A friendly welcome from the bar person into a traditional style pub atmosphere. Clean and uncluttered but with some interesting features. An extremely inexpensive menu with an 'over-60' lunchtime choice available on Tuesday/Wednesday costing less than a tenner for 2 courses. Amazing. The food was well prepared, cooked and served and presented real value. It wasn't a 'cut-down' version of the normal menu.

Popped in for food based on photos, very disappointed. Had steak and ale pie, the photo showed steak and ale in a dish with the flaky pastry removed and by its side. Reality was steak and gravy on the plate, quite tasty but not much of it. The pastry was like a thin, ships biscuit, hard and tasteless and clearly had not been cooked with the steak! Won’t be back.

We ate here while staying nearby on a short break to the Brecon Beacons. We had a table for 2 inside the pub. There was a good varied menu on offer. Our meals (chicken breast in mushroom sauce and steak and ale pie) were both amazing. All food and drinks were served at the table and the friendly staff were all wearing masks. The pub have closed the car park to create more outdoor seating and we had to park further into the village and walk back but it was a dry evening so this didnt bother us. I would highly recommend this pub.

I own a cafe bar/ restaurant nearby, I finished work and decided to go to the Red Lion for dinner. I ordered a fillet steak, and was absolutely amazed at the quality. Full of flavour but cooked perfectly. Service was amazing, even though the pub was extremely busy. Keep up the good work “Red Lion”. Fabulous , yes “fabulous”.

A few of our party wasn't sure about eating here, it looks a lovely old pub from the outside but is a bit sterile and modern when you get inside. No local beers either, but I persuaded them to give it a try as the food looked really good. We ordered and when the food came it was up to expectations, large portions of good pub food at a reasonable price. I would recommend the gammon to anyone. Staff were friendly and chatty, and so were some of the locals we spoke to. Well worth a visit.

Hey was recommended by a friend who always stays there. We had a great time. The food was lovely they catered for my fussy needs where others we have stayed just say 'thats what it is!' Thank you so much to Sarah, Adrian and staff for the welcome they gave us and the help in finding our way around the area. We already have booked for next year. Carole & Steve xx

We chose the Red Lion for dinner on the first day of our holiday. 3 of us chose the chicken curry. After a few mouthfuls, my husband found glass in his meal. We informed a member of staff who said they'd get him another and said it was probably from the jug they'd used to heat it up! But no apology, no complimentary drink or offer of a refund. My husband spoke again to the same member of staff who said " there was nothing they could do" and turned her back on him!!! Disgraceful service and attitude, will not be returning and absolutely don't recommend!

Lived in s-e Wales for 30 years and just found this excellent country pub. Driving around on a bit of a scenic tour with visitors from Hampshire and spotted the sign from the main road through Llangynidr. We chose from the menu and specials board and all was very good with exception of the pastry lid on the Chicken Pie which although probably was supposed to be "puffed" was more like cardboard. Rest of the dish was fine as were our other choices. Desserts were excellent especially the sticky toffee pud! Will definitely include this in our list of "goto" diners for the future.

Attended at the Red Lion last night with my wife for food. It is a lovely pub in a great location. This is the fourth and possibly last visit. Their only concern last night was they had a band in the bar area. One of the specials, the homemade chicken curry was sold out even though we were sat for food at 6pm and only 2 others at that time having food. When our food came, it was pretty obvious what had happened. The waitress struggled to carry our plates as they were so hot. The Lasagne has been kept hot far to long so it became dried and not very nice. My wife”s Chicken Llangynidyr had the same treatment and had a film over the top. As my wife paid she mentioned it to one of the ladies behind the bar. She was taken aback and said she was really surprised. We did not expect any financial recompense but her attitude was very dismissive.

Goed eten in een sfeervolle pub. Wij hadden allebei een Curry, die heerlijk smaakte. Ze hebben er ook verschillende soorten bier op tap.

Pre booked a table even though it was only the two of us, as other reviews suggested. Shown to our table in the restaurant part. Ordered at the bar and tab kept open in case of ordering dessert and more drinks. Didn’t have to wait long. Plates lovely and hot and I had the roast beef and my mum the chicken breast. Roast pots, parsnip and my Yorkie pud already on the plate. Sauce boats of matching gravies were delicious. Also shared veggies of carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and swede and cheesy leeks. The meat was sublime and very enjoyable and substantial meals enjoyed. I can highly recommend.

I did notice in the reviews that there was two 'terrible ' reviews. For the life of me I can't think why. The staff are really friendly and the service is excellent. It's a dog friendly pub also. When we asked for a bowl of water for the dog it was delivered to the table with a couple of snackysmores for the dog as well. It's a great location in a fabulous setting. It's also not far from the canal as well which is well handy as we're on a narrow boat holiday. I would recommend it to anyone.

Many, many years ago this used to have an excellent reputation. We returned to see if it still had it. No. It doesn't. The interior was scruffy, the food was barely edible and we waited an hour for it. Wouldn't have minded the wait if the food had been worth it, but my mother, daughter and myself did not finish our meal. We actually left and went somewhere else for dessert and coffee.

A friendly welcome is guaranteed at this traditional Welsh pub. The beer is good, the service is excellent and the atmosphere is just what you need after a day's walking. You need to book a meal in advance as Marion cooks to order. But it's worth it! Her salad plate was exceptional and her summer fruit cheesecake was irresistible.

Came across The Red Lion by chance whilst taking a friend out for a birthday trip. The young lady behind the bar( part owner I believe) couldn't have been more welcoming. Greeted us as if we'd been before. Nothing was to much trouble and even adjusted items on the menu to our choice. Food was excellent and cannot recommend the Red Lion enough. Will definitely visit again.

4 of us visited the Red lion on 3 consecutive nights (that probably tells you all you need to know), the pub was always busy with locals and visitors alike, the staff and locals were friendly, happy to have a chat. The service was excellent, as were the real ales and the pub food, both of which were very reasonably priced. It's a traditional pub, that's also dog friendly

Our group of four, with our well behaved terrier visited on a quite Tuesday evening. Having read previous reviews & noting that dogs were welcome, it looked a reasonable bet for supper. However we were met with a No Dogs notice at the door, which was confirmed by the barmaid in the empty bar. Needless to say, we did not stay but moved on to the nearby Dragons Head , here we were all made welcome & had a good dinner.

My son and I, (plus his dog), stayed overnight whilst on a two day walk in the Brecon Beacons. The room was very good - nicely modernised with good shower. The breakfast was really good. All for £50 for the two of us - excellent value! Definitely dog friendly. The landlady was very welcoming and supplied us a packed lunch for a very reasonable price. The different real ales on tap were really good and we joined in the local BBQ at the pub for our evening meal. All round a wonderful place to stay in a lovely village.Rob Thomas - Brecon

We ate in the Red Lion whilst on holiday recently with several of our friends. The experience was somewhat variable, with two of our party having the Beef Sizzler, which was grossly overcooked with little in the way of vegetable, whilst others had Fish and chips which was excellent. Mixed bag really.

Over the past two years we have been to the Red Lion in Llangynidr on numerous occasions especially for Sunday lunch but also other lunch times and for dinner. Although the ales were lovely, and some of the bar staff and regulars were welcoming, the landlady wouldn't let us be there without a constant drink in everyone's hands, even pestering us every five minutes whilst we were drinking, asking if we will buy another, before throwing us out. We weren't rowdy, we were buying drinks and we were getting on with the regulars. On a quiet Sunday afternoon in a mostly empty pub this was bizzare, and we were forced to leave.sqFind another village, another pub, don't give this bizzare place your custom, they don't seem to want it anyway.

We stayed here a few months back and found the place to be excellent again! Last time the breakfast service was poor due to a member of staff, this time the complete opposite ! The pub is amazing and has a nice atmosphere, the restaurant is lovely and the food excellent ! The staff are all really eager to please, the breakfast as I mentioned was excellent with great service ! Room 12 is a challenge for a 6’2 person but comfortable ! The bath should be replaced with a shower cubicle really but can’t fault the place overall and will always come back even if in room 12 :-)

We visited whilst on our way down to Builth Wells. A family of 8. Food was fabulous very tasty. Staff extremely friendly and worked very fast to serve our Sunday lunch. We stayed here for bed and breakfast while enjoying walking in the National Park. Rooms are spacious and clean, if nt a little dated. Friendly service from staff and a fabulous breakfast. A nice chilled atmosphere to the hotel. All reasonably priced, and we look forward to returning again.

We stopped here for a few drinks and sat in the pub which was lovely. Plenty of seats and warm cosy rooms. Also had a lovely fuss of Bailey the local dog :) The landlord was very friendly and very kind to give me a birthday drink :) also he gave us some beer and cider recommendations. Reasonable prices and a spotlessly clean pub and toilets. Especially the day after New Year’s Day!! Lots of bar snacks and the landlord told us they have a pizza oven which sounds lovely so shall we come back to have one. Very good atmosphere!!!! We are staying at a local lodge and have came in here a few times. Recommend if you're in the area.
