not be served and would have to wait to the next time slot of 8.30. Breakfast the next day was weird only served between 9 and 9.30. At 9.25 we were asked if we wanted anything else to make that request straight away as the kitchen will be closing without exception at 9.30. Food and table service was fortunately 5 stars.

Perhaps this is a local place for local people. Booked a table for 6:30 arrived 6:20 greeted by "well you have 5 minutes to make your order". And stood waiting to take order. Starters were fine though 6 prawns for a prawn cocktail was less than expected. Steak was well cooked as was the fish though new potatoes were undercooked and other veg over cooked. Creme brulee was more like an egg custard. As regards price for food would say it was reasonable

On holiday in the area, myself and my family visited the Rock twice ,both times in the evening. Food choice was good ,plenty of choice but not overwhelming, for an AA 4 star rating prices were right, my only gripe would be the 10% service charge. The customer should be aware that this is added , having travelled extensively for many years I am firmly of the opinion that it should be the guests own choice whether they leave a tip if they have received good service/ good food putting a service charge on a bill removes the incentive for staff to give good service, although this should be a standard unfortunately it isn't. Having said that I would visit again if in the area whether for business or pleasure

Staying locally and visited this place on Saturday night. There is an A La Carte menu but some specials on a board as you come in. I saw the crab and salmon starter on here and also the monkfish and prawn Indonesian Curry and that was my choices made. Hubby had the cauliflower cheese bon bons with serano ham and the Beef in black treacle from the main menu. I have done beef in black treacle from one of Tom Kerridges recipies and its one of our favourites. Our order was taken promptly together with drinks requests. They arrived quickly but not that you felt you were being rushed. Both starters were very tasty. The mains didn't disappoint either. My monkfish curry was very flavoursome without being hot. Thai currys and Indonesian currys are made for their spicing and flavour not to blow your head off so I was pleased this was authentic. The beef was literally so tender you really didn't need a knife. He loved it. We also had a pud - rhubarb crumble and ice cream. Very light and just right to finish a lovely meal. Its not cheap but we came out thinking we had had value for money. Would rather pay a little more for something special than half this price for mediocre. The service was excellent. The only thing we both said was on the main course I could have done with a little more rice to soak up the sauce and a few more chips to go with the beef. Minor criticism. The tables were well spaced out. You felt very safe inside with the current situation. Thank you.

We chose The Rock because of its recommendation by Alister Sawday and trip advisor reviews. It certainly is a delightful Inn with charming rooms and a wonderful restaurant, Darrens' cooking is amazing. However, it was not until our arrival that we were informed, that Breakfast was served at 9.30am and the room was to be vacated by 10.30am. There was no bend on the matter so we asked if we could have a breakfast tray ( which must be a common occurrence ), a tray was begrudgingly supplied of just orange juice milk and a poor choice of cereals. When we had paid a Dinner Bed and Breakfast deal. We felt very short changed and wrote to the proprietors to say so. We have yet to receive a response. This is an area with Exmoor on its doorstep, where many customers must want to have an early start to make the most of their day. We left feeling very short changed.

Great food and attentive staff. Unfortunately an evening meal should be a relaxing and unrushed experience and this was far from it. Every course was rushed through to the point that as soon as plates were cleared the next course was served. We gave feedback but was told "This is the way we do things here". And there was me thinking it was all about the customer! It's a real shame because it was so close to being the perfect venue.

Eating out is not just about the food, but about the whole experience; the welcome and the way you are spoken to as a customer, the ambience and the physical environment. I cannot fault the food; it was excellent! What did spoil our experience was the attitude of the woman who "greeted" us as we entered. I assume she was the proprietor because of her imperious manner. My husband was berated as soon as he'd stepped over the threshold for not wearing a face mask. Fair enough, but in his defence we don't go out much just at the moment!! But it was the manner in which this rebuke was delivered. We were ordered to sit at a reception table until someone came to take our contact details. Once these details were taken I asked if we could move tables as we were perched uncomfortably on what was once a narrow church pew and too high for us to easily eat at the table. Basically I was told that we should stay were we were as it was indeed an available table, even though I could see others were free. Stupidly, I felt too intimidated to protest, so unused am I to being treated in such a high-handed manner. We were only there for lunch fortunately; I could not have endured the discomfort for much longer. What a shame. Our dining experience could have been so much better. Maybe a course in Customer Service wouldn't go amiss? Congratulations to the chef though,

We went here twice while spending a week in a local lodge. Staff friendly and very welcoming. Was very clean and covid safe. The drinks were nice but the food was even better. Definitely recommend the Sunday roast.

We stayed and dined and were thoroughly impressed with everything. The owners are super welcoming, our room was really comfortable with brilliant shower. The pub/restaurant had a great atmosphere with a lovely log burner and the menu on the blackboard with many options. We had the lamb rib to share and banoffee pie, the lamb carved at our table by the chef/owner felt special. Great attention to detail throughout. Great night’s sleep and a lovely breakfast - we’ll be back.

Lovely little pub off the beaten track. Booking advisable as quite small but still adhering to covid19 guidelines. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and served in a timely manner. We had the local duck which I would recommend.

Bar the usual Covid regs we had a warm welcome from Ruth behind the bar.She explained the meals available on the blackboard.we had two dogs and sat at a fine marble table with our two friends.I nearly had a starter, they were very tempting, Wood pigeon breast or half pint of fresh prawns. We went straight for the mains, blades of fie beefs and a super tender tasty veal chop. The Rossti and spinach pile was delicious.Note we had real linen napkins , none of your paper tissues. The service was fast yet everything was absolutely freshly cooked. This is one for a definite return!

We pre-booked a table for a early evening meal. On arrival we were shown to a table that in my opinion did not meet social distancing rules by any means. Adjacent tables were less than a metre apart. The waitress informed us that there were no menus due to covid 19 but we had to walk through the main dining area to view a chalk board menu within close proximity of other diners. In my opinion this pub is vastly over priced and the food is mediocre.

We had a really good meal here, including cauliflower bonbons, baked brie, duck, steak, strawberry shortcake and sticky toffee pudding, all excellent and with good service too. We thought it very good value as well and would eat here again if in the area in the future.Under current Covid restrictions, booking in advance for an evening meal is a must, I would say, as this restaurant seems popular with residents, locals and tourists alike.

We stayed at the Exmoor Gate Lodges and our hosts recommended this places to us. It was perfect in walking distance and we certainly were not disappointed. The menu had lots if choice and a real variety of options. I opted for the Duck and I was not disappointed. The location is very quiet and it was lovely to be sat by the window. I felt very safe and they had lots of precautions in place.

I cannot recommend The Rock Inn enough, from first point of contact to leaving after our meal everything was faultless. Upon booking there was a fantastic and friendly customer service attitude that eminated. Upon arriving there was hand gel provided outside, staff were wearing visors and face masks. Service was very quick, attentive and personable. I ordered the brie fondant and it was so delicious, usually I never touch a salad garnish but this was presented so stunningly and drizzled with delicious oils and dressings, the grilled peppers were also the perfect addition. My partner had the whitebait and was also very pleased. For our mains we both chose the featherblade beef, absolutely stunning! The sauce was thick and rich, the meat was so tender you could have easily cut it with a spoon. It was accompanied with mustard mash which was also delicious. For pudding, I was so full, but I saw my favourite creme brulé on the menu and I couldn't resist. The presentation was beautiful with such attention to detail (sorry I forgot to take a photo before I started eating). Food was well priced for the quality, £17 for most mains and £7 for starters and puddings. Wait on food was virtually non-existant (in a good way, everything was very fresh). Beautiful surroundings! This is definitely going to be our new special place to eat for every occasion! Thank you all for a much deserved lovely meal out for a chef on his (extremely) rare Friday afternoon off! We hope to see you again soon.

Where else on a balmy summers night would you go for supper other than here. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The fillet steak melted in our mouths and the shortbread pudding was a great finale to a lovely evening. We sat outside amongst the wonderful collection of plants. The outdoor atmosphere is lovely and the staff very efficient.

This place never disappoints when it comes to food. Their smoked haddock soufflé is delicious and full of flavor and the wagyu beef burgers are perfection. We love this place and always bring our friends. We try to come up with an excuse to go, such as “it’s a Thursday” let’s got to The Rock Inn.

The starter of cheese & smoked haddock soufflé was a disappointment (no flavour) but the main courses of steak & beef were fabulous. The lighting is very bright and there’s no background music, which it really needed, so there was a lack of ambience. Staff were friendly & efficient.

Just finished our 3rd, one-week stay at The Rock. This 450+ year old pub has become our home away from home in the West Country of England. Ruth and Darin are excellent hosts. The rooms are quite comfortable and the food and drink are excellent. (Highly recommend saving room for the homemade ice cream). Already counting the days to returning to The Rock in 2020.

We didn't stay here. We came for dinner from our holiday cottage about 30 mins drive (winding, hilly roads - classic Somerset) A lovely welcome from our hostess Ruth, 'Hello. The Whelans?'(Big smile) Nice table. We had an early booking (7.15) so I was a little surprised that a couple of dishes had already run out - probably a big lunch place - but that is the only complaint. The food was superb. My wife I have eaten in some very good places, and for me the cooking here is up there with the best and better than many. This is star food at jobbing actor prices. Three of us had the duck main course, which was like an Autumn woodland on a plate, smoky flavours (oyster mushrooms, caramelised broccoli, truffled dauphinoise) and succulent, perfectly cooked duck. In fact it's one of the best cooked, inventive duck dishes I have eaten, possibly the best. My youngest had the sweet potato gnocchi - she loved it. My starter, wood pigeon, also heavenly, with some piquant surprises not even mentioned in the description. Our eldest is Gluten intolerant and there wasn't a huge choice for her but the team were very helpful (if a little ill informed about chocolate mousse). The wine list is good and very reasonably priced. The Rock Inn offers great quality at a very fair price and we would all go back like a shot - including my teenage daughters who loved the place - in fact, I think we may well go back next year. Thanks to the Barclays. A delight.

We went here for a spur of the moment night away. The inn with rooms was what I was expecting and the general feel of the place was good with nice decor. Our room was an attic room and due to the age of the building the floor was very uneven which In turn meant the bed was sloping downwards at the head end quite significantly which wasn’t a nice feeling when led down. We ended up sleeping the other way round with our heads at the foot end. As leaving my partner mentioned this to the manager/owner who as expected replied with the reason being these old buildings etc...my partner explained it could be easily rectified by adding blocks to the bed on the lower end, he’s a carpenter but she was very uninterested and I doubt very much this will be put right but should be as it would not encourage us to return again even though it was generally very good.

Great pub, great food and great service and really like the decor too. Food was so good and fresh. It was quiz night the night we went and it was a great atmosphere. Like being in someone's front room. We joined in the quiz although we are not quizzers but made to feel part of it thanks to the quiz master. Don't know her name but she was great. Had a fabulous evening. Thanks to all at the White Horse

We didn’t stay at the hotel but had Afternoon Tea there which this review is about! Poor service as waiters seem to have no idea how to serve. We were rushed to pay as they were finishing for the day. We were not offered what type of tea to have. One of us asked for topping up the water glass while the other two got ignored! They had no knowledge of the place either given it’s a building with some history! A refreshing conversation was with the gardener who has good knowledge of the place, but unfortunately it was too late.
