Such a lovely old building, very friendly and welcoming staff, with one particular lady who couldn’t do enough, carrying my heavy case upstairs (thank you). The true highlight was dinner in front of the log burner, with the best steak pie I have ever eaten! I’ll remember this place for a long time and will definitely be back!

We have been coming to this pub every summer for over 10 years and we all feel it’s really really lost it’s way. Every year we come here as its really near to the holiday cottage we rent . We won’t be coming back. The prices are now exorbitant £7 a pint lager! £10.50 small glass of wine. The staff used to be jolly, chatty and nice but now just look like they don’t want to be there . We could hear the black haired bar manageress swearing in a very vulgar way in the kitchens on a number of occasions in the evening. Just so unpleasant. Not what you want when you are taking your 90 year old parents out. . Made us all feel very uncomfortable when our server came out looking welled up. My dad wanted to leave when he heard this. Being British we kept quiet but it’s bothered me so much since our holiday. I had to write something in the hope that somebody who owns the place might do something about it. Overall now .. over priced, staff who are clearly deeply unhappy and don’t want to be there. Not a very nice atmosphere, particularly when you have paid over £280 for essentially a pub meal I had to stop my 90 year old dad having a rant at her when she came to take payment . Well done lescar You ruined our evening Our last night of our holiday we went to the Norman knight which was a country mile away and a country mile better. £5.05 a pint and £175 for all of us Very disappointed to be writing such a negative review but problems clearly come from the management and to treat young staff this way is unacceptable. Ruined our evening

The food is consistently good , we have gone there for many years, The reason for my lower rating is due to the rude unprofessional attitude of some of the staff , this has happened on occasion and I noticed in the reviews this has happened to others,

We have passed the Red Lion many times on our way from Chipping Norton and Stratford upon Avon and thought it was time for a visit with friends. Sarah and Lisa run a great ship - we were made so welcome, given a nice pre booked table and were delighted with the varied and interesting menu. The drinks list was equally formidable. All four of us rated our experience five stars. High quality local products used - a most enjoyable two course meal from the a la carte menu - sadly no room for puds which looked equally tempting. Faultless - and obvioiusly popular as the car park was wo thirds full before 12.30 - midweek. A tip - they serve morning coffee from 10am daily - so yiou can pop by and look at the menu.

Lovely country pub! We visited the Red Lion with friends and our dogs after a walk nearby. Staff were very friendly and accommodating; we had made a booking for later in the afternoon but decided to enjoy the sunshine in the pub garden (as the weather was better than expected!). The food was fantastic, each of us enjoyed a different main dish (including roast, fish and guinea fowl) and the dogs enjoyed a gravy bone and snooze in the lovely lawned garden behind the pub. Highly recommend, the Red Lion was the perfect place to finish a great day out with friends.

All staff very attentive and happy to chat not just serve food and drinks which is often not the case. Our dog was well catered for and fell asleep quite happily in the bar while we relaxed with a well deserved drink after our long walk .we will be back, thanks again to all staff

We only meet these friends once in a blue moon so our meal at this popular pub and restaurant was on an appropriate evening. It was a busy Friday evening at The Red Lion and service was perhaps a little slower than you might hope for - but the excellent standard of the freshly cooked meal more than made up for that. The standard summer menu had a wonderful choice on it, as did the specials board, such a good choice in fact, that it was difficult to decide what to have - we will have to visit again to try other things. The restaurant area is simply but attractively decorated with classic sturdy oak tables and the whole place has a friendly ambience. Recommend you try it.

We stopped for lunch after visiting Chastleton House. The place is clearly for people with dogs as there were over 8 dogs wandering throughout the restaurant. Most were very well behaved but back from long walks so a little smelly. The food was nice - once we got it. It took aver 45 minutes to get our starters and another 30 minutes to get our mains so we spent the better part of the afternoon in a pub instead of exploring the beautiful countryside. Those who came in with dogs were served more quickly than we so I guess we needed to bring a dog in order to get good service.

Another pub which is easy to drive straight past as you skirt the Cotswolds. It is however well worth stopping and venturing inside. I've enjoyed lunches and evening meals here and have always enjoyed the food and the friendly service. It's not the run of the mill pub grub by any means. It offers a wide menu of nicely presented well cooked food. It's also a rather charming village pub. Prices are very reasonable and it accommodates more people than would appear from outside. Good value and on my regular list for visiting friends and relatives.

A wet Saturday and a last minute decision to go out for lunch. We have been to the Red Lion in the past and knew that if we could get a table it would be a good place to eat. Arriving anywhere that is even remotely popular on a wet Saturday lunchtime and expecting to get a table is pretty ambitious to say the least and we were ready to be told that it was full. However, as always the staff were extremely helpful and after a short wait we were found a table. Now it was really busy and we fully expected a wait for our meals but in truth the wait was no longer than we remember from the last visit and boy is it worth waiting for. One of the staples of the Red Lion is the incredible Hook Norton Steak and Ale pie (and chips!). If you really want something to cheer you up, and fill you up, this is it.The taste is superb, the aroma makes your mouth water before you start and it is almost impossible to not eat the lot. Yes I am a fan of this. It is very very good. The staff on this Saturday were very friendly and attentive even though they were very busy. I love this place. Thank you.

We enjoyed a wonderful evening meal. First class food and service in top quality English surroundings. Comfortable room and an excellent breakfast set us up for a lovely day exploring the Cotswolds. This is a great base and one we will be returning to!

We stopped for an evening at the Red Lion, en route from the Cotswolds to Stratford upon Avon, as we were attracted by the beautiful building that hosts the pub and restaurant. After a warm welcome by the effective front of house, we enjoyed a terrific meal there. Be prepared to wait as everything is cooked from fresh. Highly recommended.

We went without a booking on a Monday night. Lisa the boss was having a night off but we were very well looked after. The place was busy but service was good and food excellent again. I had the beef medallions which were cooked just right.

A nice place to eat, but for someone suffering from the illness that I have, which means I have a very reduced immune system it is almost impossible to relax and eat with dogs slobberng two feet away from my plate and waitresses cuddling and coo-ing over the animals. The waitresses definitely didn't have time to wash their hands after each caress. Don't get me wrong! I was born and bred on a farm and adore all animals BUT dogs and pub food don't go together in my book. Sorry - won't come again...

This place has been well-decorated and it was absolutely full at lunchtime. The staff coped very efficiently. Fish and chips modishly served on "newspaper" with the fish on top of the mushy peas and accompanied by the ubiquitous Jenga construction of thick-cut chips. Be careful your Gran doesn't trip over the dogs and be sure your waitress has washed her hands after patting them before she serves you your food. Would we return? Yes, but only when dogs are banned.

Not only was the food excellent value for money but it was tasty and enjoyable. The portions are not skimped either. As far as bar food goes it would be hard to find anything better. The pub has a comfortable, traditional feel with beams everywhere. We sat in a vey comfortable Window seat with plenty of room. Pity about the loud mouthed group sitting close to us but we can't hold the pub responsible for that. The service was smooth, friendly and efficient with a lovely chatty lady from Zimbabwe. There is ample parking too. I have lived in this area for 15 years but never visited this pub before but I'm going to make up for it now. A hidden gem. Thoroughly recommended.

I called for availability on the day due to another establishment letting us down for Sunday lunch. The guy I spoke to kindly managed to fit us in with a booking time. We gladly accepted and was at the premises within 15 minutes. They looked after us fantastically with awesome service and food. They had a large party to attend to, but we never felt as if we were put aside. I can not rate the golden cross highly enough for rescuing our Sunday lunch. Thank you.

Still a great little pub. The actors bar is the best room as it has loads of pictures of actors going back many years. I couldn't name most of them, but it's much better decoration than having a rusty french bike nailed to a wall. The drunken duck was an excellent pint and the pies on the table close looked amazing.
