The Red Pig. We loved the food, friendly banter and atmosphere when we visited at the weekend. We live in Nottinghamshire and after discovering this little gem a few years ago, it’s always a must for a return visit. If you’re looking for a quirky, fun and unique place to eat whilst in the area of Pett Level and Winchelsea beach, you seriously need to check out this place. Look out for bright red and cream converted Mercedes horse box lorry…..with an unmissable great big red pig outside! It’s parked in a large lay-by with lots of free parking, outdoor tables and benches. There is also limited seating inside the lorry. The views of the marsh are spectacular and are the perfect backdrop as you dine. Cross the road and you’re straight onto the beach. There is a small menu with the emphasis on quality (always a good sign in my book). We opted for a Pett Leveller, which consists of a large, good quality pork sausage, served in a bread roll with onions, homemade coleslaw and pickled gherkins. All the food is freshly prepared to order so you may have a few minutes wait. There is always a vegetarian option and be prepared to be tempted by a good selection of delicious homemade cakes. We had coffee, which was freshly ground and served just the way we like it. Andy, the proprietor is a larger than life character! The banter and laughter was in plentiful supply and we also chatted to fellow diners. Assistants Dylan and Jamie were friendly and eager to help. Dogs are made very welcome and it was nice to see so many people enjoying the chilled and friendly atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back. What3words location ///cowboys.musically.ritual

It had been pouring with rain. The beach was empty bar a few perverse stragglers and we were hungry and exasperated after a two and half hour drive in dreadful weather. And then we came across The Red Pig, a brilliant eccentric gem. The exterior seating (bench tables) was drenched and the COVID-19 rules made a normal eating experience awkward but the menu changed our mood entirely. A mixture of to die for sausage in a roll (generous portions and super tasty), haloumi and other delicious options made a return visit at some stage in our lives essential if we are ever near Hastings again. Make the detour. The beach is amazing but the Red Pig is unique. And their coffee - the best cafe coffee we have ever tasted and that is saying something.

What a great idea! Build an actual size pig, paint it red and plant it on the beach to grab the attention of hungry beachcombers! A vehicle big enough to house a substantial kitchen and tables and benches with outdoor picnic tables to accomodate the masses and you've got it made! List your top 3 choices; keeping it simple, on the blackboard and watch them come! Chicken Sharwarma, Pork Sausage on a bun and Fried Halumi with Quinoa and veggies, were the choices of the day when we arrived at noon! The outdor tables were already full so we opted to sit inside the cute little bus and have lunch. My husband and I had the fresh Chicken Shawarma on pita bread and our friend had the Halumi! The Shawarma was savoury and hot, unlike anything we'd ever tasted! Apparently it was quite different than the Shawarma the day before! The owner and chef was a real character, amiable and chatty. The fried Halumi was a taste delight too with tender pieces of cheese, crunchy veggies, pickled onions on a bed of quinoa. We were amazed that food this good could be found in a food wagon! Thank Goodness we weren't out for a quick swim that day!

Don't often stop on a solo ride but this little van has been on my radar for a while and is very convenient for cyclists alike... In addition to the fantastic sausage, cake and coffee, the owner(?) wanted me to take away an energy bar (more cake = D) he'd been working on?! Pulled up here as fancied a bacon sandwich only to be told that this was not on their menue. Now this is a simple food wagon on the side of the road with great views as your eating which is nice. But not to supply a bacon sandwich is very strange for this type of pull in roadside cafe. They seem to be selling only very healthy types of food at exorbitant prices. Nothing wrong with the quality of the food, it's great. But roadside pull ins usually provide things like bacon, sausage, egg butties and the like, so no I don't like its menue and I'll give it a miss. I was also given a lecture on how bad having bacon is. Yes I know all about this but all the same, I wanted a bacon sandwich.

This is no ordinary layby cafe....Andy and Sharon know about food, flavours and ingredients, and boy can they cook. The menu is tight, not too much choice, yet very tasty. Pick any of the dishes and you'll be eating local fresh ingredients, carefully prepared. On a sunny afternoon last month, when I cycled along the coast road towards Hastings, my lunchtime treat was smashed avocado on sough dough with a spicy dressing. Bakewell tart (home-made by Sharon, who bakes all the cakes) and a really good espresso (Monmouth Coffee me thinks) was a treat that I told myself I would work off as I would be cycling back into the winds that day. Well that was my excuse, and I'm sticking to it

I had heard lots of good things about the Red Pig but our experience was dreadful. We ordered inside and received our drinks and our daughter's plain bread rolls very quickly but our food just didn't appear. We saw other people who arrived after us receive their sausage sandwiches but not us. After waiting for over 30 mins we then overheard that they'd got confused but they didn't come and apologise we saw a fresh batch of sausages go on the grill which were obviously going to take time to cook so we gave up and asked for the bill. To add insult to injury they charged us £2 each for the 2 plain bread rolls my daughter had. I have never had to pay that before anywhere maybe 50p. £10.50 is very expensive for 2 teas, a coffee and 2 bread rolls! We won't be back!

We wasn't going to have anything else but another couple came in and had cake and we thought it would be rude not to indulge.... Andy was a very charming and friendly guy along with the rest of the staff. The coffee was amazing and certainly some of the best I've had in the area! The mighty Pett Leveller was just what the doctor ordered. A lovely spicy and herby sausage in a lovely bun with amazing coleslaw and pickled gherkins. The place felt friendly and comfy and we didn't want to leave. We ordered our dog a sausage and they even cut it up and put it in a bowl for her. Certainly worth a visit and will definitely be returning!!

Having stopped in on a very wet and windy day it was a great to sit in and look out the windows whilst eating amazing homemade beans and soda bread toast, accompanied by a proper coffee. The Pett Leveler and cake looked great as well.Homely, hearty food done right by a welcoming and friendly owner. A definite recommend from me.

Great roadside eating place. Opposite the beach. Limited seating inside quirky self-build caravan, so better for a dry day. BBQ sausage roll (Pett Leveller) is one of the best I've had. Reliably informed the Meatballs are also very good. Will definitely return.

Well, where do I begin, fantastic sea front location with a few sheep thrown in, fabulous real homemade food, from pulled pork, Spanish meatballs, the famous"pett leveller" sausage to the wonderful selection of truly gorgeous home made cakes and brownies. A true delight and served by " unique" friendly staff, thankyou for the experience, I nearly forgot the amazing sherperds hut in which you seat to eat your food !!!!!! Xxxxxxx

Visited again today as we were in the area. Had the Pett Leveller and Bagels today. Really tasty. Only regret is that this place is so far from where we live in Kent. Right opposite the beach, easy to park, and although a limited menu in food supplied the quality of it is excellent.

We drove past and were intrigued. On the way back from Rye we stopped! What a surprise this unassuming looking roadside cafe sells the most tasty pulled pork rolls we've ever had. We're going back for the sausages!

A lovely little pit stop on our walk from Stream House B&B to Rye, lovely family owners who like a good chat - only had coffee so can't comment on the food.

Really fresh tasty fish, cooked to order, always piping hot, always good sized portions and the staff are lovely too.

Go through the dowdy antique shop frontage into the tiny, almost cramped room behind and prepare for a treat. We three all picked the all day breakfast; proper bacon, real butcher's sausages and all the trimmings. At around £6, with coffee refills, we couldn't have been happier!
