We stopped off at the Rams Head for a couple of nights en-route to Cornwall where we were meeting up with our family. The pub is a lovely authentic old building with lots of genuine character, not a manufactured character that you tend to get in large chain pubs. Our room was delightful with an enormous log burner set into an ancient stone fireplace. The room was well appointed with a large brass bed and period furniture. The en-suite was modern and well equipped. Breakfast was served in the dining area of the pub which again is full of character and has a lovely country vibe. Breakfast choice was excellent with cereal, and a choice of full English, eggs Benedict and eggs florentine on offer. The quality of the produce, all locally sourced, was excellent, especially the eggs which were true free range with deep yellow yolks. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. We would definitely recommend The Rams Head and would certainly stay there again.

I have to say this was the worst Sunday lunch I have ever experienced. Starting out by going into the restaurant and being seated in an empty side room all alone for the majority of our meal with no music and dreadful service - as felt we were forgotten about. The starter arrived - 1/2 pint prawns with shells on. The prawns were covered in eggs, after shelling them they were tiny prawns and there was no finger bowl or plate for the shells. My main arrived - I ordered roast chicken but a leg and a wing arrived (hardly any meat) with a burnt Yorkshire and undercooked ‘roast potatoes’ - the sizing of the portions were small. The room was not prepared for dining - chairs had to be removed for our tables to seat other guests, even in outside entrances. After the long wait of 2 hours to serve our 2 courses, we asked for the bill and when asked how was our food, we couldn’t lie and said the truth. They suggested that they were short staff and super busy, which I can understand. However, we booked weeks in advance and were placed in a forgotten room with poor food. I am afraid we will not return.

Came here last night for the first time and will be back. Served by the charming Ozzy who was engaging just enough to make us feel well looked after but not too much. My starter of moules mariniere was cooked in a lovely classic white wine sauce and very enjoyable but it was my main that stole the show. The beef was so melt in the mouth tender it was sublime. I can’t recall having better beef than that. As for the dessert trio I was expecting three one inch squares of mini desserts. Be warned you get three proper portions of dessert and all too yummy to not eat - back to the “diet” today. The setting and decor was very pleasant and although small and only two other tables in the room we were eating in I didn’t feel that this inhibited was what a second date at all. The spacing between tables meant it remained intimate and I don’t recall hearing anyone else’s conversations so assume they didn’t hear ours - but maybe that was down to the quality of my date!

Welcomed by a roaring log fire, helpful and attentive staff, we enjoyed a fabulous meal of, platter of sharing home made bread with olives, then rack of locally sourced lamb with a herb crust, which was perfection, and delicious choux pastry desert with chantilly cream and salted caramel, the food is superbly presented, and there’s a selection of fine wines or Devon ales and ciders to accompany any choice from the menu. A great atmosphere, excellent service, a good menu with something for everyone, what’s not to like about this place. Highly recommended, definitely 5 Star!

Took my girlfriend here for a meal last week. Food was cooked very well, but they were only child's portions. (For £20) I complained that I was served just half a potato, cut into four pieces. If I wanted a work of art, I would go to the Tate Modern. I wanted a meal. Chef said no one had complained before. Well I am the first. I came into this pub hungry. I left hungry and went for a takeaway. If you want a meal, I suggest you go anywhere else!

This pub was recommended when we were on holiday in the area. We booked for a Saturday evening that was not busy at 7:00 pm. The service was extremely slow and poor, we had to chase up our starters after 1 hour of waiting , then having waited a further 1 hour for our main courses, we gave up and left.

This is a lovely old pub in a pretty village in mid Devon. It was bought by a French chef 5 yrs ago and his food is delicious. We stayed for 2 nights in pretty awful weather, but the woodburners were wonderful, the welcome from the amazing Karen was warm and her energy throughout the night, serving both bar and restaurant food, was incredible, all with a cheerful personality. Nico brought his food to the table with a welcoming smile. I'm gluten free and was well catered for. We'll definitely be back. A good place to break a journey to west Cornwall.

Accidentally came across this pub earlier this year whilst looking to buy a house. We now live in the village and have been several times, latest visit was with visiting family. One member has been to a number of 4 and 5 star mitchelin restaurants. She said it was better than the mitchelin restaurant food. I just know it’s absolutely stunning food in a quaint pub with the nicest staff. My all time favourite place to eat.

We ate there for the 3rd time recently last night. Every time the food has been superb and between us and our dining companions we’ve trawled much of the menu. Always beautiful presented and wonderfully tasty. The service does seem to depend on whose working. Last night was not great, over an hour and a half before any food appeared in front of us and it wasn’t that busy. Previous visits the service has been fine though. Don’t turn up starving as we did, just in case it’s an off night but we’ll be back over and over again

Really impressed with the standard of food. Had three courses on a Sunday. To start nduja scotch egg with homemade chutney, scotch egg was runny in the middle and slightly spiced 👌 chutney delicious and full of flavour. Sunday roast was well seasoned parsnips, colly cheese and roast potatoes done well. Pots crispy, parsnip a little crispy with sweetness colly cheese indulgently cheesy. I had belly pork, again very well seasoned the only thing I would say it missed was some crackling. Otherwise perfect. Desserts were original showed technical skill and also (the main thing) were delicious. This was surprisingly cheap and the food easily rivals restaurants that hold two rosettes. The service was casual warm and friendly. Will recommend and go again.

Wonderful food and a great selection of wines. The good: Hmmmm. Lady waitress was super super lovely, well versed, articulate and able to present herself to customers. Steaks were cooked really well....... wine good. Gluten free bread freely and happily available (nice touch)The not so good:Took FAR too long to be served (please don’t blame COVID). We were served by the head of front of staff I think. Soup tasteless. Please don’t put out a menu out that has barely 50% of it available. Rack of ok lamb cold. Also £3.50 for 4 bits of bread; not a good show. Don’t order their special “chocolate” dessert. It’s vile. I told them so to a response of “everyone else likes it” - not what a customer wants to hear from a manager. Such poor service from him. Put the lovely lady in charge of running the show! Who is the larger guy running this place?!?! The front of house staff man. The French one; for he is NOT well versed, nor articulate nor able to present well to customers. He REALLY and sadly brings the atmosphere down. Food 3.5* (although I resent paying £4 for bread and being told “everyone else likes it” when the dessert was abysmal) Staff - lady waitress 5*, awful front of house large man 2*Will probably not return despite knowing they need our custom. Booked for dinner here the evening of my birthday while holidaying in the area. The pub itself was nice enough but we wouldn’t know as my partner and I were put in a side room with no other guests and no atmosphere what so ever.... we asked if we could be sat with all the other dinners but told there was no room. I think a little planning wouldn’t go amis that if you put a table of 2 in separate room... put at least another table in the room too. It also didn’t help that the toilet was off our room so we were on show for all guests to see. Through the doorway we could hear the music from the main pub, and hear that it was busy. We were disappointed not to be part of it. There also wasn’t much staff working so we were left for long periods waiting (forgotten about you could say!) also not too many COVID precautions in place that I could see... menus, be it paper were being reused for different diners, no distancing when taking orders etc. The food was nice enough but was expecting more from the evening. Wouldn’t go back, and probably would recommend.

My boyfriend and I arrived at the Rams Head Inn on Friday 7th August and paid in full as we checked in. We were shown to our room and told that the tap in the sink was out of order, but "a plumber should be coming today to fix it". Therefore we had to wash our hands in the bath for the remainder of the day. We had arrived with my brother and his family who were staying in the room below ours which unfortunately, had not been cleaned or changed from the previous guests, and by the speed at which the manager prepared it for them, I would guess that there was no disinfection or sterilisation as per any COVID precautions. At dinner, for which we had booked a table, we were shown to our sticky and dirty table in the back room with no other guests, where we sat for 20 minutes waiting for someone to bring us a menu, until my brother went to the bar and asked for some himself. We were brought a set menu which had a vegetarian starter but no main, so as a vegetarian myself, I was disappointed. We waited another 20 minutes for someone to come and take our order which never happened. So we left after telling the staff and went up the road to the other pub. The following day at breakfast, which was very good, I asked the manager when our tap was likely to be fixed because it's not very nice leaning over the toilet to wash our hands in the bath. He shrugged his shoulders and said the plumber will hopefully be coming today but not sure as it's in the country. We then all went out for the day. When we returned around early evening, we noticed that the entrance to the resident part of the building was wet with water leaking down the wall and dripping on us as we walked through. We went into our room and our broken tap was leaking water down the unit and onto the tiled floor. I went down to the bar to tell the staff including the manager who all knew about it but had failed to warn us, or put any caution signs out. The chef came up to our room with a local man and had a look at our tap, then told me he would send some extra towels up. I put down our spare hand towel to mop up the water. Later on that evening no one had brought us any towels or attempted to do anything about the leak. By now the hand towel was sodden, so I went to the bar and asked for some more because the leak was getting worse. No one showed any interest but someone did eventually bring us 6 more towels. When back in our room for the night I closed the curtains and noticed that one of them was hanging off its rail. I put all of the towels across the whole bathroom floor space and by the morning they were all saturated. We both had to walk across the soaking wet towels throughout the night and in the morning to use the toilet, wash our hands in the bath, and to brush our teeth. I found out I was pregnant 2 days before we came on this trip so slipping over on a wet bathroom floor was something I wanted to avoid. As we were packing our belongings ready to check out, I noticed that on the tea tray was an opened double pack of biscuits with one biscuit missing. Neither of us had opened it or taken a biscuit out so we gathered it must have been left there from the previous guests. Lovely. By now the leak in the entrance to the building was even worse and was dripping through the ceiling light. I went to the bar to check out and the manager gave us our drinks bill for the 2 nights. I told him I was expecting some kind of discount due to the state of our room for the past 2 nights and that not only had we not had a fully functioning sink but it had now flooded our room and was a huge hazard. He shrugged his shoulders and said because we'd booked through booking.com he couldn't do anything about it. So I asked for a discount on our drinks bill which was £48. He shrugged his shoulders again and said it had gone through the till and couldn't do anything about it. I told him about the curtain falling down and the biscuits left from the previous people. He shrugged his shoulders. I asked him if he was the manager because at this point I wasn't aware that he was. He said yes. I was SHOCKED. I asked to speak to the owner, he told me he wasn't here, so I asked for his contact details. He wrote down the email address for enquiries, and told me it was the owners email address. My guess is that any email sent to this address will go directly to the so-called manager so I have not attempted it.My brother and his family stayed another 2 nights and told me that at breakfast the morning after we left, the manager told them there were no eggs and he "couldn't be bothered to go to the shop to get some". We had left some clothes in the cupboard in our room by accident, so I asked my sister in law if she could retrieve them for us. She managed to do so and said the room was still exactly how we left it and with the sodden towels still on the bathroom floor, this was nearly 24 hours after we checked out. We paid nearly £240 in total for that trip and it was one of the worst places we have ever stayed. Not so much for the dysfunctional facilities and the flooded, hazardous bathroom floor, but for the total lack of care, empathy or interest from the manager.

We stayed for 6 nights here, chosen to be away from the crowded coast. It’s a lovely old inn, full of character, and even in this post-lockdown period we felt safe and comfortable. The food was fantastic, we can particularly recommend the scotch egg, baked Camembert, lamb cutlets. beef fillet, hake, and mackerel caponata. Thanks to Nico and the staff for an enjoyable stay.

Managed to get a table at this very busy restaurant whilst on holiday last week and we are so glad we did. Caprese salad, ribeye steak (exceptional), rice pudding special. All lipsmackingly good. All meat served here comes from the village butcher just over the road.. Superb. Friendly barman/waiter despite being so very busy and the only person doing everything else bar the cooking! Lovely treat, thank you

Everything you could want in an excellent village pub in a beautiful village. Fantastic food! Classics with a gastronomic flair. Staff were lovely and very attentive. We had the fish special and steak. Both were beautifully cooked tasted fantastically fresh. Decor and ambience good - honestly what a local to have! Would be back again and again and again. P.s. organic rose is almost toooo drinkable. Perfect for a quaffable treat!

We were looking for somewhere to eat lunch during a rainy half term and stumbled across this little gem. We were warmly welcomed and given a nice table by the fire.I can honestly say we had an amazing meal, not a huge choice menu wise compared to others, but we all found something we liked the sound of (picky son included). Everything was so tasty, well presented and exceeded our expectations. We even stayed for puddings! A very friendly, relaxed atmosphere, we a thrilled to have found an amazing restaurant 20 mins from home. We will definitely be back to try Sunday Lunch. Thank you for making us feel so welcome

Our Sunday roast was one of the best I have had in a very long time. Perfectly cooked Lamb, sourced from the local butcher, Patrick. Crisp / fluffy roasties, a good selection of veg with a divine gravy. Compliments to the chef, Nico. Lovely service and very good value.

Booked this pub for one night to break our journey en route to Cornwall. We found it having googled ‘pubs near Crediton.’ What a find! Excellent all round. Staff were welcoming and friendly, our bedroom was cosy with very comfortable bed and the food was exceptional. Delicious dinner cooked by French Chef/Patron. Breakfast was also good, we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

We were lucky to get a room at the Ram's Head, after a bad experience at the Malt Scoop Inn. Room was lovely, decorated beautifully with a wonderfully comfortable kingsize bed. Bar and restaurant also wonderful, we ordered rack of lamb which was amazing, then the apricot macaroon and the sticky toffee pudding, both lovely. Breakfast slightly disappointing, hence 4 stars not 5. They had run out of both pastries and smoked salmon. But plenty of other choices available, and the food we did have was all good. We would definitely recommend the Ram's Head.

Spent 2 nights here, for B'n'B and had dinner both nights. Evening meal menu was interesting, with twists on familiar dishes, so suited the 80+ year olds, the conventional youth and the adventurers alike in our party. Very grateful to be accommodated at short notice, as a party of 7 too. Loved the "bonhomie" with the MD. Rooms were very comfortable indeed, and breakfast was delicious too, local sausages were excellent.

From the start of booking this was a friendly and efficient affair. Stopped here after a long day at RHS flower show, and exhausting week on holiday in Lynton. Lovely room on the ground floor as I can get wobbly these days (probably the jug of Pimms we had upon arrival).

Service with a smile, prompt & attentive without being pushy. Because of timescale we were only able to visit once, wish we could have returned but there's always a next time.I believe no matter what you order your not going to be disappointed, we certainly weren't. The menu isn't extensive but ample, you know whatever you order is freshly cooked & delicious. I gave 4 star simply because the decor could be improved.

The Rams head is a beautiful Inn, set in a picturesque village. The staff were really welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The dinner was especially fantastic, high restaurant standard, probably the best food we've had in an Inn. Breakfast was also top quality.

We’ve eaten here three or four times during the last couple of year and it’s been fantastic. We booked table for 6.45 last night for a celebratory meal. We arrive a good 15 mins early and were shown to our table in the dining room to the right of the bar. We ordered our drinks and were given menus. Then we were left alone. By 7pm my husband went to the bar ad asked the same chap if we could order food. There was only one other couple in the dining room at the time and they told us they’d been there since 5.30 and only got their starter just after we arrived. As a result of my husband going to the bar, The same guy came to our table and said ‘are you two ready to order now.’ as if he didn’t know! We said we’d been sat waiting to order for some 20 mins. His reply wasn’t with any apology, he just said sternly “we are very busy in the bar”. We asked if our food would take a long time.. his reply was “it’ll be as long as it takes to cook’. We felt very uncomfortable with his rude terse reaction Thankfully our food arrived reasonably quickly and was brought by a pleasant lady. The food was good but we won’t be returning. Shame. Wish we’d gone somewhere else.

We used the online booking system and informed them in the comments section that we are vegan. Our booking was accepted but on arrival were told that there was no vegan or even veggie option so we left. They did offer us a plate of veg but we declined that offer. No apology was offered and we were just told that the information about our booking hadn’t reached them.
