This place doesn't look that good from the front, so we were sceptical upon entering. But I guess the phrase 'never judge a book..' is reality. Staff were very accommodating to us and friendly, happy to do the food just how we wanted it and quite a nice place to sit in, kept fairly clean.

We stopped by chance at The real pie company and bought a fresh steak and mushroom pie and a Turkey, sage and onion pie and couldn’t fault either of them. What was amazing was there were several pieces of Turkey and steak in the pie which were an inch thick and real meat not processed meat. This is take away only however, you can’t eat in. They also sell frozen and chilled pies you can cook at home.

The staff at this small restaurant were very polite and extremely helpful. They went out of their way to serve me with difficult dietary issues. Husband had the most delicious chocolate cake although making a decision was not easy with the yummy choices they had.

It’s just off the high street in a little precinct. We got take away drinks and cakes. The drinks which were the deluxe hot chocolate and deluxe cafe latte were very, very nice. The cakes all looked very tasty and the ones we choose were good. We didn’t see any pies but we got there as they were winding down for the day so maybe had sold out. Shop was well presented and plenty of seats. Very clean. Does not accept dogs.

The warm welcome you receive every time is impressive. Thus us a very busy coffee shop. But the staff are very friendly even when they are run off their feet. Which is often. The coffees , cakes, panini''s are excellent. As well as a lovely cup of tea. Always served with a biscuit and a smile. It would be an in justice not to mention the renowned afternoon tea. Only available if prebooked. It exceeds any afternoon tea I have eaten anywhere else, including Langham in London, Celtic manor, St pierre to name a few. A real gem if a place.

This place was a most enjoyable find. I had a very good quality coffee and an absolutely delicious black cherry Frangipane with pouring cream made by the talented in shop baker. Well worth the slightly elevated cost. If I ever pass that way again I will be trying out some of the other temping cakes.

Have gone in here a few times, the staff are always so friendly, coffee is great and an amazing selection of cakes. I had a cheese and ham croissant and a chocolate brownie, the brownie was the best I have ever had. A lovely place to meet a friend or have a quiet coffee.

Staff always so friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Cake portions are enormous and I can rarely finish so a take out box is a great option. Cakes available to take out, buy some and while you are drinking your coffee they get them ready and bring them to you. Comfy sofa mean you want to stop a while and watch the world go by, unfortunately the view outside is probably the only downside to this little gem. Great for kids, choices of ice cream is good. Choices of cake are amazing, always have trouble deciding, but never disappointed.

Just spent two nights in Lydney and took a ten minute wander from the motel looking for some breakfast. I have to say the toasted bacon and tomato roll offered here was smashing. So was the coffee. So was the service, both mornings. You wouldn't know it was there from the main road without the A-board that draws attention. Well worth seeking out. Opens at 0900.

It has now changed it's name from the Pie and Cake to Coffee Local. It is still in the Regent Arcade. Unfortunately it does not serve Pies any longer but does serve excellent Pannis. I went for the BBQ pulled pork and my wife went for the Brie and Bacon. They were both very good but too large to allow for a cake as well. The coffee and staff were very good.

Very friendly staff and efficient. Pleasant surroundings and quite eclectic. Cakes to die for, although quite expensive, well worth the money. One not to miss. Tucked out of the way and maybe missed unless you know the café is there, but still have quite a large cliental. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly and always have a smile and a pleasant word. The only drawback is I believe they close around 3 o'clock and there are times I would go in there later but this is just a small thing. All in all 10/10

The homemade cakes are very aesthetically pleasing & taste even better than they look! The service is fantastic & very helpful always happy & smiling & willing to sort any issues you have, not that you'll have any because they're so brilliant! Very good prices also which is great, all together a super duper place well worth a visit!

Came across this place a few weeks ago while on business, and liking my coffee as I do was recommended to call in by a local shop keeper. The first thing that greeted me was the aroma of freshly ground coffee, the second thing was to see how busy this place was and I thought how could this be in a small and average town in the forest of dean, but after sampling it's wears of the best coffee I have tasted in a long time and the wonderful selection (of homemade cakes and pastries) I can understand why. I was greeted with a smile and great service and it shows how these people work hard and are passionate about their business. I can not recommend this establishment more if you are in the area, what a wonderful change it is to find a coffee shop that cares about their customers and what they produce, rather than these mass coffee chains.....Well done The Real Deal Pie & Cake Co. I will be back. You are a credit it your profession.........

This is the sort of out of the way place that gives you satisfaction for discovering. I had a coffee - which was a regular coffee, but it's not the beverages that make the Pie and Cake worth visiting. The clue is in the name: lots of lovely homemade pies and cakes, all of which make it hard to choose what to order as there is lots of choice. I ordered a big slice of cake: previously I've taken home a lovely pie as an extra. I'm not from Lydney but try to pop in when I'm in the town - my in-laws live here. I'm surprised by Jane J's mean-spirited take on the shop's surroundings below. You could view it as in a dilapidated arcade if you were that way inclined. Or you could say the Pie and Cake shop, like the highly recommended restaurant The Ugly Duckling round the corner, is doing its bit to reinvigorate a town centre and high street hit by hard times. I prefer to do that: I suppose it makes the cakes taste a little bit better. Keep it up Pie and Cake people, there's no pleasing some people...

A rather gloomy corner in a somewhat dilapidated 'precinct'. The service was friendly enough and there was a good selection of cakes. No de-caff, skimmed milk etc. appeared to be offered on the drinks list so I asked if de-caff coffee was available. I was told it was- but at an additional charge of 30p! What's that about? It costs no more to buy or to prepare and I have not come across anywhere else which imposes a surcharge of this kind. When I protested I was told- 'well that's it if you want it'. As I was with others I submitted to the charge and was served a mediocre coffee of what seemed to be a cheap blend. For those of us who genuinely need to drink de-caff on medical advice this amounts to a discriminatory charge. I shall not be going back.

Lydney is not the most exciting place in the world. We travelled on the Forest of Dean Railway and decided to spend a couple of hours looking around. It was raining and we couldn't find a place to have a coffee as we had a dog with us, and most places wouldn't let us in with him. We came across this shop and were delighted to find that they had an outside area [under cover] and served great coffee. We also had lunch there - nice salads and sandwiches. Nice staff as well.
