Lovely welcoming feel. An old building with all it quirkiness. Comfortable, relaxing. Great night sleep before airport trip. Stayed room 2, lovely shower. We will be staying again. If you are not a fan of corporate hotels this is an option. Great bar. Everything closed at 11pm so quiet night. No breakfast but try Covent Garden cafe next door. A massive breakfast for less than £6, beats airport prices. Only down side was parking limited. Ok as arrived late, be careful of pay & display. Only negative for accommodation was no spoons for cup tea in morning and could do with decaf coffee sachets. Looking for airport stop over try this. Will be going back and recommending to friends. Only 30min to Manchester airport and that's with road works at 10am. To the licensees thank you for your warm welcome and hospitality

The landlord at Red Bull sorted me out with a room last minute, which I'm extremely grateful for. The room was lovely, the bed a king or super king with a comfy mattress and with an ensuite. Perfect! The staff at the pub explained everything and were very welcoming. It's not a bed and breakfast, so the pub was closed when we left, from midnight the day before, with the means of getting in after that. Checkout was 10am and we managed to park directly outside the pub, which is a bonus, as parking would otherwise be tricky.

I first visited Hillgate almost 50 years ago when it had a famous pub crawl. Most of the pubs have gone as has ( recently) the Robinson's brewery. The Red Bull remains as a great Robinson pub. Lovely multi room pub retains a traditional feel. Large rear beer garden. Also a Pool room. Paulicarus ordered an excellent pint of Unicorn. A refreshing golden ale.Mrs MDL a pint of Madri. About £9.55 for the two.

We stayed in the accommodation for a few nights .The room was lovely and there was one lovely member of staff who was wonderful and made us feel welcome ( barmaid with bluish hair) I gather the pub recently changed hands> Food wise The risotto was fab but the chips were incredibly oily and soggy. The idea of guests staying seemed a little confusing for them and although there are a few rooms we never saw anyone else Our room could easily be accessed via nice quick internal carpeted stairs but we were told that wasnt allowed so every time we wanted to ask anything or return to our room we had to go outside in the rain and cold up a very wet slippery fire escape and unlock two gates and a door to get to our room and back. The room wasn't cleaned / beds madebat all in 3 days which seemed odd although we would have been ok with that if we were told also meant no top ups of milk towels etc. The other main bug bear was that when the pub was closed i.e. all morning and late evenngs the wi fi seemed to be switched off ...and of course out of hours we had no way of contacting anyone( as the pub was all locked up and there was no contact or any other information in the room. We tried facebook messaging but never got a reply) which also meant we had to leave without seeing anyone as it was all locked up..... but it was an exceptionally warm and beautiful room and a really comfy bed and great shower the best room we have stayed in in a long time so like I say mixed feelings. It could be a perfect place to stay with just a little more organisation and consideration on the part of the owners with regard to room service, communication and not sending the long way outside to go to inside to our room . Like I say the one barmaid was lovely but clearly obeying management orders re access to our rooms etc.She is a real asset. The rest of the establishment could learn a lot from her.

This to me was always a solid 4/5 place to go at lunch. For less than £10 you could have a nice sandwich, chips and a drink. No longer. Amid the beauty and the beast candles and hipster cactus on tables you will find the pictured sandwich for £5.95 and soggy chips an additional £2.50. The sandwich was advertised as in a bloomer but as you can see below it was not. We did complain at the time and some explanations were given and my colleague was refunded for her sandwich while I refused a refund on the chips. In the hospitality industry honesty is always the best policy. We were told the bloomers had been an issue but were coming soon but this was after we had complained rather than at the ordering point. While I went through the issues I had the response I recurved was ‘don’t you like change’ to which I replied ‘not for changes sake’. The manager did say she would bring us some paper with a date and name so we could receive a 10% discount in the future however that never materialised. No bother because I wouldn’t eat there again anyway. 1 member of staff is still there from the previous regime. A lovely barmaid who was more than helpful. She knows the locals and what works - time for management to listen to her!

I came to meet my partner and his family here on the saturday 15th evening at around 10:30 pm.We always come here for food and drinks on various occasions and is a local pub for us and has been for about four years,we have seen the red bull change hands recently, equally good management and standards. On Saturday 15th I was asked for I'd by the guy in the checked shirt, I did not have it on me on this one occasion, as I had just come from work and this was a very last minute meet up, I'm actually surprised the girl didn't recognise me behind the bar to be honest.I understand it's his job but I had been in two days before on Wednesday night ,l got served by the blonde haired lady in the pony tail no problem. just so you can identify us we sat in your dining area opposite your kitchen, buying a great deal of whiskey and gin and tonics.Fair enough I didn't have I'd but he had the most abrupt attitude I have ever encountered, so rude to our family member who had come from Birmingham to see us.He pulled a pint of unicorn off and asked: "is that for him, because I'll take it back" and actually took it back, so luckily my partner had it when explained that it wasn't for me .There was 5 of us in our group and we all went elsewhere because of the drama, fuss and discusting attitude that he had when all we wanted was a quiet family drink we were really let down.To conclude we will not be stepping foot in here again, there is many other bars in stockport such as baker's vaults who do recognise regulars and who do give excellent customer service much more deserving of my family's hard earned money what a complete shame.

This is a traditional pub that has in my opinion been slightly "over improved" but that means its clean, tidy and comfortable and my wife is happy to visit, so it would suit most folks. I lunched here through the week on a number of occasions and the food has always been good. Today I had the Beef and Ale pie, Robison's Ale of course! Served in one of those pot pie pots, there was plenty of tasty beef under a nice crispy crust. I think the chips were double cooked, so crisp outside with soft middle. Nice selection of vedge, properly cooked for a change. If you prefer something a bit different the sharing platters, especially the fish one make a a nice change. It can get busy if some one in the nearby offices is having a "do" but then the staff generally give an honest estimate of serving times. Of course there is always a range of Beers, from the Robinsons "Family" of course so probably one for most ale lovers. Disabled users should not be put off by the steps. Level access is available from the rear via the car park, which only holds a couple of cars, so is normally full...

The pictures of the room are great but that's where it stops. We should have turned back when we called the pub to inquire about parking and the lady at the other end put the phone down on us because the bar noise was too load. Payment is taken when you arrive, I assume this is because you would not pay the next morning after your night of non sleep. We arrived at 7pm and the room was noisy from peoples laughing from below (the bar), we then ate out. The breakfast supplied is in a bag in the room, porridge (no spoon supplied), carton of orange, alpen bar, pain au chocolat. We got back to the pub at 9pm it wasn't busy but rave music was been played at volume (strange because the drinkers were at the older end of the scale). The music in the room was only slightly less noisy than downstairs, obviously no sound barrier had been fitted when the rooms were converted to guest rooms. Although the bar shut at 12 (according to the signs) the music continued at volume till 1am. The room was very warm (even though the radiator was off) so I opened the window I then experienced the mixed noises of Stockports night life, mostly cars driving on this busy road. The cleaner arrives at 6am to hoover (the same time as the planes start flying overhead). So your window for sleeping in this pub is only a few hours, that's if you can sleep as our mattress had no padding so we experienced springs digging into our bodies all night. Sadly the manager was out when we left, so I could not share my experience.

Stayed for one night’s B&B at The Red Bull and after having browsed their menu online and noted that they offered Spam Fritters as a starter, I knew I wanted to eat there. It was a quiet Tuesday evening and the pub had a good range of ales on hand pump of which two were sampled. I chose the Spam Fritters to start and Sausages & Mash to follow. The Spam Fritters were a pleasant surprise served with a fresh salad and tangy dipping sauce. The Sausages & Mash was plentiful, tasty and the accompanying veg nicely cooked. There was lashings of onion gravy over the mash which might have been better served separately in a jug, but otherwise good. Service was friendly and at £20 for two courses and two pints of ale, good value. The menu has plenty to offer so if I am visiting Stockport again, I will no doubt be visiting The Red Bull.

The portion sizes were good and food was nice tasting, the main tart item on the menu could have done with some sauce for the vegetables, but that's just my taste buds. My wife and I booked in for the night, as we were attending a 70th Birthday party, for a friend who was over from Tenerife. We were greeted with a friendly smile by a lady who said her name was Karen and welcomed us quite warmly, saying our room was ready. After taking us to our room, she explained the key situations for "late night" revellers and we unpacked. We were very impressed with this spacious, tastefully-decorated and well furnished room. The en-suite was large and modern and quite impressive by many standards. There were complimentary tea and coffee facilities and we were very satisfied, especially after our dreadful experience at the Adams Guest House in Oxford earlier in the year. The pub is just a few minutes walk to Higher and Lower Hillgate, with its cobbled street and quaint shops, leading to the modern shopping precinct. We returned to the pub and I took photos of the rooms, which were decorated for Christmas with various stylish garlands, etc., and the old-fireplace suitably had a "Dickensian" feel about it. Lots of tables in the restaurant area were laid out for Christmas meals, with crackers, etc., and later on we saw many diners obviously enjoying themselves. It was great seeing friends again and we had a wonderful time and the buffet, which consisted of a chicken curry, chilli and a hot pot! Each one was so delicious, people kept going back for more and we complimented the Chef and these dishes had the flavour each needed. The bar has a very good range of ales and I sampled seven of them, my favourites being "Trooper" and "Indulgence" - glad I was staying the night! We enjoyed it so much, that we are going to visit again for lunch, as the menu looked really good.Breakfast is a "Continental" style, and it is put in a bag in your room. Orange drink, bottle of water, chocolate biscuit, croissant, and a pot of porridge - just add hot water. If you have a sweet tooth, you will enjoy this.We slept really well and the beds were so comfortable. This is a great place to stay - great food, great ales, easy for the shops and friendly and helpful staff. What more can you ask?And that is no bull! Thank you Karen for your hospitality.

The Red Bull multi-tasks to an amazing standard. It is a superb Pub with superb Food and 4 quality En-suite Bedrooms. It was chosen by my best friend (Richard) because it was CAMRA recommended. What a fantastic choice. The Red Bull was built in 1838 (so full of architectural character) and is part of the Robinsons Brewery estate - so Robinsons Beers dominate and the Trooper Ale at 4.8% was in fine form. The very spacious Bedroom was easily 3+* standard, the en-suite was sublime with absolutely everything you would hope for. There was a boxed Breakfast package with loads of choice and hot drink making facilities with biscuits. The atmosphere in The Red Bull was quite amazing. There is a very high quality of clientele who were so friendly - obviously attracted by what the Red Bull offers. Having decided to review the Red Bull in the restaurant category, it is time to talk about the food. For a Pub, the menu is large and varied. Many restaurants would not offer such a variety. I chose the Lamb Shank at £9.95p which was "to die for". Superbly tender in a beautiful mint gravy with quality mash and veg. Rich had the Homemade Steak and Robinsons Ale Pie ((£8.25p) with Chips, Veg and Gravy - a clean plate said it all!! There are 11 starters (2 vegetarian), 21 main courses (2 veggie) and 4 salads (1 veggie) - which for a "pub" is outstanding. I cannot wait to have another weekend in Stockport and where else would I base myself? The Red Bull is absolutely top rate and should be well worth a stay. Why stop in Manchester City Centre when the Red Bull is just a few miles away? Go for quality and one of the friendliest Pubs in England with food to die for. No brainer. The Staff are absolutely outstanding and create everything that is good about The Red Bull - support them because they deserve it by service beyond the call of "duty"!!

A very limited and poor menu. Food was straight out of Icelands bargain end shelf and the furniture was literally falling apart. Looks like it has been intentionally rundown and was only used by people staying at the premier inn next door.

This place has been taken over and its prices are exorbitant to say the least particularly in relation to portion size and overall quality. Our bill was over £100 and we didn’t even have starters. A garlic bread to share came that was three round pieces (like off a baguette from tesco) which we had to share round- we thought it would be a round pizza style which is what you usually get and is far more generous. I would say one tapas dish was ok but even that was overpriced for what it was - it was £8 for small chicken breast with one rasher of bacon wrapped round in blue cheese sauce. This commercially would cost about £1.50 to make! The other food was bland and lacking in quality, but if you’re going to serve this level then at least significantly lower your prices. Otherwise I am afraid I don’t think this place will survive. On a side note of relevance my partner heard two chaps outside criticising the price of the pints, which have apparently gone about by a pound which we were not aware of. Your choice but I would avoid.
