last summer while i was in the area working and had avery nice meal on two separate occasions and both nights the food was excellent (had the red lion burger 1st night and a meatfeast the next) both of which were absolutely delicious. Now i was down again before Christmas and had the meatfeast pizza and it was fantastic but on the second night i had the red lion burger 🤢🤮 it was absolutely disgusting i can only assume you had a child cooking that night as it was greasy tasted totally different to the one I'd had before and they didn't seem to care either. Won't be calling back in again

I had the misfortune to go here whilst waiting for takeaway from neighbouring tandoori restaurant. Bar full of foul mouthed locals. Am ex army but shocked by language even when family with 3 young kids arrived still continued with foul mouthed tirade. Locals were bunch of interbreds, all over 50 years old. Landlady had absolutely no inclination to stop them.Guy with foul mouthed locals was probably landlord, when a real ale ran out gave instructions to young girl behind bar how to change barrel. Looked as if he had been drinking all day, totally wasted. I got here about 6pm so not even late in the day. PS. This is totally genuine review, have never experienced such utter lack of control by licence, avoid, avoid avoid. PS bet if landlord responds he will say “ not normal day, caught us at unusual time, it’s a great place have hundreds of good reviews” Don’t think so, would like to say try for yourself but please don't, you will regret it. PPS tandoori was excellent.

After a long day travelling from London I was dragged out to the pub, and why not. Ordered food as I’m on a strict diet (Pinocchio). Ordered a Chicken and Bacon Salad……. Wow. I told the waitress (Jess) that the lettuce was amazing and she looked at me funny, not sure if it’s the norm to compliment lettuce but hey, it was nice lettuce. On the whole the meal was top notch. But the food is always good I just never thought of uploading a review to trip advisor in the staycation nation era.

After 1 hour 45 minutes we had really had enough of waiting. so we went again and was told 5 minutes. we soon received our food at 9. During waiting this long time no waiter came to the table to apologize or explain what had happened in the order. i will not be returning to this restaurant again as i find it needs to improve its customer service and how to treat customers.

We were a party of approx. 15 staying in a house nearby and looking for somewhere to have some lunch in celebration of a hen party. We had pre-ordered our food and arrived on time. The moment we sat down, we were told to order our drinks at the bar due to them being short staffed. They said that once more staff were in, they would be able to serve us at the table. This seemed odd given that they knew that there would be a large party so surely they would have prepared to have enough staff to accommodate us for the duration of the meal? Whilst half of the party were at the bar getting their drinks in, the food started to come out within minutes of us arriving. This resulted in food left to get cold. When everyone had got their drinks and come to sit down we realised that two meals had been forgotten about. The waitress apologised for this and said they would be about 10 minutes or so but instead of asking if they could get the girls a drink on the house as a way of apologising, there was no such offer. Once everyone had finished, the two missing meals were brought out by the chef but by this point it felt too little too late. We then waited for approx. 15/20 minutes before the waitress came out to ask if we were finished. I don’t want to be personal or rude but particularly in this role, it is not professional to be served by a waitress who is chomping loudly and openly at her chewing gum. The waitress clearly didn’t want to be there and had very poor customer service skills. We then waited another 15/20 minutes waiting for someone to come out and take our dessert orders. During this time no one had asked if we wanted more drinks. In the end one of the girls had to get up to go to the bar and ask for the desserts menus. After we had ordered, we waited another 15/20 minutes before the desserts were brought out. Unfortunately, although the food appeared to be good, one member of the party was actually ill with a bad stomach immediately after eating their salad which can only point to something which she ate during the meal (she has no history of any intolerances etc.). Overall, very disappointing meal out for such a special occasion. It really did feel like the staff could not be bothered for us to be there and couldn’t care less whether we enjoyed our visit there or not. When asked by the waitress if we had started drinking yet and we responded no, the waitress said ‘ oh good’ and again when some girls said they didn’t want dessert, the waitress said ‘good’. When getting up to pay the bill it was clear that the staff didn’t have a clue what was on the menu and for how much, asking one of the girls how much her dessert was? Just very odd service in what could be a lovely pub. Disappointing, won’t be returning or recommending.

Met with friends for a post moving (Essex to Chulmleigh) event. Despite being very busy our bar orders and table service was great. Our pizzas were fresh from the wood fired oven and were excellent. The only negative was that apparently that part of England does not know what a Margherita pizza is. Having heard so much about the 'Red Lion Pizza', we'd kind of held off visiting for fear of being disappointed. Having now visited, I can now admit this place could be dangerous. Dangerous because we'll want to go back again and again. The pub itself has a wonderful feel about it. It's a local pub but with a broader appeal. I hope that makes sense. What I mean is, it's not one of those pubs you walk in and everyone stares at you - but you walk in, knowing it's a small town, but get a feeling of acceptance straight away.

The Red Lion seem to excel in the pizzas and the meat calzone never fails to disappoint. It's very very filling and I always struggle to eat a dessert afters. The children's meals are good value too and good portion sizes. You get a drink, meal and ice cream for £6.50, although this has risen from £5 from when we first started going. The only criticism I would say is to check the bill - probably about 80% of the time, we were charged extra for the children's drinks which were included in the meal deal. The staff were apologetic, but it did happen on numerous occasions so certainly not a one off mistake. Other than that, we've never had a bad meal there and often take friends and family there too. I'd be more than happy to have this as my local!

Superb value carvery on a Sunday. That isn't to say food isn't available at other times, they also make the best Pizza with wide variety of toppings on a crispy but not dried out base that I have come accross - available eat in or takeaway, which in this out of the way area is a great bonus. Haven't statyed herem but visitors who have had said it is very comfortable, although don't expect breakfast in your pyjamas as that is taken at the dairy opposite - and very goot it is too.

After seeing great reviews for authentic homemade pizza we decided this was worth a visit...and dog friendly which was a plus. Service was great, staff friendly, pub lovely (if a little chilly) but overall a great experience.

Although we have a holiday cottage near Chulmleigh, this is the first time we have eaten in The Red Lion.We went as a couple about 6.30pm and decided to eat in the bar as the restaurant (which looked lovely) was empty at the time although there were a number of tables booked out for later. The friendly staff showed us their extensive menu and we chose Chicken in Gorgonzola sauce and Rib eye steak as main courses. The pub was decorated ready for Halloween and used by lots of locals (a good sign)

Wanted to meet up with friends and booked blind. What a charming restaurant, busy, so glad we booked and the food was superb. Unusual range of offerings, but including the traditional. The steak I had could have been cut with a butter knife, and tasted great, all local produce. Staff were friendly and attentive. Prices very reasonable, will certainly visit again.

Cracking pub in the heart of Chulmleigh with a good selection of pub food and fresh pizzas which can also be take-away . Some fine real ales and a nice atmosphere

We just returned from a week in Devon and our two visits to the Red Lion were a real highlight. Right in the centre of small Chulmleigh is this pub with just the right mix of traditional and modern. Service was super friendly, the menu refreshingly varied - you could eat traditional British, but also Italian - and the food nicely presented and delicious. Highly recommended if you are in the area!

We stopped off for a drink and snack. Clad we did. Good choice of toasted sandwiches, pasties and sausage rolls and cakes. Teas and coffees to pick from too. What I liked best was that it was roomy. You weren't squeezed in and felt relaxed. Nice place to sit and chill and chat.

Everything about this place was amazing! Food tasted great and staff were very accommodative (had a toddler with us). Nice little corner of toys too to keep the little ones busy.

Started to worry when the bar area smelled of dogs and fish. The restaurant was cold and tired. The tables in need of a coat of varnish. The room musty smelling. I do understand it's a listed building, but it could be so much better with nice candles/flowers I had viewed some excellent food photos on the website, unfortunately this is not how it is....The staff were uninterested and didn't know anything about the wines that they served. A smile and a warm welcome would not go a miss. The menu is the restaurant is slightly different to on line. Some of the same dishes, but in a more basic format without the extra touches that made it stand out. My terrine was starting to curl up at the end and the foccacia? a peice of toast. The cravettes were overcooked and difficult to peel, mushy at best. The Thai chicken was boiled chicken thigh, that was grey and tasteless. Even the feta salad was bland due to the ice cold tomatoes, cut into large chunks. The Dover sole had the consistency on wet tissue, completely overcooked and we gave up eating it as it wouldn't come off the bone. The fish and chips and the burger were average. Overall, a special night out it wasn't and over priced. The position overlooking the sea was lovely, though, but feel they have probably become complacent due to other good reviews, location and being listed.

Wonderful place to stay in a beautiful setting. Richard and John were both lovely genuine people, we had a fantastic time learning to fly fish with Richard. The accommodation was excellent. Look forward to our next visit!

Great location, great food and super lovely staff. Good value for money too! A lovely dining setting and still family friendly. We visited with our 10 month old baby and they made us feel really welcome and was lovely with him.
