My family made our second visit to the recently reopened Red Lion on Sunday 12 November 2023 for a pre booked late Sunday afternoon ' lunch' . We have always been a fan of Sharon's cooking and have been looking forward to trying it again at her new venue. The Sunday Lunch was superb and we are really pleased that Sharon is continuing to make her own Soups as one of the starters on offer . The main courses were a delight with tasty fresh food cooked to perfection. The Sunday lunches are very popular , luckily they have a large car park and a good sized dining room . The interior has mainly flat floors with a single low step into the dining room from the bar . Sharon's husband Ade is continuing to supply a variety of well kept real ales and we really liked the Noble Craft Noble Scruffy John that they had onas one of 5 real ales. You can use the Real Ale Finder App to find out what beers Ade has got on . It was a bit of a shock when we first saw Ade after several months as he is now 'sporting' a luxuriant beard hiding 'his good looks' There are plenty of staff employed to help the customers with the friendly and knowledgeable service . We would all recommend The Red Lion for Sunday Lunch and we are looking forward trying a lunchtime time on another day with recently extended opening and meal times

Had a wonderful afternoon at the lion to celebrate my fathers 84th birthday. Excellent home cooked food, most of us had the roast beef and one vegetarian meal. Old school puddings I had the jam sponge and custard which didn’t disappoint. Fantastic service in a warm and friendly traditional pub with some really nice real ales. Will definitely be back soon !

Fabulous! We loved our evening out here. There’s a superb selection of ales on tap and the food is delicious. Home-cooked, piping hot, fresh ingredients and absolutely full of flavour! The pub has been beautifully refurbished and has a real cosy, country feel to it. The service was great too. An absolute gem and we will be back.

This place is awesome! Went recently for a family meal.........Outstanding from start to finish. Food was fantastic from start to finish......Quality, Quantity & value for money, which is in short supply currently. Plus they keep some of the best real ales (served to perfection) across Shropshire, and I have been to a few as a CAMRA member. We will be back.

My partner and I stumbled across this quaint little pub after the morning out at a local NT site, we hadn't made a booking but were on the lookout for a nice Sunday Lunch and this place didn't disappoint! They were busy but it wasn't long until the friendly and helpful staff found us a table and shared the menu and that days specials with us. The food was delicious! ( I had the salmon and my partner had the roast beef) great portion sizes and overall a really nice atmosphere. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone that's in the area.

I will state up front that we haven’t been here and we very much wanted to go. Phone to book a table for a Saturday lunch for three people at 12 o’clock. The lady seemed surprised and said they don’t serve until 1pm. I have never, ever (and we eat our a lot) known a pub not start serving food at 12 noon.

Upon paying our first visit, I had high hopes, set in a lovely country location, I was expecting some good home cooked food with my family, unfortunately this didn't happen. We passed through the bar area and into the restaurant area, realising there was only 1 other family present, this on a Saturday mid afternoon, maybe I should have heard the alarm bells.......however I was still fairly optimistic at this point. The waitress was friendly enough, and took our order, mine being a beef burger, made of locally sourced minced beef, I could almost taste it as soon as I ordered, mmmmm...........BUT..........2 minutes later the waitress informed me that they'd ran out of beef burgers..........fair enough if I had have ordered a rare dish.........but no burgers in stock on a Saturday afternoon, not good. I settled for the ham, egg and chips, which was nice, but hard to go wrong with really. My Wife ordered broccoli and cauliflower bake, which she said was average at best, and for a dessert, ordered a Rolo brownie, which was best described as a cup of chocolatey water.Being a fan of a cream tea, thought I'd give it a bash, expecting a freshly baked scone.........what followed was more like a stale Asda 'smart price' scone, luckily enough I tackled half of it, and just about kept my teeth. All in all, the food lets this place down massively, and when you have got so many other places to dine out in nearby Newport, I can understand why this place is like a ghost town.I would have scored it a one out of 5, had my 6 year old daughter not enjoyed the farmyard/play area. Such a waste.........so much potential, but the quality of food needs addressing quickly if The Red Lion is to survive.

Along with all other tables and one that had a party of 16 out for a childs birthday party, all said they would never come to this pub again. Ive read your bad reviews already. They say all the same things I have experienced... Tiny portions for extortionate prices. The mash potato was full of starch which made it all sticky and unpalatable. No apologies were given to some tables and customers were very upset. On a Saturday we were told the bosses were away and there was only one waitress waiting on.. really??? It is down to the management to get this right, not the waitresses fault. I felt sorry for her. The chefs food was somewhat cold and half-cooked. We waited nearly an hour for our food, and so did other tables. We had been told that you were good, but the place was fairly empty. I can see why..! The waitress did however take 15.00 off the bill, but only when I asked her to. This should have been offered without the need to ask! The empty dishes were not removed for an hour, so we had to place them on the table next to ours. Very unrelaxing experience as we needed to get going by 15.00 hours, and we arrived at13.00.. and the service was so slow and poor. No smiles, just frowns and hand waving and obviously stressed staff. Management you should be ashamed of yourselves to offer such a bad service to customers. Train your staff, your chef should have appeared to apologise for the late and cold food. I felt sorry for the birthday party as it was a special outing for them and they had come all the way from Shrewsbury to attend it. Very poor service.. can see you being open much longer! I guess your success is with you Carvery, lets hope so. Visited: 03/09/16.

My family and I visited this pub for a meal last Saturday. We had a 20% off food voucher which we showed the waitress who confirmed it was fully valid for our meal. We ordered our food at 12.30pm and the starters didn't arrived until 45 minutes later. Our main courses didn't arrive until 1.45pm and our desserts didn't arrive until 2.15pm. We were in the pub for 2 and a half hours and the service was very slow indeed. The food was reasonably good although the portions were on the small side and the ham which came with my main course looked like it had been out of the fridge for a while. When we came to pay the bill the waitress said our voucher wasn't valid despite checking with her beforehand that it was definitely valid and no amount of reasoning would change her mind. If you don't fancy a long wait to be served then a dispute over the bill give this place a miss.

Having been out for the afternoon and not feeling like preparing an evening meal on our return home, decided to give the pub we had seen advertised along the A41 a try. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly young man who took our order for drinks and provided us with the menu. We chose a fillet steak from a reasonable choice menu and can honestly say it was cooked to perfection, not the case on many occasions we have experienced at other locations recently. We were surprised that the restaurant was empty but put this down to the fact that it was Monday evening. Another factor is the location, albeit a delightful area, it is a little way off the beaten track, obviously the reason for the large advertising banners along the main A41. A pity because the pub has a huge potential. If you want a nice meal in pleasant surroundings, with food freshly cooked to order, then please give the The Red Lion at Great Chatwell a try, we are glad we did, and we will certainly make further visits.

I first starting coming to this pub over 16 years ago it was fantastic until the tenants left.its been closed, several managers since we decided to re visit. A friday night 7.30, as we walked in, 2 x other couples followed, good sign i thought? unfortunately it was all downhill from there. ordered drinks and sat down, young lad came over to take order ,wasn't quite ready so asked for him to pop back in 5 mins. 20 mins later still didn't return. we were sitting right opposite the bar where he was stood cleaning glasses. anyway, finally order taken we sat and enjoyed drinks. cutlery bought over, 2 of the 4 of us ordered steak, no steak knives i had to ask for these. offered a bottle of wine free as ordered 2 steaks, only white or rose? no red. food arrived 3 out of the 4 meals... we were told we were still waiting for a pie to come. to be fair a lady came out to apologise and said she would discount meal because of the wait. Never asked if we wanted sauces etc or if anything was ok with meals.Cannot fault the food, cooked lovely and plenty of it. waited and waited for plates to be cleared (again would understand if busy). when cleared eventually, never asked if we wanted desserts or coffee so we didn't bother. went to pay the bill, had to mention the discount and also ask for my bottle of free wine to take home! unfortunately i won't be returning even though its on my doorstep, i think the menu is over priced but would still actually go if the service was spot on, this was a huge let down!

A lovely pub away from the hustle and bustle of major towns. Our previous visits have found the Pub closed, despite lots of signs advertising them so this was going to be our last attempt to try them out.Arriving to a friendly welcome from one of the staff (young lady) all seemed good from the off, but this appears to have been the peak of our visit! The young man at the bar was on his first day and was evidently nervous, and I was surprised he did not have more support around him (too many chiefs and not enough Indians springs to mind). We received our drinks and were passed 2 menus, one was the main menu and the other was a "picnic pledge" which clearly said at the top available Mon-Fri, so this seemed pointless to even look at.My wife decided that she would like to try the vegetarian burger, but as the menu suggested she decided to ask what the contents were within the burger this week. This seemed to throw the staff (at least 3 of them) as they didn't have an answer - know your menu surely? My daughter went for the ham, egg and chips, her only disappoint after receiving it was that she didn't have runny eggs!I ordered the fish and chunky chips. The batter was different to the norm in that it was made with gin and tonic, didn't notice any difference to normal batter to be honest. I wouldn't class them as chunky chips, nothing different to your normal supermarket chips, and tasted the same. Certainly my meal was not worth £13.99, lesson learnt. The veggie burger arrived, corn, peas, carrot fried in a pattie. Nice according to my wife.Disappointing that the staff came to clear the plates whilst my daughter was still eating her food, very evident, so to ask if we had all finished was a bit of an insult. When we had eventually finished no one came to clear the plates for a good 10 minutes. Not asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu, or whether we wanted coffee just rounded off the visit. So in summary, evidently a massive lack of service, some serious training needs to take place here. I fear any large parties that they say they can cater for would suffer. Management need to step up here as the "Chiefs" always seemed to be out back or in the gardens.Food is pleasant enough but nothing special and maybe the price points need to be revisited - a pub not too far away does fish and chips cheaper, with homemade chips and a larger portion for less.A lot of advertising along the A41 which now needs to be backed up with some quality service and food. Loads of potential to make this a great place, but at the minute it isn't there.

I have seen the place heavily advertised in the area so decided to give it a try, what a mistake! We booked a table for 2 for 7.30pm, drove the half hour journey to the pub to find the car park virtually empty, went inside, one other person on laptop near the bar, to a friendly greeting from a young lady behind the bar and shown to a table and given the menu's, all seemed OK if a little quiet, ordered drinks, my wife asked if they had pro secco the young lady said they did not but came back and said she did have 1 small bottle left which my wife ordered.Ordered starters, both were fine, and main course, they advertised red mullet on the menu but she said it was out of season but I could have mackerel instead so I chose that and my wife ordered halibut.4 people came into the pub and sat in the dining area behind us playing some kind of board game, frustration or scrabble, no one else came in and we thought it was a bit to quiet even for a Wednesday night. We ordered another round of drinks and I said to the lady you don't have any more prosecco do you but she said she had, when it came it was totally flat and tasted like vinegar, it was quickly exchanged for a Chardonnay which was fine.An older man who was now behind the bar apologised for the delay saying they had a power cut and had to wait for the gas ovens to cool before they could relight them, seemed strange but never the less who were we to disbelieve. The 2 mains came and I had 1 taste of the mackerel and asked my wife to try it as it had no taste at all, neither did her halibut so we took both plates to the bar and told the man we were not happy with the food, he fetched the young girl from the kitchen, a lady sitting by the bar said Oh my son is the chef here but it is his night off, he hasn't had one for ages and don't let this put you off please come again, the young girl apologised and only charged us for drinks and said we normally offer 10% but I will give you 20% off if you come again. This is such a shame because the pub is in a nice area and recently done out, albeit on a budget and it seems that is trying to be a gastro pub but on a shoestring.Unfortunately we will not be going back in a hurry

We booked this place for lunch as hadn't been there in many years. We arrived and were told sit where you would like to, as the car park wasn't very full this started to worry us. The carvery meat was nice but I was a little baffled how you can have a carvery with only 2 veg being offered and also the server actually puts it on your plate in measured portions. A couple of family members ate from the menu and they confirmed it was OK. The waiting staff looked as though they were new to the job and maybe this place could do with a little experience leading at the helm to tray and show a little leadership. Overall this place could be an absolute gem if only a little more attention to detail was taken. Food overall was OK though!

We have just visited this lovely village pub for a Sunday Carvery for the first time 17.04.16 Along with the Carvey they also have a very reasonable menu to choose from.We had passed signes to the pub on the A41 Easter Sunday on our way to have Lunch at another pub further along towards Newport and decided to visit The Red Lion for our next lunch out.I did check this venue out on Trip Adviser first only to see it had not received any revues since 2014 and then not a very good one. BUT on reading the Landlords reply to the revue we decided to give it a try anyway and were plesently surprised. We did go later in the afternoon at 4 oclock and although there wasn`t many dinning at that time there was a large family gatheriing with 2 children and 2 other couples enjoying a meal and at least 4 more people arrived whilst we were there. The car park was quite full with cars coming and going on a regular basis which I presume from this so was the bar area. There is a lovely large garden which on a lovley day like today looked very inviting. Another advantage I noticed was a room off the dining room with toys etc and a large computer / t.v screen which was set up for children to play games on once they had finished eating which kept them entertained whilst their parents enjoyed their meal. An excellent touch. Our Carvery was good and the service we received from our waitress was also very good. In all I would recomend giving this Pub at least a try and we will be going back with our family and grandchildren again soon. Thank you for a pleasent afternoon.

Stopped off here on way back from a weekend away after hearing it was rennovated and under new management. It has been done up, though some aspects have been done cheaply. Arrived at midday and carpets in some areas still needed a vacuum.Sat for over an hour and didnt see one person go to the carvery, which was a shame as it has promise. I would have had one had the chef managed to keep his trousers around his waist instead of half way down his bum! Put me off!Beer garden is lovely though and a sun trap, and friendly staff. Been done with families in mind with baby changing area and "kids corner" and pick n mix available at the bar. All in all nice enough, quiet and room.for improvement.

Constructive feedback only as the food we had was delicious. Our experience was mixed. Shown to a relaxing settee to wait for our table but after 30 minutes asked to move to our table due to disturbing noise from what seemed a table of locals. They didn't help the atmosphere they were trying to create. Had great steak. Ordered cheesecake but after 30 minutes they returned saying they had none. They also had no non alcoholic beer or raspberry j20s as advertised in the menu. We were lucky to have eaten as quickly as we did as a couple next to us waited 90 minutes or more for their mains. Nice place and good effort but there are issues.

Went to The Red Lion on 30th January with friends as we all had happy memories of dining there on many occasions previously. We arrived at 7.35pm and not having booked we were uncertain we would get in as the car park looked a bit busy. The manageress Lisa however said it would be fine told us to take a seat and took our drinks order and gave us menus. We ordered by 7.45pm and sat with our drinks enjoying the live music in the next room, which we were told was on because it was a relaunch night for the establishment. Unfortunately that was to be the last good experience of the night. By 9.00pm after having finished our drinks some time ago and neither food or anyone offering more drinks service appearing, we went to ask what was going on with our meals. A few minutes later a polite young lady came and told us that they had been busy with a large party that night, and that they were starting on our meals right now and they would be with us in 10 to 15 minutes. We were offered some complimentary bread and oils whilst we waited which duly arrived a few minutes later. Still no offer to take any more drinks orders.By 9.30 with nothing appearing we started to put our coats on and leave at which point we were told that our meals were being plated up right that second and were on the way. We sat down again, despite being past the point of being hungry, and waited. After a further 10 minutes with no food we got up to leave and told the staff behind the bar we could wait no longer. We were told that the food was coming out the door that second but it was our choice if we wanted to leave or not. As we saw food coming out the door we went and sat down once again. Our meals arrived. we had ordered 2 Steak and Cheese Burgers, The Pie of the day with chunky chips and the Black Country Pork with hand cut rustic chips. The Burgers had soggy Bread Buns on Top. The Pie arrived with Mash, and the Pork came with the same chunky chips as the Burgers. The Chips were White, still hard and obviously not cooked. We were told that because of the wait and that it was the relaunch night we could have either complimentary dessert or drinks or a bottle of wine to take home and 25% off the bill. To be honest we got offered so many things I'm not sure what we we would have got. They offered to cook extra chips for my partners Pie which was just meat wrapped in a pastry lattice again still white and not cooked. After taking a bite of the uncooked chips, seeing the soggy Burger Buns and undercooked pastry on the Pie we decided enough was enough and got up to leave. As we were on our way out another Diner was speaking to the same young lady we had spoken to saying that in 2 and a half hours all they had in their party was a starter each. The manageress Lisa whilst we could see her front of house on many occasions was quite happy to let her staff take the brunt of all the criticism and did not once come to apologise or explain herself what the situation was.I have the utmost respect for staff in the Hospitality Industry who work extremely hard and for long hours with not the greatest financial reward, but this was just embarrassing and so unprofessional. I notice from previous reviews that the establishment was taken over in December 2014, which was when Lisa said she had taken over. What happened last night then I have no idea as you would think that given the night it was they would have tried even harder than normal. Such a shame to see a lovely establishment being so poorly run and a serious investigation is needed along with some staff training and motivation I think.

I was surprised by the range because I anticipated 'pub grub'. Oh No. This is a pub with a Chef who knows his stuf.. Had a lovely tasty meal cooked by Chef, must admit it was a burger, but delicious tasty and accompanied. I believe there is a relaunch coming but if they keep producing well priced, well cooked and well presented food I will return and spread the word. We planned to eat in the restaurant on 22nd October 2015 after a recommendation from a friend. We arrived around 7.50pm - there were 2 people eating but apart from that the restaurant was empty. We ordered drinks which were brought to us by the barman along with the menus.A very large choice at very expensive prices - for a pub. Beef Wellington @ £24, Seabass with Vegetables @ £15, Vegetarian options @ £10, etc.The order was taken by a young lady - Seabass, new potatoes and vegetables for me, Pork Stroganoff with a side order of chips for my partner. He was asked if he wanted to "upgrade from frozen chips to homemade" - astounded wasn't the word!!! At these prices, homemade chips should be the norm.40 minutes later the food was brought out - wrong!Sea bass with almost black chips and Stroganoff with Rice and Naan Bread. We queried the meal with the barman who said he though he had brought out a curry and fish and chips, but wasn't sure - he didn't usually work in restaurant. The food went back and came out a few minutes later - exactly the same. I queried where my potatoes and vegetables were - I had ordered exactly as the menu. The food went back again. The young lady queried if we had ordered chips with the fish or stroganoff. We reconfirmed the order and asked if the "home cooked chips" could be resupplied - not burnt. We were told they had to be like that or they would be raw.We were advised that they could redo the chips - it would take about 15 minutes. Assumedly, the rest of the meal would sit on the hotplate for that time, slowly congealing - not ideal for fish that had already been plated for a good 10 minutes. As it was now nearly 9pm, we decided to cut our loses and leave without having eaten. Points to remember here :-1) No-one else arrived to eat whilst we were there and the couple left shortly after we arrived - so 2 customers for 2 "waiting on staff" and the chef to cater for and they couldn't get it right between them!2) 2 meals is not hard to remember - or right down correctly!3) It clearly states on the menu what eat dish is served with - the only addition was a side order of chips. Can the staff and chef not read - or have the sense to double check what they are serving.I have worked in the food service industry for over 15 years and don't leave negative feedback lightly. This was truly appalling.Buck your ideas up and train your staff properly!!!!

Decided to give this pub a try after seeing quite a few roadside signs. We have not been here for a few years when it was a very busy pub and booking a meal was essential.Called in on Thursday 22nd October around 12.30pm.Ihad a pint of lager and my wife a tonic water. The tonic water glass had lipstick on it and although my wife waited patiently to get it changed no one seemed to care even though there were two men talking behind the bar.We were shown to our table and when I took a sip of my lager a long black hair came off the rim on to my lips (not mine I'm bald)Not a good start. On the plus side the meals we had were nicely cooked and hot and reasonable value for money. After the meal we returned to lounge to finish our drinks and we noticed quite a few stains on the coffee table we were sat by.This pub is quite a way from the main road so to be competitive I think they are going to have to raise their game.Would we go again?Er no.

The service is not that quick but it enables you to enjoy a drink while you wait. The beer is banks . Everything seems pretty laid back but I think the staff and everyone there are trying to encourage new customers .

Only found this pub because we saw a small sign on the A41 and decided to investigate, I am glad we did. The pub is in a picturesque little village/hamlet, it is out of the way and if the owners want to increase business I suggest bigger signs, I live in Wrexham about 50 mins drive away and didn't know this place existed. The pub was quiet when we arrived but it was 15:30hrs, so the main dinner trade had probably left, but it didn't diminish the quality of the food, we had the carvery and it was very tasty and plentiful in fact even though the time was getting on a fresh piece of gammon was coming out to be carved. The staff were all pleasant and friendly and to be honest I have only just read some of the previous comments and I am wandering if I am in the same place as I didn't experience any of the negative comments which have been reported. Overall if I am back in this area I would definitely come back

One of those reviews where if the staff were reading this they would feel the review was harsh, but I think this is the problem in itself that they can not see the issues that others see.We used to visit quite regularly before it closed but had not ventured back in recent times until now. When we arrived there were 4-5 tables in the dining room and no other drinkers. We asked for a table and were invited to wait in a comfy area with mini settees, no problem so I headed to the bar but were told they would take our drinks order where we were sitting - no issues there. But after ordering the drinks took 15 mins to arrive, bearing in mind the bar was empty. In the meantime we were handed a menu, again fine, but then we waited and waited and waited. Again, if the pub was full then fine, but only 4 or 5 other tables were being used. It took 30-35 mins for our order to be taken. Ok, so now at least we would be shown to our table, afraid not. We were told (albeit) politely that we will be shown to our table once the starters were ready. The food itself was moderate to below average, bordering on poor price wise. The starters were ok, not much to say either way to be honest. Mains though were pretty poor, the fish pie was edible but would not say it was delicious and one of the carrots was bone dry. However, to balance that the gammon got a positive result, the other two dishes ordered were average. Serving of the mains was poor again, by this stage there were only 3 tables in use, one person brought out 2 of the dishes followed by a second person who didnt know which table it was for. For what ever reason she asked the other two tables, before deciding to make a retreat back to the kitchen. We are far from fussy and generally take the food as it comes, but the pricing isnt particularly keen, food average to poor and service very poor. I cant see us returning unfortunately which is a shame as the setting of the pub is superb.

Fathers Day 2015. I persuaded hubby that he didn't really want me to cook like every other Sunday and that we should go out. Since the Southwater development opened in Telford I've been wary about the potential impact this could have on smaller restaurants/pubs so suggested we have a drive out and pick a village pub. We came across the Red Lion and were met by a great chap at the front door who had a bit of banter and made us feel welcome. I'd not even stepped through the door to the bar before the manager shouted at us that if we were eating then we needed to use the other outside door to the restaurant. She could have welcomed us in and then direct us to the entrance to the restaurant through the bar but nevertheless our first impressions were now somewhat tarnished. We entered the restaurant and there were 2 waitresses for what I'd describe as a relatively small restaurant. One seemed rushed off her feet, the other in cloud cuckoo land. Unfortunately we bagged the waitress away with the fairies. Very pleasant girl, can't knock her for that, but she just wasn't switched on enough to deal with the components of a Sunday Lunchtime. We were asked to take a seat. A life time later we had our drinks order taken. Then after even more waiting my husband went to the bar to ask what exactly we were waiting for. We were then taken to another table in the restaurant and issued with our Carvery tickets which could have been issued a good 30 minutes sooner. Our 2 year old by this time was getting rather bored and mischief soon creeped into him. The Carvery was nice but not a massive portion. It made me remember why we usually stick to chain restaurants for eating out. They are organised, they have customer service experience and wouldn't dream of leaving new customers without a clue what's going on. All it would have taken was for that waitress to say, have you been before? If not this is how it works, you'll take a seat in this waiting area as you're a walk in, I'll get you some drinks then I'll take you through to the restaurant. Rather than leave us sitting there like a bunch of lemons, watching everyone coming up for their food, wondering what on earth we were waiting for. I have a feeling we'd still be sat at that waiting table now had my husband not said anything. Needless to say we didn't risk waiting on a pudding and got out of there. Such a shame. And we wonder why the pub trade is going under. Good Communication is such an integral part of customer service and unfortunately for us the manager and the waitress we encountered didn't have this.

I feel it necessary to comment on this review dated 27March 2015.I WILL NOT stand back and see a perfectly respectable Inn be so disrespected in this way.I know first hand the owner/staff of this lovely establishment, and there is no way that any of "RickySingh2" comments are credible. In the past 9 years there have been vast number of different mangers of this pub and the current one's are in the top 3 of best of the the bunch. All of the staff are such polite, respectable and in no way RACIST people. They will do whatever it takes to make your experience there enjoyable, whether you are dining or just having a social drink. The food is cooked to order, the chefs cater to your individual needs not like a lot of restaurants that just serve you ASP to rotate the tables. This is now a wonderful country pub that has had a lot of money spent on it by the current managers. In no way should you associate this as just another MARSTONS Inn, this is a BLACKSLATE run establishment and all credit for how they have given this pub a new lease of life should go to them. This review is purely neutral, in the past we also had bad reviews for this pub but we have started going again for the past 5 months, and are really pleased we gave it another go, and it's all down to the wonderful new staff and really good food.We hope this review helps you to give places such a this a second chance. It is entirely up to you whether you give it a go but please do not be influenced by reviews that in my opinion (by the amount of counter reviews from guests on the same night !) amount to libel action. I believe they have got of lightly, just 1 bad review can ruin a country pub. I am really pleased that the managers gave a reply and that they stand by the drinking regulations. The abuse to this pub that has been given by " RickySingh2" is utter poppycock !

Booked for a large party and ended up going elsewhere. After being seated and waiting 20 minutes for drinks, we were told there was a 45 minute wait for food. Left before seeing if this was accurate as it seemed to be very slow service to other tables too. Very poor menu. Expensive and little selection, only one vegatarian option. Unless you turn the page on the menu where you see excellent looking menu's for Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. Except we didn't go on those days, and we don't want to see that everything on the menu is cheaper on a Sunday.A couple of suggestions.1 - £3.55 for a pint of cider. £4.25 for a glass of wine?!2 - It's fine having different menus for different days, but don't put them all in the same booklet. Especially when we can see that if we came the following the day the menu was much larger and £2 cheaper.3 - A 45 minute wait for food on a quiet evening when we had pre-booked. And a 20 minute wait to get our drinks before that after being seated..

On 27th March me and my partner had gone for a meal in this restaurant and we were very impressed with our home cooked meal, I came on here to write a very nice review and then noticed the recent review also dated from the same night regarding a family calling this pub "racist". We were actually in the restaurant whilst the management were talking to this family and saw the whole ordeal and felt it necessary to tell the truth that has conveniently been left out of their review. We were horrified and shocked at the way this family spoke to the staff and were very impressed at the way the staff dealt with the situation professionally, from where we were sat in the restaurant we saw the management explaining about refusing service of alcohol to people who couldn't show valid ID. From this we understood that the young boy of the family had been refused alcohol, the family then started to swear at the management so understandably they were asked to leave, there was no threats given so I'm shocked to read how this family has exaggerated the situation so badly. It is also important to note that the "long term friends" of theirs were stood next to the manager at the time of this confrontation and were actually shocked and embarrassed at the behaviour of this family. All of this aside, our night was nearly ruined by this family and due to the brilliant service of the staff who kindly apologised and made sure the rest of our evening was lovely and the very nice meal we had, it is most certain this pub is one to recommend and should not have their name tarnished by people like this.Thankyou red lion staff, we will be returning with friends!

It was very busy which is great for a lovely country pub and the atmosphere was brilliant up until a family insulted the regular customers (my friends) and the staff who I have grown to know well. A young member of this family looked under 25 and so got asked for id to which this family verbally abused the staff. The mother (assuming) squared up to a staff member! I witnessed this while drinking with a friend and this family got asked to leave when the young lad swore at the owner! Tbh I would of asked you to leave before that so count yourself lucky! I also work behind a bar and we also need to have a drink (of pop) otherwise we wont be able to serve!!! The staff in this pub are NOT racist. I have bought my coloured friends in here and they were treated the same as everyone else!! Get off your high horse and respect the bar staff that have to serve you all night!

Visited the The Red Lion for a close family friends 50th birthday party in the private room. After having to wait a life time to get served, while the bar 'lady' was knocking her 2ltr bottle of pepsi straight to the mouth, even though the pub was deserted. After constantly being harassed by ill manored inexperienced staff and spoken to rudely. We were asked to leave the premises due to the only reason I can see is the colour of our skin. We were the only 'coloured' people with the party and found this very embarrassing and humiliating. Me and my family are quiet and well manored people. We have a wide circle of friends and visit a lot of pubs and have never been treated the way we were this evening. The manager/ proclaimed owner of the pub didn't ask us to leave, he threatened us and forced us to leave. The pub may be trying to stay vintage but it was filthy the glasses were covered in water marks and the wine was warm. I would not recommend this pub to anybody and especially not if you are in any way 'coloured'. We are a well educated and respected family but this pub will not move forward until they educate themselves and they're staff.

It allowed me 2 meals for the price of one so the meal was reasonable) The chef prepares & cooks each meal individually & the steaks were cooked to our liking. Mine was medium & my husband's medium rare. They were both cooked to perfection. The meal was well presented. I had chosen a baked potato instead of chips & it was cooked to my liking. The meal was well arranged on the plate & included half a tomato & a large flat mushroom with garlic butter. We bothreally enjoyed our meals & will be returning & telling our friends & neighbours.Thank you Red Lion

I thoroughly enjoyed my food as it was freshly cooked and not microwaveable rubbish. The staff were very friendly and made myself and my party feel welcome. Would highly recommend!!
