We had a lovely lunch at the River Room- the surroundings were relaxed but luxurious and the staff were impeccable. The food was of a very high standard with generous portions. Thanks to everyone for their professional and warm service.

Lunch from the set menu was sadly disappointing. The staff stood around chatting, so after waiting for twenty minutes we asked someone to take our order. Apparently the conversation was riveting, as it took them another five minutes to come over. The set menu is very average food, with small portions, and side orders are needed if you'd like to see a vegetable. We had two glasses of indifferent wine (£15 for a small glass) and were given bottled water (asked for tap) at £6.50 a bottle. There's no bread offered, and no finesse with the service, which given that an automatic 15 percent is added to the bill is disappointing. It seems that The Savoy is trading on past glories, and presumably thinks this is 'good enough ' for the many tourists that come in wearing t-shirts and trainers

We spent our wedding night at the Savoy 39 years ago. When we visit London, we typically stay at a club but will often return to the Savoy for lunch or dinner. For this trip we decided to visit for breakfast and as the web page had no provision to reserve for breakfast I emailed over a month in advance. The reply I received stated that reservations are not accepted but that we could just turn up, and at worst there would be a short wait. I called a week in advance of the desired date and was told the same thing. On turning up at 9:00 we saw a restaurant at around 10% of capacity but were told that due to their being very busy they were accepting only hotel guests. Fortunately, when I kept pressing what I had previously been told, the employee consulted her supervisor who was far more understanding and we were given a table. During our 80 minute stay the restaurant never exceeded at the very most 25% of capacity.

Never that sure about a Ramsey managed restaurant, but ! What a superb venue , super staff, beautiful decor, friendly and very professional service. The food was first rate from the starters through to the moist delightful turkey and stunning deserts . Six or was it seven courses and we spent four hours here taking in all the sights although the restaurant was only 70% full. Wines are pricey as is the food . But you pay for what you get ! Stylish, luxurious and a special treat .

I always have a degree of trepidation going to a restaurant just after it has opened. But when Gordon Ramsay is at the helm the signs are good. The layout is pleasing and staff do their utmost to please. Fish and seafood dominate the menu so we went down this route for starters and mains. All delicious as was the chilled White Burgundy we washed them down with. Decadent desserts accompanied by a glass of Sauternes. All in the sumptuous surroundings of the Savoy. All in all a delightful treat at a time when we all need to indulge ourselves.

Such an elegant place to enjoy a meal! As my husband was at a business dinner and we planned to meet later, I dined alone. However I felt incredibly welcome and comfortable. Great service, excellent food and wines. Highly recommended!

For those of us who recall the River Room and the S\avoy Grill in its former glory this is a very different experience. Dress code ? Forget it. Perhaps not hoodies, but jeans, T-shirts, leggings, and leather jackets confirmed the North American had brought about changes, not all for the better to a once great British institution. ; but then we now cater for tourists as well as businessmen, and the captains of industry go elswhere. Staff were young and welcoming, Guiseppe our waiter was excellent and particularly helpful with our ten year old guest whose first experience of a Grand Hotel, but not of fine dining, this was. Perhaps the production of a childrens menu (wisely declined by our savvy guest) was the giveaway. The set menu which we all chose was enjoyable good value, but no amuse bouches and overall there was a sense of something lacking. I doubt if we will want to return with or without an eleven year old guest, !

We were stuck on where to go for a decent Lunch and had not ventured through the hallowed doors of the Savoy since its refurbishment, and would I pass the old fashioned dress code? "Jacket and Tie,Sir" We certainly weren't turned away in smart trousers and shirt and a table was quickly found when the receptionist found we had not reserved.. On the plus side the refurbished room was bright, and not over bearing. Tables for once were nicely spaced and laid with minimal clutter and initial drinks service was quick..then it all went down hill. Bread arrived warm and fresh but no butter!! we asked and then got Salted butter "do you have unsalted butter?" "Sure" a further wait..eventually a lump of butter arrived and we were told "so sorry for the delay, we had to send somebody to the shop to get it"...any chance of some fresh warm bread " that will be another 10 mins, Sir". Starters came and went, not very inspiring and maybe they had gone out to buy the smoked salmon form the local shop aswell. Main courses were only a little better, plates were cold and the actually dishes just warm. Service seemed a little chaotic, and we were expecting our mian dishes to be announced (our staters were) but they were literally plonked on the table. "Can I have some mustard?" "sure" they must of found there was no mustard in the local shop, because the mustard never arrived. The wine list is impressive and there are plenty of reasonable priced wines, we picked a beautiful Sancerre that didn't break the bank. Although request a wine bucket on the table otherwise you will remain thirsty!! We took coffee in the grand lounge which was the best part of the lunch. Although inexpensive, we will certainly be having lunch elsewhere next time.

I had breakfast here whilst visiting relatives staying in the hotel. The service was friendly, but not as attentive as I would expect, having to gesture to attract attention more than once. The food was good quality but not outstanding and away from a window table, the atmosphere was nothing special. I was really looking forward to eating here, but post renovation it felt just too AMerican and anonymous in this restaurant. I did not get the feeling of being somewhere special like the Savoy. You still get this feeling as you enter from the Strand, but I sadly felt the place had something missing on this visit. A lot of money has been spent on renovations, but I'm not sure it has had the right result. The costs of the breakfast was high as expected, but the food and atmosphere were did not reflect this.

First time back to the River Room since the refurbishment, and the food is still superb. However, the North American influence is obvious from the trendy decor to the casual staff and-this may appear very old fashioned-the fact that the guests were dressed in jeans and t-shirts made me feel that one of the great british institutions had been forced in the modern age. The sevice was slow although the staff were were nice, and every course was presented in an excellent manner and was first class fare. At £100 a head this is probably not somewhere where I will return as there are many better top class establishments which offer the whole package for the discerning diner.

The service and atmosphere were truly outstanding. We had the pre-theatre 2 course menu. Super and tasty monkfish and other choice was braised rabbit leg - also good. Dessert was salted caramel ganache or an interesting risotto made with pudding rice and chocolate cream beneath. It really was very memorable.

Since the Savoy re-opened last year, we have eaten at the River Room three times, twice after the theatre and this time at lunch on a Saturday. Sadly, on both late evening visits, the Restaurant was almost deserted when we arrived at 1030, but on the third visit at lunchtime, it was full, and the transformation was dramatic. The lounge, too, was full, with several couples and family groups enjoying tea and cakes at 1.30pm which seemed odd, but the atmosphere was buzzing and quite like the old days. It's an old adage that restaurant service is always better when the place is busy, and this was amply proved by the charming restaurant team who this time struck an excellent balance between formality and friendliness, between too much attention and not enough. Since the Omelette Arnold Bennett was invented at the Savoy, surely nowhere would it be done better - so we all four ordered one as a starter, and yes, and it was delicious, light, and a perfect combination of haddock and parmesan. For main courses, we all chose fish - three the Dover sole and one Cod, which were perfectly cooked, and very elegantly served. The mashed potato served with the Sole was delicious, light creamy and fluffy and presented in individual silver pots. In my lifetime the great London hotels have never been such celebrated gathering centres for the local people as are their counterparts in other great cities - Hong Kong, Paris or New York - but the River Restaraurant seems well on the way to becoming a hot lunch ticket, and on this performance, it certainly deserves to.
