Now called The Grand India. We visited Thirsk for a night and found this place for a fantastic evening meal. The food and service were brilliant. Altogether very enjoyable.

Poor service and worse food . Ordered by phone 1750 arrived 1815. Sat 10 mins before they told me they did not do Sri Lanka. Changed order to vegetable curry along with other items ordered. Sat waiting until 1850. Lime and coriander rice bland and tasteless . Chicken madras palatable . The starter mixed kebab was edible albeit chicken tikka a little dry, the garlic and chili nan was terrible. Dripping in what must be garlic oil. Soggy and over powered with garlic. Over charged by £1.60 according to charges on menu; would not go again!

This restaurant is now called the Grand India . We have now eaten here on a number of occasions and wow the food is excellent. The restaurant offers a remarkable £9.99 4 course special dine in only and cash only on Sundays , Tuesdays and Wednesdays …… you won’t get better value for money anyway Service is excellent with a big shout out to Jav and his team. Poppadoms and pickles to start Any starter then any main (including king prawn dishes) then choice of either rice or bread. Restaurant is busy on these nights so book first I keep going back again and again

Upon arrival we were seated in a cosy corner of the restaurant. The staff were very polite and attentive without being overbearing. The prawn puree starter was so fresh , it was to die for. My wife and I both had the chicken chilli masala which was perfect . This is the best restaurant I have visited in a long long time .

I hadn't been here for 6 years when I had an awful experience. I'd heard it had new owners so me and hubby rang in for a takeaway order last night. We went to collect the takeaway and it was with us within 3 minutes of me arriving. Got home and was really impressed by our starters. My chicken pakora was delicious and there was loads of it. My hubby said his starter was huge as well and he loved it. I had chicken tikka masala and although it was very red it was really nice. hubby had chicken biriyani and he said the curry sauce was a bit watery. The rice and naan breads were very good. It wasn't perfect but it was pretty good and I'd go again but hubby wouldn't have the biriyani.

Grand India is the best Indian I have had from anywhere. Loads of food, hot, tasty, really Grand. I've had some Indians, but not one as nice as this.

I was on holiday for one week and visited Thirsk one evening. We all enjoy Indian food so visited the Raj. As we know this is very tough times with this Pandemic so we were a bit nervous fr eating out. But once inside we found that the staff and premises were taking precautions. The venue although small was clean and fresh. The staff were extremely pleasant and guided us through their meals, some of us are a bit venturous with Indian food so were delighted when we were recommended some dishes we had not tried or even heard on before. I cam say that this experience was fantastic, it was some of the best flavours and tastes outside of India. We were all very pleased to have selected this establishment and highly recommend to all. We enjoyed it so much we went again on our last nigh. I can confirm that our previous experience was just not a one off. Once again the experience was very good. We all agreed that if we are anywhere near Thirsk again we will visit the Raj again. We all enjoyed and recommend you all to try.

Fell short of expectations. Ate in with 4 friends during August. The cleanliness of the restaurant was not up to scratch i.e. there was a food stain on the table cloth when we sat down (see pic), one of the napkins had a stain on it and the radiator next to the table was filthy (see pic). The waiter brought us the wrong starters (destined for the table next to us) and didn't realise until we were half way through; they then gave our starters to the table next to ours... bizarrely they did not knock anything off the bill to compensate. The food tasted good and the staff were friendly but did mess up the order and the cleanliness was extremely poor. Won't re-visit.

Went for a meal here last night, have usually been very impressed with them, but not last night, the place was too busy for the number of staff they had on. It took 30 mins to order and receive drinks, replacement drinks thereafter took just as long., food service was very slow. Hygiene standards were lacking last night, table cloth was stained, the couple next to us received their naan bread with a half eaten one underneath that!

me and my husband visited here on Saturday for dinner, by 11.30pm I had projectile vomiting and diarrhoea, tummy cramps, chills, aching bones, we had to cut our holiday short. Today 2 days on I am still suffering Diarrhoea and tummy cramps, feeling very washed out. I have reported to food standards.

The restaurant is now called the Grand India and we stopped here for a curry and it didn't disappoint! We were the only ones in (booked on a weeknight at 7pm) but that didn't matter. The team were incredibly friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Our waiter was happy to chat to us while we waited for our food - which came very quickly! I had the Sylheti curry with pilau rice and garlic naan - everything was delicious. Others had the lamb tikka masala and chicken saag and both enjoyed their meals as much as me. It was very reasonably priced and if we come back to Thirsk, we will definitely pay them a visit!

The restaurant was not busy as they have just re opened following the lockdown, and while we waited a short time for our meal, they brought us complimentary poppidoms and chutneys. The food was tasty. It was spiced but not only for strength. I tried a fish and prawn curry and my wife had Rogan Josh. Excellent. Service was good and the draught Indian beer was good.

The curry was very tasty me and my boyfriend was very happy. Customer service was excellent would definitely come here again :)

We visited here as a family of four whilst staying at lakeside lodges. We were a bit surprised how empty it was for a Saturday night but the food was fresh and tasty. The service was prompt and the prices were reasonable, so overall very good.

Newly moved here from Kent; I had a lamb madras etc take away last Saturday. The restaurant was packed with a happy hum of satisfied eaters and, despite being busy, takeway customers were served promptly and efficiently. I shall certainly be coming back. Compared with"down south" meals were more reasonably priced and with larger portions. Next time I shall "eat in", but not on a Saturday perhaps. Thanks

We went to the Raj for the first time in a while and was slightly disappointed. We used to go there regularly and the service was always amazing (even when sometimes the food was occasionally less than amazing)... now renamed The Grand India and the food was good this time but the service pitiful. After waiting for table service I ended up going to the desk to pay the bill and ask for them to call a taxi. Only to be told that they didn’t call taxis? Very strange for the service industry and unique in Thirsk as everywhere else we go to does. I think I will give this a swerve in the future and head to the Thai restaurant instead where the food is always amazing and the service is with a smile...

Another great meal at our favourite restaurant. No longer called Raj of India but is now Grand India King Prawn puree followed by lamb tikka biryani = excellence on a plate washed down with chilled Cobra lager

Just enjoyed a fabulous meal at an equally fabulous price. We had 2 popadoms with the biggest pickle tray you've ever seen, mixed platter for 2 to start (which was a meal in itself) then had chicken khari, chicken dopiaza, vegetable rice and a keema nan, 1 pint cobra and a pint of of coke...total £37.Good was amazing, huge portions, delicious, tasty and good quality. The spices were fragrant and delicious without the overpowering chilli sometimes added to 'English Indian' food, possibly the nearest I've enjoyed to actual food eaten in India.

We have been going to the Raj for many years either eating in or having a takeaway, the standard of the meat has always been excellent, however the last few visits to the Grand India we have been left disappointed by the quality of the chicken in particular. We hoped it was a one off by it isn’t, such a shame as all of the sauces are amazing and the naan breads are delicious. Please go back to your old supplier for chicken, it was much nicer!

We came here 2 years ago & it was absolutely beautiful, 2 years later & a change of management had us thinking the worse & to be honest it was..we chose 4 different curry’s between the 4 of us & they were terrible..the nan breads were terrible the curry’s were absolutely horrid, we didn’t complain as I always feel like they are thinking you will get the meal for free, but it’s obvious by the full plates the waiters took away that we never enjoyed the meal. such a shame as 2 years ago it was the best curry house we had visited & believe me we have visited many, we were staying at woodland lodges 2 miles away & next time we stay at woodland lodges in may we will get a Chinese

On working and staying in thirsk I stumbled across this little gem of a restaurant, food was tremendous the staff were very friendly. I enjoyed the meal that much I returned for again the second evening . Recommend and I will be returning on my next thirsk visit after the year .

So nice, lovely staff, tasty food and really good prices :) I always use this Indian for takeaway and sitting in but thought I’d give Henna a go for a change and it was honestly embarrassing how bad it was.. definitely recommend this over the rest!

Have been coming to this restaurant for 16 years have loved it from the start. Friendly staff delicious food.......however have been a few times since it has been taken over and there have been a few issues....but open minded and hoped these would iron out. Recently went and so disappointed. People served before us who came in after us. Then someone asked if we had ordered our drinks...no we hadn’t. Awhile for our poppadoms to arrive. After our meal we wanted some coffee. We had been forgotten about in the back room I am sure as I had to go through and ask the waiters at the bar! Finally someone came and said ‘coffee?’ We said yes please..he then went round the corner on his phone! Finally came out and said ‘coffee?’ So disappointed. A couple of extra notes but can understand these points do change....always had a certain wine that was sold by the glass(nothing special I add) but was told now only sold by the bottle. Was told a few months ago that they were now doing it by the glass again....I ordered it by name and the wrong wine came again. Also The Raj did have a really nice gesture....a small free drink at the end of your meal and your coffee refilled at no extra charge. All charged now on our bill. Changes I do understand but not service!

Go on, give it a go. You won't be disappointed. We've just had a lovely takeaway and plan on having another very soon. Fab!!

We have had several meals and take aways from here since it was taken over and renamed The Grand India. Each meal was really nice and well presented. The service is welcoming and professional. My husband and I share a starter and the restaurant provided another plate with salad which we thought was a nice touch. The currys are flavourful and not full of oil/ghee and the coffee with cream in a glass is my husbands favorite. We highly recommend The Grand India.

Booked the restaurant for work party 20 May. Everything organized beforehand. All we had to do on the night was order the main meal. Starters, pickle trays and all rice pre-planned . Excellent night, lots of good food, beer and the company not bad either! Staff very helpful and worked hard to ensure a good night for all. Really enjoyed a meal at The Grand India with friends. Menu is fantastic, lots to choose from. Food lovely, flavoursome and plenty of it. Service was friendly, attentive, polite and cheerful. Couldn’t fault any of it. Highly recommended.

We have always enjoyed the takeaways from the Raj, last night we ordered knowing that it had changed hands and is now known as ‘Grand India’ The food was delicious, just as good or if not better than before. They were very accommodating and made me a vegetarian dish that wasn’t on the menu. The only thing is, the use of plastic tubs is disappointing in the current plastic crisis we are having- something more environmentally friendly would be good. Other than that, we cant wait to return.

Intended to dine at the local Weatherspoons on one of their Curry-Nights but it was very full, so instead we walked a few hundred yards out of the town centre and called in at The Raj for a "proper" Indian meal. What an absolute delight. Friendly, welcoming staff, pleasant surroundings, a varied menu, and best of all - food to die for. One of the best Indian meals I've ever had. If you're in the Thirsk area, give it a go.

Very nice food. We had the South Indian garlic chicken tikka which was delicious. We asked for madras hot and it wasn't, but the chicken was lovely and moist. The cauliflower bhaji side dish was done very al dente, but we like it like that. The chilli rice and the mushroom rice were both very good, although again, not much heat in the chillies. Lovely Syrah wine too. It's a busy restaurant and deservedly so. Would definitely return when next in the area.

Recently changed management 2 weeks ago. Will have new name Grand India. New menu, new staff. Food was very good. Staff polite and friendly, seemed enthusiastic, keen to impress and efficient. Service was timely. Recommend booking to avoid disappointment. Ate in, not tried take away yet.

I love the Raj. The food is reliably fantastic. For this lunch we had poppadoms and pickle tray, mixed starter, a main with nan or rice and coffee. The staff are very kind to my son (4) and always try and get him laughing. I would recommend a meal here at any time of day!!

I had a splendid evening here last week with some friends. We come here quite regularly and the food is always excellent. I had the chicken ??? which was superb. My friends had tandoori chicken, chicken dopiaz (both amazing) and a prawn dish which was apparently delicious. My favourite was probably the aubergine bhaj - absolutely scrumptious. The decor is nice - the right mix of Indian and modern - and the staff are absolutely charming. We will certainly be going back!

I never thought I could find a place that matched my old home town indian food but this place topped it. I've never had such a filling tasteful curry before. The atmosphere is beautiful and the service you can't beat they are heart warming and so welcoming. Defiantly try the vegetable curry I'm not a veggie but it's is by far the best! It's a must xxx

We have been going to The Raj for over 25 years and this is still the one to judge all others by. On our travels we very ocassionally find Indian food as good but very rarely any better - and right on our doorstep !! The food is always superb and the staff very courteous, helpful & friendly. As for the Sunday lunch menu, this is at an unbelievable price and we cannot believe people seem to be unaware of what they are missing out on and at such fantastic value for money. We highly recommend The Raj to all Indian food lovers, locals and visitors alike.

Trying to find a meal in Thirsk after 8.30 on a November evening was proving difficult so thought we would compromise with this unassuming looking place. What a gem we found, the place was was not busy, often a bad sign, but the staff were attentive and informative. The food proved to be excellent, full of fresh spice and distinct flavours. We readily shared each other's selection and drew comparisons with a few select places that we had visited previously.. Worth a visit and we shall be going back!!!

Thank you for catering with cheer and good humour to a group of 11 children and teenagers. The food was really good as usual and there was plenty of room for everyone. The only thing was that service was quite slow - we only ordered main courses and sides, but having arrived at 6:30pm, by 8:05pm we decided that we weren't going to have time to order dessert as well, and bought ice-creams from Tesco on the way back home instead.

I visited the Raj of India recently with a friend for a meal. The staff were attentive and friendly and they couldn't do enough for us. The food was amazing: very tasty, very generous portions and definitely great value for money. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a meal and will be returning very soon.

fantastic hot food - small portions which were actually perfect size BUT they were as expensive or dearer than many other Indians where portions are bigger. Best sag aloo in a long time but only 4 pieces of potato??Pickle tray with poppadoms wasn’t clean, is it cleaned between customers. Yogurt sauce and mango chutney were runny like water. Coke totally flat - bottle left open too long? Beer excellent. Sadly same thoughts as everyone re staff - monosyllabic, no smiles, rushed us to order, made me feel like I should be ordering more, barely friendly etc. £37 for 2 people and only 1 beer feels a lot. Massive staff improvement needed.

Myself and a friend were staying in Thirsk and enjoyed a lovely evening at the Raj. Service was friendly and efficient- one slight mistake was made with our order but was quickly rectified. The food was very tasty and we enjoyed a 3 course meal with drinks for £45 which was extremely good value. Well worth a visit.

We arrived to find out they didn't know we had a table reservation. They said they don't take online bookings! However, they did fit us in, but the process was confusing and we felt uncomfortable. We have been before and always enjoyed the experience, hence the higher rating than this visit deserved. Don't book this restaurant via Opentable.

My wife called up to order a take away and was confronted with an extremely rude man who spoke to her like dirt. I heard the conversation as she was on loud speaker so went to pick up the takeaway and voiced my concerns. They were apologetic so I just forgot about. A few weeks later I called up to order and had no problems, apart from the order being slightly wrong. Whatever didn’t care. The other night my partner called up for a takeaway while I was out. She asked if they delivered. The man on the phone laughed and said were too busy for that and hung up on her! The people that work here are clearly SEXIST PIGS and I would never order from here again. Try henna in thirsk centre they are lovely and friendly, and make amazing food! everything you want from an Indian takeaway.

Friendly atmosphere, and excellent staff. Food is always delicious, from starter to dessert. Is a regular restaurant for me and my partner, as we know we will always enjoy the meal, be looked after well and is well priced!Excellent restaurant would thoroughly recommend!

Just returned from a visit to the Raj in Thirsk. We had the banquet menu and thought it was excellent value for money. The poppadoms with dips were really fresh and tasty as was my starter of mini kebab. My husband had chicken tikka. For main course we had a chicken masala, and a chicken balti. These were served with vegetable rice and a naan bread which we shared. The meal ended with a very nice ice cream. For £9.99 per person we felt it was excellent value for a midweek treat. The owner was vey friendly and don't be put off by the negative reviews of the staff. We think it is a language barrier and the ones who have good English were very pleasant and helpful.

Always fantastic food and the service is excellent. Definitely the best Indian in North Yorkshire, and very good value for money.

First of all, the web site allows you to make a reservation for 530pm but when we got there the lights were off and door locked. Had to sit in the car for 1/2 hour and log back on to make a 6pm reservation. The staff are extremely rude! When we walked in the guy said SIT! We almost walked out right there. We were approached immediately by another waiter who didn't say hello .... smile or anything . In all we had 3 different servers. When we ordered we had to say what we wanted at least 2 times ... with the drinks and the food. They don't seem to understand very well. We were never asked if we wanted another drink and they tried to take the food off the table before we were even done. It was very uncomfortable being felt to be rushed out. The food was good but we will never go back again ... and we live less than 5 miles from it. Don't go to this restaurant unless you don't mind being treated like you're putting them out by eating there. They do takeaway thou, so since the food is pretty good that would be the only option to go back for us, if absolutely necessary. Busby stoop Indian is wayyyyy better.

Fed up with making the 12 mile round trip to this takeaway to find that they have packed up the order and sent us on our way only to find the order wrong yet again. Not just one item this time but 3 items wrong and 1 missing. The last 3 takeaways have been incorrect which makes you wonder what on earth is going on in their kitchen.....good thing there's another Indian in town!

Unfortunately, despite excellent food, the service in this restaurant was unbelievably poor. Staff totally disinterested in customers and so slow to serve food. Despite this we may try takeaway in future but if as slow will abandon totally! Note to management - Shake up your unpleasant and inefficient staff!

We took our two kids out for a mid week treat. Hubby and I had the Wednesday banquet which was gorgeous and not overwhelming. We knew the kids (4 and 7 ) would not eat mucch so they were able to share a banquet. We had chips for them too and they are loads each! The servers are attentive and are all very friendly. We will most definitely be back.

Since moving to Thirsk this is now my regular place to go eat. Food has always been spot on . Alway get what I ask for . The dishes are great. Place is clean and inviting and the staff are very helpful and friendly. We love this place .We come as a couple and have also brought friends and family.

Lovely Food, Waiting staff need to learn to smile all 4 of us choose to have the banquet menu,which was really lovely food although we felt somewhat rushed on each course by the staff. Think I may of seen one of them smile although I'm not certain, If this is how they are with all customers it would put me off returning

Me and my husband have recently moved to Yorkshire. And wanted to try an Indian. So did so on a Wednesday night, the banquet meal. It was lovely. Really nice food. So filling! The staff were friendly and said anything we needed they would get. Thank you.

Hi my first visit to the raj of India will be my last we nearly walked out the unfriendly and rude waiter tried to force us to sit near a large family when the restaurant was empty.The food was nothing special .The waiters had a habit of removing dishes during the meal instead of wating till everyone had finished it was a very poor dinning experience I could not recommend.

Food here is always beautiful me and my husband come here regulary the atomphere is so nice the staff are very lovely and friendly and always there if you want help with the food menu and dishes . The service is realy good same as the food. Thank you raj of india we love your restaurant!

After reading other reviews we chose to eat here on our recent visit to ThirskThe food was generally just adequate. Paper table cloths and napkins are to me always unattractive. Furthermore we found the staff unattentive and less than friendly.Overall it is ok for the price but personally not for me.

Called in for a sit down meal. The waiters are completely indifferent to customers being there and you wouldn't guess their livelihoods depend on them eating there. There may well be a small language barrier sometimes but that is no excuse for lack of a warm, friendly welcome followed afterwards by a 'thank you' of some description.. On another note the food is also not what it used to be, putting reheated food onto a hot iron plate and making it bubble does not make it fresh again.

My first experience at The Raj of India was an extremely pleasant one. The staff were very accommodating with our large group, efficient with their service and last but certainly not least the food was fantastic!!!Highly recommend!!

We went last night for a meal for my birthday, staff seated us straight away and brought poppadoms for us to nibble at while we perused the menu. Food and drinks came quickly and staff were attentive. Been using the Raj for 27 years now and the food never disappoints, absolutely delicious, thank you! We had 3mains, 3 side dishes, 2 rice, 2 naan breads, 4 poppadoms and 5drinks between 4 of us which worked out less than £16 a head, and still couldn't quite finish it all, very good value for money.

After not visiting Thirsk for while a curry at the Raj was a must. I have to say that they did not disappoint the food was fantastic and the portion sizes were very generous. Only down side was that the staff seemed to rush through everything, seemed very keen to get us oit of the door.

Found myself at a bit of a loose end so went for a last minute family meal. We normally opt for take away but decided to sit in instead. Service was really good and everyone was very kind and helpful and food was really good as well. Will be back again soon

went for a Wednesday night banquet for less than a tenner. Food was more than expected, flavoursome, plenty, tasted great and five courses for less than a tenner, fabulous, just wish we had tried it before as we go home tomorrow......recommend for anyone to give it a try......but book up as it got full in half an hour

Used this takeaway and restaurant for 12years and it never disappoints. Food is of outstanding quality, staff are always friendly and attentive, and it's always busy which shows it's not just me that thinks like this.

6 of us came for my mums birthday and it was 5*. Food was delicious, service was really good and the staff were very friendly. We will definitely be coming back!

The food at the Raj was outstanding and the portion size is very good. However the only let down was the service, the waiters are quite rude and they seem to rush you when you are choosing the food. They are also very keen to bring the bill and get you out of the door once you have finished eating. Excellent food in quiet and comfortable surroundings. Good value for money and a warm welcome.

We have been going to this restaurant since it opened over 20 years ago and love it, however we went last week with our family and to the beginning it was as it had always been.The Boss came in and spoke to us and as usual the food was excellent.Later on he left and there were two newish waiters left and I am sorry to say they could not get rid of us quick enough.They obviously wanted to close up yet it was only around 10 pm.Very sad and disappointed cos after all these years we now question wether we will ever go back
