We have just returned to our room after having a delicious meal at The River Restaurant. Our server, Amanda, was attentive, friendly, unobtrusive and professional throughout - a a real credit to The Lowry. Each course of our meal was perfectly timed with no fee lining if being hurried along, the food was beautifully presented, perfect temperature and most enjoyable. Thank you to Amanda everyone who helped to make our evening really special 💓

Champagne Afternoon tea. Very disappointed. Lack litre afternoon tea, sandwiches poor , hummus and pepper, a dry lump of French bread with salmon a chicken wrap and a cold cheese tart. Cakes were ok, service was non existent. Half of the teas on menu not available and could only really offer breakfast tea. Coffee was out of a machine as certainly not fresh brewed, another table of ladies were saying the same. For the Lowery hotel this was poor and I expected more. And to top it off we were seated in the back of the restaurant behind a partition screen so couldn’t see out of the river view windows and the service was disappointingly poor. I wonder if all the voucher experience are seated at the back as the waiter knew we had a voucher despite us not telling him. Well our voucher was still £80 and value was poor. I won’t be returning.

Not the best afternoon tea, should have more savoury choices as most were vegetarian choices apart from the half tikka wrap too many cakes. We have eaten better afternoon tea at a less priced hotel.

Service excellent. I think if you have a big appetite it maybe wasn’t enough . Found cakes a little bit sweet and sickly. I don’t like nuts in cakes which I didn’t expect. The mock tails were lovely. Took some cakes home and were inedible when we got home as the box was too big so they were jumping around 😂.

We booked for a small annual family get together after a recommendation from a local friend who frequents the hotel often and phoned ahead to confirm the menu (set menu offered on weekdays). On arrival (party of 4) we were shown to a table without even asking us our name (probably because the restaurant was virtually empty) and given al a carte menu's. This menu was the same as the set menu but seemed considerably more expensive so we queried it. After a lot of faffing around the head waiter said he needed to consult with the manager and took photos on his phone of the menu that was on the Opentable confirmation e mail, as if he'd never seen the menu before - this took ages and we felt like second class citizens. By the time the waiter came back we had already made our minds up but when he said they wouldn't do the set menu we got up and left and went and spent a whole lot of money in an Italian restaurant elsewhere where the service was exemplary, friendly, welcoming and surprise surprise, it was busy ! A few lessons this place could learn from ! We'll never be back and neither will the friend who recommended it.

Ok’ieh afternoon tea. Lovely cakes, not so great sandwiches. Service appalling! After being sat, it took 20 mins and me having to ask 3 different staff members for a wine menu, but apparently the people serving water or setting tables weren’t able to do this, only the girl on the front desk (who incidentally was lovely and the only member of staff doing anything), it then took a further 30mins for me to be able to order a bottle from same girl again. I asked for tea to accompany my afternoon tea, that never arrived. Ever. Atmosphere was rubbish, plastic plants, cheap decor. They almost lost our coats, took them 20mins to find them. Put my coat on top of a wet one when hanging so it was then wet when I put it on. I actually live in Manchester and this is the first time I’ve been to this place, I won’t be going again. Afternoon tea at midland is far superior

I was expecting a more sandwich ,and cake based afternoon tea. A very poor prawn wrap , dry pastry pumpkin tart, greasy mushroom ,and spinach pastry, small bun with ham probably the best of the savouries. Cakes although different were pretty much different flavour of the same heavy bottom and very rich topping. Tea and coffee , although coffee bean machine broke and waiter didn’t notice he served the weakest coffee that looked like weak tea. Gorgeousbord Smorgasbord Afternoon Tea! This afternoon tea comprised an exceptional spread of top quality sandwiches cakes and scones accompanied by a choice of a selection of finest teas. We felt thoroughly indulged and well looked after by all the staff and spoilt for the quality (and quantity!) of food served; every bite was an eye-opening Mmmm melt in the mouth moment; the chefs did an outstanding job to deliver such a variety of exceptional quality treats for us all. We were served by beautiful Nijma, whose Mother's Day greeting was delivered with such a personal note, that it was as if it was from my own daughter. Nijma showed us the tea selection and we chose one pot of chocolate tea and one pot of coconut tea - an extra shout out for the coconut tea! While Nijma was attentive to our every need throughout our experience, I noticed all members of staff were immaculately presented and observing a keen attentiveness to making sure everyone was happy, without any intrusiveness - nods and smiles all round. I was very impressed by the entire presentation, which doesn't seem feasible for such a small price; all the beautiful cut flowers, both around the centrepiece buffet and on every table; each immaculately presented with linen clothes and napkins. I do not believe there was a better Afternoon Tea spread anywhere else in town today and certainly no better value - I don't know how they did it, but am so happy they did. Thank you to every one who worked so hard to make this Mother's Day one to remember for all the best reasons. From the reception staff (arranging the free parking - thank you!) to the function room chefs and front of house servers - and the live artists who sang and played for us - A Big Big Thank you!

The meal in the River Restaurant was rather disappointing as we had expected excellence. The first negative was that the menu was very short, so we were quite limited in choice. However, we had decided to treat ourselves to a favourite red wine - Amarone (£135) which should go very well with our choice of sirloin steak. Unfortunately, on tasting the wine it was found to be thin, tired and flat rather than opulent, rich and full-bodied as should be expected with Amarone. In fairness, the manager accepted my comments and allowed us to chose an alternative - a Nero D'Avola (£36) which proved to be much more acceptable. We both chose the wild mushroom veloute to start. Whilst this was quite tasty, unfortunately it was not a veloute which is supposed to be 'velvet' smooth; it was a soup containing large pieces of mushroom. We both had sirloin steak which was certainly satisfactory but the whole dining expeerience had been undermined by the issues previously mentioned.

We had some Sourdough breads which had been cooked on the griddle with Chicken Fat butter and Dill salt flaks. Main of sous Vide Guinea Fowl Breast, Jerusalem artichoke etc. Burnt Leeks with Maluns potatoes. Sides of Boulangere potatoes and glazed carrot and candied pecans. What fantastic tastes. Deserts of cherry cheesecake actually shaped like a cherry with different crams etc and a brambly apple mousse, caramelised bread slice and other creams etc. See pictures of all food to see how good they looked. Very nice evening was had by both of us. One comment you don’t need two separate members of staff keep asking how the food is every time. My sister and I booked the restaurant as a treat to our mother. I had booked the afternoon tea online for the three of us and requested one vegan, one vegetarian and one traditional tea. We arrived early and sat in the bar area where we enjoyed a delicious cocktail each, the ruby, the Long Island and a champagne cocktail. Although the bar service was slow it did not hinder the wonderful experience. Once seated we were given an overview of how the afternoon teas would arrive; confirming one vegan, one vegetarian and one traditional. We upgraded the afternoon tea to the champagne afternoon tea and were presented with the two menus, One vegan and one traditional. I queried where the vegetarian option was to be informed there was no vegetarian option available. The afternoon teas arrived beautifully presented minus a specific item from the menu. We asked for the missing item which came without hesitation. Overall my mother, sister and I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience with a delicious afternoon tea. If there was to be any improvement from a 4 star review to a 5 star, it would be for a plain vegetarian option as originally offered and for the service to have attention to detail.

We visited for the vegan afternoon tea. TL;DR: don’t. We arrived & were greeted politely by front of house who asked to take our coats - this is as there was no coat storage near the seats. If you do this, get a ticket as it later took FoH 10 minutes to find our coats. We rang twice previously to ensure we would get the vegan option only & were presented with a vegan menu. When we ordered drinks, the waitress forgot the milk for the breakfast tea and brought dairy milk later. When we ordered the meal, the waiter Denilson asked if there were any problems with the menu or any allergies, no the menu is fine - vegan written all over it - and 1 peanut allergy. When the food arrived it wasn’t vegan. I had to ask the waiter what was this grey stuff inside the sandwich? It was tuna. He almost seemed angry that we weren’t pleased with this - it’s been 8 years vegan and we ordered specifically off the vegan menu - and took all the items away, speaking to FoH as he went. The replacement meal arrived a good half hour later, it seems we were bumped to the bottom of the queue for their mistake. When the food arrived, the inside of the sandwiches were cold - refrigerated meal-deal style - and there was a thin layer of dust on the afternoon tea tiered tray. I didn’t complain because I already felt we were on thin ice with the staff. They offer refills on the coffee and tea but the coffee honestly tastes like filter coffee or something. The cakes were nice but I appreciate a quality savoury spread, which this wasn’t. The scones were nice but plain with no raisins. I assume this is so they can easily tell the difference from non vegan scones which had raisins (we were given them before). Overall I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I expected a bit more from a restaurant in a 5 star hotel but the atmosphere was poor with grime ground into the edge joints of the table and music playing too loudly at the front, along with FoH forgetting where our coats were. Combined with the mashed tuna fiasco I would not recommend paying £30pp for a treat here.

My husband and I were given a present of a voucher for lunch at your lovely restaurant, which we used today. We had a lovely time - food was delicious and Sherman and his staff were very friendly and attentive ! We will be back!

Loud wedding going on at our time of dining which I see is nobody's fault but a bit annoying all the same. Food was nice, could have been better but think that was my poor choices.

We were here as it was our 30th Anniversary and our daughter bought us a Virgin Experience Voucher for the set three course Sunday lunch. This kind of restaurant is not the type that we frequent as it is way out of our budget range and I personally have a gripe with so called hi end food establishments. When we received the gift my first thoughts were it will be expensive and the food will be a lot better than we're used to. I also thought having seen cookery programmes on the TV that having finished my meal I would still be hungry. I was right on all three counts! So as the heading says, it's what you are used to and what your expectations are. The surroundings are very nice and we had a table by the window looking out onto the river, the table service was prompt and dignified. We ordered our drinks and was then given the menus where we then ordered our starters and mains. There wasn't anything apart from the soup that took my fancy on the starters and at no point either on the actual menu or by the waitress was I informed what the soup of the day actually was. I will eat all soups but I am not that partial to either tomato or mushroom. Yes you've already guessed.....it was mushroom. It was very strong and not to my liking so I was displeased at not being told what the soup of the day was which should be a basic requirement of the host. We ate our starters and the plates were taken away as we then waited for the mains to arrive. At this point even though we had finished our starters, the drinks still hadn't arrived. This was not an issue but they should certainly be with the guests before any food is served. Our mains arrived and were nicely presented on the plate. This was my initial concern that it's high end dining and presented lovely but there's only enough on the plate to fill a ten year old child. That said, the food was cooked and tasted lovely. We then had a strange twenty minute wait for our deserts including our host popping over to say sorry for the wait. There was no explanation and it didn't bother us at all but considering our starters and mains which have to be prepared arrived immediately, it was rather unusual to wait for desserts that I would of thought were pre prepared? Overall our experience was a nice one and a welcome change to our usual fare, but this is not really our bag and one we will not be repeating. I think this lunch would of cost our daughter £60-70 and this price for what we had could not be substantiated by myself if I had to pay it. As a footnote, you can park your car in the hotel car park for free so long as you spend over £50 in the restaurant and move it after you have dined. If you go elsewhere afterwards you will be charged a further £12!

I love the Lowry hotel and go quite a few times to the River Restaurant. We did a family Sunday lunch and I was shocked to see the price per person for the 3 course had gone up by £5 pp within the last couple of weeks. I asked why and was just told cost of food. I thought that was a big increase. We were also put in the breakfast side which I do not like the feel off. I prefer the actual restaurant side ( the orange side) it just feels much cozier in there. Staff friendly as usual.

Disappointed by our afternoon tea at the Lowry. Has to be said we had high expectations of an afternoon tea in a 5star hotel. Restaurant half empty but shown to a table directly next to another couple. Told a section of the restaurant was being set up for dinner service (@4pm) therefore advised we couldn’t sit here - later another couple having afternoon tea in that area!! One member of staff particularly unfriendly. What was good: gluten free scone was very tasty and other gluten free sweet options nice. What was not good: all Sandwiches made with white plain bread! (Both gluten free and normal option made with white bread!) Is that the best you can do? What cud be better: for heavens sake use loose leaf tea! Who makes afternoon tea with teabags - even if they are high end ones? Mainly lovely Elia cutlery except for my tea spoon - horrible canteen style stainless steel! When I asked for a flat white coffee (which was good) but this was again served with a similar stainless steel spoon. What was really bad: toilet cleanliness - cubicle doors that don’t lock, hair and several days of dirt and dust behind cubicle doors, soap dispensers hanging off and Restaurant ambience - open shelves with A4 ring bind folders visible to all diners . Also cabinet doors hanging off! Can’t believe it’s a 5 star hotel!

We were recently lucky enough to visit New York and had Afternoon Tea at The Plaza Hotel ( Home Alone 2 and facing Central Park)….. but I can honestly say that our Afternoon Tea experience at The Lowry was far superior in every respect! The staff in reception were very welcoming and we were very well looked after by our waiter, Denilson. We were seated in a comfy booth and the setting was lovely ( great views from the big picture windows despite scaffolding). The food was delicious, filling and unpretentious. The scones were gorgeous… obviously freshly made, and I had a perfectly generous pot of tea. Free car- parking was a terrific bonus for this central Manchester location. Would recommend for a special treat!

Maybe, the only pub in Manchester that has weissbier. The atmosphere was great, but I can't talk about the food, as I didn't get any. The live performer was great 👍

Fantastic pub, as a newbie to the area all the staff and customers were very welcoming. Karaoke on the weekend is always a laugh and the Wednesday pub quiz is now my home away from home. Highly recommend to anyone passing through!
