A lovely quaint little pub with very friendly atmosphere and staff. The food was delicious and very good portions, very filling. The steak and ale pie, was high quality. It was basically a steak in pastry. To top it all off, they had a very friendly doggo that greeted us at the door, very calmly I'll add, and it also visited us a few times over our short stay. The staff seemed to care more about the dogs health than my brief bond with it though so I wasn't allowed to give it a piece of pie 🤣 Lovely place, great food, nice atmosphere. What more do you want.

Food 4/5 - ordered steak and chips. Got a very big portion which was fantastic. Steak was undercooked but edible and otherwise tasty. Chips were very crispy Price 5/5 - for the big portions the price was great Atmosphere 4/5 - atmosphere was great but the pub dog kept weaving in and out underneath the table and going up to each person looking for food. As cute as the dog is, it was a bit uncomfortable especially if one isn't a dog person. Service 5/5 - Very efficient and friendly staff Overall 4.2/5 - great place for lunch. Maybe avoid if you don't like being pestered by a dog whilst you're eating!

This pub is fab! We booked for 24 of us for lunch to celebrate my dad's 80th birthday as a surprise for him and it could not have been better. When my dad got stuck in traffic they delayed the starters, when we asked about possibly hiding somewhere they hid us all in a back room. Service was excellent, the food absolutely delicious and the portions huge! A huge thank you to Tanya and Richard for making it such a perfect celebration.

Really disappointing visit to The Red Lion Heytesbury today. Sunday roast dinners came out with cold (below room temperature) Yorkshire puddings, cold plates, and gravy. A small dish of veg was put on the table (not enough for the 5 people), alongside, a dish of baked creamy leeks. No serving spoons provided. Reported the issues to the Manger, who blamed the cold items on us being sat in the garden. He made excuses and dismissed our comments. Apparently, the pub does not warm their plates due to ‘health and safety’ concerns! Cold Yorkshire puddings were returned to the kitchen, Manger informed us, he had thrown them in the bin and would not be providing replacements. We understand that mistakes happen, but the Mangers attitude was really bad. Unfortunately, we cannot encourage others to eat at this pub.

This was such a great find. On our way to Glastonbury, we stopped here on the off chance I had the pie from the specials,my wife had the chicken madras. Pub was very busy, but food arrived quickly. Piping hot, well presented, and being able to eat outside in the sun was a treat (nice garden) The curry was, by the reports, lovely. The pie, chips, and peas hearty, tasty, a d just very well worth the money. This was a really nice stop. We'll try to do it again. Highly recommended

Great little find. Big bonus was we were able to book a table as we were meeting family travelling from different counties. We will definitely be returning and making a go to pub to meet up. Thank you and Happy New Year to you all.

What a Pub should be: Friendly and helpful staff, nice atmosphere and best of all tasty, great value food in copious quantities. Stopped here yesterday and had a steak at £13, easily twice as good as one I had paid £25 in Wilton a few weeks ago. My wife had the Steak & Ale pie...again massive portion and incredibly tasty. Well worth getting of the A36 if you are passing.

This is our local while staying very nearby. We were made to feel extremely welcome by the friendly staff, and was a perfect end to a long drive. We ate fish pie, steak and ale pie and a gammon steak. There was a small issue with the the gammon making my chips really greasy, but I resolved this by blotting them on a napkin. The staff couldn’t have been more apologetic. Would certainly recommend and would revisit if we were in the area again.

6 of our family visited the garden of The Red Lion on Saturday, just 1 week after new owners opened the pub after Lock Down. The staff were happy hard working and really attentive. I had the best steak I've ever eaten in a lovely garden setting, followed by home grown fruit compote. We had to wait a bit for the steaks to come out but that can be forgiven as the cover 19 restrictions slowed the bar and ordering down a bit. This didn't spoil what was a lovely evening out. Also a nice large garden for children to have some freedom without bothering others, currently being developed into a riverside setting..

Stayed for one night with my husband and six year old daughter after visiting Longleat Safari Park. The Landlord & landlady were both very friendly as were the locals. The room was small for a family room but suited us and although above the bar, the sound wasn't enough to disturb our sleep, it was a kind of relaxing background noise. We ate at the pub in the evening and for breakfast and the food was well cooked and enjoyable. The breakfast area was a little dark but that could have been because it was gloomy outside and felt a bit like a large hallway or waiting area rather than a room for eating in but that is just my opinion. We would stay again if we were in the area and needed accommodation.

This is the first time we have eaten at the Red Lion since it changed management. The Red Lion is basically a pub with tables. There are a number of locals who frequent the pub for a drink. However, the seating has been re-arranged to allow for more dining. We had a very nice evening meal. The menu selection is quite compact, but that was not a problem. They have stuck to tried and tested options e.g. fish and chips, burgers, prawn cocktail, garlic prawns etc. The service was good although it wasn't very busy when we went so not sure if the waitress/bar-lady could cope if it was really busy. The food was of a good quality and the quantity was very good (i.e. there was lots to eat). The cost for two people with starters and 2 beers was £40 which is not too bad.The ambience is still that of a pub, which cannot be changed very easily. We would definitely return, if we wanted a quick, no fuss meal.

Nice welcome & very pleasant staff member. Premises rather run down inside & out - no ambiance/atmosphere. Choice of 2 roasts - beef & chicken which actually turned out to be a grilled breast. Plenty of veg but were a little over cooked. Pub was a bit cold, although fire was lit you really had to sit right in front of it to get any benefit. A number of the desserts were sold out & as they seemed to be bought in I guess they were waiting for a new order rather than making more - ended up with a cheap quality ice cream. Kept rechecking the reviews vs the pictures because I can't correlate the reviews I've read & TA certificate of excellence with our own experience. Will not revisit

We were staying locally, three generations, and wanted a family pub where we could all find something we like to eat. The Red Lion is very family friendly and the staff very welcoming. The menu is typical pub grub, and the portions are enormous. The quality of the food is good, pub style food. It is not for those watching their weight! They could add to their appeal by introducing a couple more lighter items to their menu, as a lot of people simply don't want to eat huge meals any more.

Lots of young staff, not well trained or very friendly. The food was OK. Nice taste, small portions and London prices. £18 for fish without veg/potatoes etc seems a bit steep! £20 for house wine ( nothing special) come on guys you can do better than that. To be fair they appeared to be promoting themselves as a wedding venue with a large marque in the grounds and its probably about right for that type of event. It was a basic ploughman's, but the addition of grated cheese rather than a block or a selection of different blocks of cheese was different. We've eaten in both pubs in Heytesbury, but will return to the other for our next meal I think. When we arrived, the landlord was extremely friendly and came and had a chat, explained we were 20 mins early for lunch and said that things so take a bit longer as everything is homemade. We were more than happy with that, quality wins every time and that is what we got. Some of the ladies wanted some baguettes but were not quite hungry so he kindly said he would do them to takeaway! How nice! A few of us had cappucinos and said they were the niceest ones we had had in a long time! The food was lovely; I had a prawn mago baguette and it was so fresh and tasty. Another had an omlette which he said was "lush" and he is very fussy. My dad had the homemade burger. It was huge! What a welcome we received at this the friendliest of all English Pubs! The landlord 'Martin' was always attentive and met our every need whether it be food, drink or accommodation! When we left we truly felt like we were leaving behind family members not people we didn't know a week ago! We will definitely be returning again, staying at the Red Lion was a truly great experience and we can't wait to visit again... 10 out of 10 well done guys!

Amazing friendly B&B; The food all homemade &freshly; cooked, wish our local pub was of that standard! Really friendly family run business who deserves all the credit for all hard work they have put into this place. Thank you for such a enjoyable stay.

We wanted to have a drink in a beer garden with our kids- we were in the locality and this was the perfect spot. Peaceful, sunny, great beer and wine, lovely big garden at the back with play area (kids were happy) lots of decent seating and a viewing area of the River Wylye (hubby was happy!) and very pleasant landlord. Would definitely return of we were in the area again.

We booked for Sunday lunch and they were expecting us, the Barman was friendly. There was a good menu selection, we have plenty of options although we are vegetarians. our drinks were brought over to the table for us. I drank thatchers gold, J2O for my son and sparkling water for hubby. We had 3 rounds of drinks over the course of the meal, we ate jacket with cheese and beans, mushroom and onion omlette, and egg mayonnaise sandwich with a side of chips. We all finished off with chocolate sundae desserts and then coffees for grown ups. All delicious and we thought the price was very reasonable at £53 for the three of us.

Really nice fresh food. Between the two of us we had a "Red Hot Chilli Burger" and Hunter's Chicken -- we were both very happy. Puddings were delicious. Beer was great (I think they had a couple from Ringwood, and Sharp's Doom Bar). Service was good too.

Good Beer Guide entry for 2014 but was dissapointed to find only Ringwood and another non discript beer on. There are better pubs not in the guide. The beer that was on was ok for Ringwood, but nothing special. Didn't eat so can't comment on the food side of things.

After a lot of hard work by the landlord Martin and his family, the Red Lion has a fresh new look! New tables and chairs, newly painted, exposed herring bone brickwork on the bar, new curtains and lights. The banquette and new dining booths should be finished this week! Come and check it out!

I took my husband to the Red Lion as it was his birthday on a Friday evening - fortunately there weren't many diners as our reservation was in their diary for the following night, though they were very apologetic about this. My lasagne was unremarkable. My husband's steak was memorable in that it is the first time he can remember not finishing one - it was burnt and bitter from the grill. The vegetables, however, were surprisingly good. Unfortunately our experience didn't tempt us to stay for dessert and we beat a hasty retreat.

Food was good, but nothing extraordinary. Meet was a bit dry, desert was too sweet. We ordered from Sunday roast menu. On other days there’s a different menu, maybe that one is better.
