I ordered gammon steak with chunky chips, pineapple, egg and peas, my partner ordered burger and chunky chips. Chips were not chunky and were over cooked and greasy, gammon was tough and greasy, no peas and burger was greasy. We both felt nauseous all evening! Would definitely not eat there again or recommend !!

Dont waste your time.... Rude and unhelpful staff. Walked over as thought what a gorgeous setting overlooking the sea. Went inside and found 2 members of staff chatting. BOTH knew i was there and ignored me so i had to listen to when one lady was starting her maternity leave... It was 5 pm and i asked if they were serving food and she informed me not until 6pm. So we went for a walk and came back at 6.45pm and asked a different member of staff for a menu. He informed us that they stopped serving 15 minutes ago???? So a window of 30 minutes to order food. Is this normal here or was o just misinformed... We bought drinks sat outside and enjoyed the scenery. We watched as food was bought out to other tables and was shocked to see the man bringing out food holding the plates with a towel and then as he walked away wiping away sweat from his head with same towel. This happened a-lot over the next 15 minutes as he was the person running around serving food. We avoided here for the rest of the week but my husband fancied a pint overlooking the sea after walking the dog so he tried again.. Surprise, surprise he walked out after 15 minutes of queuing as the 2 staff behind the bar were chatting and trying to work the till. Such a shame as could be so nice

Incredibly rude staff. We wanted to have a cream tea and enquired within. The bar was empty ,the waitress behind the bar knew we were there but completely ignored us, continuing her conversation with the other waitress, then told us she was waiting for another customer to get back to her. We asked if cream teas were available - she didn't know. The other waitress went to check and shouted back scones were, not offering any other info - price etc, and then continued with her cleaning. I went to ask for more detail but was shrugged off. We left - thinking our custom and money would be appreciated elsewhere - which it was. Such a shame to be put off before the first mouthful. Won't be returning

What a great find, in a lovely location with stunning scenery. Stopped off for a spot of lunch and from the minute we entered the bar we knew it was a good find. Such a friendly welcome. Very average food, veg were on the menu for additional charges from £3 to £5. Dessert menu very limited. Dining room was very cold there was a breeze blowing through felt so uncomfortable to stay for long. Staff were attentive enough but but slightly scruffy the waiter should have checked his appearance before he started work as some of the buttons on his shirt weren't done up. Would I eat here again I don't think so.

Went for dinner one night at the Rock House, while staying in Lynmouth. There was not a huge choice on the menu, but we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I chose from the specials menu - hake with lemon and samphire, hubby had steak. The hake was beautiful - everything tasted really fresh and the fish was perfectly cooked. Hubby's steak was nice, he said. Finished the meal with the nicest sticky toffee pudding I've ever had. Atmosphere is relaxed, but still 'restauranty' enough for us. Could hear someone in the kitchen singing at the top of their voice at points, but all added to the enjoyment of the meal for us 😅 Staff were friendly and helpful.

We were in Lynmouth for one night, the last night of our short motorcycle tour. Our room (no 6) was lovely, double aspect, one window overlooking the pebble beach out to sea and the coastline and the other over the garden and up the river and valley beyond, which is a lovely walk. Really large comfortable bed and nicely decorated. The shower room was very nice but could do with a towel rail, or some more hooks or a shelf or some wear to put a wash bag. Breakfast was superb, lots to choose from, and beautifully presented.

Ordering process was fine. Money is taken before you eat. Down hill straightaway. The salt and pepper squid was fine. After about 20mins after we finished the squid the plate was taken away. We noticed they finishing serving food at 14:30, which is strange for a resteraunt, no where outside does it state restricted hours. Eventually after a long wait mains were served I.e. 2 fish and chips???? I questioned where my chicken caesar salad, and was curtly told had ordered 2 fish and chips. At the time I ordered I was asked if I wanted the salad at the same time as the plate of fish and chips. The same person delivered the meals but forgot that conversation and made out I was 2 senile to know what I had ordered and did not go to check. I believe as the kitchen was closing they served what ever was left and didnt want to make a caesar salad. I note from previous comments the staff have a total lack of service protocol, perhaps that why reviews have no response. I will be sending a review to North Devon and Lynton & Lynmouth tourist bodies as I think this establishment reflects badly on the community. £48.65 for salt&pepper squid, 2 fish & chips (not what I ordered) pint of badger butter and 1 pot of tea and bad service, is poor value for money. Note the fish was like huss (rock salmon) and I meal was cold. please see my previous reviews to see I am not winger!

Best spot in Lynmouth for food. High quality ingredients and cooked to order from a menu that's interesting and not just burger and chips. Waitress worked hard and didn't stop all evening - contrast to the local lady who was behind the bar and struggled to move herself more than 2 metres and couldn't quite summon up the effort to smile - note to the new management "she needs to go because she's doing you no favours". Otherwise great experience.

After a wonderful day in Lynmouth we decided to eat at the Rock House Lovely setting , friendly welcome and a varied menu. My partner went for the veggie katsu curry which was nice enough if not a little under seasoned for her taste. I had the the Salt Bass which is where it all went a little down hill .. 50% of the mussels were off , the crayfish was nothing but very small chunks and the fillet was so over cocked . Everyone has an off day but at no time did anyone ask how our meal was and when we did eventually catch someone’s eye the response was ‘oh well, we will let the chef know ‘ then cleared the plates and presented the bill. So in summary , overpriced, below par ingredients poorly cooked and served by staff who don’t really care.

We have visited this restaurant for lunch 3 times in 10 days in May / June 2023. The location alone sets it apart, the outdoor tables are welcoming, not too close together, and you're right next to the beach. The service was also consistently very friendly, even when it was busy. The fish and chips here are better than at other local spots, and they also come with a side of spicy peas. Of course, there is not a huge selection of dishes here, but there is enough variety. Also very suitable for children. For us it was our favorite place to eat in Lynmouth.

This review is only about the rock house bar and restaurant, not the hotel. Went over to get a drink at 7.40 on a Sunday, board outside and the website stated they were open until 8. We were greeted by a young member of staff (I know he was a staff member as he had served us the day before) who was mostly likely drunk, or at least on his way, judging from the can of carlsberg he was swigging from. He rudely told us they were shut and that we should try there sister pub over the bridge. We decided not too, a poor reflection on both establishments. This used to be one of the gems in the village, sadly not any more

We have been here before, albeit a few years ago, and thought it would be a good place to have lunch on a trip to Lynmouth last week. We chose a table in the garden and my fiance collected a menu. Disappointingly, there was only one vegetarian option on the menu, a pea & mint ravioli, and so Chris went back in to enquire if there were any other options available. He said that the lady seemed quite surprised to be asked, exclaiming that they were a fish restaurant, even though there is no mention of this on the building exterior, and they include burgers on the menu. She did however confirm that yes, this was the only option, and that it was definitely suitable for vegetarians. We decided to order this, along with fish & chips for Chris, a coke and a flat white coffee. In the meantime, we were provided with a fresh bowl of water and complementary bonio for our dog, which was really appreciated. My coffee was definitely not a flat white, more a very weak americano with a bit of froth on the top. Our food arrived fairly quickly and looked fantastic! Sadly, the huge portion of fish turned out to be mostly batter, and my vegetarian ravioli had pieces of non vegetarian parmesan which I picked off and fed to our dog. This is not the standard we expect from any pub or restaurant, especially one charging the high prices of the Rock House. The attitude of the lady inside was appalling, and after we specifically asked about the vegetarian options, to be served parmesan is unacceptable. Admittedly, we probably should have taken issue at the time, but we were on holiday and trying to have the best possible time. The only redeeming factors for this establishment were the two lads who independently offered the dog water and biscuit and were extremely polite and courteous throughout, and the fact that the ravioli itself was really very nice! I'm not entirely sure what's going on with this place at the moment - they do have a perfect location, but in order to charge the prices they do, this has to matched by the quality of the food and service. If they are aiming to be an upmarket fish restaurant, then at least market themselves as such, and make this clear on the exterior building. And most importantly, please educate, inform and train the staff on the importance of food diets, allergies & intolerances, and customer care.

Nice pub, with great beer garden, let down by poor service. Waited over 30 mins for 2 baguettes, it didn't seem very busy and numerous people who sat down after us received meals before us. When questioned, the manager politely informed us that 'you'll always have a wait in a holiday resort'. Children's sandwich was £3 for 2 slices of white bread and some grated cheese. Considering this is half the price of a baguette which was loaded came with a side salad, this just seemed like profiteering to me.

I found out by paying a complement to one of the waitresses for the marvellous breakfast that the owners name is Tony and he very often cooks the breakfasts I will tell you what he cooks the best free hand poach eggs in the business they are just perfect every time, I unfortunately have never been able to get one right in my life. The rooms we have stayed in have been the kings suite a double room which was very clean and spacious with excellent sea and river views The other room was room 4 a double room again as above but with excellent river views , if you stay at this hotel and you are not happy with the hospitality, cleanliness and service it provides then I would stay at home because nowhere we meet your expectations.

First visit to Lynmouth. Chose this restaurant because of its waterfront location. Unfortunately the service did not live up to the view. First we were told in no uncertain terms that we would have to be quick if we wanted food as they were about to stop taking orders. This was mid-afternoon! They actually had the cheek to give us a time limit of 5 minutes to order. Then they tried to overcharge us and only reluctantly reduced the bill to the proper amount. Staff were abrupt, surly and disinterested. Please give the Rock House a wide berth. There must be better places to eat in Lynmouth than this place, where your custom will be appreciated.

Fish so greasy, over cooked, and with alot of bones, my husband couldn't eat it. Was expecting chips on a plate rather then a baking tray.Getting the attention of the waiting staff took a very long time. When I went in to pay it was as if I had done something wrong. It was just after 3 on bank holiday Monday afternoon. My fiancée queued while I found a table in the garden. After around 10 minutes, she got to the front of the queue, only to be told bluntly that "they had stopped serving food, as it was nearly 4.30" There was no signage to indicate that food stopped at that time and it was 3.10! Other people in the queue behind her also queried it but to no avail. We won't bother trying again in the future.

Went for dinner at The RockHotel having been twice super impressed by food and service at their sister hotel,The Rising Sun.Unfortunately , this was a totally different and unpleasant experience. The manager was aggressive , unhelpful and at one point raised his voice to us when we questioned why he was unable to split our bill into two separate ones . In addition the Rose’ we ordered was not cold and when this was questioned he again became unpleasant ,told us the Rose’ was from the fridge and made us feel that we were lying . The four of us are quite aware what constitutes a chilled Rose’ and this was definitely not chilled but warm. We decided not to proceed with ordering food due to unpleasant way we were treated . We told the manager we would not be ordering food and that we were willing to pay for the wine but he told us we would not have to pay . Whilst we appreciate this gesture , it was a very unpleasant and upsetting experience. We almost felt hounded out of the restaurant by the manager and waitress. The ale the miserable chap served was the dregs from the bottom of the barrell, thick with bits and cloudy, that with the cant be arsed attitude we left and went somewhere else for lunch. Note to the owners, have some pride in what you are doing, having only one ale on offer and serving muck that's left at the bottom is a poor attempt, and get your staff to cheer up or go home ..

Had the Sunday roast - lovely meal - food excellent - great choice/selection. The home made desert - to 'die for'!!!!Service really good/excellent - friendly & helpful. The location is so nice & peaceful. It is VERY noticable since the change of ownership (2018) that the standard of hygene & overall 'ambience' has improved beyond recognition - very, VERY well done!!!Highly recommended & worth a visit - you will love it!!

Popped in for fish & chips because the harbourside restaurants were all closed. £14-00 for fish & chips seemed steep, but we decided to chance it in case it was fabulous. Very disappointed. Small, thin, obviously machine-processed fillets - like a large battered fish finger - served in a harbourside restaurant for goodness sake! I’ve had far better in Wetherspoons for far less money. Won’t be back any time soon, I’m afraid.

We stopped for lunch here and sat in the garden which was nice. When we went in to order the waitress was rude and unhelpful, I asked for a slight change to our order she refused! The food was nice when it came but unfortunately due to the service We will definitely not be back!

Yes this pace has had some terrible reviews , and justifiably . We were told by the locals that the previous owner had suffered a sad personal loss and taken to the bottle .

That's what this has going for it.we attended bar for drinks and snacks on 2 occasions. Only went back as great beer garden. 1St time awful service, mismatched cups and plates which were also totally out of character with bar area and internal seating area. Dated decor. Guy decided to vacuum while we were eating, ignored the phone when it rang and wasn't even friendly. All seemed an effort.

On a recent trip to the area ad with the raining falling, we chose this lace for lunch, seven in our group including two children. The staff were very accommodating moving table etc, menu was limited but offers enough for all and was hot, well presented and edible. The place was busy, two staff only but they didi a wonderful job, not too sure about the previous reviews but this place is worth a visit and sure it will achieve much better results - but service fantastic.

My family and I came here in a lovely summer day to have some cream tea. When we went inside to order, the barman was serving two other people. He was slow and seemed he did not know what he was doing, Just running around. After us a few people joined the queue but after 10 minutes waiting some couples left. Barman seemed from a comedy sketch as he was spitting things everywhere. We finally ordered and paid. We were given very dirty cups and plates and the cream teas were microwaved, seemed to have a funny texture and were very hot. We complained about this and asked for a refund, which the bairman gave us after saying that we were nit picking (because we wanted clean cutlery). Wish we had read the reviews before going there. We then went down the road where we had nice food and service was great.

It was a bitter cold morning, even the cliff railway was closed because of the freezing weather. We crossed the bridge and even though the sign said they were open it appeared closed, curtains were mostly drawn, as we approached the door the dog seemed pleased to see us. We went in and ordered three coffees, which were okay. There were beer glasses on the table from the night before and the floor needed cleaning. They have a lovely looking garden, I imagine it clashes be nice in summer months.

Looks lovely from the outside, but sadly it was not good. Had lunch there, the Guinness was good, but the food, a fish and chips and a burger and chips were poor to be polite. To make things worse, the track-suited person who brought the food out had just been in the toilet lock-up, the same time I was in the loo. He DID NOT WASH his hands before leaving. I was very unsure weather to eat the food after that. As it was the fish had a nasty aftertaste.

Should have checked the other reviews. Stopped here for lunch as on first appearances looked quaint, it was thatched with hanging baskets and already quite a few people sat in the garden outside. As it was a lovely day and we had our dogs we joined them, wish we hadn't. We ordered fish and chips, it came out a few chips on the plate (which appeared to be bagged oven chips), batter with fish and some tinned garden peas.

Firstly, chef in full whites smoking a cigarette next to bar entrance, smell wafting into room, asked for a lunch time menu, after looking for one and having a giggle with his co worker found one next to his arm. asked for another for my friend, same reaction. poor menu choice, but decided to give it a go. when ordered he asked for table number because he couldn't order without it, ONE person sitting inside, and we were going outside, so I had to walk out a look at the table I was pointing at. my friend ordered drink and food, and asked to pay, the reaction was 'oh i thought you would pay together' she said no, we are paying separate. seam to cause a little confusion with him. as i was ordering his co worker came in and commented that how funny were went paying together and another little sniggle. he took my friends order out and then came back for mine. our meals were served about 2 minutes apart, STILL ONLY US IN THE WHOLE PLACE. my friends chips were burnt and fried eggs solid (dog enjoyed the ham) the toast with my pate was hardly toast more bread and not really nice with a not very nice pate. Beer was nice and cold.(when leaving and waiting for my fried to go to the toilet, another couple came in and asked for a menu, the same charade happened to them), when leaving chef 'still in full whites' sitting out side hotel entrance with another co worker smoking and laughing like they had a few too many, very loud and somewhat a little worrying, thinking i was the but of the joke like spitting in food or the way i walked. etc.

My 17 month old son has severe allergies....I requested information on food so we could have lunch. The so called chef came out to speak to us....he said he refuses to cater for fad diets. I was really annoyed. Allergies are NOT fad diets. This man should educate himself. He seemed drunk. Would never eat or stay there after that.

We went for a drink last night. The bar man was inebriated but we got our drinks. We thought we would go there for dinner tonight. Arrived and bar man was at the desk with his head in his hands. He did not even greet us. We asked for a table for two. No one else was there. An employee asked the bar man if anyone else had booked. He said 'no'. We re told that a table would be laid for us. We were eventually told to wait in the lounge and then some cutlery andserviettes were brought to us in the bar. None of it boded well and so we left. It appears that bar man/? Owner has a problem and there is no leadership. I feel sorry for the staff. This hotel will not survive with the present leadership.

Eventually someone came out swearing about something that had gone wrong ,and I mean swearing, only a couple more people sat there we did get our coffee ,but while we were there ,there must have been 10 couples walk around and all walked away again, this place is in a prime spot in Lynmouth, such a shame as it could be fantastic there,I would not recommend this place at all, unless we called in on a very bad day in the office!!

After walking from Porlock Weir on the coast path, 12 miles we had decided we would reward ourselves with a cream tea. We found a table in the garden and I went in to order. The bar man wasn't very friendly and I asked for a cream tea and a Roobis tea, he gave me the teas and said the cream tea would follow. My husband and I drank the tea, which both had a very bad after taste and waited, and waited, in the mean time the bar man had a vap outside chatted with his friend and then came out with a cup of tea. So 25 minutes later I went in and said we didn't want the cream tea now and that the teas had a nasty taste. His reply was he had forgotten there was no one in the kitchen and forgotten we had ordered it.I got my money back, only for the cream tea with no apology. I believe I should have had a full refund a a sorry would have been good. We are locals and will never go back again. so disappointed with the service.

We went to Lynmouth last summer on a day out for our beloved dog!! What a beautiful village in all its like a time capsule. After the dog road the cliff railway and had an extensive walk he fancied a drink and the Rock looked nice. A very friendly receptionist welcomed us abs showed us to the lovely beer garden with a bar through French doors a couple of real ales tried by myself and a wine for the wife and even a bowl of water for the dog. The meuse was perused and it looked great. Being about 5.30 we plumped for a ploughman's and a sandwich. Which were lovely well presented and reasonably priced. "We must come back here again" and we did last Sunday. We got to this lovely village this time by the steps walked the dog and ate a wonderful Sunday lunch in that same beer garden as it was so unusually warm the the bar was dog friendly. Two lovely meals came out and were well portioned and appointed. Not enough room for a sweet although they looked great. It's a must visit place if for a drink, a snack or a meal all will be served with a smile. We are definitely going back in the spring, the dog said so!!!

Crap, manager standing at tables giving away shots to girls while doing nothing while the staff work their arses off. Seen it a few times now, seen managers make staff cry, the way they talk to their staff is gross, needs looking at seriously. Go to the panniers, new management and way better
