Booked a table online, taking a chance on a place to eat we had not eaten before. My wife and I were with another couple and had the following from the menu: Starters; 2x Ham Hock & Cheddar Croquette, Mustard Mayo. 1x Cajun Tiger Prawns, Asian Sauce, Mixed Leaves. 1x Nachos – Sour Cream, Guacamole, Salsa. Mains; 2x Slow Cooked Rack of Ribs, House Made Barbeque Sauce, Fries, Coleslaw (1x half & 1x full) 1x Quesadilla, Toasted Tortilla Wrap with Melted Cheddar, Onion and Peppers, with added Cajun Chicken 1x Cooked Venison Haunch Steak, Chive Mash, Seasonal Vegetables, Port Reduction, Berry Jus. The food was outstanding, all of our food pierced at the table hot and freshly cooked, flavour of all the dishes was fantastic. I had the venison dish and it was exquisite. Staff were very friendly and helpful, with table service and a good knowledge of the menu. We would all definitely return to this pub/restaurant. Food and drinks were reasonably priced.

Not sure what was going on our visit this evening? Loud music and foul language from a guest bedroom upstairs. I don’t know what else to say except it was very unpleasant!

This was close to where we were staying, so we just had to try it. Some good beers, including a local brewery were on offer and the menu looked inviting. It seemed a bit like a locals pub with people sitting at the bar. We were shown to our table and we ordered our drinks. We had the specials board placed near us and that’s exactly what we went for. Pan fried duck breast cooked beautifully. Moules mariniere with plenty of mussels, bread and chips. What was really good about this dish was the sauce! There was some parsley sprinkled on, but there was a lot of tarragon and it was beautifully creamy. We finished off with chocolate orange bread and butter pudding with a dollop of vanilla ice cream on top. This was very tasty and VERY filling. We enjoyed it so much that we changed a booking with a friend to here as it served a Sunday Roast, which he wanted. One pork belly and two lamb dishes were eaten with good roast potatoes, a good mix of vegetables and very good Yorkshire puddings and gravy. We finished this off with biscoff cheesecake x 2 and two scoops of blackberry and clotted cream ice cream. All went down well. Good service too.

Went today, was very busy but staff were very upbeat and efficient. The roast was excellent and plentiful with all the trimmings. The decor is standard for an old fashioned country pub, but I was there to enjoy the food, I did, and would definitely go back.

Awful! is about all i can say. We ate there 2 weeks or so ago. Stopping in on our way through the village it looked lovely from the outside - we should have left it there. The inside was a totally different story! Not only did we wait an age to be seated and served but we had to remind the waitress about or drinks. When the food did eventually arrive it was warm at best and i certainly wouldn't recommend it, i've had better microwave ready meals. The pub its self looked in dyer need of a good clean it was disgusting. I have used more hygenic public toilets and my partner said that the men's was even worse, with waste water from the urinals all over the floor. Im amazed they are allowed to stay open. The entire place is a hovel.I don't honestly have a lot more to say about this place other then its an utter disgrace. The bar staff leave a lot to be desired. Not only are they miserable and lack luster they were useless, forgetting orders and clearly not capable of even the most minimal customer service. They were more content standing about chatting and helping themselves to drinks. it was more like a youth hostel then a welcoming local pub. - wont be going back.

Attended with 3 friends for Sunday lunch. The car park was full which bodes well for the lunch. The roasts were either beef or pork and we ordered 3 pork and 1 beef. All were good and enjoyed. Only one of the party had wine, the rest having lime and soda. The young staff were attentive and friendly and very active with clients. While I do not approve of smoking, the cigarette end containers outside the door were full and there was overflow on the path. My wife reported this and it was immediately cleared. The pub has changed hands again recently and they will have to try hard to keep up the standards of service and food established by the previous publican. I will keep watch!

This pub has a friendly welcoming atmosphere. We had been out with the dogs and were wet and cold. The bar staff made us so welcome and made such a fuss of the pack we stayed for food rather that just the drink we originally went in for.We had a selection of bar snacks and they were all superb. The pub has a lovely rustic feel and is definately one we will be returning to.The main menu had a good and varied choice and from we could see the meals were all pretty hearty.

I take my daughter to The Rising Sun for dinner at least once a week. The staff and manager are friendly and helpful. The food is always very tasty and presented well. They always give her colouring to keep her entertained. The lighter bites menu gives a great choice for kids. There is a real team atmosphere. I've read some of the negative reviews and none of them even sound like the same venue. I highly recommend steak night 2 steak dinners and a bottle of wine £20 bargain. I also look forward to trying out curry night. I noticed they have a Monday quiz, Tuesday steak night, curry night and weekend entertainment. What more can you ask of from your local. We look forward to dining with you again soon. *****My only request is can you put the ribs back on the menu they are amazing.

We visited this pub to celebrate my grandmothers birthday. When we ordered our food my husband asked to "upgrade" his chips to include cheese and bacon (which was offered as a side) and he would pay the cost of the side in addition to his meal. We were soon informed by the waitress that the chef had refused this request as he "does not accept alterations to the menu". I'm sorry? What? We had simply asked for something on the menu to be added to a meal and were paying for that. We therefore ordered a separate portion of chips with cheese and bacon as offered as a side on the menu, expecting this to come with the rest of the mains. These chips were then delivered to our table before our starters! We obviously sent them away. Starters were ok - not great. Our mains were then delivered to our table with the cheesy chips. They had very clearly just put the original portion under the hot plate and bought them back out at the right time. The cheese was solid and the chips were dry. They also forgot the sauce my husband ordered with his meal as well as half of the bits and pieces it was supposed to come with, but by this point we could not be bothered to complain. The arrogance of the chef is unbelievable, particularly given that the food is at best acceptable. I can understand if we had asked for the meal to be substantially altered, but we simply asked for a portion of the cheesy chips that he already offers on his menu to be put on my husbands plate. This is not a fine dining restaurant and if this attitude continues you will soon find yourselves alienated from the local community as there are plenty of places that will cook what the customer asks for. Service was slow. The waitresses knew absolutely nothing about the menu and they had to go back to get all the bits and pieces they forgot to add to the order which extended the time it took to serve our main courses. All in all a poor show and we will not be returning.

I was very disappointed with the service, to say it was like pulling teeth to get a drink was an understatement, there were several staff chatting and laughing to busy to serve the larger lady posing as the manager said she would sort it love after supping out of her pint. The food was warm and not of the quality of our last visit, also people were smoking by the doors mainly staff also smoke was blowing in to the restaurant where we were sat eating we certainly wont be returning anytime soon how a lovely village pub can become so poor in such a short time its a shame where have the polite well mannered well spoken staff gone I wonder to be by a scruffy lazy team.

A September Tuesday evening found six good friends taking advantage of Steak night at the Rising Sun. £20 for two steak dinners with a very passable bottle of wine. The food was well cooked and well presented. Everyone in our party enjoyed the meal and the atmosphere added to the enjoyment. The restaurant-pub was very busy but this did not impact at all on service, there was no delay in food arriving. The staff were very attentive and cheerful. The rising sun is a lovely old village pub. It has a good choice and quality of food. Table and Bar service is always very good too.On some evenings the pub offers quizzes and bands which are well attended. Because of its village location the pub always has a friendly atmosphere and this is definitely not the sort of place where trouble might break out. The Rising Sun also offers B&B and although Ive never used this service I have heard the rooms are well kept and the service very good. Not a cheap pub meal, more a better home cooked food kind of price. Would definitely recommend a visit.

I stood here for 20 minutes on two separate occasions waiting to be served. On one occasion there was nobody behind the bar and the second occasion there was a young blond girl who was too busy pouring herself a tomato juice then, upon checking her glass realised it had lipstick on, pouring it away before helping herself to another. She then had a sip and walked out the back. I thought that I would see how observant the staff were on this occasion and the answer, they are not. The staff all look miserable as if they do not want to be there and, of the three working on this particular day, only one was paying any attention to the bar area - it wasn't the blond one or the fuller figured dark haired one who just sat at the bar on the customers side most of the time.

Re-visited this establishment on my wife and I's wedding anniversary and found nothing has changed - good food, fair prices, good staff clean establishment. Only downside I heard that the owners will be leaving some time in the future! What a loss for Clanfield! I wish the proprietors well in their new venture wherever and whenever that may be. This place is a joke if you stand at the bar you should expect to be served if not that busy. I waited 20 minutes to be served in a pub that wasn't that busy. 3 staff on and not 1 behind the bar. I should've just helped myself!!!Speaking to regulars, this is not unusual. They told me that they are quite often left with no one behind the bar and when they do come round, they serve the first person they see not ask who is next. The staff that I spoke to complain about their bosses and most cannot wait to leave stating they are on no contracts and some staff have been sacked for "personal complaints" but none of these are proven. I could not pass comment on this side of it but certainly feel that the staff are in general an unhappy bunch.

Tried to have lunch here today. It was lunchtime and with the relatively small choice of meals and snacks available, (breakfast stops at 11:30am) it would have been reasonable to assume that demand could be met. Wrong! With only three quarters of tables occupied, my first choice of meal was unavailable due to a lack of potatoes. So, having had to choose another dish, twenty minutes passed before being informed that an ingredient for that was missing. I found this unacceptable and left having been refunded for the inconvenience of having to put up with such shoddy service. I was not the only complainant and something needs doing to improve service in this establishment.

Was the best Sunday Roast dinner we've had in a long time, plates were warmed, food excellent and service was very good, plenty of parking and noticed they have quite a few offers on during the week at lunchtimes. Lovely location too for a countryside walk before or after.

Beautiful rare roast beef, crispy roast potatoes and perfectly cooked veg. Cauliflower cheese was pricey but definitely worth it. Service was excellent, a small army - all helpful and cheery. Now feeling full and content!!
