The Rising Sun in Tewkesbury

Stayed here the weekend to explore The Cotswolds. We opted for a room with garden view and so glad we did, sunset was amazing and views for miles. The food was absolutely delicious and breakfast to die for, so much choice. Highly recommend visiting The Rising Sun and look forward to returning

We stayed the night and ate in the restaurant on our hike of the Cotswolds Way. The room was perfect for what we needed and the bar and restaurant were really good too. The view is amazing, so worth a visit just for that. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We've been to other Green King Pubs that offer the same menu and the quality and size of portions was good. They have a good draught beer cover too.

Really disappointing visit this time, service was very slow, we were only people eating at this time . Items on food menu not available once we ordered although notices advertising specials were displayed . After settling on new main Choice. We had to get up and go to main bar to order dessert and when finished sane again to pay bill. On leaving there was about 12 persons in the bar area at tables so god nows how long they will have to wait.

Always friendly, efficient service. Eat and drink there practically every week. Very Mountain bike friendly.

A warm welcome when you arrive. Stunning views from our bedroom. Our room was tired and although very clean due to the wonderful housekeeping team, it needed "loving". Absolutely fine for the two night break I had with my wife. Please don't put the tired decor off booking as everything else makes up for it. The gluten free food selection (bring a Celiac Disease sufferer) was actually surprisingly good for a chain pub. The waiting staff in the evening were excellent and really attentive. Miley on the breakfast shift was also really attentive and was really polite. A great venue to investigate the area and enjoy what The Shire has to offer. We would definitely come back.

Stayed for the 7th time now but this stay in room 19 was poor, floor creaked everywhere, the shower curtain clinged to the skin, the curtain is far too high and close to my body...tiny room also, coffee at breakfast was cold and bitter....in fact breakfast was a lesser standard than before.. Probably tipped us over the edge not to stay again ..

The appearance of the restaurant is average, but the food is great. Large parking lot, I didn't stay at the hotel. I recommend the food, I will definitely go back.

We are often in The rising sun when we are visiting our family in Cheltenham. We love the view the breakfast and the bar. The hotel rooms are very comfortable and the beds are very clean and comfortable. Every time we stay there we are really enjoying Best Sylvia from Hamburg in Germany

My wife and I went for the Sunday roast, quite disappointing, food tasted as though it had been standing for some time and just heated up in the microwave, wasn't even hot. We were very hungry so didn't complain plus don't like to make a scene. Besides the meal, quite nice ambience and waitress was very polite and provided a good service and Ruddy's Special beer was a nice drop of beer. If I thought the food was fresh and hot next time, then would return as it is a good location to the hotels where we stayed.

Beautiful location and nice cozy pub. Staff were attentive and helpful. Starters were excellent especially the soup - would of given five stars overall but main course wasn't quite so good (and wine needed to be more chilled). Lamb shank tasted microwaved. All in all though a nice setting and great service.

One of the best views I've seen for a long time. The car park is big enough to manoeuvre a long wheel base van so anyone else should be fine. No plug sockets next to the bed which is a shame The staff are very friendly and helpful. Big shout out to Bexley for smashing the morning shift you guys definitely don't pay him enough

Booked a table at the Rising Sun for my graduation celebration meal and we had a brilliant time. The location is fab, really beautiful views of Cleeve and the layout and decor inside the restaurant is really lovely. We were served by Jam, Lauren & Lexi who were all absolutely fab, really friendly and accommodating, made sure we had everything we needed throughout the evening and kept the whole area clean & tidy and ticking along smoothly even with people coming and going regularly, honestly couldn’t have asked for better service. Delicious food, cooked really quickly too, I think we barely waited ten minutes from ordering. Would definitely highly recommend the Rising Sun!

Visit usually when I am racing in Cheltenham, I no longer use the accommodation as I find it expensive to the various Airbnbs on Cleeve Hill.Booked dinner and wine for 2 nights. Very disappointed to have a nice starter in my Calsmari, but then presented with a Lasagne that had been microwaved to death and was stuck had to the plate at the bottom, and basically dried out.To be fair the manager took this off my bill, but my immediate concerns where that this was served to me at 6.35pm at the start of evening service, not at the end of a hard shift, the rocket that came with it looked like the watery end of a bag opened 3 days earlier from the fridge. Saturday night although disappointed the previous evening, I persevered, and was served a Schnitzel, and although a little dry, was reasonably satisfied. My main point is that I travel alone, and budget 50 pounds for a good evenings meal and a bottle of wine, a little ambience and an early night.....I do feel that over the years, and I've been coming down to Cheltenham for over 40 years the place has lost its identity, it doesn't know its market and needs to be broke back up to how it was originally , a bar and pub area , a restaurant, and a hotel......3 areas each with specific aims and revenue streams, etc.....

Peter and Jan stayed with you on 19th and 20th September 2024 and wanted to leave a five star review. They want to give a special mention to Jake and Bexley, food and service was excellent. They had a wonderful stay and will definitely be back.

I was taken there for lunch. The food was wonderful. I had lasagne.. so light and tasty. Service was also perfect.. lovely to have the view as well. Definitely recommend lunch there

A great location to stay if walking the Cotswold Way as it not too far off the path. The room was basic, but comfortable, and good value. The pub has great views. There is also a large car park.

Had a love evening food was excellent service also 5* Tom was very polite and professional, despite being very busy. Well recommend to friends and family.

Picked this “nice” place on Google to have a nice bank holiday lunch… booked, arrived at venue around 15:00, waited a good half hour to have a beer and a glass of wine at the bar, there was only a poor lady alone serving people. The place wasn’t busy at all, only a few people on the garden, inside it was just us 2 and another table, we had to ask the waiters 3 times if we could order, after a good hour we’ve managed to order, waited another 45/50 minutes for food to arrive (after asking updates on our order already), food came out and not even exactly what we have ordered… so basically 2.5 hours for a soup (with the wrong bread) and a chicken breast. We waved, waited, chased waiters to as for the bill, tried for 15/20 minutes to pay, literally NO ONE was even bothered to come to our table. Sorry to admit, but we had to walk out. If we didn’t we would probably still be there waiting for the bill after 3 hours!! Such a shame. Nice place but worst service EVER.

Perfect location to watch the sunset whilst eating dinner and having a few drinks! Served by Tom who was by far the nicest waiter who made us feel very welcome. He made our night perfect! The mocktails were amazing and at totally reasonable prices 😃 Would definitely return here on our next visit to the Cotswolds! ❤️

This would have been 5* as the food is great, as are the drinks and the view is amazing. Unfortunately £3.50 for a small coke or lemonade (mainly ice and soda water) when given the location requires a driver, left a bitter taste given all of the above was so good. Please feed up into Green King as this is very 1980’s

Great place with an amazing view over Cheltenham City. Good food, quiet place to enjoy your time with friends and family.

We stayed at the Rising Sun last Saturday 10/8/24. A strange start at booking in,we were told that you can no longer charge food and drink to your room as people run off without paying. An odd statement as you have to swipe a card on arrival.!! We stayed in their best suite. We stayed in the same room last year,there has been no improvement eg two pairs of worn out chairs and some heavy furniture. Oh and a mouse/rat sender of a signal to dissuade their presence under the dressing table The bathroom is adequate allowing for the worn out extractor fan and the fact to climb into the bath it would help to be Colin Jackson so high are the sides. Lastly when we went for dinner we were greeted by a girl young anoth to be our grand daughter calling us "my lovlies and my love". Now we are not in our dotage but I've been on this earth for sixty nine years and my wife longer, so we are not ready for the nursing home treatment just a little respect( I was always taught respect for your elders).

In truth the venue is quite average. It trades on the grandeur of the building and the setting atop Cleeve Hill.

Great location next to Cleeve Common and various view points. A few Vegan options and staff are usually friendly. However they won't always allow you to take your meals outside.

We had Sunday lunch in the restaurant. My lamb shank was delicious although I was surprised to get Brussel sprouts in my seasonal veg (in July)! Others in the group had the roast and they had large portions. For me, the roast potatoes were not crisp enough but that is personal preference. The service was ok but they managed to get two of the orders wrong. Great views, especially when it started raining, watching the rain moving across the plain.

Decided to pop back after not visiting for a long time! Great atmosphere as there was a wedding party downstairs, but restaurant still quiet for food. Fish and chips is decent and my cheese and bacon burger was delish! Service exceptional, server was a lady called Molly (I think) and she did a great job!

Stopped here for a bite to eat. It's a massive building with a hotel pub and restaurant. Has outside tables for eating and admiring the scenery which is stunning. Food is okay, service was a bit lackluster

Still a beautiful location for sunshine drinks. Service was slow,as only a few members of staff serving drinks, food and doing the receptionist duties. I stayed the night, but feel the whole place needs a good clean and updating, especially the bedrooms.

Great over all, food was ok, had a steak sandwich for lunch is was lovely just abit over cooked. Great location.

I quite like this place, they are family and dog friendly, Big car park, right next to a lovely place to walk with indoor and outdoor seating that has so e cracking views over Cheltenham.

Reasonably priced and tasty food. Mango cider was great. Fantastic views.

Stayed there only one night lovely place and staff good food

We stayed in the superior room which had 2 Bay windows with chairs for fantastic views. Our first night was great we had a drink outside in the garden overlooking the severn valley. Then we had a good meal with a lovely bottle of chateauneuf de pape.in the glassed area of the restaurant. We booked the same table for the following night. The next night was not so good an experience. Our table was already occupied there was a group with a screechy baby and nobody wanted to sit near them . In the end we chose to sit at the far end of the bar area away from the noise. Then they had run out of the ale maiden voyage, run out of the chateauneuf de pape and also the sancerre. Hence a 3 not a 4 star rating.

We are in the bar, we cleared all the glasses off our table and asked for someone to wipe it when free and were given a cloth to do it ourselves! Not impressed with such service.

A nice location, but the restaurant was looking and feeling tired. Food was average with limited choice and no deals like your normal greene king pub. It's ok.

Is this the best hotel I've ever stayed, no. What it is, is a well presented, clean, brilliantly located hotel. The food was good, really good. This was a 4* visit, but for the staff. We were served/looked after/cared for by Lauren and Zoe and they could not have been better. Thank you.

Ideally sited on main road into Cheltenham about 4 miles away. So it's taxis each time you go there. I guess the whole place is a throwback from the 70s/80s. A tad tired. Bedroom (downstairs) was quite small but adequate for a short stay. WiFi was not bad throughout hotel. All very functional but adequate for a short stay. Friendly staff, would give this place an 8 out of 10.

Have been here many times over the last 7 years for a meal and have never been disappointed . Staff are awesome, food is exceptional, and value for money is second to none. If you've never been, you are missing out.

My husband was originally from Cheltenham and last visited the Rising Sun some 60 years ago. We (my husband, daughter and myself ) stayed at the Rising Sun for 1 night last week and had a wonderful stay. Although the bedrooms could do with an upgrade they were clean, well equipped and the bed was so so comfortable. We paid for rooms with a view and it was well worth the extra few pounds. The staff were very accommodating and the service was excellent. The food was delish and if you book directly with the hotel you get a 20% off your food bill. Will we be booking to stay again absolutely.

Beautiful location but food was overpriced and overcooked

Recently I booked 3 nights with breakfast. The room and bathroom was very cleaned. I didn't see any mould anywhere. Stunning out view and easy to walk on the hills. The girl and boy in the restaurant are very nice and calm. I will 100% visit again.

We came here for a birthday meal and had a very unfortunate experience. Not everything was available on the food and drinks menus and our order was not processed when we placed it so we had to ask where it was and it had to be re-ordered, causing us to eat over an hour later! However, they were very apologetic for the error and did not charge us for our meals. A great example of how to turn a negative customer experience into a positive, it did not go unnoticed. The food was very lovely when it arrived, I would eat there again.

A wonderful place to enjoy a drink and look at the view. Service is always amazing and the rooms are good.

We visited for a Sunday lunch and while the food was good, the views great and the staff helpful I can't rate more than a 3 star because I couldn't change my child's nappy because there is only a changing facility in the female toilets!

Location and service was good (although short staffed) but food was pretty grim. £13.50 for a burger that was smaller than a mcds cheeseburger with burger buns that were hard due to being nuked too much in the microwave.

Visited this pub for an evening meal with my family. The food was great, the service was excellent and friendly even though it was a busy Saturday night.

Best Family Christmas party thanks to the efficiency of all the staff at Rising Sun. We will be back again soon.
