The Refreshment Rooms in Wirral

On the night in question when we visited mid-week, it wasn’t too busy and we were seated at our reservation table for 8 straight away. It did not take long for menus to be distributed at our table and drink orders taken. After a short while a server came to take our food orders, some from the over 60’s menu and some for the burger night offer. Half of our party were eating from the over 60’s menu which does say portion sizes are smaller to accommodate their shrinking appetite, although one or two in the party I think were slightly disappointed with their main offerings and if visiting again would opt for the standard menu. Food was very well presented and tasty, I ordered an extra burger patty and glad I did really, as it came with a small portion of skinny fries and nicely presented though small salad. I did enjoy it all, tastes were good and shared a dessert but for what we spent I think I would like to have been slightly fuller as were one or two others. On average we spent £25 each with one drink. Atmosphere is really good and the outside space looks great, this is bit of a hidden gem, slightly pricey but worth the visit.

Stumbled upon you via a Google search and your reviews and WOW… Friendly efficient service, Amazing food (Sunday roast Trio), easy parking and sat in the spacious garden, which has good amount of tables; in and out of the sun. Did we need desserts… no!!… but we couldn’t leave without trying some!! You can tell how much pride and care a restaurant takes just by walking in to the men’s toilets… immaculate!!!! Very impressed with the Refreshment Rooms. It's a big venue serving an extensive menu of hearty and delicious food - Fish and Chips, Burgers, Roasts, Scouse, Pies etc. There is also a lighter bites section of the menu. The food was excellent and service was great too. There's also a beer garden / plenty of outdoor seating.

Always brilliant food, value for money, great atmosphere for any event and also families.

Absolutely love this place. Been a few times now for special occasions, catch ups, just because or for a pick me up because the food is amazing (salt and vinegar sauce is to die for), service is on point - just enough without being too much and the Aperol is always great 😂. It has gorgeous views across to Liverpool, and despite being busy, you never feel rushed. Absolute gem of a place, can’t recommend enough.

A great find for Saturday lunch on a sunny afternoon. An extensive menu. We chose a light bite cheese & leek tart with new pots and salad garnish fig chutney, which was tasty. The pulled bbq pork bagel with fries and slaw was delicious. Great efficient friendly service. We will return.

Food was nice and staff were friendly and attentive. The food was a little more expensive than I was expecting but it often is these days and this was made up for in part by the portion sizes being very generous! Overall we had a lovely meal.

Brilliant place for a date night. Although be prepared to spend a fair bit as its all fresh. Had cesar salads me and my partner enjoyed them. Can't say about atmosphere as we went early in the day we had the garden to ourselves with our dog.

Absolutely perfect as usual won’t go anywhere else Best scouce ever Fish cakes are somthing else except one thing that’s been bugging me and makes me hesitate on ordering hoping this review changes it but , everytime I come and get the shoulder of lamb I change the chips to mash because who wants chips with lamb… but the veg is always inedible as it’s al dante but needs a little longer because it’s literally inedible as it’s that hard last theee times been the same otherwise perfect Also the portabella mushrooms are amazing but hesitant again as it’s served with half a toasted muffin wich Ishy the best, Much rather a sour dough or ciabatta of some sort,

Sat outside (lot's of space), service really quick. Had the Scouse, rich and tasty - a hidden gem!

Very average food, cheap ingredients and very overpriced for the quality of food, staff were very nice but the food was disappointing, frozen chips and soggy salads, not sure who rates them but the food was disappointing

Great food - so much so that every forkful was exquisite in quality, cheffing and taste. Sunday lunch is so good we invited London guests to travel from our place in Liverpool city centre

We had tea here before catching the overnight ferry to Belfast. It was about a 10 minute drive from the ferry port. Would really recommend for anyone looking for somewhere to eat before the boat. Staff were very friendly, menu was wide ranging and food tasty.

My family had a very enjoyable late lunch today and the food was just amazing. It's a lovely, relaxed environment with great staff and don't forget to check the specials ... The venison today was the best thing I've had in quite a while. We had three courses with wine and a beer so don't be put off by my price per head. It's most definitely value for money and my granddaughter said they have the "very best chocolate ice cream in the world" ... From Parkgate of course 😋

Comfortable place with a nice view of the Mersey from the bench across the road. Great service - we ordered and then went outside to watch the sunset - the waiter came to inform us a minute before our food was due to be served, so that the food wouldn't get cold. Roast trio of meat consisted of a generous amount of food, all well executed (pork with crispy crackling and tender beef, though I preferred the lamb)- Yorkshire puddings were the crispiest ever! My first time trying scouse, which was like a hearty lamb stew. Would revisit.

Great staff and great food as always

Been to the RR a few times before - this time had sister in law and husband up from London. They were amazed at the place as an ideal end to a walk through the Port Sunlight River Park. And THEN the food. WOW. Every thing that could have been done to the massive meal to make it perfect was there in front oh you. Belly pork roast Roast carrots and parsnips perfect. Swede and turnip mash perfect Gravy out of the planet. Roast potatoes perfect. Meat, Yorkshire pudding and the greens all without a shadow, perfect. The greens were easily seen not to be from frozen and were cooked to perfection. How they managed to get the food steaming hot and in front of you so well in all respects - amazing. No need for starters or desserts as stuffed on the main. Well done Liam the maitre d’ ( I think) Well done the staff who were always on call and anticipating future needs. Perfect Jim Murray

Looking for something different, where the food is fantastic, but not stupidly expensive? Try this place. Menu is an eclectic mix, with something for everyone. Staff are so friendly, and happy to help. Already planning our return.

The staffs were warm, friendly and professional. The food was reasonably priced, delicious and hearty with a wide variety of choices. The atmosphere was epic. Nicely furnished with decors that speak of the city's seafaring heritage. Overlooking River Mersey and the Liverpool docks, it was easy to imagine a time when sailors and dock workers would gather to celebrate a successful return from The New World with incredible bounties and loots.

Used to be good a few years ago but sorry the fish and chips now are of less quality, too oily and chips dry and oily too.

Always had lovely food,but sorry to post this but the seafood linguini was awful couldn't eat it as it was tasteless

Went for a birthday meal, food was superb, service excellent & speedy, never been before but we will definitely be back, Fabulous 😍 only downer was the parking as dad is severely sight impaired & uneven ground where we parked.

Always good food and nice atmosphere. Regular customer for this reason. Returned fries that were not too hot once but this was quickly taken care of with no fuss. This will always be my go to place for amazing food.

Fantastic restaurant serving great food

Was given a bill with loads of food added on, then they took stuff off and still charged me £8.50 for fries!! CHECK YOUR BILL! It’s too late for me as I checked properly in the car on the way home so can’t rectify it but I wonder how many other people they’ve done this to!

My dad grew up in the Rock Ferry area and used to come here in the early 1960s with his family. We came today from the Midlands as we knew he loved the place! The food, service and location were amazing. Try the BBQ brisket pie, it’s exceptional. The fish and Sunday roasts also looked great and the desserts huge! Love the history of the area and the building decorating the walls. Definitely recommend 😊

Although very nice, the tiniest sausages, for the price could do with bigger sausages. Loved bacon as crispy and not floppy like other places. Need to ask what toast you want rather bring different types as sometimes a waste because of peoples preferences. Just disappointed in the sausages. Appearance on arrival of the outside, could do with an upgrade.

Just had a lovely meal with my family .Food was excellent. Plenty to chose from the menu. Service was excellent aswell . The manager also donated a voucher for my coffee morning in aid of breast cancer .

Always good - great food and great staff. The whole place is so efficient. A very full lunchtime - glad I booked - and the food arrived in a perfect time frame. The prices have certainly risen but that seems to be the state of things. The problem for me is I now eat out less! I always think it is a strange place for a restaurant but it works well - you can tell it is good by the number of people there !!

For the quality of food we felt it was overpriced. I got the 8oz burger which was ok, not great. Someone by us got the fish which did look really big and much better value for money. Depending where you sit you can see the mersey, a wooden fence or a carpark so maybe ask for the room the bar is in. Wouldn't return out of choice.

Situated in a quiet area by an abandoned port. In Rockferry. The place wasn't that busy. Staff fairly friendly. I got fish and chips. The fish was a bit brown and over cooked causing the batter to taste bitter. The chips wear very chunky, and they were the frozen variety, which meant they weren't crispy. The meal was edible though. Very pricey. May go again but would need to save up.

Fell upon this gem as we were searching for breakfast in an area we were unfamiliar with. Googled places near to eat and it popped up, we would never have found it without maps as it's tucked away in what looks like a dead end. We were greeted by a lovely man showed to a table and given coffee and the tea in a fab tea pot which provided nearly 3 cups! I had eggs royal and hubby had full English, it's was probably one of the best breakfasts we've had. We live quite a distance but are planning to go back and try the afternoon menu when we we can. They also accept well behaved dogs. We'll worth a visit. 10/10 excellent.

I had my 70th birthday celebration at the refreshment rooms and everything was amazing. The food was out of this world and enjoyed by all 23 guests! Well done and thank you so much.

Always a delight to eat here, was my local pub when I was young, so many good memories to be had😀

What a gem! The food was amazing. We all loved our dinners and desserts. Arrived over an hour before our booking but they managed to fit us in. Really lovely staff and blown away by the food. Will definitely be returning to try more dishes.

Great food and fantastic service

A very happy and comfy place. Been a couple of times and have been impressed by the choice on the menu. Not that I need. Menu since the couple of occasions I have been, it has been the Scouse that has been on my plate. Very nice and served with red cabbage and crusty bread. Give it ago looking over the Mersey estuary is a bonus.

Been here 3 times so far and always make it a point to visit every time we're in the area. Everything is perfection, from fish and chips to Sunday dinners to BBQ brisket, jalapeño, cheese and pickle pie! The sauces and gravies are like nowhere else--get the salt and vinegar sauce with EVERYTHING, it's delicious and not to be missed. The staff are friendly and service is excellent, but it still manages to feel like a very casual place-- it's not stuffy or pretentious in the slightest. Favourite place ever to get lunch and then have a little walk.

Today I visited the Refrehment Rooms for the first time. For a friends 60th birthday meal with his extended family members. In the company of strangers. Friends of friends. In public houses & at football games. I'd heard about the venue and variety of meals provided. Unfortunately on those occasions there was a mixed or negative response. So it is lovely to be able to leave this positive message for everyone concerned at the Refreshment Rooms. Also for potential new visitors & customers unaware of the establishment. From Rosie welcoming us all on our arrival. To the excellent customer service provided for our food & drinks throughout our stay. From the waitresses Katy & Lauren. Everything was excellent. The meals were all very fulsome & devoured by everyone! You are always the best judge of Anything! Anywhere! Or Anyone! From personally visiting or experiencing. Definitely visit if in any doubt!! I have been to refreshment rooms many times and never been disssapointed with staff atmosphere and food incredible but tonight I had pulled brisket jalapeño cheese pie taste absolutely brilliant but filling was just covered bottom of pie and was chunks rather than pulled and no trace of cheese sweet potatoes where absolutely delicious first time I've been disssapointed but will go back again because I love the place 😋

Always excellent food and service. I have been here a lot and on a few occasions, for big group bookings of 20+. They didn't request pre-orders and everyone got what they ordered quickly and it was all piping hot. I don't know how they do it! All the staff are friendly and seem happy in their work.

Just got back from a family meal for my Brothers birthday. There were 24 of us, and we were very well looked after. Every person enjoyed a variety of meals and we will, of course, be back again soon.

Perfect lunch for a delayed Father's day! TU- worth every penny! There again a few more times. We never take photos because we are too busy tucking in! Food is great here. This time we had scouse, and steak pies, lemon trifle, vegan tart, ice cream, sticky toffee pudding, pavlova. All excellent. Tu once again. A family and friends favourite . The dog was welcomed into to "dog room " and was brought a bowl of water! Combined with a walk along Rock Ferry promenade and a walk through historic Rock Park we enjoyed a lovely day. Thank youxx November 2023 Had cocacola sticky ribs- superb but I did need my son to finish them for me. A very generous portion. Best onion rings in Merseyside! Snickers eton mess was great. TU once again for a very enjoyable experience with top class food and attentive friendly service. Those with me enjoyed vg fish and chips and lasagna. Thankyou so much😍 Latest trip on January 15th 2025 clutching our voucher for one free main given to us before Christmas. Always feel a bit awkward with free main course vouchers but there was no problem handing it in when paying the bill. This time we both enjoyed the fantastic lasagne- as good as any top notch Italian ! Served with a marvellous leaf salad and focaccia garlic bread. We also ordered a portion of the best onion rings we've ever tasted. All freshly cooked For afters we couldn't resist the mandarin trifle and toblerone Pavlova! TU very much for a fantastic meal. Group of eight for Sunday lunch. The place was very busy but the staff handled it well. Food was delicious and large portions.

Cannot fault this place! We went for lunch and had the mussels, scouse and the soup. Everything was absolutely delicious! The staff are lovely! Really friendly and attentive. Easy online booking system with a quick response.

We have always rated the Refreshment Rooms highly and recommended it to many of our friends. Last New Year's Eve we enjoyed Sunday lunch here which was perfectly proportioned, piping hot and delicious! This New Year's Eve we booked again for lunch and as it was midweek my dishes were selected from the Seniors Menu and were fine. However my husband thought he would take a break from meat and opted for the Vegan Roast. When it arrived, half the plate consisted of a huge pile of unappetizing sprouts and kale, served alongside 4 roast potatoes. The Vegan Roast itself was smaller than the smallest roast potato, and was made up of a small amount of mashed sweet potato and raisins - not a substantial main dish at all and a total rip-off for the price. My son had the pot roast lamb which was served with yet another pile of sprouts and kale (was the restaurant just using up vegetables leftover from Christmas?!) and a few undercooked chips. We did complain about the Vegan Roast to the waitress who said she would give our feedback to the chef and we were hoping for some recompense - a free dessert or coffee perhaps - but none was forthcoming hence this negative reviews.

We called in as a party of three for lunch on Boxing Day. As this is a popular Venice we had booked a table in advance. As we knew that they served generous portions, we did not chose a starter. Between us we ordered one portion of sticky ribs with fries and coleslaw, o d shoulder of lamb with fries and mixed vegetables plus one sous-vide duck breast with spiced cherry brandy sauce and dauphinoise potatoes. The service was speedy and all the dishes were very tasty and large! No room for dessert. Together with a round of drinks the bill came to just over £90, so £100 with a tip. We considered this good value for money. Well worth a visit.

Food was excellent. Restaurant was on the busy side so meant a little slow, but the staff were great and very friendly. The room we were in was exceptionally warm, but that's only a minor point against a really great experience.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to the Refreshment Rooms Official for their support during this time. Kev had booked a Christmas meal for his family on the 7th December, 30 of us and we'd saved up £1000 towards it throughout the year. Everytime we went in we had a meal ourselves, unfortunately i had to phone them on the 2nd to say he passed away. We had booked the private back room in Jan 24 so been planned for 11 months, I fully expected them to take some money off for short notice but without hesitation they send me all our savings back! I think it needs to recognised how amazing they where ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Breakfast with Father Christmas was brilliant. A perfect Father Christmas who made my children's day, and the usual amazing Breakfast from the Refreshment rooms. Always very accommodating including serving our food separately to allow us to look after our son.

Lovely welcome to the restraunt All the food throughout the service was lovely and no complaints at all The only issue was the chap in charge of our tables, who seemed reluctant to want to be there or ask us for any more drinks, clear any plates or glasses throughout service. After an hour of plates on the table, another person who could've been the chef came in to take our desert order he looked and stilled ignored the two fully full tabels and focused on the other table. When he eventually came with one desert at a time, he plonked it on the table and walked away. When he came back with the manager (I assme) helping with the deserts, she looked rather annoyed to see all the plates, no clean spoons for the meal. Overall lovely place, food but annoying that the service could've been more slick.

Lamb roast dinner was perfectly cooked. Trifle is the best I've ever had, just need a nice fruit crumble and custard option for the colder months ☺️

Lovely place with a good, varied menu. As others have said, prices are more expensive than some places but the food is of high quality with a focus on local produce . I started with the charcuterie board then a fabulous steak and ale pie with chips. We were there for a family meal. The staff were friendly, attentive and great with the young kids. Good beer garden for warmer days. Nice walk along the waterfront too afterwards. Revisited for a Christmas evening meal (turkey obviously) Lovely food though maybe needed more gravy (we are up north after all!) Again, good, friendly service

Staff are lovely and the food is DELICIOUS!!!! Being vegan I am always a bit unsure about new places to eat, but this place does fantastic vegan food. I will definitely be going again. The meals are big and the price is good too. Many thanks to all who work there.
