I have been to the black lion before and enjoyed everything about my visit. This is the first time with the new Landlord Gorden at the wheel. We only came to walk the dog around Back o Brook and have a beer. The beer Proper Job was excellent and saw other guests dining. It looked very nice and the ambience and decor of the pub made us decide to stop and have a meal. I have to say we enjoyed it very much and all in all had a lovely evening. Talked to locals and Gordon himself. Highly recommended.

Me and my husband came in here looking for an evening meal. The menu was good and our food was nice. Shame about the rude, sassy, short, blonde bar maid though. She was more interested in chatting up the locals than attending to any other customers. Very unprofessional. When she did eventually talk to us, she wasn't overly friendly and I think she needed some lessons in the manners department. Such a shame because the food was lovely but the atmosphere and service was not good! If you're a lad drinking who shows the barmaid any attention, then you're more likely to get served than if you want to eat!

I wasn't even more pleasantly surprised to find they allowed you to choose any starter or dessert from the main menu in this deal. The one thing that really impressed me was how well they cater for children. We went with our 2 year old. The children’s menu is very reasonable at £4.95 including a drink and an ice cream. The toilets were fantastic for children. As most parents will appreciate it can be a nightmare taking toddlers to public toilets but there was an alternating toilet seat including a small seat for children and a step so they could reach to wash their hands. Thank you for making our lunch so easy! I would definitely recommend.

Food ordered and we settled down in front of one of the 2 fires. Our food was well cooked and plentiful in portion size. By the time we were leaving, the pub was getting busier and the atmosphere was getting better. There's 3 areas in the pub, one of these was more restaurant than pub so if out more smartly dressed than what we were, 3 tables of 4 are available for the smartly dressed.

Slightly off our usual beaten track but tried The Red Lion as it was listed on a website listing dog-friendly establishments. A small pub, at least the bit we saw, but with two rooms so you could get away from the TV. Lovely to have a log fire lit on a chilly evening.Standard pub fare but served in an above average way. Calamari for him and deep-fried brie for me were served beautifully in bowls with ample salad and dips. Main courses were lamb shank for me which came on a bed of beautiful mashed potato that would have fed three people! The lamb was beautifully cooked - falling off the bone and melting in the mouth. His steak was cooked to his medium rare perfection. Lemon meringue pie for pudding was delicious.Limited tables so booking recommended. Oh, and don't trust your sat nav to get you there without taking you on quite a journey round the Staffordshire countryside - if it sends you towards Stony Lane, don't!! You'll end up on something even worse than a farm track.

All staff made a real effort with all their customers and couldn't do enough for you. There was a reasonable choice of food and the surroundings were delightful. It was well maintained with touches of charm, such as the tables having sewing peddles at the bottom. The price was very reasonable and worth every penny.Very much enjoyed our visit. Thank you for helping make our holiday.

Waterfall is a quintessential country village will a pub at its heart. I never understand pubs that deny Dogs or boots (or real people!) the Red Lion stands out for me... It's a comfortable friendly pub with great beers (and possibly food ) what really sets it apart is its connection with its community... It's not exclusive, all are welcome, I have been welcomed; but most importantly there IS a welcome! You could drive past the Red Lion as you head to Leak or Ashbourne but you are missing a trick. Most Sunday's it's full of friends, many with dogs, talking about the last escaped or one to come... Training dogs, dipping sheep and checking for TB (not everything is light!) it's England, all are welcome... Leave you prejudice and your guns at the door please and come and live a version of life in a beautiful community

We were passing through Waterfall one evening visiting a local farm on business, and hunger had set in... so thought we'd give it a try and were pleasantly surprised! The pub doesn't look much from the outside, but looks can be deceiving... the food was great and well priced, pub was clean and tidy and the family who run it are clearly very passionate about the place. Even though we turned up 10 minutes before the kitchen closed! Oh, and there are fantastic views when sat outside too!

Mid-week evening meal. Gorgeous Hunters Chicken and chips from heaven. Traditional pub ambience and service with a smile. On departure a chicken (a live one) was clamouring for admission to the pub. Just how fresh do you like your meat!! Great meal!

Lovely welcome from the young lady behind the bar, pub was clean and nicely decorated for Christmas too. Three beers on hand pulls, so a bit spoiled for choice. An excellent late afternoon session!

As we had a little dog, we were given a table in the library, which was fine or at least it would have been fine had our service been better. Our food was delicious, it really was but we did feel a bi
