Went in for a couple of drinks, great atmosphere and pleasantly surprised by good selection of beers.

Absolutely lovely, beautiful, friendly managers. I always measure a pub by the toilets these are 5* soo clean!! I am new to this place as my daughter lives in Newport- superb place. On a visit to see family who live in Newport we popped in here for a few pints, what a great little pub! The atmosphere is relaxed and the choice of beers is amazing, its nice to find an old fashioned pub that focus on the drinks rather than food. You can get a little snack as cobs and crisps are sold but nothing more. This place is a must visit while in Newport.

If you want a bit of history about Newport, there are photos of how it used to look like years ago. Staff are friendly, toilets are on site, the tables are very clean.

Beer always well served (every time we have visited), prices clearly displayed on a TV screen. Refurbished decor and plenty of real ale options available.

Lovely range of Black Country brewery cask ales and ciders including mild and sloe cider! The cheese, onion and black pudding cobs were delicious, well worth a try. Dog friendly with blankets, toys, treats and water bowls.

Good selection of cold snacks, love the blackpudding, cheese & onion Cob washed down with a great selection of Ales. All served with a Smile!

The new landlord here is brilliant and really friendly. Very welcoming and can't do enough for you. As well as that there is a great choice of beer and cider. The best pub in Newport by far.

This is now my local. Having been coming to Newport for over six years now I recently moved here. Pretty much on every visit I’d end up in The Tav with friends because it’s a proper pub that does proper beer. There’s also some decent music too. Dean and Rachel are the consummate hosts. And bloody good they are at it. The best pub in Newport by a country mile. 10/10

I live in Newport and over the years I have visited all the pubs in the area at one time or another. Without exception The Railway Tavern (The Tav), is the best in the area. The bar is part of the Black Country Ales stable and always has a large selection of ales and ciders in great condition and on tap. The management, Dean and Rachel, are friendly, helpful and fully committed to giving their customers a friendly welcome, a decent pint in a clean, comfortable and modern pub. I can honestly say you feel more like a member of their family than a customer. If you’re in the area don’t miss the opportunity to pop in, I guarantee you Rachel and Dean will give you a warm welcome.

The best pub in Newport by far. Dean and Rach are the most welcoming people you could come across. You are always promised a friendly reception and a relaxed comfortable atmosphere in The Tav. The fires are roaring in the winter and the roof terrace is heaving in the summer. You really can’t go wrong for an incredible local pub offering the best ales, ciders and cobs in town! And bingo night on a Thursday is always buzzing! Really couldn’t recommend a visit more. Top of the shop!

We stopped in here for a quick drink while out walking in the area with family. What a find! Recently refurbished and with a new landlord and landlady they have turned this pub around. A very welcoming atmosphere and with lots of real ales available this is a proper drinking pub. The only food available are cobs, scotch eggs or pork pie from the bar. A note must be given about the toilets as they are immaculate and with a few toiletries and items for the ladies available to help yourself this is a great touch.

What can I say, second time in this pub and had an amazing time with landlords and locals alike. Asked to join their quiz team so I could socialise. With only 2nd visit Dean remembered me, a great asset for a landlord and made me feel welcome. If your in the area make sure you don’t miss this gem.

Absolutely beautiful pub. Friendly and welcoming, always time for a chat from the staff and managers. Absolutely spotless and very very clean. Sounds daft but, its a pleasure to use the loo and they are immaculate!!, unlike some places. Keep up the good work and see you all again soon!

OMG! This pub is so lovely now. Perfect for everyone! This couple (whoever they are) have turned this place around! It was a doss hole before. I went with my husband, mom and Dad and daughter the other day and couldn't believe the change! They have so many ales on tap and everywhere is just so lovely. The women's toilet blew my mind with the care that had been put into making sure there were the essentials there! I have never experienced that in a pub before! They don't do food! The music was amazing and I could go on........

I love the BCA pubs and have frequented many so was pleased to spot this place while visiting Newport. On entering we were greeted warmly and advised on the beers available which is the norm in BCA pubs. However, the longer we stayed it became apparent that this was different to other ones I have visited. The guys standing at the bar were loud and shouting across the pub....although it was friendly banter it could have made people feel uncomfortable. On this occasion I was with friends but I do enjoy visiting a pub in my own at times to sit with my book and a quiet pint.....as a woman I would not have felt comfortable in this establishment sitting on my own which is a shame.

Love black country ales. Have visited a few. Really pleased to find this in Newport. Positives friendly welcome, warm and clean. Good selection of ales and allowed to sample. Negatives , visited in early afternoon, several males bar hanging and "steaming" didn't feel comfortable, bar man loud shouting about football across the room to others watching the TV. Overall good beers but maybe the clientel will.let it down,believe this hadn't been open long and a mother close pub being refurbished so customers have decamped. Nice to have a real.pub but maybe caution needs tobe exercised to keep it in the tradition of black country ales

Good selection of Black Country beers...visited on a quiet Monday night so plenty of room...background music not obtrusive...landlord seems like a good guy!

I like popping in here now and then. I am always made welcome by Dean and Rachel as if I was only there the day before. A clean and tidy place with clientele to match. It’s a real ale pub with a good selection of beers etc. It does what it says on the tin.

Since Dean took over this pub is the place to be. The new decor is comfort with style, the staff are the friendliest you'll find anywhere, and the Landlord knows virtually everyone by name. The beer is always well kept and a wide variety. On top of that the food is excellent....the best Cheese Cobs ever!

We had been waiting to visit The Railway Tavern since before lockdown - with the lifting of the restrictions I drove from Brighton to visit my best friend in Newport. I was only there for the weekend but each evening we wandered down the road...

I'm sure it's fine for food and coffees but not really a traditional pub.

Recently refurbished pub, they have done it really well, plenty of real ales to choose from with big screens with info on them, good selection of other draught and spirits though too! Friendly staff, very cosy atmosphere, will definitely be returning

My wife and I visited The Railway Tavern on Thursday 20 August . It reopened with new owners on the day before ( Wednesday 19 August 2020) with 6 real ales and a real cider on the handpumps. Customers have to enter by the front door on Upper Bar and leave by the rear door on Avenue Road. Once you have entered there is a signing in table where you leave contact details on a small form for tracing and some hand gel. The bar staff take your order at the table and bring the order to you. The staff were busy but still find time to spend time to speak to customers. The tables are well spaced out with a variety of low and high seated tables.

Staff are always really friendly, but on a really busy night they struggle (could do with an extra pair of hands I think). Good selection of drinks and often there is music on (either live or a DJ)

If you like Northern sole it's great and the drink are pretty cheap four pints £11 pound

BRILLAINT local always a joy. Great prices a good pint. Music and bands.

Live music Friday night, decent prices, vinyl playing DJ Saturday, northern soul and Scooter you tube videos, what's not too like . My mate said the Guinness didn't seem as good as others he had on the same night elsewhere but the Doom Bar and Golden Glow were ok.

We'd heard about the pub having a 'scooter, northern soul' theme, and eventually got around to popping in. Was pleasantly surprised to find out that the landlord is an old friend who used to be involved with the scooter scene in Telford. We had a good catch up with each other. The pub is tasteful and comfortable. The drinks prices are very competitive too. We'll definitely be returning.

Expensive staff miserable poor

Very friendly staff, good atmosphere and a nice open layout with a recently refurbished look. My band enjoyed the gig and look forward to playing the venue again.

There is no longer sports there, even the pool table and darts have gone. The music is too loud, you're having to shout to hear each other. It's meant to be a pub not a club. There's no themed music nights, just the same music playing, and the duke box has gone so customers can't even choose what is being played... just not my kind of pub anymore
