I ordered the liver and Bacon, the meal was incredibly bland and the liver itself was practically raw - more grizzle then anything else. I have been here twice and was disappointed by the food both times. Won't be coming back.

I stayed here for an overnight stay whilst visiting a local business. Never again. The rooms are awfull. Paint peeling off the wall. Dirty mirror, toilet, window, shower screen, cups and dust all over the room. The small TV didn't work and the staff didn't want to deal with it. A real take your money and run outfit. I had ham, egg and chips for dinner. It was okay.

Not a bad pub in the middle of the village. Food came quickly after ordering. Roast beef with the trimmings. Large serving but not the most flavourful I’ve ever had. Large areas inside as well if the weather is poor. Probably would visit again.

We popped in for a quick lunch and ordered a tomato bruschetta off the specials menu and a gammon & mustard ciabatta. Both meals were poor. Bruschetta is so easy to make as its literally onions and tomatoes on bread but this was so bad I left half of it. Instead of sourdough toast as advertised, they'd stuck a measly amount of tasteless tomato and onion on some dry chunks of ciabatta - they hadnt even toasted it. There was no seasoning, no garlic oil or basil, no balsamic vinegar. Nothing. It was awful. Like other reviewers have said they bulked it out by sticking a load of undressed rocket on the plate. Such a waste of money and so lazy. The gammon ciabatta was made with the same dry bread, no butter, and the tiniest bit of gammon or ham. For £8 or £9 each I expected better! They're both things that are so easy to get right even if you're not a chef! We were in a rush so didn't complain or make a fuss however we will not ever be eating there again. Avoid if you want decent food.

Dropped in on a whim and unfortunately a recommendation. Really simple. We ordered two bacon cheese burgers as these seemed to be a safe option wherever you go. First mistake was to make the assumption of a safe option. They came out 30 minutes after ordering, one can only assume the cook took a break once he put them on and forgot their existence as the level of the cremation would have made John Leonard Orr proud. I can’t comment on the rest of the menu as I have not tried it and there is every chance that the cook was having a bad day. There was an offer of a replacement but we did not have the time to wait for it as had to be elsewhere. On a positive, the beer was good. Wish you the best for the future. X

A group of us were at the Red Lyon Pub in Slinfold yesterday. We sat down in a chilly Pub, at a large old worn out table from the 1900s, into amazingly uncomfortable chairs. Even the plump cushions seem to make them more uncomfortable. The bustling barman gave us some good news, After the Burns Night the previous evening, there were 3 portions of Cullen Skink left over. Two of us opted for that. Others mostly ordered various sandwiches. One of us a Cumberland sausage and mash and veg dinner. Eventually, a bowl of Broccoli soup turned up for one lady, but which was cold, so had to go back. Later two more soups turned up and some sandwiches. The soups were gloupy, and completely tasteless. There was not a glimmer of any smoked haddock, or any seasoning at all. It was just a grey tasteless mess, probably potato and onion. I then had some what was described on the menu as ‘Classic Welsh Rarebit, with cheddar cheese sauce with stout and mustard, on sourdough toast served with roasted tomatoes.’ What a joke! Four thin slices of toast appeared with smears of a gritty yellow stuff, masquerading as a cheese sauce, and one barely ripe tomato cut in half. It was tasteless and inedible, at £9.50. Other peoples’ sandwiches looked to have zero butter on them, just with mustard smeared on the toasted bread with ham and other fillings. A good lot of rocket filled spaces on the plates. One diner had the Cumberland sausage and mash offering with tiny thin sausages that bore no resemblance to Cumberland sausages at all. We were affronted by the presentation of such awful food to us.

Had lunch with friends here yesterday. My soup was warm , not hot, and what bread there was, it was dry. My husbands gammon sandwich was ham, with no butter. He did complain afterwards. Our other friends were not happy either, but not sure if they complained at the time. However, when you are with friends, enjoying a convivial, time, to complain puts a damper on the atmosphere. The ladies toilet needed a good spring clean everywhere. We now understand why the pub was virtually empty on what should’ve been a busy Friday lunchtime. With the high prices we had to pay, we felt it was definitely not value for money and will not be eating there again.

Lovely Sunday family birthday lunch. 10 of us booked in for lunch & we were seated in the King Room which is just off to one side of the bar. Great space & nicely decorated for Xmas. Roast lunch was excellent - good choice & a few other options too (fish & chips, pies). A few desserts were consumed as well - the rhubarb crumble being voted the best! A lovely touch was the landlady (I think) asking the carol singers & musicians to play happy birthday- thank you

We moved into Slinfold in January of this year, and have to say we cannot be more pleased that this is our new local. It’s now August and have been there as many times as we can with our young family. The staff and management are amazing. Sav, the manager helped us arrange a brilliant apres charity cycle event for 30 of our family and friends with food. The charity event was in aid of our daughter who has been battling leukaemia for the past 2 years. Sav did a fantastic job accommodating all of us including those with allergies. There is a large garden with a lovely covered area which is ideal for the English weather. There is a grassed area with tables and a playing area for children. This has been my local for over 4 years and, despite the difficult times, I don't think it has been in better shape, There have been new owners since last October and the team have done wonders despite lockdown They keep strictly to the rules - which sadly means plastic glasses outside and dogs being kept on leads. But there is a choice of 3 beers on hand pump and generally they are kept in very good nick. The food is also much improved over the last 12 months or so. I ate there last Sunday and, while tempted by the carvery, I had a cheese and bacon burger - with chips and salad. It was faultless - as was the service. They also do a selection of about a dozen small dishes such as whitebait and olives. These are a reasonably priced alternative to a full meal. The pub is also a genuine local with a great atmosphere and community feel. I cannot give this place other than a 5 star rating.

Been to the pub before and I wasn’t impressed, now a new manager is in I gave it another try again and it have improved massively. I came here on Saturday for band night. The pub isn’t my local but my mother lives in the village so I came down with her. Firstly greeted by the new land lady, she is very nice; Engaged in conversation which made me feel very welcome. Blonde lady behind the bar was so lovely, very talkative and smiley. She was very fair and always went to who was next at the bar no matter where they were standing. She talked to us about the range of gins and wines, we got 2 bottles of Pinot Blush. The other lady didn’t seem like she wanted to be there. Understandable it was a busy night for the pub but a smile would make the night go quicker the food was yummy! Roast meats in a bap...what more could you want? I had a roast pork bap with apple sauce and homemade coleslaw... I will be making these with left over roast meats, great idea. Last few times we had been to this pub to either just drink or eat something was a complete disappointment. Many pubs in England tend to change hands rather frequently so it can be a frustrating experience trying to keep up with the good and the bad, the pubs that have been neglected and gone off and those which have been picked up from the doldrums, with new people running them, an injection of new ideas and good, attentive service. This pub now fits into the latter category. We went there last Friday only 2 weeks after new ownership (not sure of this point) and management had taken it over. Beer prices had been modified slightly, these had become ridiculously priced of late, if you could get any! (I went there last Summer to have a cold lager in their lovely garden and was told that all four draft lagers were unavailable! Not one, but all four taps). Anyway, the food was good and nicely served, people were happy, hard working and cheerful and the place was buzzing. Which I dare say has not happened in quite awhile.

Eventually having to show ourselves to our table after being ignored and even went to find menus as noone brought them over. It then took us to call someone over before we were even offered a drink. Two meals took around 20 minutes to arrive which were good but we did not get to eat with our other family members as there was noone serving the carvery at the time leaving them to stand waiting for around 15 minutes before getting served. The carvery had chewy meat, frozen potatoes and average vegetables. After finishing our meal the waitrose brought over our bill advising they would follow with a card machine. No machine arrived we then had to wait at the bar a further 15 minutes to pay very poor unfriendly service. Safe to say will not be returning anytime soon.

Visited today having not been to this pub for ages. As we entered it looked a bit tired with a scruffy carpet, random books on the bookshelf haphazardly and a sauce dish on the shelf that must have been there from the night before. However we got a warm welcome from the staff and were shown to our table.

The pub has so much potential but just feels tired and lacks atmosphere. The food is ok, with a particularly good Sunday Roast and lunches but it certainly needs reinvigorating and redecorating to get more atmosphere and make it into the great pub that it should be. The staff are always friendly and the service good but please think of how to get more people through the door!

Wow. What has happened to this place? Saturday evening and it's where the local teenagers hang out. Menu very limited so didn't eat here plus lots of bad language meant we didn't really want to stay. Won't be rushing back anytime soon.

This is my local and I don’t usually review places close to my heart! But we decided to go for a short walk and have Sunday lunch before popping home to watch England v Croatia. So glad we did as it was lunch superb. Beef was cooked exactly as my wife likes it, my lamb was tender and delicious. Vegetables etc were great. I had the cheeseboard afterwards and it was amazingly good quality and value. Highly recommend the experience to anyone.

We ate here last Tuesday evening, as two of a party of eleven friends. Really friendly reception and hospitality from the bar staff, despite not being warned that a large party would be dining. (We would have rung ahead but nobody expected that many to turn up!)

Lovely pub. Great setting and interior. Big car park at the back and easy parking at the front, which made it much easier for us to get in. One of the regulars saw us from inside, and despite the rain, immediately came out to offer me help with the door. The waitress was very helpful and sat us down immediately at a lovely table by the window. The menu was great and varied. The food and service was impeccable and the price surprisingly cheap. The same gentleman regular helped me again on the way out. It also has a big room at the back for families or large groups and a big garden perfectly suitable for children. Would definitely recommend this place and go again.

Very disappointing. We were met by the very offhand manager for whom everything was too much trouble, despite the pub being next to empty. He disappeared off fairly soon and the bar staff were fine. Food was very average but then the menu which doesn’t appear to have change since my last visit a year ago, is extremely limited. Fabulous village pub in a quintessential English village but how it stays in business, I don’t know. You don’t have to go far to get much better fare.

We ate at the pub two days whilst staying at a local B&B; and visiting the Festival of Speed. The pub in my opinion is what a typical village pub should be and if we lived in the area we would visit regularly, it has a lovely atmosphere, friendly locals, excellent garden and parking, the food is good too. We watched the football semi-final with the locals the first night and although the service for the food was a little slow, it was a busy night. The next night was quieter and the service was fine. All in all a great pub.

I booked the Red Lyon because I remembered they offer half size Sunday Lunch which is ideal for my parents who don’t like large portions. Both parents ordered the beef. I had the pork which was good and my husband had fish and chips which was also good. However, neither parent could eat the beef. They couldn’t even cut it as it was like old shoe leather. Dad asked for a steak knife which helped a bit but Mum just gave up and didn’t eat any of hers. To put a tin lid on it my husband’s coffee arrived and looked like treacle. Then he added the milk which was off and curdled. Completely unacceptable. They removed the coffee from the bill and apologised. When we were asked if everything had been OK when we were paying the bill I pointed out how awful the beef was and the waitress said she’d let the kitchen know. No offer of taking that off the bill even though they must have seen one plate was almost completely uneaten. I thought the whole experience was very disappointing.

Incredible length of time for food to be served. Despite several reminders simple food orders ~ pies possibly from previous curry night, ploughmans took over an hour. Other customers appeared to be served more promptly.... and we are still waiting.... 13.54 and pies just arrived looking overdone and burnt on top. Ham and cheddar ploughmans served after 90 minutes ..with no cheddar ... which was finally produced after a couple of requests but without any acknowledgement that it should not have required a special request. Paid up ~ an apology but that's it. We won't come back.

Stayed over on the Saturday night with my partner and my parents after a family party in Slinford. Room was old fashioned but we felt that added to the chintzy atmosphere, although the room was a little grubby around the edges! (A little dusty which affected my parter’s asthma). The food was well priced and filled a hole- classic pub style menu but well executed. Staff were friendly and approachable- especially when my parter locked us out of our room! Breakfast was lovely and very personal. All things considered, a pleasant stay but the room could have used a deep clean.

This pub should be the heart of a beautiful rural village. Sadly that is not the case. The menu isn’t inspiring and the food produced is not great quality. Locally there are many, many pubs and restaurants where great food is the norm - why can’t our “local” do the same ? As “locals” who live in the village just to be able to walk within no more than 10 minutes to have a lovely lunch with visiting friends and family or perhaps a great evening meal alone or with neighbours would be a real bonus -but it just doesn’t happen. We recently visited on one of the so called “theme” nights with a couple of neighbours and I think there were just 8 othe people in the bar drinking - we were the only foursome ordering food - which was definitely not great (not from the theme menu which was pizza!!) and it will be a long time before we repeat the exercise - so, so sad.

We started with coffee and lunch orders at 10am and returned in two parties at noon and 12.30pm. By that time the noon party were already eating. The remaining 17 were served drinks and after a reasonable time were all served different dishes almost at the same time. As organiser if anything had gone wrong I would get the stick but the weather was cold but sunny and the pub fantastic so I received applause. I then thanked the pub staff.

12 of us had lunch with kids yesterday at the Red Lyon and we were blown away by the quality of the food. We had heard that it was good, but we had no idea HOW good. It is a real undiscovered gem in beautiful village. Fantastic atmosphere, great staff, brilliant service and the food was really top notch and nothing was too much trouble. A few minutes from the downs link, it is a real treat if you are walking and fancy a bit of lunch. Couldn't recommend it highly enough. Thank you Red Lyon for such a magical afternoon!

We were staying in the area for the Rudgwick Country show and found this little gem which was only a short walk from the caravan clubsite we were using. Popped in for a drink and ended up visiting every day thereafter for the next two days. Staff were friendly and welcoming and lent us their playing cards! On our 2nd visit we took other family along too, totally unannounced and at 8.45pm for food....again the staff were great, not a problem to seat 9 of us so late and the food was absolutely delicious (the chicken and chorizo pie was to die for). We could not be more impressed and will definitely be re-visiting ...... maybe using the car park for the motorhome this time, less distance to stumble home to :)

Called in for lunch. Menu was limited but the food was very good.Sat on the sunny terrace and had a relaxing lunch enjoying the view. Now for the moan, I was asked to leave my credit card behind the bar. Security was an issue as there was no card safe and credit cards were kept in a folder by the till. So i paid for the meals and the drinks. On returning to the bar for another couple of drinks my card was refused as the amount was below the accepted limit. I then endured the embarrassment of going to find cash from somewhere. Good job my wife had a bit of cash on her. Come on guys, a nice lunch was spoiled by your silly rules. I hope it doesn't happen next time i come in.

We spent a lovely afternoon at this pub eating our meal inside and then spending the rest of the afternoon sitting outside. The staff were very friendly and helpful including the landlord and they were all very patient with our 5 and 9 year old who were making friends with the staff. There wasn't a large menu but varied choices for both adults and children and portions were good sizes. We were a party of 9, the food was all very tasty and service was really good. Dessert menu lovely it was hard to choose! The outside garden had plenty of seating and a play area for younger children but the garden is also large enough for the kids to run around without disturbing anyone. Overall a lovely visit with good food and great service.

I did help him eat some of the cod. The batter covering the cod was really nice. Overall we really enjoyed our lunch. Will defo go back again!

Never been to this pub before but was looking for somewhere to meet up with family halfway and found The Crown Inn and what a find it is. Such a lovely pub with a really warm, friendly welcome for us and our dogs. The food is amazing, lots of choice. We all had different dishes, homemade pie, vegan burrito, vegan burger and steak. All of the meals were cooked to perfection and the portion size was perfect. Really glad we selected the Crown Inn as it will become our meeting point from now on - would totally recommend a visit and the homemade pie!!!

Unfortunately we felt on this occasion the food really was not up to the usual standard - whitebait over cooked - chips not their usual crispy delicious standard - but everyone has an off day and we said it would not deter us from returning HOWEVER we found out as we were leaving that after 14 years of trading the Orchard is due to close at the end of September 😔 So sad as , as a family some who are no longer with us it was always are “go to” place for a good quality home cooked meal . So what ever the owners plans are for the future we wish them good luck 😋
