Local to where we were staying, this is a classic pub but with a "bistro" twist. Landlord and (experienced chef) is a proper host - and the WiFi password is fun

Recently moved to the area and have been to the Rising Sun a couple of times over the past few weeks, based on a recommendation. Absolutely love this place. Really excellent food, with additional options given which are not on the menu, according to quality products available locally. Simon and his team produce an excellent welcome and truly delicious food, with lots of attention to detail. The place has a lovely atmosphere. Strongly recommend the venue, the variety on offer and the excellent and attentive service from the team.

Excellent food, the Sunday Table Top Carvery was quite possibly some of the best lamb I have ever eaten. We were staying nearby on holiday and went back later in the week for steak, which again was superb. The staff were friendly (the pub is dog friendly as well - bonus) and we met the owner/chef. The pub is out of the way and deserves to be a success and we wish them all well. Just make sure you duck on the way out, the door is bloody low and beer reduces awareness!!! Ask me how I know...

Regrettably I was late finding this place before it closed. Had a few good experiences there. Did not know what was awaiting when I revisited. To be fair the food and drinks were OK but the atmosphere was severely lacking. The pub was dark. In fact I thought it was closed on arrival! It was cold despite a log fire. We could not take our coats off! The welcome was also somewhat lacking. A real shame as we are local and was looking forward to finding a cosy pub for regular use. Nevertheless I hope the business does well.

The Rising Sun, owned by Barry and Sarnia McGoun and managed by chef Olly Jackson and his charming wife, Rebecca, is one of the loveliest traditional pubs I've ever had the pleasure of visiting in England (the Highlands of Scotland where I live doesn't have pubs as such, just bars). This country pub with its 600-year history was completely and tastefully refurbished after it was purchased by the couple, who live next door. The Rising Sun retains much of its Elizabethan charm and features. As the owners point out, although a food-led pub, it's preserved as the village local. Drinkers are most welcome, for a night out with chums, popping in for myriad beverages and freshly baked pastries. Dogs are welcome with their well-behaved owners in gum boots or stilettos. We were a family party of ten last Sunday. The cuisine was second to none. Ollie is the consummate perfectionist. The food was not only a sight to behold, but also an exquisite taste to match. They work with Strode College to provide NVQ level qualifications in Front of House and Cooking. Most of the qualification is completed in house (the exception, if any assistance is needed, for mathematics and English key skills). They pay above the apprentice wage. This is a super opportunity to work alongside a very experienced team and gain qualifications that can take apprentices worldwide! I can always tell the atmosphere of anywhere the moment I set foot in the door. We were warmly welcomed. Sam is superb at the bar. Enthusiastic and gregarious, he's always developing new cocktails. Fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, beers ales and gins are locally sourced. Mel and the other staff catered for our every need. There was no waiting for service. They appeared as if by magic. Their whole approach was genuine and professional without being sycophantic. They were good humoured and fun to be with. Compare that to places who offer service with a snarl and one has to spend so much time trying to attract attention to request items that should be there in the first place. One of the tricks I used when taking groups of friends to dinner in London was to give a substantial tip up front and say, if the meal was to everybody's satisfaction, I would double the tip...if not, I'd have the earlier tip back. It worked like a dream every time. After all, what is the point of waiting to the end of the meal, only to find everything is below par? The other thing I used to request was to provide a menu with no prices on it, which made my guests more comfortable when treated. The Rising Sun required no such shenanigans on our parts. We just knew the evening would be memorable and perfect in every conceivable way. This establishment has weathered the Covid storm and flourished. Long may The Rising Sun's good fortunes continue. Most highly recommended.

That said Becca did say we could choose off the snack menu. Anyway we both decided to have Guniea Fowl, well, wow, what a beautiful well presented meal. It was delicious. "Are we going the right way?" It certainly feet like we were in the middle of nowhere when we turned a corner and were greeted by a row of tables with umbrellas outside an old cottage style house. Watch your head on the way in. Duck. You don't want to spill your tray of drinks. Underestimate how low the entrance is to the pub at your peril. A good selection of drinks on draught. The menu for the small restaurant area looks impressive and there's adequate parking at the rear of the pub.

A fantastic evening at The Rising Sun. The food was absolutely outstanding, could not fault it at all. The staff were utterly charming, so attentive and helpful, they also make a fantastic Margarita! My only issue was the dogs. Totally understand dog friendly pubs, especially during the day after a long walk, popping in for a drink and a sandwich with the dog sleeping at your feet… but I do struggling with dogs in a restaurant atmosphere in the evening. I suffer from a severe dog allergy, the staff were kind and move us as the table next to us had their 2 dogs with them. I just feel that in an eating/restaurant all dressed up for dinner at restaurant prices, maybe dogs at the table in the evening is not ideal.

I like lots of gravy so I usually ask for more and they never have a problem with this.We had desserts, absolutely delicious, so nice to have a dessert menu where all desserts are homemade, nothing worse than having a large selection of desserts where they are just brought in , that taste like cardboard like in many establishments. On Sunday 3rd November my parents and myself and my partner visited for Sunday lunch. (This used to be a local for me and was always excellent). So I had no qualms about booking here ......How wrong was I. The restaurant was freezing cold - they offered to put the heating on - a small plug in heater. Drinks were ordered and arrived quickly. Order was taken. Sunday lunch. Beef for me. Pork for everyone else. When asked if we wanted sauces we were shocked to have apple sauce arrive in a container 1/2 the size of an eggcup for each person. Lunch arrived. The plates were cold, and therefore the food was lukewarm. Extra veg came out for 4 people Enough for about a tablespoon each. No extra gravy. The dessert menu was very limited. Asked for coffee - latte - sorry can’t do that - so warm instant tasting coffee arrived. I can only presume that in the few years since I last visited it has changed hands, The ladies toilet had no lock on the door So disappointed. Was supposed to be a special meal.

We had steak which was melt in the mouth, it came with lovely chips - some of the best I've had! Now, I had a lovely meal, the roast really was incredible. Although, I couldn’t help but notice the way of the landlord. He’s a lovely man and I’m sure he always is, but. He runs around in a rush all the time and then proceeds as though nothing has happened and it’s a bit awkward. But sadly my biggest problem is the way he spoke to the staff. There was a young lad serving us and he did a great job, he was really nice. However the manager would run and barge into the kitchen he would completely change, we could hear it all! He would shout and rush the poor lad all the time, never giving him a chance and he seemed nervous of the manager. It was quite sad. I think the lad was also meant to be washing up as well, he can’t do both, give him a chance! We would hear the manager, running in, shouting at whoever was in there and then chucking plates everywhere.

Four of us visited and to be really honest speaking for just two of us we were disappointed. After reading the reviews we thought we were in for a real treat, a gourmet experience but what we did get was a very average meal. Starters were okay at best, my husbands soup was warm, the other two (us Katie's shared) were okay the the Mains, 1 chilli con carne very nice. 2 Cajun chicken burgers okay and 1 Sirloin steak which was according to my husband very nice. Always disappointing to be served frozen chips. Presentation was good. The REAL bad bit was the landlord encouraging us to have Cheesecake for dessert, only two slices left he said so we had the last two slices (from the freezer) yes you read that correctly, they were frozen and totally tasteless. I make Mint Aero Cheesecake (I am a retired chef) and it's fabulous, this was tasteless, along with not so good tasteless chocolate ice cream and squirt of cream (from a can) the best thing on the plate was the mint chocolate stuck in the ice cream. Normally I would have said something but we were with friends and I didn't want to spoil the evening. The BEST thing about the night was without a doubt the young waiter (who I think is actually quite a shy and nervous person but he was so lovely.) With the right coaxing he could be brilliant, he's a lovely young man but just needs his confidence building. (Can't see that happening there with the landlord though...) Don't think we will be rushing back for what we would say is average pub grub no more no less and being where they are (off the beaten track) they need to be excellent not just average.

We visited The Rising Sun as part of a countryside walk. The landlord is friendly and welcoming, even gave our dog "Scoot" filtered water from the bar! There was a good atmosphere in the bar where people were enjoying Sunday lunch. We didn't want a full lunch but he was quite happy to provide a sandwich with a choice from the meats used for Sunday lunch - these were excellent as were the beers.

Often call into the Rising Sun for a pint. The beer is well kept and there's always a choice of real ales. A fire in the bar in the winter and a cool room with flagstone floors for the summer. The landlords welcoming, and has a sense of humour so every thing you could be looking for.

Visited last Saturday for Dinner with my wife and 2 friends. Attentive service and excellent food particularly the sirloin steaks enjoyed by 2 of us which were outstanding. Overall a very enjoyable evening in a lovely atmospheric country pub.

A brisk walk along the canal from Creech with the thought of a delicious Sunday lunch here must be one of my favourite ways to spend a Sunday!

I visited the RISING SUN, KNAPP both for a works Christmas occasion late December and again for New Year’s Eve celebrations. On both occasions the service was first class! Excellent food for the Christmas party, when they managed brilliantly with a party of 20 or so people, food was delicious, well presented and plentiful.....and a few of us gluten free members of the party were well catered for. Staff were superb.... always friendly and couldn’t be more helpful. New Year’s Eve was also excllent with a great atmosphere and live music. Lovely country pub, open fire and a warm welcome. I would highly recommend!

Again, Duncan, mine host and his staff did us proud for our gathering of old Bristol friends on Sunday 3rd December. We were treated to a large laid-up table in the old Medieval cider house side of the pub, with its old bread oven, open fire, oak-plank party wall and inglenook fireplace.

Cannot recommend this pub enough. Visited on Tuesday for an evening meal. The staff were very friendly, welcoming and attentive. Good choice of food between the menu and specials board. The homemade food was delicious and a generous serving.

Quite simply an amazing Sunday roast and welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. The meat was plentiful and well cooked and the veg likewise. The staff cannot do enough to help you either. A lovely way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. Thank you to Dawn and Duncan as always.

Last minute decision to eat out led to finding this amazing pub in the country, great atmosphere and friendly staff, I can honestly say it has been a very long time since I have enjoyed a Sunday roast as much as the one served at the rising sun, A little bit of a wait but we did arrive quite late but nothing was to much trouble it would of been easy to say sorry we only have a limited menu at this time, so I would advise on booking early. I really can't wait for my next visit

Ordered a home delivery. Overdone fish , cold chips and the smallest pot of mushy peas I’ve ever had . Shocking considering it cost £24 for very poor food .

Was shown to table, really friendly staff. Chose the breakfast and a couple of drinks. It looks expensive but well worth it. As wasn’t busy, came out quick. Though it was starting to fill up. Only criticism is plates need to be warmed as food went cold quick, and more butter. We would return.
