Everything that a country pub with rooms should be! Open fire places, super friendly but professional staff and decent bedrooms. Exceptional food offer which thankfully goes well beyond the ubiquitous burger/fish&chips/sticky toffee pudding clichés. Excellent breakfast (with homemade marmalade!) Only issue was that the EV charger wasn’t working but they know that and are trying to fix it. As others have pointed out, bedrooms on the road side of the building are not the quietest so try to book accordingly.

We used to live in this village until 2 years ago and the Red Lion is the only thing we miss apart from two friends. The lunch on Saturday was excellent, as always. Sarah is a wonderful cook. She caters for special dietary requirements as well. The waiting staff are so friendly and efficient. The pub is gorgeous and well frequented. The atmosphere is welcoming. Lisa and Jonathan remembered us. We love this pub and the food.

Lovely local pub, warm friendly with good service BUT The food used to be exceptional, meat tender and plenty of fish dishes, sometimes specials of the day. Unfortunately, I think must be change of chef, boring menu for many weeks, no plain fish, fish and chips, fish and batter poor, stodgy fishcakes or pasta with fish. Doubt if we will return

Looking for a good restaurant is not always easy these days. Country pubs are either empty and unwelcoming or full of dogs so the combination of good food, great staff and a friendly atmosphere are not easy to find. Roll up The Red Lion which fits the criteria perfectly. Parking is easy, even with an EV charger, and a few meters takes you to the warm and welcoming interior. The beer is excellent and the food, served up by knowledgeable staff, is really good indeed. I thoroughly recommend this excellent venue.

I love this country pub/restaurant. Firstly, the setting is superb, fields as far as you can see towards the rear and a great place to socialise as well as for business. The food is tremendous. Particularly, the Hake in Thai sauce and the pie. Love the fires for those autumn winter evenings and you get a fair amount of foreign visitors to exchange a few stories with. The staff are also especially warm and friendly. Lovely gastro feel to it. Look forward to visiting again. Thanks guys and well done.. Keep up the great work.

We booked our table in advance, particularly as it was a Friday evening, just as well as most tables were reserved and the bar busy when we arrived around 5.45pm. We were shown to our table and water was brought out. After a short wait our waitress returned for our drinks and food order. We ordered a sharing starter of sourdough bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip and butter. I am not sure what occurred this time as we have eaten here before and been very pleased, the bread was cold and served with a tiny amount of balsamic in, what appeared about an inch of oil, the oil was tasteless and pale, we could not be certain it was actually olive oil at all. The butter was rock hard and un-spreadable. Most of it went back with the waitress, no discount offered even though we advised we weren't pleased with it? The mains were lovely however and enjoyed. The staff are always friendly and service good.

This really is a fantastic Pub. The food is excellent and irresistible. The beds are extremely comfortable. My wife, son and I stayed here for two nights and we were extremely well looked after and nothing was too much trouble. This is really a little bit of old England and a great change from the Premier Inns which we usually use. I would thoroughly recommend this pub is you are in the area visiting the local attractions. It is not far from Jeremy Clarkson's Farm and Pub.

This pub is an absolute gem, the food is consistently excellent and the service personal and attentive. Good range of local beers and plenty of covers, including a lovely garden. Three courses around £35 per head give-or-take, could be less if you skip dessert but they're irresistible. Only possible issue is that they make a point of being 'dog-friendly', and you may get an enquiring wet nose on the edge of the table as you negotiate your ham hock terrine. They will reseat you if you ask though. Essential visit if you're anywhere near the area.

Ideal spot for a birthday celebration. What better way to celebrate a friend's birthday than to do a lovely Cotswold village walk and then have lunch at The Red Lion, Long Compton. Easy parking and a warm welcome from their team. A nice window table and a glass of bubbles to start off the proceedings. Excellent menu and also a fine selection of wine to go with our meal choices. A nice touch was to have our glasses of wine - all different - delivered in small decanters. Trout and smoked salmon starters were popular with Hook Norton pie, pork medallions and fishcakes all earning top marks. All in all a very nice lunch at attentive staff.

We we directed to this quintessential English pub/restaurant by the hostess of our bed and breakfast. When we arrived for dinner, the pub was full of locals enjoying themselves. The atmosphere was upbeat and positive. Our table was waiting for us. The menu highlighted fresh local produce. The portions were just right and the food absolutely delicious. We only meet these friends once in a blue moon so our meal at this popular pub and restaurant was on an appropriate evening. It was a busy Friday evening at The Red Lion and service was perhaps a little slower than you might hope for - but the excellent standard of the freshly cooked meal more than made up for that. The standard summer menu had a wonderful choice on it, as did the specials board, such a good choice in fact, that it was difficult to decide what to have - we will have to visit again to try other things. The restaurant area is simply but attractively decorated with classic sturdy oak tables and the whole place has a friendly ambience. Recommend you try it.

We stopped for lunch after visiting Chastleton House. The place is clearly for people with dogs as there were over 8 dogs wandering throughout the restaurant. Most were very well behaved but back from long walks so a little smelly. The food was nice - once we got it. It took aver 45 minutes to get our starters and another 30 minutes to get our mains so we spent the better part of the afternoon in a pub instead of exploring the beautiful countryside. Those who came in with dogs were served more quickly than we so I guess we needed to bring a dog in order to get good service.

Another pub which is easy to drive straight past as you skirt the Cotswolds. It is however well worth stopping and venturing inside. I've enjoyed lunches and evening meals here and have always enjoyed the food and the friendly service. It's not the run of the mill pub grub by any means. It offers a wide menu of nicely presented well cooked food. It's also a rather charming village pub. Prices are very reasonable and it accommodates more people than would appear from outside. A wet Saturday and a last minute decision to go out for lunch. We have been to the Red Lion in the past and knew that if we could get a table it would be a good place to eat. Arriving anywhere that is even remotely popular on a wet Saturday lunchtime and expecting to get a table is pretty ambitious to say the least and we were ready to be told that it was full. However, as always the staff were extremely helpful and after a short wait we were found a table. Now it was really busy and we fully expected a wait for our meals but in truth the wait was no longer than we remember from the last visit and boy is it worth waiting for. One of the staples of the Red Lion is the incredible Hook Norton Steak and Ale pie (and chips!). If you really want something to cheer you up, and fill you up, this is it.The taste is superb, the aroma makes your mouth water before you start and it is almost impossible to not eat the lot. Yes I am a fan of this. It is very very good. The staff on this Saturday were very friendly and attentive even though they were very busy. I love this place. Thank you.

A nice place to eat, but for someone suffering from the illness that I have, which means I have a very reduced immune system it is almost impossible to relax and eat with dogs slobberng two feet away from my plate and waitresses cuddling and coo-ing over the animals. This place has been well-decorated and it was absolutely full at lunchtime. The staff coped very efficiently. Fish and chips modishly served on "newspaper" with the fish on top of the mushy peas and accompanied by the ubiquitous Jenga construction of thick-cut chips. Be careful your Gran doesn't trip over the dogs and be sure your waitress has washed her hands after patting them before she serves you your food. Would we return? We stopped here for lunch on our way home from a weekend in nearby Stourton. We weren't sure if we would find anywhere still open late lunchtime but The Red Lion was taking orders until 2.30. Six of us had a light lunch and drink each, sitting in the garden making the most of the April sunshine, and the price averaged out to about £8.50 each. The food was very good and the service was friendly and very efficient. The Red Lion is bigger both on the outside and the inside than at first glance and I imagine would be a very nice place to stay overnight. I believe they have 5 or 6 ensuite rooms. This is a fantastic pub...wonderful food, wine and atmosphere, except on this occasion. It was my birthday and I was really looking forward to the meal, as a regular I knew it would not be disappointing. My quibble is not with either the food or wine or service but to do with the fact this is a dog friendly pub. I don't mind dogs being allowed in the bar area but I di take issue with them being in the restaurant. We were sat with a table behind us that had 2 spaniels that I could smell through my meal. One barked a few times , was shouted at by its owner very loudly and was even taken on a walk around the restaurant. Then another dog + owner walked in to help socialise his dog with these two. He stood chatting right by our table and I mean we were very close to this table, while the dogs played! I could see another table with another couple looking decidedly uncomfortable and unimpressed. Even members of staff were coming over and stroking & playing with the dogs before going back into the kitchen or behind the bar( did they wash their hands every time?)I like dogs, I've owned dogs but I feel strong that allowing them in a restaurant where food is served and eaten is unhygienic and very off putting for diners ( some may even be allergic). It was such a shame because the whole evening was ruined by these two wi en and their two dogs. Please, please rethink your policy of allowing dogs in the restaurant itself, keep them to the bar area only.

The pub is beautifully cosy with real fires and a resident dog (always a bonus in my book!) ..the staff are welcoming and friendly. Between 6pm and 7pm there is a fixed price menu £13.95 for 2 courses .. there is a 3 course option but I cant remember the price. My Mum and I both ate from this and I had the lovely Greek salad and then we both had the chicken breast with sweet chilli and cream and garlic sauce .. it was beautifully cooked and delicious. My Dad ate from the a la carte and had the beef samosas which he claimed could teach our favourite Indian restaurant a thing or two, and then the cod and chips which to be honest he got a bit boring about - raving about the cod, the batter, the chips the mushy peas and the tartare sauce ... he actually finally proclaimed them "The Best Ever"... and he is 82 and from the coast so he knows about fish and chips. Mum then had the banana and pecan pavlova with toffee sauce and we kindly helped her out as it was clearly enough for 3 and very good. Wines were good and reasonable - Faustino V for under £22 This is everything a good pub should be ..(did I mention it also has a lovely garden too for the summer months) .. it is very dog friendly ... but still stylish and elegant ... go visit - you wont be disappointed.

We enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Red Lion. Our server, John, was delightful--and the food was really tasty, freshly prepared and perfectly seasoned. Highly recommended!

why does this place have two sites on Trip Advisor????I think I put my review of the pub on the hotel site, but whatever - it was a good pub, good food, and a lovely house wine, Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon!

We live locally but for some reason have only eaten there once before almost 4 years ago. Decided to stop for lunch and we both had different pork dishes which were perfectly cooked. I had a chocolate sponge sweet and have not tasted better. We have found a new "local" restaurant now. Well worth a visit.

We decided on Long Compton as the location for our first house in 2011. We'd fallen in love with the property so put in an offer without doing too much research into the village and community we were about to become a part of. However, we have never had cause to regret our move and are particularly pleased with the quality of our local pub. We are regular drinkers at the bar in the Red Lion and are please to have such a good restaurant on our doorstep, especially when our friends and family are visiting. Neither my husband or I (or any of the guests we have taken out to eat at The Red Lion) have ever had a bad meal there and Lisa, Sarah and all the staff have made us feel welcome from day one. We use the Red Lion restaurant for special occasions, such as our friend's birthday in February, and for impromptu dining when we don't want to cook. Our most recent visit for food was in March 2014, when my husband and I and some of our friends from the village decided to meet there for dinner. I had the fish and chips (a rare indulgence on my running training schedule) - it was divine and well worth breaking the diet for!

Restaurant located on general drive and was very pleased that we stopped for lunch. Daily set menu and a la carte chosen by members of the party and all choices well prepared and served. Food hot and tasty and overall very good value for money. We were told that end of week and weekends can get busy and therefore reservations recommended and throughout the weekdays the business is good. Well worth the effort to locate Long Compton and enjoy some good food.

I ate here on a bit of a whim on a Sunday night with my partner. Prices are reasonable for what you get and the staff were attentive and polite. We booked a table which was reserved In a cozy part of the restaurant. I had a steak and ale pie which was tasty and my partner asked if there was any Sunday lunch left over, she was pleased when they said they could do this. The restaurant is clean and atmospheric, I would return and would recommend.

We were a family party of 19 and were looked after very well. All meals were served together and were good quality, hot and well cooked. Could not fault the service or the food.

Ate here on a Sunday night with friends, the restaurant was very quiet so not much ambience but the food more than made up for that. We all had different dishes and four clean plates was evidence of the high quality food served. I would certainly recommend this restaurant.

Lovely pub, we went on a Wednesday evening so was quiet and peaceful. Staff were lovely. The food was great, hot and yummy! They had a wide range of gins available. It was also a very affordable meal of 2 mains for £24. Will be visiting again.

We booked a table at short notice on Mothers Day. We were working at the Village Hall over the road, so didn’t have a lot of time to eat. Had a nice table for 2. I expected a bit of a delay because of the Mothers Day bookings, but there were quite a few tables available. It took half an hour for our order to be taken, only then after I had asked for it. We ordered roast beef for my hubby and loin of pork for myself. Another half an hour went by and again I had to ask how long it would take. When the meals finally arrived, both looked beautiful, but the mash on pork loin plate was stone cold. I asked them to deal with it, which they did (took another 10 minutes). When the replacement plate came out it was also stone cold. By this time I told them to cancel my meal. Hubbys meal was ok, but not piping hot, but he ate that. He had ordered a pudding, which we took away and which I ate at the venue over the road. Overall I did expect a delay, but given that there were only a few tables taken, it should have been a lot more efficient I feel. Such a shame as the Kings Head looked lovely.
