Four of us meet here for lunch every couple of months. We previously frequented the Marston chain but found the service appalling - what a refreshing change to come to the Rock where we were warmly greeted by the landlord and the staff are friendly. We usually have the Lunch Special which includes a main, a dessert and a soft drink or glass of wine for under £14. As the sign says 'this is an old fashioned pub' - it is a traditional pub with good old fashioned service and manners.

Visited on a Friday evening with friends, had 6 two course meals in total. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food and we all thought it was good value. Chips were homemade and delicious. Goulash was full of tender beef. Would definitely return. Only gripe was that they did not sell alcohol free lager. Staff were very helpful and pleasant.

Went here for a meal with my husband. I had the duck in blackcurrant and honey sauce with sautee potatoes and hubby had the salmon. We were served promptly and only a short wait for food which was cooked beautifully and was piping hot. The staff were helpful and friendly and checked to make sure their customers were happy and food to satisfaction. The chocolate cheesecake is amazing...I will definately be re-visiting in the future.

Five of us had a very pleasant Saturday lunch at the Rock yesterday. Immediately the staff made us feel welcome and the lovely chap behind the bar was helpful when we were choosing our drinks. The restaurant area was bright and pleasant and the menu was varied and interesting. I had the Caribbean chicken and chocolate cheesecake for dessert. The food was really tasty, we all cleared our plates and the service was friendly. Toilets were clean and pleasant to use. I would definitely return.

We visited this pub for a lunch. The welcome was lovely and all the staff so attentive. We were seated in the welcoming dining room, it was light and airy. We had the choice of the lunch or dinner menus and chose scampi and chips and a mushroom risotto. The food came piping hot. The chips were homemade and the risotto was soft and full of mushrooms with a rich wine taste. Coffee was lovely too. We will definitely return. Good food attentive service and spotlessly clean.

Unpretentious, welcoming and comfortable pub. Very good value for money. The food was tasty and plentiful. We visited for lunch and tried the corned beef pie and the faggots and peas. Definitely would go again and try some of the more exotic dishes. The duck in blackberry sauce sounds good. I had a glass of red wine which was very good indeed. You get used to some very indifferent wines when drinking by the glass, so this was a welcome surprise .Some nice little touches, like fresh flowers, handcream and tissues in the Ladies'.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

This is the first time i've ever taken the time to write a review but after last nights expericence I felt I had to. Its very unfortunate that I have to as this is not the first time we have visited The Rock for food and our other experiences have always been very pleasant and we've had lovely food on those occasions. Last night experience has left us feeling that we will never go back, usually I could forgive not very good food on some occasions as we've been places where the food has been average before and not complained but the reason why we could not forgive this occasion is becasue of the sheer Bad, belittling and intimidating attitude of the owner. When we arrived we were welcomed by the owner himself outside as he was chatting to regular customers. Once inside we were welcomed by a very over enthusiastic bar man who served us drinks and showed us to our table. We ordered our starters and Mains and I must say that the Starter came extremely promptly and were very nice. However when our mains came they looked very nice, My partner had a chicken dish and I ordered Gammon. Unfortunetely for me the gammon tasted of fat and oil and it was very tough to eat. The taste of the oil and fat was turning my stomach so much that I couldn't eat the rest of the dish and placed my plate to the side of the table. After around 5 minutes I noticed the Manageress asking the waitress to come and ask if everything was ok with our food and I explained that I couldn't eat it because I found that the Gammon was quite tough and it tasted of Fat and oil. She said she would take it away and didn't even offer me an alternative. After about 5 mins the Manager came out and at first went to the wrong table and shouted out 'Who's the lady that had the Gammon?'.....I responded it was me as he was on the table situated behind us. He then went on to say in a very bad attitude that he has tasted my Gammon and there was nothing at all wrong with it and that they sell loads of them. I explained that I was sorry but I didn't feel it tasted nice at all and it was tough and tasted on Fat and oil and he disagreed once again making a scene infront of people saying I was wrong. He did offer me an alternative but after his unacceptable attitude I would never have taken him up on the offer. Do these people honestly think that I would have left my food if it tasted nice?? Couples do not plan to spend an evening out together to then not eat their food, hence why my partner still ate his as his was actually quite nice. It was clear to see the attitude of all the staff change once we had complained, which like i've already stated I have never done before. When we went up to pay the bill, we weren't acknowledged for around five minutes while the not so over the top and cocky bar man now was talking to another customer about random nonsense and to the side of him stood the Manageress who completely ignored us with a face like a bull dog chewing a wasp. Once we paid the bill, less the Gammon, there wasn't even a smile or a thank you leave their lips. It was disgraceful!!!!!It's completely obvious to see that this place does not take critism easily hence why they don't reply to any of their reviews that have been left that are bad. To the Manager and Manageress off The Rock....Change your stinking attitudes and except that every once in a while a below par meal will go out into your restaurant and that the approach is to try and make the customer happier and not argue with them. Even Top Michelin Star restaurants have their bad day but I can guartee that they would never argue with their customers and that they would make sure it was put right.

Due to being a parent of children i will not be back, we stopped off for refreshment after walking along the sirhowy cycle path, on which this pub is located, might i add the only pub for many miles once you depart blackwood. However children are not welcome unless they are accompanied by adults, and all children and adults must order a main meal from the menu to stay. so no crisps and pop for the kids, and now every time we pass, my daughter points to the pub and says there is a nasty man in there, way to isolate the next generation of customer!

We had four meals and they were good - hot, reasonably generous amounts and nicely presented. However, I was surprised to find that the restaurant explicitly does not cater for any food allergies. I'm coeliac. The waitresses were not allowed to give advice and the chef could not be consulted. Oddly, too, the waitresses were not allowed to take drink orders, although another, possibly more senior employee helped us out.Not a bad experience, but an unusual one. Wouldn't go there again due to their attitude to allergies.

My daughter waited 40mins after we were sarvef for her meal and then had to wait longer as it was cooked well done and she had asked for rare to medium. To which she was told you ordered well done to which my daughter replied no I always have rare to medium. .when desserts came out well what a mess they were given to the wtong people mine was given to someone and then just plonked down in front of me with no spoon I asked if I could have a spoon as my dessert was now melting into a puddle and was told I gave a spoon to the other person for that dessert she came back and slammed the spoon down ..I would have made a fuss but didnt want to upset my aunt as it was her 70th birthday party.my experience was not a nice one and I payed 22 pounds to be treated unkindly and unfairly.

Took family here for lunch. It was a set 2 or 3 courses. Two members of the group were elderly and disabled. One of them was unable to eat main meal so just ordered starter and dessert. The waitress must have told landlord who then proceeded to come to the table in a very unfriendly manner and in a loud voice practically accused us of trying to fiddle the cost of the meals. We assured him this was not the case as we were paying for the 2 courses. My elderly relative who is 88 became most upset about this as most of the guests in the pub heard what he said. After reading the other review regarding arrogant landlord it seems he does not want disabled guests at his premises. I would not recommend anyone to go there.

It was my Birthday and thought it would be nice to go for food in a local restaurant. What a mistake that was. I was horrified with not only the food being sub satisfactory for such prices but the attitude of the manager was absolutely shocking. It began with most of the group wanting Duck from the menu but there was none available. Then i decided to have the Garlic Mushrooms that had no garlic in it! We then had the Sirloin Steak and Three Counties chicken. The steak was over cooked and very tough which was very disappointing for the £17.95 price tag! The chicken was very very dry and very tasteless. On asking for the bill we thought we would give some feedback on the food to improve their service for the future. The waitress then went to get the Manager. I obviously explained that we were disappointed. He then became very defensive and said that he would scrap the bill but we were no longer welcome at the rock. Which we were astonished by. Terrible Food, Terrible management. They are lucky to get 1/5 on the ratings.

If you know where it is it's easy to find! However if you don't it isn't. If you come out of Blackwood towards Tredegar its just past the Charetris bridge on the left. If you come the other way its just before the bridge on the right. It's right on the road with the car park behind. The food menu is extensive and the lunch time offer of two meals for £10 excellent value when you see the size of the portions. Very popular when we visited so a reservation might be in order. The accommodation looks good as well.
