Called in for a light lunch last month. The restaurant (predominantly Indian cuisine) was disappointingly empty. Not a good sign. A pleasant enough meal but felt the charge of £3.50 for a paratha was excessive. Coffee also at £3.50 a cup was awful. Is there anywhere outside Italy that can produce a decent coffee? At the prices charged it should at least taste like coffee and be drinkable.

My wife and I visited for lunch on Sunday 8/9. I know this restaurant over many years, and it has recently changed hands. It clearly isn’t as busy as it used to be, but we had traditional Sunday lunch, which was nicely cooked, we were served by I believe was the owners wife, very nice ,,friendly , and overall a nice afternoon. It takes time for new owners to make there mark on a new venture, so give them time. They have an Indian night on Fridays which we have been to, and really is excellent.

I have visited several times and on each occasion I think, "maybe it will be better next time." The Sunday lunch should have been hotter - it was lukewarm. The meal itself was OK. The meat cooked as requested and the vegetables were acceptable. As a whole, simply not hot enough. Only two staff serving but as the restaurant was virtually empty this did not cause a problem. It is a pity you cannot have one course only. This means you either have to eat a starter or have a pudding. Two courses for £27 is not unreasonable but the main course is large, so impossible to finish if you choose a starter (also generous in size). A light dessert is perfect but there should be a choice of one course only. Maybe a weekday, if I go again. I've heard their Thali evening is popular.

This lovely pub is in the Suffolk village of Chelmondiston, nice big car park with disabled bays. You do have to register your car at the bar when you arrive. We have been there for Sunday Lunch three times already and I know there will be more visits. It is a short drive from Ipswich on the Shotley Peninsula but well worth the effort. Welcoming, friendly and comfortable with a relatively small menu but includes something for most requirements. There is a 'fixed price' for 2 or 3 courses but they are delicious.

After all the Tripadvisor ratings we were a bit disappointed. The service was excellent and the prices fair but the Indian starters and mains were rather disappointing, and could be bettered in most "proper" Indian restaurants. The waiter explained that in order to satisfy local demand they did not do spicy. Unfortunately this resulted in rather bland food. If the chef was a bit more adventurous with spicing the food would be more appealing.

We were meeting up with a friend from Northern Ireland and decided that Chelmo would be a good location. The booking procedure was good. The parking was easy and good. The welcome was very friendly. Everywhere was clean and well presented. The choice of wines - we three all went for wine by the glass - was extensive. The food choice for a Sunday Lunch included both traditional roasts plus a few more adventurous offerings and was very good indeed. The service was friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and not at all intrusive. We will definitely return when next in the area.

Met friends at the Pub before going for a walk along the river. We were warmly greeted and it’s dog friendly, she got two biscuits from the barman to settle her in. The pub is lovely inside, spotlessly clean and welcoming. The food was lovely I had the steak sandwich from the lunch menu, wife had the fish ginger sandwich and friends had sticky chicken wings. The food was great as was the choice of drinks. Definitely recommend, especially if you don’t fancy the chaos of the Butt and Oyster car park beside the river. We’ll definitely be coming back and I’d recommend it.

We had an absolutely fantastic meal here today, warm welcome by friendly staff, we had two courses for a very reasonable £27, most of us had roast dinners (excellent food, the beef was so tasty, gravy was to die for) my husband had fish and chips which was also cooked really well. I’m fussy about my Sunday roasts and this one really hit the mark. Desserts were delicious too. Dogs were welcomed. Can’t recommend this place enough!

After thoroughly enjoying a Friday Thali night, and other evening meals, we had to give Sunday roast a try (actually suggested by my son). Great choice. He started with chicken wings, succulent tamarind glazed and finger licking good. I went for the amazing amazing prawns with chorizo perfect flavours. Not very imaginative I know but both us went for the Suffolk sirloin beef bathed in a red jus, roast potatoes cooked just right (crispy on outside, soft in middle) and Yorkshire puddings. Ideally cooked for me, although the lad prefers them softer. Honestly, it tasted amazing, very generous portions of beef cooked superbly. The vegetables came separately so we could pick what we wanted. They included glazed carrots, parsnips, cabbage and cauliflower. The empty plates spoke volumes. I'm not huge sweet person but even the lad couldn't manage a third course, although he was sorely tempted by the chocolate brownie, which he knew was excellent from previous experience. The warm friendly service, in a wonderful room, busy but not overcrowded, was top notch. There is also decent outside patio space for the better weather. The Red Lion continues to be one of he best food venues in Suffolk (and north Essex) with its outstanding produce cooked to perfection. Plenty of free customer car parking (easy to register on arrival) quality toilets, and lovely staff. Best to book but walk ins are catered for without a problem. Dogs and children welcome with well behaved owners.

Visited the pub again and it was an amazing experience. Our kids had great fun, played around and enjoyed their food. I served Bengali monkfish curry with rice, aubergine Bhaja and tiger prawn pakora which was absolutely delicious and my husband had the best beef burger ever. Their cips are amazing, we ordered extra portion with truffle oil and parmezan as we couldn't stop eating. Generous portions and nice plating. Staff was very kind and food came in good time, while we had a nice glass of Proseco. I recommend this pub to everyone looking to have a great time with family eating good quality and tast food.

Not the same as before. We were given just one menu ..set menu used for Sunday only ,we requested if could just have one corse as we are small eaters so been advised that it is possible ..to our surprise when the bill came ,we had 3 fish and chips and 2 roast ..guess over £120 which I found it really pathetic and suggested this new owners are ripping off the locals so I question the owners to clarify why we were charged £21 for one fish and chips when in their normal menu is advertised as £17 which I believe it is still really high…been told that this is because it is Sunday and their fish and chips it is sourced locally and all that …guess what the tartar sauce did contradict them as was bought in so….really disappointed and we never will go back again as we feel like this new owners are after the money more than building a good reputation with the locals …

We have visited the Red Lion at Chelmondiston many times over the years when it was under different ownership and were never disappointed. We were looking forward to trying a new Indian style slant during our lunch time visit on Friday. We eat out regularly at many different restaurants in the area and have never had occasion to question the standard of food or service. In fact this is the first critical review we have ever written. When we arrived there was only one other table with people eating which should have sounded alarm bells. We had a pint of lager which was chilled and 250 ml of white wine which was at room temperature to. A carafe of water was bought to the table that was warm and had no ice. We ordered the crispy squid with aioli followed by Bengali monkfish curry, coconut rice, aubergine bhaja, tiger prawn pakora. The squid was so undercooked that the batter was still anaemic and the squid itself wasn’t soft. We were hoping for better things with the main course. The monkfish was cooked but still had the membrane on, the sauce was bland and uninteresting. All we could taste was turmeric. The aubergine bhaja was just 3 slices of aubergine fried with no spices despite being told they would include spice. The prawn pakoras didn’t resemble any pakoras that we had eaten before and were just frozen prawns dipped In a very thin batter again with no spices that we could taste. The whole meal was uninspiring and we would have expected far more monkfish for the £22 per head for the main course. It was just half a small section of the tail fillet. We explained to the front of house our concerns and all that was offered was more wine. The owner apparently had been contacted and we were promised a phone call but when the bill arrived there was no discount and looking at the bill we were charged for 300 ml of wine rather than the 250 ml. The only reduction on the bill was for 125 ml of wine - £4. We definitely wouldn’t recommend eating here.

Firstly I would say what a beautiful pub with an amazing interior and the way they have maintained the cleanliness of the pub is just immaculate. The perfect experience of hospitality and an amazing front of the house staff, i personally find it better than butt & oyster down the road compared with food, hygiene n service. The Red lion have plenty of dishes for Vegan and Vegetarian which i haven't found in any of the pubs near by this place so far. Me and my friend visited last week we ordered 'Grilled Artichoke Bruschetta' and my friend had 'Sticky Chicken Wings' as a starter what an absolute mouth watering starter it was so delicious!! we just couldn't wait to order our main course I had 'Monkfish Curry' and my friend had 'Smoked Chicken lasagna' the presentation of both the dishes was top notch, we both were so full the portion of the food was quite big and that too in a cheap price!! Eventually we both shared pudding 'Banoffee pie with caramelised banana ' which was very yummy!! I would rate 10 a must try pudding. I recommend you all give the Red lion a try you won't regret it all. The best pub in Suffolk!! Thanks you Red lion for making my day will definitely going to visit again. Many thanks

Visited The Red Lion today on Xmas Eve. Have not been for a few years and thought it would be nice to have a meal locally. Forgot what a lovely building and interior it is. The waitress took us to our table, lovely lady. She recommended choices on the menu which was great, Our starters were ok, but felt they could improve the salmon and chicken liver salad. Our main courses however really great, and desserts very nice indeed!! The only thing I thought was a little disappointing was when a customer came up to speak to the owner about another local establishment in a rather derogatory way,and the owner decided to comment about the place negatively, not very nice to hear that local businesses are not supporting each other!! I suggest The Red Lion has background music, as that is what it lacks in atmosphere. Then that way we would not of heard such a disappointing conversation in such trying times!!!Also was made aware that they reopened at 6.00pm and felt like we had to go, I understand it’s a very long day on a shift but as we are about to go into Tier 4, you need to make your customers feel there is no need to rush.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion and one imagines the experience for ‘THEM’ was less than satisfactory. Please note however a lack of any dissent since 2015.!?For the rest of us 10/10 ‘full marks’ reviewers, The Red Lion in Chelmo’ is quite simply THE best eating house for anybody traveling within 20 miles.....or indeed beyond. Many (MANY)! Visits later we have yet to book lunch or dinner with less than an “OMG ....now THAT was awesome food” comment Add that to impeccable service and a more than comfortable ambiance and you will have an experience to REPEAT ..... often. An added treat is the owners ‘get involved’ by taking note of every comment from ‘Starters to coffee’ thus ensuring NOBODY is left in any doubt this restaurant IS “simply the best’’

However, a glass of the delicious South African red helped to pass the time. Our meals were well worth the wait. Veal cooked to perfection, served with a delectable bubble & squeak and (presumably) local bacon: Duck with pommes dauphinoise and wilted spinach. The piece de resistance was the shared hazelnut Bavarois with praline topping. Definitely one not to be bypassed.

Three of us had lunch here and enjoyed our meal. The menu was diverse and the portions very large! Unfortunately we mostly all had the same (fish and chips!) so can’t comment on many of the dishes but other diners’ meals looked equally good. The batter on the fish was light, the cod was perfectly cooked and moist and the chips were crispy and puffy. We also had vegetable bhajis which were extremely tasty. We didn’t have room for dessert! Stylish decor in muted tones and friendly hosting by Mandy. The only slight negative was a rather long wait due to a busy restaurant with only two people serving and the acoustics - we were in a small room to the right of the bar at the back which was full, and it was quite hard to hear ourselves and (not listen to other conversations!). We should have asked to move into another room but no matter. (To be fair we were with a person who is hard of hearing so it was more difficult). Overall it was worth the trip from Colchester and I’d like to go back to try the cheese plate and sticky toffee pudding next time!

Thirty seven members joined together at The Red Lion for a fabulous evening. We were warmly welcomed with Prosecco on arrival and were shown to our tables once everyone had arrived. We had all pre-chosen from the menu and nothing was too much trouble. One of our number had not chosen a starter because of her allergy but she was offered smoked salmon instead which she loved. Other starters were soup, king prawn skewers and wonderful duck salad. Freshly made bread was brought to us which was very good. The main courses were excellent as well, people enjoying the pork fillet gnocchi, cod fillet, Hake and risotto. We were given enough time between courses to enjoy one another’s company. The desserts included a superb cheese platter, lemon posset, and sticky toffee pudding. The meal was rounded off with coffee or tea according to people’s wishes.

Me and my partner treated the in laws to dinner, told them to pick wherever they’d like and they picked here. We’d never been here before but we wasn’t at all disappointed! The staff are so friendly and welcoming. The place was quiet but it was nice & cosy. We asked for a booth table and they were more than happy to arrange it for us. And the food was - OMG - literally amazing. Very reasonably priced too!! Cannot fault this place at all! Would definitely recommend and we will be back!! Thank you so much

The greeting you get when you first walk in sets the tone of your time in this wonderful pub. But don't think this is a normal pub. The decor and surroundings are first class, the service extraordinary and the food simply wonderful.

We came to the Red Lion Tuesday evening. Having been before (last year) we knew how good it was! The food was amazing and offered generous portion sizes. The recommended wine was lovely and the front of house staff worked effortlessly and smoothly to ensure a pleasant evening was had by all. The young waitress Molly ran the front of house excellently and couldn’t have been more helpful. Definitely recommend.

We had set out to eat at another pub down the road, but couldn't even park, so my clever daughter had already googled local pubs in the area "just in case" and recommended we came here. We are so glad we did! What a gem of a find! From the superb, attentive, timely service, to the quality of the food, price, portion size ... we could not fault it! We were delighted, a very happy family lunch that exceeded our expectations. We will be back and very soon, thank you Red Lion!

This was the second visit within a few weeks. The first was with a friend on her birthday and then a family visit. Both times the staff were very welcoming. The interior was very clean, light and comfortable. A great choice of menu. Our starters were smoked prawns, smoked salmon and asparagus with garnish & egg coated in panko crumbs. Mains were cod in chorizo & tomato sauce, liver & bacon and fish and chips. Desserts were sticky toffee pudding, praline cheesecake. Top marks for fantastic tasty food and attentive service. I would highly recommend The Red Lion and look forward to returning with friends.

Visited here once again with a girlfriend for a belated birthday lunch and was not disappointed. My friend had the Pork Fillet and I chose the Hake fillet. Only downside with mine was there were several bones in the fillet, which I reported to the waitress, as this might have been a problem for anyone with less than good eyesight or, indeed, anyone believing a fillet would be without bones! We both had excellent desserts and 2 175ml Pinot Gris Rose. The bill came to £51.10.

We only intended to pop into The Red Lion for a quick coffee following a walk at Pin Mill yesterday. What a great discovery! If I’m being honest I don’t think the frontage of the pub does it true justice. As soon as we walked through the doors we received a friendly greeting. The pub has a warm, comfortable and contemporary feel to it. All staff were polite and super efficient. Having seen the menus were felt compelled to accompany our coffee with some food! Food was amazing. We will certainly be back to try out more of the menu! How wonderful to find such a super pub which is able to produce beautifully prepared food, using local ingredients without over inflated prices.

My wife and I stayed at The Little Barn on Saturday and it was absolutely fabulous! From the moment we arrived Mandy made us feel very welcome and was a great host. We had supper at The Red Lion that evening and the food and drink were of excellent quality. Both the pub and accommodation is well thought out with great attention to detail. We would certainly return when we are next in Suffolk.

We had a one night stay in the Little Barn. Fantastic modern accomodation with every facility you could wish for. The DIY breakfast was brilliant with quality food and masses of it. Could have fed 4 people! The welcome when we arrived from Mandy was warm and during our stay we felt that nothing was too much trouble. We ate in the Red Lion on the Saturday night and the food was great. The staff were attentive and friendly and again Mandy was there checking all was ok. Great place, great food and beer, great weekend. Thanks.

As a pool player for this pub I'm in here most days. What makes this pub the place to be is the character, the charm, the staff who make it such a cosy place to frequent. The food is amazing, my favourite by far is the roast dinners. Massive fan of then. The staff too are friendly and accommodating, even playing pool they come over and talk to you ask you about your day ect, their general attitude is very positive and it makes the experience that much better. I can't imagine going anywhere else. Keep up the great work!

Michael and Sheila have gone although the new "lady of the house" is actually Sheilas daughter. I appreciated we are in troubled times with a lot of pubs cutting back but a very limited menu will not impress previous customers, although the fish couldn't have been fresher. A big no is the owners children having the run of the pub, just imagine "grumpy" Michaels comments!!!.
