The Red Cow in Derby

Lovely pub, great atmosphere - a nice quiet restaurant side and a more lively bar side. Good beer garden. Dog friendly (but not allowed in the restaurant so still friendly to people who don't want dogs running around). Excellent sunday roast and regular menu is delicious too. Really recommend, especially if you're local but even if you're not - its only a few minutes walk from the sixes and allestree bus stops.

Went for sunday lunch and it was incredible great food great service

The Tapas menu was to die for, I particularly recommend the steak in mushroom sauce with red wine jus. The staff are always delightful and accommodating. A must for anyone seeking good food and a nice drink with easy and friendly staff. Top notch bar and restaurant.

A Wednesday evening visit to the Red Cow for an evening meal was a real joy. The menu was adventurous, varied and reasonably priced. The service was prompt and polite and the dining area immaculate. The food was extraordinary so the Red Cow is a real gem in lovely setting.

My husband and I were visiting our daughter in Allestree from South Yorkshire.We decided to visit the Red Cow for lunch as we’d been several times before.. I decided on the light lunch and ordered fish and chips.Well what a disappointment. When the meal arrived we all stared at the fish( if you could call it that) it was a small crozzled piece of curled up batter. If I’d have scraped the white meat from the batter think there would have just about managed a teaspoon. For £8.95 I would have expected better,You’ve let yourselves down Red Cow. Wish I’d taken a pic to prove just how small it was

Had never been before, went for sunday lunch, there was a table of 10 and 3 dogs and all of the food came out on time, delicious and good value for money, service was great and accommodated us well.

Booked as at an event close by, went for Sunday lunch, service amazing, lunch fabulous, lots of veg cooked beautifully and lots of rich gravy! Very reasonably priced, Loved it, only 1 Criticism was that my beef was a little tough, the others had pork which was wonderful! Empty plates all round, Will Definitely go back! Thank you

Lovely family meal ahead of my husband’s 65th birthday. Plenty of choice on the Sunday lunch menu, specials board & dessert board & all at a reasonable price. Great service from the staff & good quality food from the chefs. We’ll definitely come again!

Couples Sunday dinner, had the sharing platter. Meat choices were beef and pork and unfortunately the beef was extremely tough. Other accompaniments to the roast were nice, including mash, potatoes, yorkie, veg, etc. cauli cheese was nice but cauliflower definitely served al dente. Not sure I would rush back for a Sunday dinner but may try for normal menu.

Dirty glassware would be nice otherwise

The meal was lovley, party of 9 sat and served within 30 min, all food was delicious, home made and made with pride from the kitchen staff, All staff were extremely welcoming, polite and happy, 10/10 place love it there, allways got me going back for more 😃

Fantastic get-together for seven corgis for their first birthday. From Durham, Basingstoke, South Wales - Derby was the perfect central location. Diane and her team couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. Food was wonderful and we all had a great time. Going to be an annual event.

Visited the Red Cow after a friend's funeral. The staff were helpful and thoughtful and the buffet was excellent.

Popped in for a drink and a bite to eat last night, Fancied the loaded nachos with chilli con carne on top with a side of crispy pork belly bites and bbq dip, it was delicous and even though a bar snack I couldnt finish it.

Just eaten a selection from the Tapas menu and one of our party had a regular main course. Absolutely superb food, well presented and matches all the good tapas places in Prestbury/Manchester, where I'm from. Conscientious staff and a nice setting. By far the best pub food in Allestree and easily rival's the local gastro pubs in the area. Great to see the pub back at the top again.

Food was lovely, proper homemade food and service was excellent. The waitress was lovely and very attentive.

It was not a great start when I read a notice on the door that the Tapas Menu was not available. I should have checked online first .I'm guessing that during a busy period a reduced Menu is common. I had the Home Made Steak Pie that was on the menu - hardly any meat inside my pie the pastry part was not to my liking either. Not a patch on a bought in Owen Taylor Pie that other pubs sell. It's not the first place where I have encountered a drop in standard during the Christamas period.

First visit to the Red Cow for food. Cosy pub great menu plenty of choice. Our party of 4 chose Fish Pie, Liver and Bacon and Steak pie x 2. Fish pie was a very large portion in a dish with mash and veg. The pies had light pastry filled to the brim with chunks of steak, chunky chips and vegetables. Liver was soft perfectly cooked with mash and peas. The gravy was to die for! Desserts were chocolate brownie and strawberry cheesecake all with ice cream. Great value and very tasty. Only downside was our waitress who seemed to be on speed pills. Everything was done at 100mph ! She slammed the drinks down on the table so hard she slopped the beers all over the table no apology. Same with our meals they were slammed down also,she seemed in such a hurry yet we were the only ones eating so not rushed at all. The older waitress was great and made us very welcome we will be back definitely.

Rather disappointed. I had sea bass which was ok. One friend had the pasta but couldn't eat it as smothered in tomsto and very salty. Three others had fish and chips, said chips very greasy. My flat white coffee was cold, very strong with cold milk in a jug, not as advertised.

Very tuff beef, undercook gamon,food swimming in gravy.

The staff here are lovely , we came here today 19/11 For Sunday lunch , not eaten here for about 12 years and thought we'd give one of our locals a go. The place was buzzing and very welcoming. However the food wasn't great far too salty and the meat was tough and swimming in gravy the cauliflower and cheese wasnt cheesy just milky and the brownie was burnt. We left most if the food sadly.

Some food was excellent others not so good, small fish and chips had hardly any fish in hard batter.

An excellent place for homemade food and a cosy atmosphere with excellent staff. To top it off they cater so well for allergies and intolerances. My mum is coeliac and she was so excited to have GF fish and chips, onion rings and cheesecake. The GF pizza was good too, although not as amazing as my daughter's homemade pizza. We will definitely be coming again.

We enjoyed a superb family meal, choosing off the specials hits the sumptuous steak and ale pudding, chips, mushy peas and gravy (x2) and a 2 children’s meals off their children’s menu with ample choice to suit the children. Service was on point and the atmosphere was perfect to enjoy our dining experience. Can’t wait to go back and would highly recommend for couples / singles and families. Not been here for a while so was impressed with the new Tapas Menu. Lovely smiling staff excellent service food was tasty - the Taps took me back to my days of holidays in Spain. We will visit again soon.

We visit on Friday night, and it was pretty quiet, but the food exceeded our expectations. The Salmon with noodles was cooked to perfection and the Beef Pie was homemade and very good. The lady serving was very attentive and friendly. We will be back....

Visited when attending a gathering after a burial service at nearby St Edmunds Church. A very good spread and a lovely atmosphere despite the occasion. The staff worked hard to provide us with an extremely good time.

The staff were extremely attentive... maybe a little too attentive. The food we had was basic we got some bread olives oil and vinegar and the bread was gross but the garlic bread was nice

Buffet for 35 people nearly £11 per person and all we got was a one plate off sausage rolls 6 plates off sandwich’s which were stale a really small bowl off salad, one tray of Chips and a tray of chicken wing not enough for one each bit of a joke really, when speaking to manger she didn’t seem to care at all and all she kept saying was that she’s never have had a problem with it before, avoid at all cost, no one came to check on us. Spoiled a perfect day

Visited here on way down to Cornwall. Went has had good reviews and is dog friendly. Was worth a visit. Old fashioned pub feel was really nice. Brilliant food even our dog got treated by one of the young ladies and one of the regulars treated her too. I had a delicious burger partner had Sunday dinner beef ummmm.

Some go out because they can't cook, some go out because they can't be bothered to cook. Some can cook well. Non would be disappointed. Truly enjoyed the food. As will you. I would have taken the time to take photos of the food, but looked too nice. You would have done the same.

Usually avoid this local pub because of poor beer and service in the past but going for a impromptu meal with friends from Scotland we were very pleased with the beer, the 4 meals and the excellent waiting on staff. We'll done - will be back.

This is our local which we always choose for our Sunday lunch as we have been to lots of different places and struggle to find a good Sunday lunch until going to the red cow. It’s not expensive and all great quality plus the staff are fab. They are doing an evening event on Tuesday 14th March at 7pm to raise money for macmillan which is fab and we will be going for sure x

Sunday lunch was amazing and value for money. The staff were welcoming and friendly and the good was delicious. We was recommended this place and certainly go again.

Tried calling to book but no one answered so we went anyway. I’m arrival the place was quiet. Only 2 families eating. Was told by a staff member that if we hadn’t pre-booked then they couldn’t serve us. So we left and went elsewhere. Slightly confused by the attitude given the current economic climate but their loss

Very poor food and service. I was part of a group of 35 or so for a pre-booked and pre-ordered meal. We arrived 4.30, the time agreed. The last members of the party were not served until 7oclock! A number of diners including my wife had ordered lamb shank. Hers was red raw inside, she sent it back,and I know several people sent theirs back too. The Red Cow management had received the pre order some 3 weeks before, so there is no excuse for not having enough properly cooked lamb shanks. The meals were awful. My Turkey meal had rock hard roast potatoes and virtually uncooked slivers of carrot and parsnip. Many diners said the same.Even the Christmas pudding was substandard, hard and seemingly microwaved too much. If they couldn't organise themselves for a group then they shouldn't have taken the booking

A pre-booked group of about 40 of us arrived about 4.40pm. We had already chosen, at least a week earlier, our starters/mains/deserts. The service was incredibly slow, they just couldn’t cope. At about 6.40, some of the group still hadn’t had their main course. At least two of the group sent their lamb shank back (undercooked). My Turkey meal was ok.

We were there for a wuiet drink on a Saturday night. It was definitely quiet. A bit of a shame jut the way the pub is configured, isnt ideal in today's world. The beer wss fine andvthe staff eere attentive but not necessarily very friendly.
