We booked for steak night . We where a bit apprehensive. As never ate here . Our meal came & all I can say it looked amazing. Much better than high end restaurants

Nice staff food was OK no atmosphere very small menu probably would not go again although Sunday lunches are supposed to be nice the menu on Google is out of date

Fish and chips were perfect and the lasagna was also really good we will be coming back in the future. Well worth a look and lovely outside sitting area as well as dog friendly

This family run pub is very well run from ordering drinks to offering you a menu they make you feel very welcome.This is are 3rd visit and will definitely be back again even if it is a 40 mile round trip .The food is first class would recommend the mince and dumplings .l had the chicken Parma today first class meal

Ordered a takeaway Sunday dinner and I wasn’t disappointed, it was absolutely delicious, one of the best I’ve had and will definitely be going back 😁

Three of us ventured in on a night which had a ' Steak night ' offer on. You can have 2 steaks and a bottle of wine for £35 which is superb value. The fact that when you taste the steaks and the quality of their cooking, you realise it is better than good value, it is actually fantastic. You'd pay £35 for 1 steak in Newcastle alone for example. So 2 of us had the steak offer, and the other had a cod and chunky chips choice, all so tasty and well presented. The steaks were huge rumps, with fresh onion rings atop, very lightly made, a bit different to the small heavy ones you usually get anywhere else. All in all 3 great choices and brought to us by friendly waiting staff. A nice dining area at the back of the pub looks out over the beer garden and woods to the back of that, just great. Try it as I am sure you will love it in here.

Just had a great lunch at The Red Kite. One of the nicest roast beef sandwiches I've had for a long time. Really tasty gravy (and lots of it!) to dip your sandwich and potato skins in. Would thoroughly recommend!

An amazing place and Ghost and Etta both enjoyed their doggy ice creams!!

Very dog friendly place which is lovely to visit whilst walking around the derwent! They have a canny little garden you can sit in with the dogs. Only negative was the sheer amount of cigarettes left all on the ground from trampy customers- it just let it down as it made it feel dirty. It wouldn't stop me visiting again as we find a nice cold drink is a lovely half way point whilst out walking.

Huge portions, good value and very tasty food.

The staff were amazing when I got lost at an event, really helped me, speaking to my friend and making sure I got back to the event HQ.

Saturday evening 7.15 we arrived at The Red Kite, large board outside saying ‘ delicious new menu served 12 noon to 8.45. Male behind bar said no food only drinks. We asked why….. oh because we’ve been too busy. Never again. Disgraceful. Go somewhere else.

I was looking forward to a pint on a hot day. Stood at the bar for nearly 10 minutes with no sign of any staff Eventually, somebody within sight of me watching the football ambled over and served me, then off to the tv again Then female bar staff ambled around and disappeared again Couple came in and were left standing at the bar. I didn’t get my real ale as there wasn’t any! But I did have the experience of sitting next to a table with chips, paper and indescribable slop on the floor. And there was me thinking the Red Kite had risen from the ashes Some chance !

After being informed the Red Kite do fantastic Sunday dinners, my wife and tried it today. We were not disappointed, a very tasty dinner and lots of it. I think we have found our new go to for Sunday dinners!

Superb service, so polite and extremely helpful .I have food intolerance, so I called ,the day before and asked for a baked potato with prawn and salad. It was soo tasty and loads of massive prawns. My friends had mince and dumplings also scampi. Both meals were huge and superb. Can't praise this place enough, a rare find !!!!!!

Lovely food and really large portions. The barman was very pleasant. Was a Wednesday lunchtime so very quiet but will definitely go back.

Decided to call in this afternoon and try the food, I had the Gammon and the missus had the Parmo both meals were delicious and we couldn't fault either of them also the young lad serving was very polite and helpful, We will be going back again and we will be telling our friends to give it a try .

Waited half hour for starter of soup n it was curdled. Then the Sunday dinner was an hour wait after that. We wont be returning.

Ate here for the first time in about 5 years Booked a table online but didn’t need to as there was plenty of tables when we arrived. All staff were pleasant & helpful. Good menu & Specials board available. Food was piping hot & chips perfect. Also got 2 doggy ice creams afterwards as we’d left the dogs at home. Will definitely be back here.

The bar meal was excellent, plenty to eat and good quality, better than most bar meals. The view from the restaurant area was over the beer garden to the green 'meadow'

Didn't try the food this week but it looked good and I heard no complaints. Proper disabled toilet. Very clean and Tidy. Friendly helpful staff. Only downside is a lack of disabled parking. Will post again next week after we try the food.

Glad this place reopened. Absolutely lovely pint and such a nice chilled out place to visit. All staff in the few visits I've had have been amazing, but the stand out staff member was the lady who lives in Ryton who also worked there for the previous tenants. Really nice person who really sold the place, and the new owners. She really loved her job and the customers. Me and my partner stayed longer than planned because of her.

Just visited for first time and will definitely return had 3 course meal all of which was fantastic its been a long time since I have had food that nice and price was very much worth every penny

We arrived late so the ace wasn't busy hence 4 for atmosphere. Our fault not theirs . Very enjoyable food , grateful service .

A party of us booked the Christmas lunch and this was superb. The food was well presented, very good quality and plentiful. Staff were pleasant and helpful. An excellent time was had by all.

Popped in for a quick drink and the service was fast and friendly and can't complain with the price of drinks.

My partner and I had the most amazing chicken and mushroom pie with seasonal vegetables and a lovely rich gravy. Traditional suet pie was yummy. For dessert my partner had the homemade sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and ice cream. It was devine! The staff were friendly and attentive. Really enjoying having our lovely local pub back, doing what it does best…..good quality food with friendly helpful staff. Thank you

The Kite has been taken over by new management and is just great! The food is delicious and well presented. Staff are so polite and helpful. The TV and pool table are gone so it won't please everyone but it's a lovely local pub for walkers, dog walkers, diners.

The Red Kite has been taken over, and the new occupants are fantastic. It used to be you waited ages for service but not anymore, very attentive staff, menu, drinks, order, food delivered, dessert, exceptional. Loved the Sunday lunch. Definitely be back again

Called in for a light lunch. Soup 🍲 and a sandwich 🥪 £8.00. Excellent food and great value for money. The staff are all very friendly and welcoming. I will definitely be back again.

Cool pub we stoped at on our derwent walk.The food and customer service was awesome! Nicola the manager was rocking it and ran a tight ship.

Lewis was our waiter for the day who was absolutely delightful We had super the day which was a root vegetable for three of us and a side of potato skins and a homemade pate to die for Definitely will be back definitely recommend and begrudgingly leaving this as it'll probably be a lot busier next time! 🤣🤣

Probably the worst eating out experience we've ever had. Most of the main courses were unavailable. What we did have was overcooked and pretty basic. The "beer garden" was paticularly scruffy.

Went for lunch and got some great sandwiches! Staff were really kind and the atmosphere was chilled. Lots of toys in the corner for kids to play with. The food took a second to come out, but was worth it.

On behalf of all the parents of St Joseph's Highfield I would like to say a massive Thank you for accommodating us on year six leavers. You have gone above and beyond for us and the children and hospitality has been great. service and food fantastic.

Good value food, with varied menu.

Food was amazing, only downfall had to wait 45 minutes for meal wish I'd been told when ordered about the wait.

Ordered hunters chicken to be told no chicken. Reordered two all day breakfast and a burger. The food arrived one hour and five minutes later. I did request three times while waiting, was there a problem only to be told no the food was on its way. I do not work in the pub trade but even I know that pigs in blankets are not served with a full English. If I had been told at the beginning that there was no sausage I and my grandchildren could have chosen something else. Very disappointed.

Came to this lovely friendly pub for Sunday lunch. We weren't disappointed, the food was lovely, the staff were very friendly and the pub has a great atmosphere. It's also dog friendly which is a bonus. There's a great big beer garden at the back, lovely to sit out with a drink in the sun. Will definitely be back.

We'd always wanted to try this pub, and finding ourselves near the Metro Centre, we called in. Despite there being a board outside proclaiming a new menu, when we had bought our drinks we asked for the menu to order lunch. Sorry... No food today. The very busy lass behind the bar was apologetic telling us that the chef was in hospital, and they had nobody to work the kitchen. But then... why put the board out? There were no other staff around, and only 2 other customers, so we drank up and left. We won't be back. We've since found out from friends of ours it has changed hands recently....Who knows, but if you want customers then serve food!

Bad service had to get own cutlery, rice so over done chicken sizzler was burnt , got a refund , but lacking in service waited 40 min should of listened to the table next to us as they said food was bad , wouldn’t come back

Located in the beautiful surroundings of Derwent Valley and River. We made a booking 1 week before we went for lunch at the Red Kite. When we got there, no one had even seen the booking and it was a warm day on a bank holiday Monday, so it was very busy outside. Due to the fact there was already a delay on drop in orders, we did have to wait a considerable length of time to get our food. The food was standard pub grub, so it was ok but quite honestly, from my sister’s previous experience, it didn’t live up to the hype she had created for me. We later discovered they were quite short staffed so it is no reflection on the girl who was trying to serve us and manage the bar. And in fairness, the Manageress did take 25% off our bill for the inconvenience but I can’t say it’s left a memorable experience or the desire to rush back. Perhaps given different circumstances, it could have been a much better experience.

Ok been here tonight for the 1st time with the new owners. Great service, lovely staff and atmosphere. Bought tickets for the charity night at end of July going to be great night. Ps Harper your hair doesn’t need brushing it looks great🤣

Avoid. High prices for basic (and cold) food. A 40 minute wait for burgers even though the place was pretty empty. The burger was burnt and the chips I think were twice fried to heat up and still came out cold. We won't be coming back.

Person who looked after us worked really hard to make sure we all got what we wanted and had a good time. We all had basic stuff but it was delivered well, on a sensible budget.

We booked in for 2:30. Was told to sit down while they prep our table. Waited 30 minutes. We again said to the staff we're still waiting and they just told us to order a drink while we wait. We left because even tho we had booked they were seating people who've just turned up. Shocking service.

Fantastic spot a have a walk.Then in for a drink & pub grub.Theres a new chef so maybe give it time.Not for us.

Stumbled upon this lovely pub after a long walk, very much in need of a drink and food. We ordered the Sunday carvery and honestly couldn’t fault it. Amazing food and the staff were all lovely. Amazing desserts too! Highly recommend.

Dreadful! Despite booking in person and explaining it was for our anniversary, we arrived and found they had run out of food. Couldn't believe it. Very disappointed

Dated and dirty, inexperienced staff, drinks took an age to come as did food which was cold and tasteless, 2 meals we re missing no suggestion of a complimentary drink or pudding to make up fo the extremely poor service. Avoid!!!!

Not from the area but went in for lunch this Friday on the way home ...Food and staff 10/10..but the pub was cold ..Karen in the corner winging not stop about their food .."wrong order "food was cold etc Then the woman who was clearly high as a kite..(yes I do know what that looks like ).screeching ,shouting ,swearing.absoluty bonkers !shame as we would of stayed longer ..nice quiet lunch it wasnt

Had to eat somewhere else. Went after reopening of pub. Waited for our drinks 45 minutes before deciding to leave after talking to other couples, who were waiting still for their starters after eating their mains or left with food but no cutlery… Staff apologised to us. Meal was booked.

Went for Sunday lunch for the first time since it reopened because we used to love the food. We'd booked a table and when we walked in nobody actually acknowledged we were there for five minutes despite standing beside the bar where two people were serving. It was not at all busy compared to recent times we've been in but put that down to it just reopening. A young lass who was absolutely fantastic, the only redeeming part of the whole place, had to come and apologise for there being no beef despite us already ordering two beef dinners. We just ordered a different meat, no worries. She then was made to come again and tell us there was no mashed potato, but said the chef had offered to put more of other things on the plate. Again, fine. Waited a while for the food, and when it eventually came it was just not great all round. The parsnips were rock solid, but plainly like the roasties were from frozen as they had the crispy outside despite being undercooked, and the pork was very dry. We ended up only paying for the drinks and leaving the food. At the same time our dinners came out, two children on the table next to us still hadn't received theirs despite the adults on the table having theirs for a while. Overall the experience was poor. The young lady serving (gingery hair, unfortunately didn't get her name) was fantastic and we told her many times it was absolutely not hers to apologise for and we didn't want her to think she'd had any part in it being an awful visit. So disappointed as the place used to be our go to for a Sunday lunch, but we won't be coming back any time soon after this.

Love, love, love this place! After a walk with the dog, we found this wonderful place to have a bite and a warm, super friendly staff, gorgeous food and after such a welcoming atmosphere, we decided to stay for the live music. After a couple of drinks, they even arranged a dog friendly taxi for us. Beautiful setting, fabulous staff, dog friendly, absolutely spotless, spectacular food, great atmosphere. Will definitely be returning!

Tryed it yesterday since it reopened, should of just popped in for a drink instead. Place looks very dated even though its just reopened, staff very nice but food was very expensive with very small portions. Don't be fooled by the burgers & the tripled cooked chips with there little silver mess trays they come in you would get better value going to the spoons instead, I can say I death won't be eating there again out of the 9 of us only 3 were happy whilst one of us had to wait a extra 15 mins for there chicken burger has they had forgotten about it. Makesure you ask for the onion rings as they won't add them otherwise even though it says on the paper little dirty menus it does, but unfortunately deff not for us again £13 for a cold tastless burger a big N0 N0

Had a tea there a couple weeks ago, food canny. Bit rated them lower as Mother's day this year I booked for dip of us red kite more than happy to take booking along with my contact details But very nicely of them, not. They forgot to mention they woukd not be open for Mother's day 🤨, bit of a micky take

WoW the service.... when you can drag the waitresses away from their phones the service was still very very poor. Fair to say I'll not be returning the Red Kite has drastically gone down hill.

We hadn't been to the Red Kite for quite a long time but we are so glad that we choose this venue for a family celebration. The waiting staff were brilliant and the food was quite exceptional. There was not one thing I could fault. The orders were taken and all of the food was delivered at the same time and hot and all freshly cooked to perfection. I can't wait to go back again and sample more from their fantastic menu. Highly recommended.

High quality food menu Dog friendly inside and outside Extended beer garden

Very pleasantly suprised to be honest. The service was top notch, the Sunday lunch itself, a great choice of meats home made yorkies which is always nice, gravy was in abundance, it came with great selection of veg all perfectly cooked as well, more sides available for the heartier eater, we opted for some cabbage and panchetta..as for puddings, not that big a choice, but still nice. Go visit, you won't be disappointed.
