Had the very best visits to this welcoming, relaxing pub . Went in Friday night for a drink on the first evening of our weekend break , had probably the best meal I've had in a very long time. Went back in on Saturday and Sunday and we're greeted every time with smiling friendly hosts. Will definitely revisit when in the area

A typically good Cotswold village pub, with a warm welcome and a desire to please. Food seems to be individually prepared and their only fault is that “ Dee” is far too generous ( but, that’s a good fault ). And my recommendation to “ Andy “ is to display your menu on the wall OUTSIDE of your pub. Thank you.

We had Sunday Lunch at the Red Lion and I dont think I have ever had a Sunday Lunch as good. My husband's beef was excellent and my chicken and all the potatoes and veg were excellent. What made it even better is I have an unusual dietary condition cannot eat fruit or any acid and proves to be a big problem when I go out - but not at the Red Lion the staff were incredible and the food was properly the best Sunday Lunch out I have ever had. If you are going to Illmington that is the place to eat.

The Red Lion is just excellent. The owners are super friendly. The food is great especially the fish pie. Our whole family have been and had a long table and they provided great vegetarian and vegan options. The atmosphere is toasty because of two roaring real fires. We love the pub quiz on a Sunday night at 7.45.. what a hoot! It is a proper pub with a friendly vibe and amazing food.

Me, my husband and two kids (7 & 10) were staying in nearby Ebrington for a few days over the Easter break. We wanted some simple honest pub grub on our last night, and we were so impressed with this gem. My kids had the burgers (beware, they’re huge!), my husband had sausage and mash, and I had the steak & kidney suet pudding. Generous portions, fresh and delicious. Would definitely recommend.

Easter Monday. Went to the Red Lion after a walk around the beautiful village. Sat in the beer garden, served promptly and the food was fab. I had a fresh made spicy chicken pizza. Never have I had so much chicken on a pizza. The chilli burger was amazing too ( so I was told).

Staying in the village, we wandered in for an early evening pint looking for a cosy fireside to enjoy and were not disappointed- in fact, two roaring fires here with plenty of space, cosy seating and a real homely, proper country village-pub atmosphere. Had booked dinner at our accommodation so didn’t eat here but given the glowing reviews we may well plan to next time.

We booked a table for Sunday lunch following a walk in the area. I had the rib of beef which was melt in the mouth perfect, husband had the pork…both served with a pile of fresh veg, crisp roasties and an extra jug of gravy. We eat out a lot on Sundays and as roasts go, this was up there with the best of them (if a little on the more expensive side) Would heartily recommend. Sadly we were so full we couldn’t fit a pudding in.

Absolutely fabulous Sunday lunch today, thank you Red Lion Team. 👍😊 Between us we chose roast rib of beef, the brisket and the roast Lamb. Soo much tender delicious meat, huge tasty yorkies, crispy potatoes and lovely FRESH veggies! Really was the best roast we’ve EVER eaten out and we ordered a wonderful cauliflower cheese as an extra. Extremely generous portions as always and top notch home cooking at its absolute best. No mean portion controlled meals that you get elsewhere… Soo generous that we have as yet to have room left to try any of the deserts!! We don’t eat out as a family often, it’s a treat for us and whenever we do we choose to go to the Red Lion as it is consistently GREAT and all the staff are always really nice. The homemade minted lamb burger they have done in the past is the best burger any of us have ever tried!! 👌 Their pies are all fresh and homemade, the veg fresh and their gravy yummy! They welcome dogs too which is always a win win for us and for hubby that pops in during a dog walk for a drink and warm up. A traditional old school pub with most excellent food!

Very disappointed, only 2 pubs in the village and there is definitely room for both, if they “upped their game”. Pub was empty even though the rugby was on(other pub was still full). Lamb and chicken curry was hot but sauce tasted like it was out of a packet. We couldn’t eat all our meal and left only after 40mins, on leaving there was only 2 customers in the pub and it was only 8.15!

Three people and a dog were made welcome for Sunday dinner (ie at midday) in this great traditional pub. One had roast lamb, one had roast pork and one a vegan dish. I feel compelled to compliment them on the good sized jug of extra gravy - a thing not often seen. The place was brimming with activity: a group of bikers arrived and we overheard an interesting discussion; there were other dogs and plenty of people.

We arrived traditionally late for our reservation. We'll it's a tradition with us anyway and instead of being peeved the landlord soon rearranged things to make us comfortable in the Bar .I was going to be glad about this as 8t enabled me to eavesdrop on the Bar Leaners who proved conclusively that if Central Casting find themselves short of locals for the Bull at Ambridge they need look no further . In fact the scriptwriting team at The Archers could learn a thing or two about Village Pubs if they spent some time here . More importantly they could get a dose of reality on the dietary front because this pub does Sunday Lunch like its auditioning for Best Sunday Lunch Award 2022. Generous pile slices of roast Rib of Beef and a Mount Vesuvius sized Yorkshire Pudding impressed my Daughter whose Birthdaywe were celebrating ( she's a Chef ) and me ,and I'm a Beefeater ( well I look like one) .Excellent Gravy too . Similarly the roast Pork obviously came from a contented Old Spot and the Crackling was more Crackly than a forest fire . It's my Birthday soon and I'm already running a Campaign to return . Absolutely brilliant with a real open fire too and No Daft Music

Have been to the Red Lion a couple of times for Sunday lunch..that has been excellent, nice big meals but also many times for drinks..always been happy there. We like the fire and always cosy, just this time I think the cost of a glass of wine and especially the instant coffee (coffee machine wasn't on) was excessive..I did check making the coffee £2.90!! Definitely going to try the Howard next time as we are always walking in the area. Think sometimes if you don't drink alcohol, you can get a poor deal? The White Bear in Shipston would charge £7.90 for the wine and a pint!

How everyone can justify the cost of £3 for a dash of cordial and soda water is amazing. The same sort of response was against the cost of the other soft drinks. People were just amazed and disgusted with the high prices. £3 is the highest price I have ever paid. I have never been charged that amount even in London pubs. Visited for lunch today with two daughters, for my birthday treat. All three of us chose Pave of Lamb. Serving staff were pleasant and efficient. The vegetables (good variety - 6, and generous portions) were very nicely cooked, but we were all disappointed with the lamb, especially mine, which was fatty/sinewy and too rare. (Personally, we should have been asked how we would have preferred it cooked, as we would have been for a beefsteak). The cut was not a pave, but several pieces more suited to a casserole or stew. We did mention this at the end of our meal to the server, who said she would feed back to the chef. The star of the show sadly wasn't.

Ten of of us stopped here for lunch today. We were unanimous in our approval of the welcome, the warm atmosphere but most of all by the wonderful cooking. The selection of dishes on the menu is eclectic and includes some pub favorites like whitebait and beer battered haddock but also some less usual items: harissa humus and braised leg of lamb for example, but the moules frites got my vote; the best I've had a quite a while. Worth the trip any day!
