Pub of choice. Excellent beer and great environment

Lovely evening at the greyhound. Food was superb.

Came here as we have been many times before, our daughter a member of a party of 11 had an allergy reaction, although this was managed with support from family & friends the dissapointment comes from staff members discussing us as the customers as they & them later in the night when the staff clearly didn't know I was in the bar listening to each & every comment.

Very quiet and poor selection of real ales. Only one beer out of 4 listed available.

Always passed this pub but never visited til a couple of weeks back. Really lovely inside (think they had a small refurb) and they have a big outside area too along with a terrace area full of seating. It’s difficult to find a pub in Derby city centre with a good outside area on a nice day so this is one of the best in my opinion. Great selection of beers and great staff too. Will definitely visit here again!

Lovely pub to sit in, good choice of food and drink. Food service was a bit slow but we were a large group so more likely that's our fault!

Quiet on a Thursday night. Nice service. No gluten free ale on tap and just 1 can in the fridge which my husband had. That was disappointing. But hopefully they will restock. Still like the pub.

A small menu, but filled with delicious options, we really enjoyed our evening out at The Greyhound with a hearty dinner and some delicious drinks! All in a lovely atmosphere with friendly staff.

I have to commend the chap who served us for our food and drinks order at the Greyhound. We had been let down by a different place where we'd been assured ahead of our visit that there would be options on the menu for the vegans amongst and... there weren't, so over a drink we searched for nearby pubs with decent vegan menu options and found this one. I don't know what staff role the guy had but he couldn't have been more helpful and hospitable, going out of his way to make our stay really enjoyable. As a result what had become a bit of a disaster was turned around. There was a considerable variety of menu options for all of us and a nice list of cask ales. I should say the other members of staff were lovely as well. :)

Footballs: euros. The staff really went above and beyond for my friend who is on crutches. At the end it was typically a little rowdy but the bar man came out to make sure my friend got out safely, he also went out of his way to get milk for our hot chocolate. Felt very safe as two lone women in a pub during a match.

Excellent food and service, if you get the opportunity take it The sausage sandwich was amazing to say the least. Doesn't look much from outside but when you step inside you realize the gem hidden inside.

Attended recently for a day-long event which due to another venue cancelling at short notice meant that we instead came to this pub. From the get-go the staff were incredible, helpful, polite, all of them really couldn't do enough for us. They showed genuine interest in the event we were running and went out of their way to keep us comfortable and happy. The food was spectacular and the pricing was reasonable. As pubs go it was average to good, but I really can't overstate how much the time spent there was elevated by the efforts of the staff. You're all absolutely wonderful and we appreciate your efforts a ton! Not sure what that wall art is all about though...

Can you please sort out the gardening arrangements? It's a mess and needs sorting. One pot has got a TREE growing in it!!

Saturday night: pub critically understaffed. Bar closed “back in 20 minutes”! Ran out of at least 2 kinds of beer. Birthday party upstairs had to finish early Pub itself strange layout and badly lit Very poor.

Had a 30th Birthday here in the event room and Terrace. The manager and staff were very helpful and everybody enjoyed the night. Look forward to seeing it when the kitchen is back running and the facilities are updated by the new owners.

Lovely friendly staff, nice environment but really let down by the food. A caesar salad at nearly ten quid should not be 90% plain old lettuce and the triple cooked chips looked like they would have been overcooked after the first cook. Barely edible. The bacon in the club sandwich must have triple cooked too. I'm sure there ate some good options big you would think that those simple choices would have been done well.

Had a really nice couple of hours here today. Had a lovely Sunday roast and nice atmosphere. Warm pub and great background music. The staff were really friendly.

As you can see from the photos the state of the building is rather poor with a lot of cleaning needed especially in the toilet area where there was used toilet paper still floating around and all dirty. The ceiling was full of water infiltration and the smell of damp was present as well. We did not feel welcomed in this place and the table service was good but could not change the overall bad atmosphere. The food could've been better for the money that we spent. Would not recommend.

3 people working behind the bar but it took 10 minutes to serve four of us, we were the only people at the bar…food was atrocious, ordered a burger and fries, I got about 10 fries if I’m being generous and the burger with smoked brisket tastes of literally nothing. Will never come back for food. Interior is nice but the toilets are absolutely disgusting and stink of urine. The disabled toilet looked flooded also

Absolutely fantastic. Had a great conversation with one of the staff members as they cleaned up a glass from us after having too much. Could not recommend it more.

Nice beers, nice food but we tried to order online then 20 mins later it told me it didn't go through so had to order at the bar. Smoking area and roof top, really nice place.

Still an awesome pub, with history and great ales even if it is getting a little dated.

First time we've been for lunch, had the Derbyshire brisket which was delicious. Very dog friendly with good selection of ciders. Will be back 🙂

Lovely pub with helpful and friendly staff. Food is reasonably priced and plenty to choose from the menu. Special offers apply on certain days. We had Sunday lunch and it was absolutely delicious. Plenty of seating and can book in advance. Also have an app where you can collect loyalty stamps. Dog friendly too.

Food was nice, hand breadcrumbed chicken. There were no desserts on the menu and the place was generally pretty grimy.

I booked a table traveled 50 minutes just to arrive there and get told that there was no chef so they werent serving food , plus no notice online about having no chef or no call. i recommend going to the local spoons in the city centre 10/10

Atmosphere great music choice was also fun. I have the burger was good the burger patty itself was a little bit dry I think it had been left under the grill a little bit too long to melt the cheese but overall was good fries for great and seasoned well. My wife have the chilli fries great portion size lots of flavor. I would highly recommend the Greyhound there is a lot of things on the menu I'm looking forward to trying and also the value was excellent.

I can't fault the staff or the food a great pub. I didn't think early 2000 US teen indy music is my taste and perhaps they'll play something else next time I go. Will definitely return.

Really great service - Stuart was very helpful on the phone with the pre-orders I needed to leave, for a large group of 12 people. Great atmosphere in the outdoor conservatory area

We went for fathers day, I booked for 3.30pm for 8 of us and the food was wonderful however we was told whilst eating our main that we couldn't have puddings which let it down slightly. Stuart the barman was very attentive and friendly. Will be back again , hopefully we will get a chance to order puddings next time.

Was really looking forward to a Father’s Day Sunday Roast. Disappointing. Tasty but very small portion sizes. Table of 5 left still hungry and then told they have stopped doing desserts!

A great find! We were a bit apprehensive at the start going in... But they have an amazing selection of locally brewed beers and good food! Slightly on the pricy side, but to be expected from a city centre pub. Will definitely be visiting again.

Booked the function room and terrace for my 30th Birthday. All staff were superb and friendly which is such a credit to the pub! Comms via email and always quick to respond, during the night I felt truly looked after and nothing felt too much to ask despite knowing how busy they were downstairs too! It was like hiring from friends tbh, everything has just been really easy to arrange and sort with them, including return of the deposit. Room could do with a paint touch up but this is literatly the only thing I can pick at- and tbh it was more relaxed with decorating it which was a relief!

Visited at the weekend with some friends and family. We were all very impressed with the choice of vegan food. The food was nice, the beer was great and it was a good atmosphere. We will certainly visit again.

A pleasant, quirky, dog friendly pub with various seating areas inside and out. The brisket is really good and there was a fair selection of drinks. Only knocked off a star because the bar service was slow and staff were only focusing on one area through a little walkway.

A nice place with a decent selection of beers, but the food is pretty mediocre and quite a few choices weren’t available - which is pretty poor for a Saturday evening in my opinion. After the meal I had to tell the waitress to clear the table as well. Stick to the beer and you’ll be OK.

Rude staff who seem to be very stressed, even though there were only about 10 other customers in. Really odd, bad vibes. Bar man greeted me with "if you're ordering drinks you'll be waiting ages because I've got a ****tonne of stuff to do".

We visited with friends as it was GF friendly. Initially, when we entered the staff were awkward with our booking. They then took our drinks orders and told us to find a table. We then ordered food. We ordered in two separate orders at the bar. Only minutes in-between, this was only because the person taking orders wondered off before taking ours. Our friends’ food came out 20 minutes after ordering, not bad timing. However, ours came out nearly 25 minutes after. Before our food came out my husband went to the bar to ask why it was so much after our friends. The staff behind the bar tried to blame it on us and made the excuse that one ordered through the app the other at the bar. This was not the case at all. We both ordered at the bar as recommended by staff. It was not busy at all, otherwise we might have understood the delay. When the food did arrive, most of it was enjoyable. But, by the time it arrived, my husband and I felt past the point of being hungry. Staff were not as friendly or helpful as you might think in this situation. We won’t be retuning in the future.

We've eaten here a few times recently as I'm coeliac and love the fact that they have a decent selection of gluten free food and beer. Last night's visit was disappointing though - we ordered a selection of sharer dishes. Most were nice, but the chicken wings were off and smelled of wet dog. I returned to the bar to complain and the man serving was quite rude, spoke to me like I was stupid and suggested that it was maybe the smell of brine, then checked with the kitchen and told me that they had only been open a few days and were in date until tomorrow. No apology, no attempt to offer me some fresh ones or make it right, just tried to make out that I was an idiot and eventually gave me a refund for that one dish. I am not an idiot, know what gone off meat smells like and will not be returning sadly. What sort of a chef trusts a date on an open packet of raw meat more than their own nose? Shame, as we were enjoying eating here until last night!

Nice venue for room hire, and very reasonable price. Balcony with seating but unfortunately too much rain for my booking. Accommodates 70 with seating for around half. 100 if use balcony. Only criticism would be strict on music volume, and has to be off at 11pm. We had live acoustic and never had issue with volume at other venues.

Warm friendly atmosphere and fantastic menu with plenty of choice. Great drinks and good food.

Update February 2023: Nothing much has changed, this time I ate there. Had the the burger with pulled beef with triple-cooked fries. It was very good, which adds to my recommendation. The number of cask ales is solid: 4 handpumps on the front bar 3 to the back (Different ones, apparently), all well kept. Staff was very nice, too. Original review: Excellent real ale pub on Friar Gate: Fine selection of non-standard hand pumped ales, all well kept. Recommended: Dashingly Dark from the Derby Brewing Company. Friendly staff, great community atmosphere, not too loud. Quite comfy, too. Kept in great shape. Definitely worth a look for a Derby pub crawl, even if it's a short walk from the city centre.

A rack of local ales to taste and a pair of deep fried Mars bars for the kids. The journey home was interesting! Lovely pub, super helpful staff, support your local hostelries! (And independent brewers)

Excellent choice of drinks many of which are brewed locally. Good pub food choice and lovely staff throughout. Special mention to Andy who runs the pub quiz on a Monday night which is great fun and always well attended!

The staff, beer, food and environment make this place what it is today! They've had some iffy staff in the past, along with cooks... I won't call them chefs as they were diabolical. Fell out with the food for a few years but needed a great pint. Now, they have chefs, chefs that can actually present a customer with a great dish. Most definitely under rated is the Greyhound. Get yourselves there, I'm sure you'll agree!

Good states food for sure. Carolina Pulled pork is good. I added some vinegar to make it taste like real carolina bbq but one of the best sweet/smokey tastes I've had.

Went for a drink and a spot of lunch. They have a range of alcohol free beers and the one I tried was pretty good. The food was served pretty fast and tasted nice. The service was good and with few more people inside it would be a lively kind of place. Thanks team Greyhound!

I recently left a 3 star review, having visited on a Sunday and been disappointed by the food (compared to many previous delicious meals). A couple of weeks ago we visited mid week with friends and the food was back to what I expected. Top tip: avoid Sunday and you're laughing.

Food was incredible! probably the best vegan burger I have ever had - closest in both the taste and texture of meat! such a variety of flavours and options. the seating area was peaceful and warm even though outside. will be returning soon!!

I have a lot of fond memories of the Greyhound, it used to be a real favourite for food - somewhere you'd go when hungry and be rewarded with enormous burgers that had to be held together with a skewer. Alas, no more. Ate there on a Sunday afternoon, had the pulled pork, everything came out on individual dishes which seems to be a ploy to disguise the minute portion sizes. The pork itself sat in a pool of water and was cold and bland. Those who had burgers were less disappointed in taste, but remarked how small they/the sides were. The choice of beer is great, but I'm not sure I'd come back to eat again. Hopefully after the cost of living crisis passes normal service resumes. Recognising it was a Sunday, it felt short staffed, one poor young lady fending for herself. She did all she could and was friendly. I wonder whether management ever visit to see the impact of these cost cutting measures.

It's been almost 3 months since I last visited the Greyhound and it's only got better. Great pub. So far, every visit to Derby has included lunch at the Greyhound and I don't expect it to change. I love the Sunday roast!

I arranged our annual family day in the back restaurant area. The space was just enough (23 of us) and blocked off so nice and private. The staff were so helpful, the food (chose 3). buffet types) was delicious and plentiful. Some great menu choices. The sun was shining so the courtyard was opened up You all helped make our family day go down so well. Thank you to your attentive staff and great chef

Nicely renovated inside, moderately priced drinks. Has a online ordering system that can be a bit awkward to use but you do get points for purchases. Food is pretty good, and they have a fun quiz night on Mondays from 8 for only a pound !

Had my baby shower here recently and I cannot fault it. The room was clean and tidy, and they had already set up the tables as I wanted before I got there. Food was absolutely delicious and my family were very pleased with the 2 Roasts and a bottle of wine for less than £30 deal. Staff very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
