Can't comment on the rooms as didn't stay here. I came here in July for a quick drink on the way back from somewhere and it looked like a nice pub inside. So came back to try the food, and it wasn't a disappointment. A nice menu with good choices for everyone. The food came came out quick and looked fresh and clean. Very tasty puddings too! It's a lovely location and dog friendly too. I would probably book a table in the summer as it gets busy. Seating outside for the warmer weather too. Would definitely come again and recommend.

We found the Red Lion tea time yesterday, what an absolute GEM of a 15th century pub.! Wonderful atmosphere, very helpful and friendly staff, and the food was excellent.. So good in fact, we have just returned from our second visit having eaten a late Sunday lunch.. Once again, excellent food, different staff members this evening, but just like last night all the staff were very helpful and friendly...!! Definitely returning again tomorrow evening for meal number 3 😊🍴😊 Highly Recommended, for atmosphere, friendly staff and excellent food.. 5 Star Dean and Steph, Dorset

We live quite locally and come over to the Red Lion often. The staff, food and ambience are fantastic. A great stop off for lunch, if visiting Killerton. I especially want to mention how good they are at catering for allergies and dietary choices. I came for my birthday lunch and we had a vegetarian, a pescatarian, a gluten free and a dairy free guest in the party! Their lunch menu catered for everyone and was clearly marked. I am the veggie and always have at least two delicious and imaginative choices on the menu, plus, very often, another on the specials menu. Highly recommended.

I visited this delightful pub for a small family celebration. I would be the first to admit that eating out is not something I particularly enjoy, but what a wonderful experience I had! Such a beautiful location, amazing food, promptly served, beautifully presented, and polite, attentive staff. I would very much recommend this pub. You won't be disappointed.

I can hardly find words to say how brilliant this place is. An old quirky pub near Exeter with excellent bus service into the city. But you wouldnt need to go into the city for dinner..this place is amazing. A sensible menu with home cooked food, including lighter plates if you dont want to eat much. We also had breakfast which was cooked to order and so tasty. They even gave us a packed breakfast as we left the next day early… The rooms are charming if quirky..this is an old building after all, but with all mod cons and comfortable, including home made curtains! The people couldnt have been more helpful and made the place perfect in every way. I cant speak highly enough about this place..it is a perfect pub getaway without being in some trendy hyped up place, or city. You will not be disappointed.

What a delightful pub. We booked a night's stay at the Red Lion as it was not too far from the M5 on the way to visit family, and I'm so glad we found it! The staff were all really lovely and friendly, our evening meal was delicious (disappointingly too full for pudding!), lovely selection of local beers and ciders. Our room was beautifully presented, clean and comfortable with a lovely little en suite. Home made shortbread to accompany the tea and coffee tray in the room was the best I've had in my life, pure heaven in biscuit form!!! We will definitely be back!

This is a very nice pub with seating outside and a little garden across the drive. Positives nice food and nice looking pub Negatives miserable staff and not a great welcome at all. Waitress sighed when we asked for something. I was standing at the bar waiting and the manager was pouring a drink and didn't acknowledge me. Not one smile from staff. I didn't like the tip being added to the bill. They do ask if that's OK when they hand the bill over but it's awkward to decline once its been added. I suggest if the staff are relying on tips then the establishment should pay them more.

The only downside was a bit of a surprise to find that the rooms were not serviced once during our stay. No clean glasses, mugs, cutlery and no replenishment of the dinks. Make your own beds too.

I recently visited this pub in the village and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations. The food was absolutely amazing, and the service was top-notch. Not only was the food delicious, but it was also served very quickly, which was a pleasant surprise. The quality of the food was exceptional and it left all of us, including my partner and kids, extremely satisfied. We also loved the fact that they had a lovely garden where we could sit outside and enjoy our meal. I highly recommend this pub for anyone looking for a great dining experience.

We stayed in the 2 bedroomed apartment for 2 nights. The Red Lion is a charming pub in a lovely quiet village near Exeter. The entrance to the apartment is up some steps around the back of the pub. A spacious downstairs with kitchen, dining and lounge space and a shower room. Upstairs are 2 smallish bedrooms. The cleanliness of the rooms were lacking, there was a film of dust covering the hob, all windows had cobwebs and insects in the corners and the drainage plug in the shower was grim. On our return to the room at the end of our 1st day we noticed it had not been serviced. As we were eating in the restaurant that evening we mentioned it to the staff who seemed quite horrified that the room had not been cleaned and took our key to sort it out. The other people in our party had the same issue and when they went to leave the key at the bar they were told that since Covid they do not clean rooms when people stay for more than 1 night! Covid rules were removed 3.5 years ago, but IF that’s the case, tell people when they check in, not when they mention it after not cleaning the room. We did mention the lack of cleanliness when we checked out. That said, all bedding and towels were spotless. Breakfast was very good although if you want soft eggs ask for them to be soft, all our fried and poached eggs were overcooked. We ate here one evening and the food was tasty and plentiful. Service a tad slow but we weren’t in a rush so not an issue. I am being picky but the room should have been cleaner and the breakfast eggs not overcooked. It is a lovely pub, the staff were lovely and the food tasty and plentiful.

Food is always lovely but three of us had the small appetite options and we were really disappointed with the miniscule portions (definitely smaller than previous visits). I had the small curry which was £10.50 and only had a few mouthfuls. They really need to review this as other pubs which offer small appetite portions are much more generous. I had a small carvery for £11 at another venue recently and this was about 4 times the size.

On a previous visit I was happy to give this pub a 4* rating , unfortunately a recent visit left me less than impressed. The food was good but must now be considered expensive in comparison to similar offerings elsewhere. The service was much slower than previously experienced, with an expected drinks order having to be repeated after a wait of 15 minutes. However the real issue is they have now introduced a Service charge on the bill that added over £12 for the pleasure of having our lunch served at our table but there isn't any other option. I strongly object to having service charges added in a pub , you are NOT a City restaurant neither is the quality of service food or drink. Shall not return and would suggest others look further a field if looking for value for money.

We have visited the pub very regularly and the chap who runs the bar is great and the young team also - food is tasty and homemade although trying to call and book is impossible. The BAD side of this place is what I believe is the landlord - older greying chap - rude, rude, rude. We have cancelled a large booking off the back of this unsightly chap. Shame as it lets down everyone else who clearly works very hard. If you dont like local customers dont own a pub!

Late review as I actually stayed a couple of nights in April. This was a business trip so I stayed alone. I remember the amazing porridge for breakfast very well! I asked for a banana to go in it and the lady offered to chop it up for me. Note in the room said the tea and coffee tray could be replenished, so I (kind of) jokingly asked if that included the homemade shortbread… they immediately gave me more! The room was perfect, service was fantastic. Only thing I could really diss is location as I ran on country lanes in the evening but that’s really not the end of the world! I really enjoyed my stay.

Lovely stop over en route to Cornwall. Historic and picturesque. Comfortable room and wonderfully looked after by Mandy & Millie in the bar at dinner and by Alison (?) who served us as good a breakfast as I’ve had. A happy welcoming venue that provided great value and quality.

Return visit, much busier of course and lucky to get a table without booking. Didn’t disappoint, just as friendly and the beer and food just as good as our November visit. The deserts look amazing, might just dive in next time!

Went for Sunday lunch. Greeted with smiles and friendliness as soon as we walked in. Roast was perfect, couldn't believe the size of the Yorkshire puddings..huge! All of the girls who we spoke to were genuinely friendly. Definitely recommend this beautiful village pub .

We had a really lovely meal! Great to have some more interesting options such as red snapper, as well as the more traditional fare. Friendly, efficient staff and pretty location, we will return!

Not the usual fabulous sunday roast, plate swimming in thin runny gravy (usually thicker and tastier) . Every time we have been it’s only had a small amount of gravy on the meat with a gravy boat to do your own. Veg was good but...

An old school pub, dog friendly, no food but a good selection of drinks and a lovely log burner.

Absolutely love the Golden Lion. Cannot fault anything. All staff are very welcoming and the food is second to none. Generous servings. Have never had a bad meal. Although we are not regulars we definitely save this for special occasions.

We had a crab sandwich yesterday and were surprised at the price of £15.95 each but we ordered them anyway. We found the sandwiches were much smaller than usual and not so tasty. On checking my bank statement I see that Rockfish has taken over. Probably explains high price and smaller sandwiches. Just £9.95 further down the beach at 50⁰ North and much better quality.

Place is shut and looks to have been since December 2023. Christmas decorations still up.
