The Railway in East Devon

We dropped in on the off chance based on the reviews that we’d read. I had tried to call to book a table but got no reply from either number. We didn’t feel at all welcome when we did drop in and didn’t bother staying for food. Won’t be visiting again.

Warning pub has completely changed from the lovely restaurant it used to be! If you want to come in for a drink it’s fine, however their website still advertises the same menu as previously. Misleading !

We can only comment on the breakfast food as we were booked in for B & B. Cooked breakfast was alright, but unfortunately, we were joined by persistent flies. Next day we opted for continental which was a disappointment. We didn't expect cheapest yoghurts from a budget supermarket, nut-less, fruitless floury muesli (other cereals were available though) and thick sliced white toast with only butter (hardly continental). Fruit had been mentioned the previous day but didn't appear. We did get some marmalade though, after asking for it. Service wasn't great. On two occasions our host was late for our agreed breakfast time. On our last day she knew we needed to eat by 9am sharp as we had to leave by a given time, but we could not get access to the breakfast area as the door was locked. Despite us trying unsuccessfully to phone her, she didn't surface until after 9.20, by which time we had decided to leave without having eaten! Apparently, The Railway website has been inherited from the previous owners and mostly has not been up-dated, so much of the content is now misleading. There are other issues, but this review is only about the food

Friendly staff, music was good, nice outside seating area, a good all round local pub.

Very chavy pub with people loitering outside smoking, shouting and staring at everyone who walks into the pub. Had a very rowdy feel so we just left rather than stay but one thing is for sure the pictures and other reviews were before the current owners and the place is nothing like the reviews or pictures. Hopefully people click most recent reviews before going here.

Aww what has happened to this pub/restaurant?? they had an amazing chief and the food was just fantastic, They really did stand out from the rest. Now sadly just another sky sports pub, we turned up on our anniversary and it was completely different. There were different menus at the bar and then the staff said oh we don't do food really on a Friday night, just chips. I said I saw a sign up for a burger and chips. Then oh we could do that too!! So we left and went else where for our anniversary. A massive shame and the staff really need to update their website as it's still advertising the old menu and the old owner and what the pub used to offer. Gutting won't be returning unless it changes back. Sad thing is other pubs in town do food on a Friday night!

Fabulous Easter Sunday Carvery. Stacey and her team provided excellent service for a family of carnivores and a vegan, plus a child with a serious dairy allergy. Everything was checked so no cross contamination. The food was excellent - hot and flavoursome. Good portions and well priced. Brilliant attentive service. Highly recommend.

A friend recommended that we try this excellent tucked away restaurant, and we are so glad we did! The staff were friendly and attentive. The menu had something for all tastes. Three of us chose steak from the specials board, all wanting theirs cooked differently, and they all came out exactly as requested! 😀 All our starters and mains were delicious. As the meal was a birthday celebration for this writer, we were presented with a surprise huge, and tasty birthday cake with candles !! Definitely good value for money too!!

Food was fantastic, unfortunately the service was non existent and so was the staff. My wife's rice pudding was off and waited 35 mins before we could draw attention to a member of staff. Then we waited for our bill and in the end gave up waiting and payed at the bar.

Fabulous meal, delicious food and lovely service. The vegan wellington and accompanying vegetables was really flavoursome, one of the nicest meals out for a while, served nice and hot too. Delicious vegan sticky toffee pudding and custard to follow. Husband enjoyed his fish and chips, good portion, soft haddock in crispy batter on a bed of chunky chips. Followed by a rich chocolate cheesecake, which was thoroughly enjoyed too.

We visited this pub/restaurant last night after having been there a couple if times before and really enjoyed. We knew it had changed hands but were still expecting it to be good. Unfortunately we were very wrong! My husband had booked over a week ago, and had called during the day to confirm the booking. However when we turned up they did not have us written in the book! they were able to seat us but had to make up a table etc. My husband asked about real ales, and was told they only had one IPA on, because the other beers had "not been delivered" We asked to order when the waitress bought out our drinks and she told us she would just get a pen, after 5 mins and no sign of her returning, my husband got up to ask and we were told she was busy taking another order and would come to us after. Starter was served to us and was good, however the main course was a bit of a disaster! I had the Pork Belly which looked lovely on the plate however as i ate though the pork, although the outside was hot it was cold in the middle! Cold pork fat is not the tasiest thing to eat! It completly put me off eating and i left most of the meal. My husband had the curry and he did enjoy that. When the wautress cleared the plates, i told her how bad mine had been and she aplogised. Another lady (maybe the owner or manger) came over with the bill and also aplogised, she blamed the young waitress for not checking on us after we had recived our main courses and but she had removed the cost of of the meal from the bill which was good. The new owners need to improve both service and food quality if they want to keep their customers returning.

Cracking place, once found! Tasty, quality fare, reasonably priced and beautifully presented. Worth seeking out if in the area.

Lovely place, delicious food. Our friends live in Dunkerswell and had spotted this place as being highly recommended. We had a warm welcome with drinks before our meal (real ale). At our table we ordered Hake with a Lobster Bisque, Steak and Belly Pork followed by a Cheese Board, Bakewell Tart and Eaton Mess. Before our order came the Chef sent over some Olives and Warm Bread which was well received and a nice touch. Everything we had was delicious and well presented, we cleaned our plates. I did have an issue with the Samphire in my Hake dish which was woody, a real pity because the dish was packed with lovely flavours. The venue is stylish and comfortable. Overall, a top job, just a pity about the minor detail of the Samphire.

Went totally The Railway for a family lunch with my 5 children when it reopened under ew management. Very welcoming staff, very organised and polite. Atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable. Food was delicious and all plates were empty at the end. The staff was very good with my children and all our needs were catered for. Nothing was too much trouble. Can't wait to visit again. Highly recommend

The Railway is under new management. The food and presentation is amazing. For its price, it is worth a visit. The chef gives the food a very stylish continental feel, the quantity and quality is superb. My colleagues are very particular with their dietary needs, the staff catered to their request. We all agreed, we will be back.

Drove 15 miles to take my mum to The Railway Inn for her birthday after hearing such good reviews from different people and it did not disappoint. The food was absolutely amazing. I will definitely be returning and recommending it to others.

We took my mother on law here for her 95th. We hadn't visited the pub since we left the town 16 years ago. Since Angie sold it, its changed hands a few times. Had an extension built and generally tarted up. We were very impressed...

Very nice roast, really good meat and veg, but could do with more gravy (a fair amount more). Inches on top was ideal, will be better once real ale on tap as well.

We had 7 Sunday Roasts. All were delicious, beautiful meat and huge Yorkshire puddings. The accompanying vegetables were the stars of the meal, all were crisp and perfectly cooked, there was a cauliflower cheese too which was amazing. The portions were very generous and the staff happily gave us extra hot gravy when requested. They did children's portions (half the adult amount and half the price). They had one vegetarian Sunday meal and one fish meal. The grilled mackerel was delicious.

Used to love this place under the previous owners as their calzones and changing menu was awesome. Decided to try it out now with some work colleagues and went along for the tapas evening and the food and service was still fantastic. Tapas dishes came at a sensible pace, not rushed, and were lovely and good selection. Will be back to try it the "normal" menu at some point!

Paul Greenhead (chef/owner) works really hard producing delicious food. Strongly recommended. You are guaranteed to find excellent food to suit all tastes.

We walked in close to 9pm & they were busy, but the chef was happy to find a table for two for us. And boy were we pleased he did. Our meals (the lambs liver & the bream, followed by bread & butter pud & cheese & biscuits) were fabulous, I kid you not. With excellent service, a buzzing atmosphere, great beer, cider & decent prices, the Railway should be high on anyone's list for quality meal out.

We were met on arrival, shown to our room. Room had all our needs. Comfortable, clean. It seems very popular with local s,big parties booked lunchtime and evening. Hosts very accommodating. We would definitely book again.

Fantastic local with great food. A bit hard to find, but well worth the effort.

It was quiz night at the Railway, so went early to eat beforehand. The food was very good, The batter on the calamari was so light and did not over shadow the delicacy of the fish. I had pork belly for main meal which was served on a delicious apple and potato cushion. The quiz was quite tough, but a challenge doesn't hurt anybody!. Expensive for a very small room. Dated and tatty furniture... not shabby chic, just shabby. Waitress had no knowledge of breakfast options (as I don't eat pork) and I had to ask her twice to find out. Asked for my breakfast in my room. I was told that not an option, however it was brought to my room the next morning after all, for which I was grateful. Still, not worth the money.

The fish and chips we had weren't up to standard for the price. We thought it would be fresh fish but it wasn't and it was very small for the price. The chips were frozen and no peas. Wouldn't go there to eat again.

Love it. Clean, cozy and comfortable room. I was impressed with the shower pressure and enjoyed very much(there are 4*hotels that don't have that quality in the showers) The service was perfect, I have never had lack of milk, teas or coffee in my room. Love it

It's great to be able to eat at the Railway again now lockdown has ended. Really good choice including vegan options. Beautifully presented plates of food, very tasty. We'll be along again soon.

What an amazing find tucked off the back of the high street. Great welcome by the staff who looked after the four of us superbly. Food was fantastic across the board and good value for money. As our usual haunts are full with summer visitors we are visiting as yet untried Local Restaurants. Located in the twisting back streets of Honiton, The Railway has a small Car-park at the rear, but its best to make the short walk there from the New Street Car-park, which is free after 6pm. On arrival we waited 12 minutes for our drinks, we were then told that we could see a Menu in about five minutes as they were very busy (though actually they were less than half full.) Our warmed Onion and Rosemary Focaccia starter/nibble was delicious, as was our Caramelised Apple Tart with Cream desert, flavoursome but insubstantial. Disappointingly our Mains were destinctly "Value Range" and rather underwhelming. My Tagliatelle Carbonara had a bland thin sauce supporting some tiny pieces of meat and my Wife's Pan Roasted Chicken Supreme offered small & lonely pieces of leek & beans and a few minute sautéed potatoes. She found no evidence of the promised Lemon and Rosemary crumb. The Tribute beer was well kept. The Restaurant's atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant, and our Servers welcoming and attentive. You won't be surprised to learn that our Capachinos arrived without chocolate powder, mints or biscotti! To best experience The Railway eat first, as unless you have a very small appetite you are likely to remain hungry. If very average food in tiny portions served on huge plates is your thing, enjoy!

Had a takeaway pizza last month which was dry, flavourless and tiny. Went back to the railway last weekend and had a starter and main which was, again, very disappointing and was style over substance. A real shame as I used to love this place!

Came for an early dinner, there is a small car park at the rear. The steak (Bistecca Di Manzo) was absolutely fantastic. It's the best steak I have had in the UK for a long, long time. Good selection of beers as well - I would highly recommend the Railway. Staff also extremely friendly.

Had in laws staying so went for the second time in six months. We had huge portions of delicious, hot grub- fresh seafood pasta, steaks, fresh fish served with yummy potatoes and veg. Lovely desserts. A couple of bottles of decent wine. (The champagne was really rough, don't bother).The margarita pizza we ordered for my young sons was pretty unappetising, bit burnt and tasteless. Not sure what was missing. The staff are really lovely. I think maybe it needs to decide if it's a pub or a restaurant. If it's a pizzeria or what? (Please don't do this, your pizzas are not your strong point). Bit more atmosphere needed I think.
