We were recommended to eat here by Mike at Dorwyn Manor, where we were stopping for the night. An excellent recommendation as the food, service and atmosphere is great. We would definitely eat here again when we next visit the area.

As an American tourist traveling with young kids, this place was a very serendipitous find! Food was tasty - the salmon and cheddar cake especially. They had an interesting selection of ciders and beers. And of course, the atmosphere was great! We ate on top of a glass-enclosed well from the 1600s, while staring out the window at neolithic monuments. How cool!

We visited this nice, traditional pub in a beautiful setting on Friday 23rd August. I enjoyed the rump steak sandwich. The very small side of thin fries was lovely and crispy. The serving staff were friendly and accommodating despite some members of our party arriving late for our booking slot. Would have been nice to be offered sauces and cutlery when our meals arrived, but overall, it was a very good experience, and staff did really well with the extremely busy service.

Went for breakfast this morning in the rain. We were very well received, they very happily changed the table size as we had more people coming. Brilliant with children's request for squash, plus replacement after a "little accident" meant the table and floor had an extra clean.! The food was great, staff were wonderful, the service was great, welcome was great. Can't recommend them enough.

This pub has a captive audience because it's the only one in Avebury, a hot spot for tourists, locals who fancy a lovely walk and dog walkers. As such, it's busy and it charges premium prices, but for lacklustre food. Eg £23.99 for shepherds pie! Literally the Ivy Brasserie charges the same for shepherds pie!!! It was understaffed when we visited and I note that other reviews say the same. Queues at the bar for ordering drinks and food. Only 2 staff behind a busy bar. The beers were good, esp the Green King Level Head. Very refreshing & superb flavour. The food was disappointing. Rump steak sandwich sounds great on the menu, with lots of tasty extras. When it arrived, the accompanying chips were just a few. It came with an espresso cup full of merlot and beef dripping gravy - sounds great, but it was luke warm, bland brown gloop. I couldn't use any of it sadly. Unlike the description on the menu, there were no caramelized onions in the sandwich. No crispy onion in there either. It was basically a beef sandwich with a tiny smear of mayo. When I raised it with the staff I was told they had run out of onions! They were very nice and were trying hard, but were running flat out and the kitchen needs to up it's game. I'm glad we didn't risk the £23.99 shepherds pie! It was an irritating end to what had been a lovely walk.

Although the building itself is beautiful, and the staff generally very courteous and polite, I cannot help but give a poor review. The food was very poor quality. I've had better in most Wetherspoons. A £20 meal consists of two severely overcooked and miniscule chicken cutlets, a dry potato with nothing on it and a pitiful side salad that had wilted into a pile of sludge from the heat of the plate. The coronation sandwich was also criminally underfilled. Massively overpriced to the point of blatant price-gouging. It was immediately evident that what little staff was working there were overworked and understaffed. Every member of staff looked completely frazzled. Food was dropped, orders were forgotten, and I didn't see a server in the dining area throughout my entire visit. I went to the bar to grab a few packets of butter for my dry potato and instead of just grabbing them, I was told they must be ordered through the kitchen. The butter was never brought to the table, but since I didn't want to make a scene over a packet of butter, I just ate it. Now, I really want to emphasize that this doesn't seem to be the fault of the staff present, but instead the organization of the business as a whole. Normally I wouldn't be this adamant about the quality of the food or the service. I'd just clap my hands together, say "oh well" in a sigh, and be on my merry way, never to return, but because this pub is situated in such an important spot, and seems to be the only pub within a considerable distance, I can't help but think that whoever is in charge needs to do some serious revaluation.

Beautiful setting within the stone circle at Avebury. Pub seemed short staffed though, there was only ever one person behind the bar and there were tedious queues as well as empty glasses etc. building up all over the place.(Friday 26/07). The few staff that were there were polite and efficient. Would probably visit again as it's the only pub in Avebury and a drink after a long walk is great. The bus stop to get home is attached to the pub sign, so that's a real bonus. You can finish up your drink as you see the bus approaching in the distance.

The food is amazing with a nice selection of lagers and real ales. They really do deserve more tips folks. I say it again they really do deserve more tips. Please ignore some of the negetive reviews on here because Avebury Stone Circle and the Red Lion pub is a fascinating place that deserves more credit than is due by a long shot. Most people that leave negetive comments need to give there head a wobble, get a life and go take yourselfs for a prober walk around Avebury because to be honest the place is better when your not here. A good Pub, and the only one in the village. A Chef and Brewer with some lovely specials on the menu. Haunted wells and history here with old photos on most walls. No wait for service, but although the food was good it was a little slow to arrive even when not busy..I like food chips and recommend theirs. We may just have been unlucky. Good selection of beer, gin etc plusany soft drinks. Nicely done bar area. Free parking which is a real bonus. Seating outside has sunshades inside are tablets service as well as informal areas with order at the bar. After the walks this is ideal for a quick bite and a drink. I have been visiting this pub since 1976 always enjoyed it and was keen to impress my friends. Very dissatisfied. They lead you into the back of their food area ! All faux decor which is the runway to the toilets! The window overlooks the car park! Tables so situated your always looking at someone masticating!.at the rear is a closed off bar covered with dirty glassware!. On entering the front bar there was a barking dog, and a woman laying out under the window in her bare feet!. I asked for tomato juice, they informed me they were out of ice, and had put sliced lime in it!.now the meal, the steak and ale pie must have be resuscitated from frozen mass production 80% indifferent pastry and indifferent meat at the bottom, the carrots had been boiled to death and the already yellowing broccoli remained yellow when cooked. Chips were lifeless. I returned my meal accordingly and had a refund by a very courteous lady a polite staff. The Kilmer room the only place to eat, was closed off. Very sad day for me .

We arrived on a crowded weekday afternoon, but the Red Lion was very accommodating and able to seat us within 10 minutes. Very comfortable indoor and outdoor seating with plenty of space. The atmosphere was inviting and cozy. However, the food situation was another story. First, i made the mistake of mentioning to the server that I am lactose intolerant and trying to avoid dairy products. She launched into full on paternalistic mode and MADE me order from an electronic menu on her ipad. When i tried to order an item that was not on their dairy free menu, i was NOT allowed to. Excuse me? I am an adult, i have lactase tablets, i am capable of caring for my own allergies, but this employee's behavior was simply insulting. So i ordered an allegedly dairy free sandwich off their allegedly dairy free menu. The sandwich was probably the worst thing I'd ever consumed - a suspicious mash up of curried beans, green peppers and unidentifiable cooked vegetables in an even more suspicious looking white "sauce". Which turned out to be a complete joke, because about an hour after consuming this sandwich (it was the only thing i ate) i was in classic amd distinctive abdominal pain that i ONLY experience after consuming dairy products. I had trusted them that this was a dairy free sandwich, which it clearly was not. This unpleasant dietary experience ruined my time walking the Avebury henge site as I had to rush to find a toilet where i proceeded to be sick. So, thanks a lot Red Lion for ruining my trip to Avebury. Your so-called dairy free menu is NOT.

This place has a lovely atmosphere. Many people have stated that they do not like having to enter the registration details of their car in order to park at this place. I think that it might be to preclude people who do not attend this place from using it purely as a car park, making it difficult for people who have actually paid and are frequenting the pub to find a spot in which to park. There a plenty of interesting things to see, as is evidenced in my photographs, which I hope that readers of this review like. We stopped for a quick drink before visiting the Monoliths. We then returned to have another drink and the members of staff took a genuine interest in greeting people and entering into conversations. Nice, friendly pub. Food was lovely and not too expensive. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Will be dining there again on our next visit. No complaints.

Had an excellent lunch at the Red Lion. Huw looked after us very well. With my food alergy it is always a concern but I was looked after very professionally.

Our roasts (pork, sirloin beef) were tough to the point of inedibility and had to be sent back. Service was very slow. It spoiled our time together.

My totally impartial fair review. Not good or bad. Distinctly average pub food at the now expected ‘bistro’ prices, portions definitely on the smaller side, we waited nearly an hour for food. Nice setting and we were able to get a table, we were able to have a venue for a good catch up with friends and satisfy our hunger. Wouldn’t rush back or recommend as we feel we could find somewhere more memorable close by. Grateful we didn’t drive as noticed the car park charging!

Very good food and value. Best to book a table as it can get busy. Friendly and helpful service from all the staff. Our waitress (Rachel) was excellent.

Cueing for 25 minutes, then being told no food is being served outside (why not put a simple sign?), ordered food on a table inside and after waiting more than 30 minutes being told the waiting time is more than 50 min (nothing was mentioned about this when ordering the food).. this level of service is ridiculously bad

"Deeply disappointed! My anticipation for my partner's birthday celebration turned into frustration upon arrival. We waited a grueling 20 minutes just to get our drinks, only to find my little boy's burger bun resembling a rock and the burger itself over-charred. Our party of three adults eagerly awaited our roast dinners for a staggering 45 minutes, only to be greeted by dishes that seemed to have emerged from the depths of a well. Stone-cold vegetables, dry meat, icy gravy, and Yorkshire puddings akin to solid rocks dashed our hopes of a satisfying meal. In the end, we had no choice but to leave, unable to stomach the food. A complete waste of time and money."

Loved this place! Funny story I met a lady at Heathrow Airport who like me lives in Australia( I'm a Pom!) We met up again at Swindon and called in here for a meal prior to exploring Stonehenge and Bath together.. We were both visiting family and friends back Home and really hit it off. Had a lovely meal there and amazing conversation. We had so much in common and this was the start of a great Soul mate friendship. We're now best friends and back in Australia now but take away such lovely memories of this place...our first meal together. Whis knows what the future brings...Lovelystaff to..x

It's not often that I get angry. My wife and I and two other couples met at the Red Lion in Avebury for lunch. We parked in the pub car park, went in, ordered drinks at the bar and then had lunch. The lunch was average to poor, but inexpensive. I have just received a £100 FINE for not paying £2 or £3 for parking. The signage at the entrance to the car park was unclear, and the staff in the pub made no effort to warn us to register our car, which would have avoided the fine. We saw no notices in the pub. So the lunch, which normally would have cost £90 has ended up costing £390.
