We had been 3 ti.mes before the experience we had last week. We had always been in the resteraunt but this time 5 of us was put on a tiny table in the corner of the bar..lt wasn't comfortable leaving at all.The staff were friendly but we asked for water 3 times and never got it We had been raving about the pub to our family but this time we were disappointed. We were going to book 20th Oct for an occasion but have de cided to go somewhere else just in case. We will come again but on our own. Such a shame as we loved it before.

We were recommended this place to eat . Personally if I was driving by I would not stop as the place does not look inviting compared to other country pubs . However the decor inside is traditional, the welcome was warm , and it was full of returning locals creating a natural atmosphere. ( dog friendly in the bar ) The food was delicious, locally sourced fresh and well presented and service was delivered with a smile , reasonably attentive and good. I would go back again . We recommend this place .

Sunday lunch for 8 of us as a birthday celebration was just excellent. From the welcome and service of Nick and his colleagues to the quality of the starters, mains and puds, all was outstanding. Due to excellent experiences at this restaurant previously, yesterday evening we took our family to celebrate our daughter’s 18th birthday. The food was absolutely delicious. Across three courses it was pure heaven! Our party was made up of those who regularly eat at higher end restaurants as well as farmers who love a good feed, and everyone was happy! The staff who looked after us were fantastic as always, attentive, conscientious and personable. Many thanks as always to the team

Walked to this pup as sadly the place we were staying at had no phone signal or Wi-fi. The restaurant was fully booked on a Saturday. We should have called. Not sure how lol. We put our name on the waiting list but as they only employ one chef that was 1 hour 20 mins minimum. Had a pint and left after 30 mins. Moral of the story call before you turn up if you want food. Didn’t feel like returning after this one visit.

Brought her by friends for a really great evening meal.A lovely old farm house turned into a delightful pub with restaurant deep in the Cornish countryside on the edge of Bodmin moor.We ate mainly from the fish offerings which were beautifully fresh and presented with delicious saucing. There is a small but good wine list at reasonable prices,I am also told there are excellent local beers. The scallops were wonderful as was the hake main course. Indulgent puds were also on offer. This place is well worth finding and is not over priced for the quality it offers

The Rising Sun could not have provided a more welcoming atmosphere after our morning rally around the lanes of mid-Cornwall. Service was excellent, the range of beers and ales superb and the lunches we all enjoyed were absolutely perfect, from traditional roasts to vegan meals, plus the desserts were exceptional. This has my top rating for any eatery in Cornwall and provides good value for money. Do not miss it!!

We can across this lovely little pub after visiting the Davidstow war museum. We popped in to see if was dog friendly and open for food, luckily for us it was a yes to both. We was given a really warm welcome and the dog was given fresh water and a couple of treats so he was over the moon. We looked over the menu and specials board after ordering our drinks which we was able to put on a tab. The menu and specials board had some lovely dishes on so we was stuck as to what to have. After we had made our mind up we went back up to the bar to order. To start we had the grilled sardines and a seafood chowder. The sardines were amazing and the chowder really tasty and full of fish and came with a slice of fresh homemade bread. For our mains we settled for the mussels in a garlic and cream sauce with frites and the liver with bacon, mash and veg. The liver was slightly over cooked to our liking but both dishes was tasty and quite large portions. For desserts we ordered the profiteroles with cherry ice cream without the warm chocolate sauce and a panna cotta with wine soaked blueberries. The panna cotta was really well set and really enjoyable, the profiteroles had the cherry ice cream inside and again was really tasty. The cost for the two starters, mains and desserts with drinks came to less than £61 which for the quality was great value for money. Overall this place is a great dog friendly pub that serves good quality food with superb friendly owners what's not to like. We will return.

We were attending a wedding at a near by venue and we were a big party. The manageress was fantastic! We were managed brilliantly, their service and communication considering the party size (30 odd) was fab! Now the food ... rarely do you have such a large party who are all impressed with their food. This place achieved that! We all had mains and sweets, all very impressive. Both appearance, quality and taste. Also impressive selection of beers, ales etc Friendly chatty locals too.

So pleased we got to dine at the Rising Sun this evening which was recommended by our host at Trevadlock Manor. The owners were so friendly and food was just amazing. Two of us had the duck meal which was beautifully cooked and not too much on the plate. Hubby enjoyed his "posh bangers and mash" very much and our foster young man had a yummy beef burger which he gobbled up in no time! Dessert was simply divine and tonight's special was a favourite - pavlova with passion fruit and raspberry! What's not to like about something so profoundly delicious. All in all, a wonderful experience for food lovers! If you're holidaying in the area, do pop in to this very friendly pub and experience gourmet food at a reasonable price. You won't regret it!

Arriving here on a cold wet November evening was a very underwhelming experience as from the outside this place completely hides what's waiting for you inside. The bar was a cosy enough place for a typical country pub but the restaurant was a real surprise. I came here with a group friends for dinner one dark, blustery evening. It was my first visit. The bar was very busy - mainly locals enjoying a drink. There's a quieter restaurant area separate from the bar for a more formal meal. The menu comprised a good range meat and fish, and a few vegetarian options, all at very reasonable prices, and there was a decent wine list to match. Service was friendly and efficient. The quality of the food was exceptionally good - I had Cornish scallops to start, and a rare steak for the main course. The combination of a proper locals' pub with a high standard of cuisine serves this remote location well. I look forward to a repeat visit.

We visited as part of a family celebration for a birthday. From the outset the welcome and service was friendly, helpful and professional. The food was just superb clean plates all round - seafood, pates, steaks and duck. All delicious, beautifully cooked and really well presented. A great wine list too. The real pearl was the personal welcome, from the chef, that our 3 vegans received, having called ahead to let them know of food intolerances and allergies. He explained that he was cooking a bespoke meal for them rather than the usual run of the mill veggie fare. When it arrived it looked even more amazing than the other dishes from the menu. Bright colours and really interesting flavours - every plate was cleared. They were all equally impressed with the vegan desserts too. The other highlight was the attentiveness of the waiting staff. They couldn’t have been more attentive while not over bearing or ‘in your face’. Thank you all for a very lovely evening - it will live long in our memories and we’ll definitely be back!!

Visited for a family members birthday. I'm sure on previous visits (over a year ago) I was fairly limited with what I could have off of the menu. Having food allergies can make it a bit of a nightmare eating out. But I was pleasantly surprised when they said it was all cooked fresh so most dishes could be adapted to suit my needs. I had scallops to start and the monkfish special as a main. Which they happily adapted so there were no gluten or dairy containing ingredients. Made a welcome change for the venue to change the dish rather than me settling for something I can cook myself at home. An excellent place for those with more particular dietry needs. I will be sure to request we visit again! Thank you for being so accommodating and not judgemental.

We have visited this restaurant previously but if anything it was better than before. The menu had changed but I would defy anyone to not be able to find something that they would like on the menu. Plenty of fish dishes, plenty of meat dishes, small meals, large meals. Our choice was foe a hake dish with fresh veg, dressed crab, baked cod, fish chowder and a crab salad washed down with cider and wine. The meals were all served promptly and everything tasted fresh and it was all piping hot, Us ladies can always push down a sweet so we had a panacotta and a sticky toffee pudding which was served with a Pedro Ximenez ( a fig and date sherry). Took the in laws here for dinner- they are VERY picky- and it went down a treat. We had the fish, the lamb and the pork, sadly the venison was sold out. It was excellent. The staff are also fabulous, from the super barman as you walk in to the waiting staff. Reasonably priced too.

We enjoy the atmosphere of this pub and have done so for years. We did find though that, alhough the food is good, it is over rated and the prices have become too high. Pity.

Popped in for lunch en route to St Mawes. Very friendly service and 3 good meals: take, guinea fowl and an improvised vegetarian meal. Good beer from a local brewery. Would visit again. Pretty local village.

From the outside, this appears to be just an ordinary country pub. Walk inside to the bar and you immediately get a warm welcome from the friendly staff. We were shown through to a lovely restaurant and were served a beautiful meal ( duck for my wife and guinea fowl for me). All beautifully presented by the friendly staff. Highly recommended and we will certainly revisit next time we are in the area. Thank you .

Great service from the start, really warm welcome, lovely range of choice on the menu, with some mouthwatering specials, so much to choose from. Exquisite food, proper gastro pub/ high end restaurant food, attentive table service. So pleased to see the same owners are there and that the standards are still as high as previous visits. Thank you, we will be back.

We've eaten here a few times now and it's very good; beef, pork and seafood all cooked perfectly and vegetables are just right (maybe a little underdone for some). The desserts are beautiful-pavlova with strawberries and chocolate fondant with raspberries-there is care with the cooking and presentation.

Every time I go to the Rising Sun I'm blown away by the welcome ... & the food. There is always an enthusiastic welcome, which can't be a bad start! The food is excellent. We travel a fair distance for their crab sandwiches alone. I would rate them as the best I've ever had ... I know, a bold statement! But I challenge you to try for yourself (& see if I'm wrong! ).

Visited a couple of weeks ago for a Saturday lunch. First of all, plenty of parking. Lovely warm welcome as well. Chose a starter from the lunchtime menu, of scallops with crispy Parma ham and a main course from the specials board , a free range breast of chicken , served with a delectable sauce flavoured with Tarragon, puy lentils and a delicious selection of fresh vegetables, including small slices of fennel which really complimented the whole dish. This was one of the best plates of food I have ever tasted, so many layers of flavours it was perfection. My partner had a steak and ale pie - - a proper pie, delectable pastry top and bottom, crammed full of top quality meat. Believe me when I say, this chef knows his job. Desserts of a very good Pannacotta with poached rhubarb and just the right amount of wobble , homemade sticky toffee pudding and really good coffee. Great range of wines and real ales. Have booked again for Mothering Sunday. If, like me, you are someone who appreciates quality food, expertly prepared, cooked and presented in an atmosphere where you can relax, then go here. This place is a real find - - you will probably need to book.

We stopped to have lunch in this excellent country pub. We received a very warm welcome from the owners which was helped by the two log fires in the bar. Really lovely atmosphere in this unspoiled, traditional pub. We enjoyed a delicious home cooked looked which was washed down by a couple of pints of ale from the local brewery in the village. Will certainly be visiting again.

We've been coming to this part of North Cornwall for almost 26 years but had never been to Altarnun. We decided to take a chance on this inn because the reviews were good.

Visited for my fourth time and as good as ever. Always like to visit when I’m in the area and it never disappoints. Good food and drinks along with a nice family atmosphere and friendly staff.

My husband and I sought this pub out en route after a few days away. It was difficult to find because you had to go some way of of the village of Altarnum to find it - but ask a local! It is very easy to park as it truly is in the middle of the countryside. It has no frills and is a basic honest pub. But the blackboard (on this cold and miserable winter day) has some additional options to the menu and we had a very cheery barman!

Very good food, good atmosphere, great traditional pub. We did not like though a dog being allowed to lay on the bench (covered of material) next to the owner. The publicans should not have accepted this.

Found this delightful upstairs cafe by chance and had some of the best vegetarian food for a long time. We were made very welcome and chose the hummus bowl and roasted veg toasted sandwich. Both were excellent and very filling.

I've only ever called in for a beer but no complaints so far and staff are nice too. There's a big beer garden which is very useful for the kids and dogs.

The ice creams here are beautiful! Really generous portions and are very well presented. The customer service we received was outstanding, my daughter had a massive meltdown (ASD) and they were nothing but supportive, understanding and helpful. We'd had a very tough day today with meltdowns galore and this one was by far the worst of the day yet I never felt alone or judged. People like you make the biggest difference and I am so very grateful for you going out of your way to help and care. Thank you x
