Very friendly staff. Good food. Not so keen on the music a bit young for us. The desert was fabulous Toffee and Honeycomb cheese cake. The Shiraz wine was also very good. Good service from DaisyT

Staying in Brightlingsea for a few days, this red-brick throwback to Victorian times built to cash in on a railway line that was shut down even longer ago than England's 1966 win is still plugging away. It looks a bit gloomy from the outside but it's been tastefully done out with a covered garden area to let you make the most of the sea (or estuary) air. Serves a decent pint of local beer but everyone else around me was sticking to the lager in proper Essex fashion.

Ventured in to the Railway Friday evening for a couple of pints, before picking up a takeaway from the local chinese, and really glad we did. We were welcomed by Cooper the Labrador who I must say is the consummate host and a pleasure to have in your company. Great staff, and in the current climate I take my hat off to them. I look forward to returning there after lockdown, sitting in front of that lovely warm open fire, passing conversation with Cooper. Would absolutely recommend this lovely little pub!! Thanks for the warm welcome!!!

Stopped by for a quick pint, the barmaid was very friendly and promptly filled our glasses with tasty ales. It was a busy night, they do have a nice patio area.

Well worth a visit, all you can want in a real pub, good real ales and ciders! New owners Sarah and Alex have done and are still doing so much to make it the welcoming hostelry it always has been and will be! Good luck to them both and their families who will grow up there!

My hubby and I decided to have a pub crawl around Brightlingsea, as there are several pubs that we'd not visited before. The Railway was the second pub on our list. We intended to stay for one drink and move on, but actually ended up staying for 4 drinks, 2 games of pool (free!) and a bit of reading in the book corner (hardcore on a Friday night!). This pub is set in the old station house, as the name suggests, and still contains loads of the original features, including signage for the ticket office, information posters and beautiful furniture. The pub has a separate pool room, which also has a stage for live music. The main bar room has an area with a bookshelf, beside the fireplace, and is lovely and cosy, and on Wednesdays there is a book meet. Patrons are encouraged to borrow a book, read it and write a short review, pop it in the book and return it for the next person. I found a book that took my fancy and began reading it there and then. The drinks are very reasonably priced, and a great selection. There seemed to be a real variety of people in the pub, which is a good sign that it appeals to everyone. Cooper the dog is a lovely boy, who says hello to everyone, and enjoys a fuss. We'll definitely be back as we've discovered a real gem in The Railway. Thanks to Sarah, the landlady, and the barmaid, who's name I didn't get, for the welcome.

Recently taken over by dynamic lady - improvements eg garden, but still a haven for people who like a pint. No food, but you can get takeaways very near. So friendly you almost can't avoid joining in with the chatter Hope she makes it pay GO there!

Well worth a visit and a pint. Quite an alternative and mixed clientele, but some great beers and welcoming staff, and locals. Just wish I had seen the complimentary smoked eel and bread before I was leaving.

I'd just moved to the area and this place caught my eye as it looked a bit unusual. At first I thought I might have walked into a pub from 'Withnail and I' but I soon realised it had a charm that is hard to find nowadays. There's nothing fake, chavvy, beer-boy, poncey or hipster about this place, but nor is it a tweed cap and barbour jacket pretend-gentry pub either. You won't find canned music, fizzy lager, fruit machines, TVs, or gastro-anything. The good real ale and cider is made on the premises, there's a big fire and a cat...I am old enough (just) to remember when this was what most country pubs were like so it's good to see they still exist. Best of all I got a friendly welcome and ended up staying chatting to the barman and his friend until closing time, after having intended just to have a quick drink.

What a pub, Star Wars bar in the making, such nice people who love real ale, look out for the Wifi password 😂 come and sit out the front and people watch, the local cat has its own seat.

I called in here at the end of a dog walk with my two lurchers. People on both sides of the bar were brilliantly welcoming. Really well kept beer in a pub where you actually just go for a drink and not a three course meal like most pubs these days. Well done.

An acquired taste for some but a real step back in time where the beer and conversation were important. A lack of plastic and electronics make it a refuge. The May Day weekend cider festival is a must, watch out for the season ticket holders.

I understand that this is recently under new management. I called in for a quick half and ended up staying for over an hour. No children, no juke box, no television, no flashy interior, no Wifi and best of all no alcopops. This is a traditional pub where enjoying a good beer (or cider) and having a chat are the main aim. They achieve it and good luck to them. Looking forward to the Brightlingsea festival 28th April to 2nd May with the Vibrators there on Sunday night. Note they do not do food!

Proper pub with proper drinks, a bit dirty but at least it is what it is, not overpriced. Good company

Always go here for coffee and a bite to eat in Connaught Av . The Flat white is always a double shot and the food is good and freshly prepared.

We heard they did a good Sunday roast, so decided to give them a try. Glad we did. The roast was fantastic. Proper home cooked food and not the precooked and reheated stuff a lot of the big chains serve up. We opted for the roast beef and the extra of cauliflower cheese with leaks and bacon and I highly recommend you try that as it was superb. Big thick slices of tender beef and nice roasties and an impressive range of veggies which consisted of parsnips, carrots, broccoli, swede and peas! Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Best roast dinner i've had in apub for a very long time. We look forward to going back!

The coffee was nice. The prices were reasonable. The cakes looked nice and homemade but the buttercream was made with margerine and that flavour was foul. We all scraped the icing off our cake and just ate the sponge because we hadn't had lunch.

I’d avoid attending just before closing as you’ll be accused of being a school parent and viciously ushered away. Seriously lacking in customer service. Rude, Rude, Rude!
