This pub is far to small to serve meals. We booked a table for 8 people that was only for 6. The place only has three small rooms and we where sat really close to the bar. Never felt so intimidated there must have been 40 people stud drinking every where. Also parking was a shambles. Will not be rushing back

I have been to the black lion before and enjoyed everything about my visit. This is the first time with the new Landlord Gorden at the wheel. We only came to walk the dog around Back o Brook and have a beer. The beer Proper Job was excellent and saw other guests dining. It looked very nice and the ambience and decor of the pub made us decide to stop and have a meal. I have to say we enjoyed it very much and all in all had a lovely evening. Talked to locals and Gordon himself. Highly recommended.

Upon arrival to the pub on the Friday, we was too early and it was closed, to tell you we was gutted was an understatement, I'm sure the Stag began to cry. However the landlady saw us all in distress and offered to open early to allow us to start the weekend the right way! Thank-you for saving the day! Me and my husband came in here looking for an evening meal. The menu was good and our food was nice. Shame about the rude, sassy, short, blonde bar maid though. She was more interested in chatting up the locals than attending to any other customers. Very unprofessional. When she did eventually talk to us, she wasn't overly friendly and I think she needed some lessons in the manners department. Such a shame because the food was lovely but the atmosphere and service was not good! If you're a lad drinking who shows the barmaid any attention, then you're more likely to get served than if you want to eat!

Can highly recommend this pub for large groups staying at the nearby Hamps Hall and Barn. My group of 42, children and adults had a great lunch here in July. Kath, the landlady, was very helpful via e mail in advance, we pre-ordered and in the end sat at tables outside as the weather was glorious (though could have been accommodated inside). Most of us had three courses which were carried out by two friendly waitresses - the food was delicious and piping hot - thank you very much Kath and team!!

However the kind lady on the phone booked us in. They offer a great deal which is 3 courses for £14.95 on a Sunday which is superb value. I wasn't even more pleasantly surprised to find they allowed you to choose any starter or dessert from the main menu in this deal. The food was superb throughout, quality produce, well cooked and a fast and friendly service. The staff couldn't have been more thorough in checking we had everything we needed. I highly recommend the soup and the cheesy leeks that came with the roast were a real hit.

My husband found this pub on Tripadvisor and we popped in for lunch on our way back from Beaver Hall. The food was delicious and a lovely atmosphere. The one thing that really impressed me was how well they cater for children. We went with our 2 year old. The children’s menu is very reasonable at £4.95 including a drink and an ice cream. The toilets were fantastic for children. As most parents will appreciate it can be a nightmare taking toddlers to public toilets but there was an alternating toilet seat including a small seat for children and a step so they could reach to wash their hands. Thank you for making our lunch so easy! I would definitely recommend.

Lovely warm reception from staff, very friendly and helpful. Food was great and a reasonable price though clearly not homemade. Would recommend the pie and the steak as both were delicious and good size portion sizes. The dessert was a bit of a let down, mass produced frozen dessert you'd normally find at the local curry house but it was still yummy and beautifully presented. We have been staying in a cottage in Waterfall Village on and off for years and have watched the Red Lion go from good to less than average. But the new Landlady is truly fantastic and if ever a pub deserved a shot in the arm that this lady has given it, it is the Red Lion. Very friendly, lovely beer, lovely food at a very good price in a wonderful village setting. We went for Sunday lunch and had the roast dinner. Very good value and there is quite an extensive menu. Me and a group of friends were travelling back towards Wigan from Ilam, Derbyshire when we ventured off the A523 to find the signposted pub. It was early evening (6pm) when we called in so it was understandable quiet. The reception 5 muddy booted walkers received was welcoming. Exceptionally reasonably priced menu with a good choice. Food ordered and we settled down in front of one of the 2 fires. Our food was well cooked and plentiful in portion size. By the time we were leaving, the pub was getting busier and the atmosphere was getting better. There's 3 areas in the pub, one of these was more restaurant than pub so if out more smartly dressed than what we were, 3 tables of 4 are available for the smartly dressed.

On a very wet night in October we arrived to a totally empty pub. The lack of atmosphere was slightly disconcerting, made more difficult by the one item I wanted from the limited menu not being in stock. Starters were simple but okay, I had steak for main and it was over cooked and not worth the price. Chicken dish was quite tasty. The open fire and antique feel were definitely the best part about the night.
