We made a "reservation" via the web site enquiry facility. We were offered a choice of times. We replied with our selection. We arrived at the appointed time to be met by the owner saying that they had no record of our reservation and could do nothing for us because they only had food prepped for their expected guests, I showed him my email reply to which he said that he had never seen it and would talk to his IT people the next day! That was it. No empathy, no attempt to resolve the problem. We had to leave, organise transport and find a way to rescue a disastrous evening planned as a birthday celebration. Fortunately we found a restaurant that had food available and was flexible enough to serve customers at short notice. I don't know how good the food is at The Cross and won't ever attempt to find out. If you risk a reservation don't rely upon technology, nail it down.

Thoroughly enjoyed our evening at The Cross. Food was exceptional. Flawless presentation and flavours. We learnt a lot about wine pairing and with a gentle nudge we tried the dessert wines and were astonished at how good they were. Well done to the team. A well deserved AA 3 Rosette.

When phoning to make a reservation I don't expect to be spoken down to. I asked if there was availability on the following Tuesday or Wednesday evenings and was told no - fair enough. When asking if the Thursday could be available, I'm not sure responding with, "Well are you just going to keep asking for other days?" is a reasonable retort. More than happy to spend my money elsewhere with respectful establishments that aren't up themselves.

The Cross is a wee gem in the village of Kingussie. We had a truly lovely weekend staying here. From our arrival to departure everything was first class and Derek & Celia were the perfect hosts. The food was amazing, fantastic cooked breakfast with homemade marmalade and jam. The canapés before dinner, warm homemade bread rolls and the infusion of flavours throughout the meal made this a very memorable experience. Put The Cross on your list of “must visit “ places especially if you are a foodie. Great hikes nearby along with gentle walks directly from the front door. We certainly hope to go back.

Our evening meals were, simply put, superb and very impressive, particularly given the Covid environment we are all living in. I have done the Michelin Starred Restaurant experience on several occasions and know what excellence is; therefore I hope my comments are qualified. Each course was brilliantly thought through and faultless. My quail & foie gras starter on my second evening is without doubt the best Starter I have ever had. My Cheese Board was excellent but unfortunately crying out to be accompanied by a glass of wine or Port, but argh! Those damn Covid restrictions. Breakfast was also sublime, with a delightfully fragrant homemade marmalade. The best way to start your day. Every aspect of our dining experience was perfect and the Kitchen Brigade are to be highly praised for their passion and delivery. Truly memorable.

We had seafood, lamb, risotto, goat's cheese, and souffle. The menu is short but I would have been more than happy to eat anything from it. One of us was vegetarian and they had their own menu and loved their choices. There were also plenty of delicious extras - canapes, tasty rolls and a cauliflower soup amuse bouche. Service was courteous and friendly. Would recommend booking well in advance if you are non resident as the capacity of the restaurant is small and they have to keep tables for residents.

We had booked here a few months ago and , due to illness, had to cancel but we were delighted that they could add that night onto this two night (now three) New Year stay. The owners are very friendly and warmly welcomed us with coffee and shortbread beside the cosy log burner.Dinner , each night, offered a tasting menu which was absolutely delicious and every dish was well balanced and full of flavour. Their wine list was also well balanced and offered some quirky options , like the Moroccan red , which we enjoyed immensely . On auld years night we were treated to champagne on the balcony where all the residents enjoyed the Kingussie village fireworks show which was delightful and a real treat on a cold frosty evening where the clear skies allowed us an enviable view of the stars. What a way to bring in the new Year.We had looked at a few places to stay over New Year and all charged considerable premiums to do so. The Cross didn’t and they are to be commended for that. The room was cosy and comfortable but the highlight was the fine dining which we can not recommend highly enough.

A gorgeous restaurant built in a converted tweed mill. Dinner, presided over by the owners who were friendly, knowledgable but pleasantly relaxed, was sensational - as was the wine list. A great local beer to start off and then an amazing Sauvingnon blanc. The starters were fantastic- I started with scallops whilst Celia chose the duck taster plate both served with a range of sumptuous home baked breads We then had local lamb & venison. Both were the best meat dishes either of us had tasted this year. Although the portions weren't excessive, the food was so beautifully rich that neither of us had room for desert but the coffee excellent. We will definitely stop off and eat here again next time we are heading to the far north

When staying for one night at The Cross Kingussie we had a pleasurable aperitif with pre dinner snacks and opted for the 6 course tasting menu with wine flight accompaniment. The tasting plate of duck was an interesting dish to start with, this was followed by salmon gravadlax, with the main course being two cuts of perfectly cooked locally sourced lamb, and then the meal was finished off after the optional cheese course with two desserts. The meal was light enough and the standard of cookery was high. The service was polite and welcoming, with the front of house being the owners. Overall it was a nice meal in pleasant surroundings.

We had a really enjoyable one night stay in The Cross at Kingussie. The country cottage was situated in the beautiful Perthshire area, full of rich nature life that the area offers. The stone house is next to a river and we were surrounded by lush of trees and flowers resided by red squirrels and woodpeckers. The food was at least one Michelin star standard. Top notch. Room is decorated with tasteful country house style. Very cosy and yet epicurean. Look forward to revisiting.

We have nothing but praise for our meal at The Cross. There are different areas within the dining room giving an intimate feel. A two-way log fire provided heat and added to the delightful ambience. Tables were adequately separated and superbly set. The tasty amuse bouche of quail egg and two other delights on a wooden platter set the tone for the meal. This was followed by entrees of duck three ways and our mains of beef filet, potato, asparagus and vegetables. The serving was well spaced out. Dessert for one of us was a tasty chocolate fondant and for the other a sensational passionfruit souffle with mango sorbet. We also enjoyed a quality shiraz with our meal. Overall, our experience was everything we could have wished. Costly, yes, but well worthwhile.

We found the food to be very good but the service was average. The waiter brought out the incorrect wine, threw away my wife’s dinner after he was asked to box it up and we did not get our check for half an hour after we told him we were finished. This waiter might not have understood English very well but for the cost of the dinner, they should have staff that can understand how to communicate with their customer. Again, the food was very good but they need to work on their service. It was a full plate of the main course that was thrown away. When brought to the owner/manager’s attention, all we got was “Sorry”.

We had a fabulous dinner here. On our trip we ate at some of Scotland's top restaurants, but the Cross was the best. The food was magnificent -- from the complimentary potato soup, to the appetizers of red mullet and tuna and the salmon appetizer, and especially the lamb with shoulder cannelloni, to the mango soufflé and the peanut brittle desserts. The wine list was innovative -- we enjoyed a carignan that is hard to find. Scottish Caorunn gin and local Spey single malts, including the Fumare, were a delight. The dining room is beautiful, intimate, and relaxing, and the service (by the owner) was terrific. We also had breakfast here, which was outstanding, including famous butcher Mr. Gao's bacon and sausage and fresh squeezed orange juice. We stayed here, too, which makes a perfect combination -- see our review under "Hotels".

I have been eating at the cross for over 20 years and have seen three owners put there remarkable stamps on a truly wonderful hotel. A bit of a second home at one time, I hadn't visited for a while. Well, I have to say it still had that charm. The open fire, an attentive host and, most of all, wonderful food. The sea bass was totally melty-mouthy as was the trio of lamb. Puddings too, we pretty much back to the heady days of Becky's cooking. A delight once more and back to it's best. £70 including wine. Can't wait to go back.

We were served excellent food at this restaurant: we had the dinner menu at £55 per person, and the management had taken great care to create a menu that was suitable for a non-meat-eater (even printed it out for me). This was very welcome, and all the choices were tempting. Our choices were delicately cooked and were definitely fine cuisine, with lovely combinations of flavours. The bread basket was delicious (three or four kinds of breads) too and there were extra courses like a haddock soup that were additional and not charged for. The ambiance is calm, quiet, more like a front room than a busy restaurant. Good service too. Only quibble was that the wine was expensive to our mind, and that the coffee and petits fours, which was offered and which we accepted, were charged to us at an additional £10 - we hadn't been aware that was extra. It wasn't all about money, but it also kind of was, because we were booked in for B&B at £150 a night also. So overall, we felt they could have made a concession on the coffee!

A warm welcome and excellent service were as good as we remembered, but I'm afraid the quality of the food was poorer than it used to be. The "foams" lacked flavour or indeed point. The pre-dessert could have been delicious, but "plum crumble" served in small tall glasses meant spooning through the crumble and scooplet of ice cream to eventually reach the plum. A flatter dish would have been so much better.I don't think we will be returning.

Cannot rate this restaurant highly enough. We booked a couple of weeks before going and informed them I was egg and dairy free due to allergies, and I was delighted to be presented with a menu brimming with allergy friendly options. Had gravadlax followed by delicious coley dish which had a nod to the traditional chippy with mushy peas and pickled onions, only posh like. It was such a treat to be able to order a dessert for a change and had a soya milk pannacotta, which was lovely. One of the staff overheard it was our anniversary and we were presented with petit fours on a plate with "happy anniversary" written in chocolate. Staff were very friendly and the restaurant has a nice relaxed atmosphere. As for the food, it's of a very high standard and lunch was really quite reasonable for how good it was. We had many perfect meals at The Cross when it was run by Tony and Ruth Hadley in the eighties and nineties - both at the original venue in the High Street then nearby at the old tweed mill. Perhaps because of those very pleasant memories we never got round to eating there under subsequent proprietors. Last Friday we finally booked in for an evening meal with friends. It was snowing heavily - which was atmospheric. Pre-dinner drinks of (locally produced) gin and tonic with canapes were served by the log stove. All four of us opted for the £55 three-course menu. The very familiar restaurant was quiet - which was a surprise. The amuse-bouche of cured salmon, orange and horseradish cream was excellent. To start I had ballotine of fois gras with asparagus and shaved truffles. This was followed by lamb, then a dessert of rhubarb in various formats. I pinched a little of my friend's cheese. All of this was delicious and beautifully presented. Service was discrete and efficient. We chose a bottle of Gruner Veltliner at £28 and a Rioja at £33 both of which were excellent. I could not fault anything we ate or drank or the service. The only baffling thing was why the restaurant was so quiet on a Friday night. Perhaps mid April is between seasons. It certainly cannot be anything to do with the quality of the food or wine.

Having been invited for afternoon tea by a visiting aunt, we eagerly anticipated a lovely afternoon spent chatting over an array of delicious sandwiches and cakes. How disappointing - the waiter was welcoming and very accommodating, but that is more than can be said for the owners, who neither greeted us or asked how we were enjoying ourselves. Two small plates of sandwiches were laid out first ( egg, ham, ham and tomato and smoked salmon) , with six long, thin sandwiches on each one, which meant only two per person. On asking for another plate of egg sandwiches we were told there was no egg filling prepared!!!!!! Two cake stands were then brought forth with a selection of tiny scones, eclairs, raspberry tarts and some slices of cake - nice and fresh but not very exciting or enticing. Certainly not worth the £17 per person price tag, and all in all a disappointing experience. Will not rush back!

Visited for an afternoon tea with family. Food was nice and fresh, but certainly not worth what they charged! have had better in higher class city hotels and paid less. Problems were though that we asked for extra egg sandwiches and were told they couldn't provide more as had run out!! It doesn't take much time to boil an egg or two!! However the worst part of the visit was the staff, especially the woman owner who made us feel very unwelcome and as if we were an inconvenience!! Shame really as the food we had was nice, but just a typical Highland eatery, over priced to fleece the passing tourists!

We attended The Cross restaurant for my wife's 30th birthday (it also happened to be our honeymoon). We each had the tasting menu though due to driving and an ulcer neither of us could accompany it with the wine flight. The food? Outstanding. Canapes, Amuse Bouche, Duck, Fish, Lamb, Pre-Dessert, Dessert and Petit Fours meant that we enjoyed EIGHT courses of some of the most delicious food I have ever eaten. The meat was locally sourced and tasted divine. The monkfish was incredible but the fish veloute that accompanied it absolutely blew me away with its rich and creamy taste. The stand out course of the evening, however, must go to the pudding. Aerated chocolate, salted caramel ice cream with a toffee sauce and a rich chocolate slice. A pudding that would not go amiss in a michelin starred restaurant.

To celebrate a very special birthday, I booked dinner for two having seen the Good Food Guide entry. From the 'amuse bouches' to the petits fours the food was excellent and the service impeccable. In fact we came back for lunch a few days later and sat outside on the terrace overlooking the burn in glorious sunshine. Each dish was a work of art - both culinary and visually. We will be back and will spread the word - but only to a few :) !!

We had some friends staying with us who invited us to have dinner at The Cross with them. The cuisine was outstanding and the atmosphere was lovely. We had an extensive choice of wine which we all enjoyed. Many thanks for a very enjoyable evening. We would highly recommend this award winning restaurant. Superb restaurant just off the A9 at Kingussie. Extensive cellar, but I also enjoyed a pint or two of Cairngorm Gold during my stay. Friendly and attentive staff.

We visited The Cross when it was in the old post office in the main street many years ago, This was our first visit to The Cross in the old tweed mill. Everything about it was good. Location, bedrooms and, especially, the food. Very talented chefs in the kitchen provided a tasting menu that showed great skill. Matching wines were just right. Very helpful staff. Overall - excellent!

We saw this place was well rated and we were staying up the road at Greystones so this allowed a chance for our driver to enjoy a drink or two. The place is small and normally caters for guests only so they were a bit surprised when we rocked up in hiking gear at half five wanting a drink and to book a table. The price didn't put us off as it was for a 3 course meal and we are use to London prices. After a nice drink by the river we wandered back to our digs to change and returned for dinner. We were not disappointed! The 3 courses also included canapes and a celeriac soup with four different homemade breads, which was delicious and my favorite course! The food was exceptional, I had scallops, steak and souffle which were all superb. We enjoyed doing a whisky tasting with the guidance of Richard our waiter who was very knowledgeable and accommodating of us. If you are in the area I would highly recommend this place.

The food was fantastic, I chose a starter of scallops with pork and black pudding. The scallops were cooked to perfection and as soon as I touched the pork with my fork the meat just fell apart. I had venison for a main and cheesecake for a sweet.

Although I am not a great enthusiast of "haute cuisine" dining, my son had offered to take my wife and I to an Anniversary meal at the The Cross Restaurant during our annual trip to the Aviemore area. My wife is even less adventurous when choosing from any menu and tends to stick to plain and simple fare so she was quite disappointed when she could find nothing on their online menu that appealed to her very limited taste. However, not wishing to deny my son and I the opportunity to visit this establishment, we contacted them by email to enquire if the chef could possibly provide her with a simple soup, chicken and fresh fruit meal which she could enjoy whilst we sampled their normal menu. To their credit, The Cross responded that this would present no problem whatsoever and so we went ahead and booked a table. On arrival, we found that we were the only part dining that evening and we had the premises to ourselves. The proprietor was most attentive and the Hungarian "Maitre d" (Richard by name) was extremely chatty and helpful throughout the evening. We were provided with a couple of extra "courses" in addition to our selected 3-course choice and found them all to be extremely tasty and beautifully prepared and presented. The chef had even gone to the trouble of adding a "Happy Anniversary" message in chocolate on our sweet plates - a most thoughtful touch.During the course of our meal, my son was discussing the Hungarian Desert Wine Tokaji with Richard, who was most knowledgeable about the wine, its history and the various qualities available. On learning that they also stocked this wine, my son had no hesitation in ordering a bottle - apparently they have it in stock at the request of a regular visitor from the United Arab Emirates. We all greatly enjoyed our meals and, although it was substantially more expensive than our normal dining-out budget, it was well worth it for such a memorable celebratory meal. I would certainly recommend it to anyone as a special treat.

We have not visited The Cross in over 4 years having had a bad dining experience with the previous owners we were thrilled with our visit today. Our visit was based on a number of reviews in national newspapers but we were still concerned as to what we would find. As semi-locals we should not have worried, from the moment we entered to the moment we left the whole experience was exceptional. This could have been due to the fact we were the only two diners for lunch, the other parties having cancelled due to the bad weather but their loss was our gain. All three courses were of a very high standard, unfortunately I had to share each course with my wife but similarly fortunately she had to share with me. I would have to concur with the very positive reviews we have read about this establishment and would have given this 5 out of 5 if the coffee had been freshly made rather than from a machine and some petit four had been served with the coffee but this is really being picky. Would we go back - absolutely and hopefully with our group of friends over New Year.

We've been meaning to return to The Cross since our last visit which we think is nearly 10 years ago, enjoyed it then and thoroughly enjoyed it this time as well. New owners who have been there two years and clearly involve themselves in every part of the business as to be honest they both looked exhausted as we guess it is coming to the end of a long season. We felt awfully sorry for the wife who had a terrible cough and clearly should have been sat in front of the tv with a cup of tea and her feet up so perhaps another member of staff on a Saturday night would have been a good idea. All that aside the food was lovely. We opted for the 3 course £55 A la Carte menu - great choices although we both ended up eating the same thing which meant we didnt get to taste another dish (I blame my husband for that!). The wine list was 'safe' but extensive with something for everyone and the Beaujolais we chose was lovely. A lot of reviews have discussed how expensive the meal is, in our experience a 2 AA Rosette restaurant is very similar in price and as the food quality was of such a high standard we did not feel that they over charged. Our only gripe and this is a very divisive point as some people like this, was there was no music. Absolutely silent. Which meant it felt like we were talking in whispers to each other because other diners would have heard every word of our conversation otherwise. We will be back, probably only for special occasions as whilst we feel it is good value for money it is at the high end of our spend range and so has to be reserved for special nights out.

We booked dinner some time back for the Thunder through the Glen weekend and took the tasting menu. I have to say the food was very good but extremely small portions and whether up to the levels of celebrity cooking which is where they are pricing , I'm not so sure. We also took the recomended wine by the course, again, a single 100ml glass per course is not very complementry. Not a lot of atmosphere either, very much aimed at getting your cash!!

Not cheap but the food, presentation and service in such a lovely setting make this worth every penny. Only wish that we could have booked again for October. Just hope it's not outside the UK by then! Our family has children who are now virtually all adults. Not one for small children I would guess. Great for a romantic or goody meal.

We decided to stay at this "restaurant with rooms" as it is described, as we had read rave reviews about the restaurant. We were definitely not disappointed! It's really a small family hotel with a superb restaurant. The whole team are welcoming and very friendly, the rooms are beautiful (our overlooked the river, which was in full spate at the time due to heavy rains a couple of days before our visit) and the restaurant has a lovely ambiance (I disagree with another reviewer who would like background music - it doesn't need it at all!), the food was fantastic and the wine list and choice of malts really excellent. It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for! I would definitely go back for seconds!

Stayed for 2 nights for D, B & B and we were very impressed by the hosts, our room (4) was excellent with a small balcony overlooking the river and the food was really top rate. A very good team and the whole experience was seamless. Perhaps some low background music in the dining room would add to the ambiance. We will definitely be back!

We were staying at The Cross and ate in the restaurant on first night. The food was excellent. The young head chef certainly knows how to bring some interesting ingredients together. The service was also attentive without being intrusive. The ONLY negative is the atmosphere. There is no music or background noise, which can make for very quiet silences. Luckily a table of 5 eventually sat next to us which built up the atmosphere. Overall though I highly recommend this eatery.

We know the Tongue area very well, and like to eat locally, so it was obvious we would decide to eat at the Craggan, and i'm happy we did! The restaurant area is welcoming and clean, staff friendly, and the car park was easy even with a big van. The only problem was choosing from the menu! So many tasty things - i wish we had more time to visit again.. All three of us enjoyed our food, and we shared everything so i know it was all delicious. Thank you for making a rather wet evening so special..

This was a lovely experience, the food was not ' swimming in grease' as i saw from another review, but it was great to see that the more recent reviews have been validated. We went here for my birthday at the end of october and honestly everything was really lovely . the service was great they were so friendly from the getgo, the charcuterie board we had for starter was very filling and diverse just wish they would have told us what the cheeses were ( i think the brie was from tain though it was familair) but thats a minor niggle that we had no info. the main courses were fab the skin on chips were AMAZING , and its a dog friendly place which we loved , we dont have dogs but we did get to pet some which made our day !
