I like to try the fish & chips when i eat at a venue I haven’t been to before so I can compare it with previous venues,so that’s exactly what I had. Very well cooked and good portion size. The only criticism is tartar sauce in a sachet that was awkward to open. The pub was busy which is a good sign and I’d be quite happy to eat here again

After a bit of a blip whilst going through a few chefs, I am pleased to say the food is back to being great! I’ve been here for Fish Friday at lunchtime and had the mixed plate which included huge juice prawns, goujons, lovely gently battered fish etc. We went with fries and onion rings too. Also went in the evening and my mother enjoyed their homemade lasagne and their garlic prawns were yummy too, as was the hunters chicken, and not forgetting delicious naughty waffles with toffee sauce. Service is always helpful and friendly. Manager Sarah is fantastic and so is the owner Jackie. Both will bend over backwards to accommodate you.

This was the worst pub lunch I’ve had in a long time. Had scampi, chips and peas and the chips were hard even though they looked cooked, the peas were poor quality and the scampi was unlike anything I had before although they were ok. The sticky toffee pudding was the best aspect of the meal. Service was pleasant if a bit hit and miss.

We booked this establishment back in September, after experiencing a superb meal. Little did we know that the property was to change hands even though a £10 non refundable deposit per person had to be paid in advance and menus chosen. There had been no communication by the new owners explaining the situation therefore, we had no reason to believe anything had changed. On the night I started to get concerned when there was only 1 or 2 persons in the restaurant section. However we all entered were greeted and shown to the table. To begin with, we had to ask if the music coming from a speaker, being directly beside our table could be turned down (unable to converse or hear it was so loud). This took 3 requests. All dining had been previously booked (with the previous owners) therefore we expected to get what we ordered. When the starters arrived, one of our party who ordered soup received a third of a small bowl full. This was returned and a full bowl was received. The prawn and avocado cocktail arrived minus any avocado whatsoever. The main courses xmas dinner turkey or pork loins arrived. Well, eack turkey dinner had a variety of vegetables some had sprouts others didn't. Some had one sort of cabbage others had different. The meat was dry however the roast potatoes were passable. The two having pork loins had the meat on a large pile of mustard mash AS WELL AS roast potatoes. The meat I was advised, was tough and unpleasant and left. The deserts were a joke. Xmas puddings were circular and about 2" wide and half to three quarters of an inch deep. Some of the guests had theoretically black forest cheesecake which was the smallest wedge I have ever seen, about 2 and half inches long by and inch wide and less than an inch deep. There was no sign of any black forest interest at all. I wouldn't advise anyone to eat here in any way, waste of money. On top of which this trip cost us £60 by taxi. This would have been worth it with the previous owners, but not now.

We went to this pub to take advantage of the eat out help out scheme. Little did we know that while you pay less for food, they will over charge you for drinks. They charge £5.10 for a pint of lager and £5 for 2 soft drinks for kids, which should be 50% discounted anyway. So would the kids drinks be £10 without the discount??? Ridiculous. On top of that, this pub is only worth going if you stay outside (considering you like bad food). If the weather is bad and you have to stay inside, it's awful. Just a few tables around the bar, a bad smell of alcohol and not much to eat. Dirty toilets with no hand drying facility, pretty shocking considering these times when hygiene is so important. First time we went there and definitely last.

We went for lunch and were surprised by the cheap menu of the day. We all three chose the Chinese chicken stir fry, so couldn't compare it to any other dishes. The chicken was bright pink for some unknown reason and very dry with a minimum of sauted vegetables. The rice was also dry. Not a very successful meal and we wondered if that was why it was cheap. We will not be back.

'Twas my pre birthday treat and I wanted fish n chips. How pleasantly surprised was I to decide on ordering this dish here for the first time. @ £11.50 it didn't break the bank, I loved a good serving of perfectly cooked chips and mushy peas. I've had fish n chips in about 25 restaurants across four countries this year and payed as much as £17/£18. So here I am a couple of miles from home with clearly I found the winning dish of all of these. The doombar ale was perfect and the Shiraz. Thankyou also to the patient skillfull staff for putting up with us, you are from the top draw! My daughter says the burger was also excellent and the salmon with new potatoes was notably worthwhile according to my wife. All of this was good value for money topped with FREE DESSERTS on a Wednesday night. It can't get better.

The Old Red Lion was a bit intimidating to be honest. Now that it has been refurbished, we had been in a couple of times for a drink and really liked the new decor and relaxed atmosphere. So booked a small party dinner. We were a group of 6 adults and 2 children and booked a table on 3rd June. Waitress was lovely but really became exceptional when we mentioned that one of our group was gluten free. She went far and above the call of duty double checking every ingredient in the special (lambs liver, gravy, home fries etc all gluten free) and had the dessert selection already sorted for the same guest. Another of our party requested a steak to be cooked blue, and she immediately went to check with the chef whether he was comfortable with this. He was, steak was cooked perfectly per request. We had a fantastic dinner, we ordered a wide range of food which was all served at the same time and perfectly cooked, drinks were reasonably priced and it's clear that all food is really freshly prepared on site. When asked if anything could be improved, in all honestly we had to say no. We will definitely be returning!!!
