Excellent. The food was great and unlike lots of other places, didn't look like it came straight out of a packet. Very tasty and well presented. Prices of beer and grub were exceptional too, especially for somewhere in the City Centre. The Punch also offers a two for one deal, which is ideal if you're on a tight budget and you're looking for somewhere that offers good friendly and speedy service. We ate outside but If you can get a table, I would suggest eating indoors, as there is lots of road noise and general racket from Queen Victoria Square. Don't let this put you off visiting. I'm certain that you won't be disappointed.

Lovely building basic & traditional pub which we liked surprisingly. staff accommodating. Price good for 2 people having a meal we are visitors this was the best value hot meal we have had in hull 🙂♥️👍

Food was awful, I’ve had better in Wetherspoons for half the price. It was all tasteless and bland. The steak was horrendous. Parents had the pie and said it wasn’t bad. Even the coleslaw was tasteless.

Called with a group at 10pm on 16th March after an event at City hall. It was really busy but the staff served quickly. At 10.25pm the doorman came round & asked everyone to drink up as they were closing early & gave no explanation. With pubs struggling since the pandemic I find it bizarre. Wont rush back

Normally I love this pub but met up with my friend for a catch up and after two drinks was asked to leave because they are closing because of the darts team wtf there was only five people in the pub at this point and it was only 6.15pm - won’t be visiting again 🤨

We have been as a family on many occasion to this place and the food has always been great. Unfortunately over the last few months this hasn’t been the case, either the cooks/chef has changed or the supplier has, or dare I say they have just lost interest in doing a good job because the food has completely gone down hill. The quality on some if not all of the menu has completely dropped. On the upside the bar and bar staff are absolutely marvellous.

Whats happened to the customer is always right ! Seriously need some mature staff with lbetter attitude and more brains when I ask for 2 half's of cider that's what I expect not a pint . Then get a lot of attitude of a stupid girl yes girl sorry use to love the pub but your staff need a lesson in manners.

Come in for some dinner and tret the mother. Well I was very disappointed. It was very expensive £39 for a lasagna with garlic bread which was all cheese than pasta or meat. We also got a chilli with rice. With two carlings. The food took ages to come and then when it did come was cold. Also the pub was very quite, so dont understand why the wait. The food was also very tasteless. The staff was more bothered about talking to each pther then serving customers. This place has gone down hill its nothing like it use to be. Will not be returning after 10 years of coming here. Gutted! Avoid!!!

Cosy,friendly pub,went with husband and granddaughter for lunch, ribeye steak was cooked perfectly,medium rare,and granddaughters chicken strips lovely, busy but that's good, definitely going back 😋 👌

We popped in for lunch,my grandson and I had homemade burgers,chips and homemade coleslaw it was delicious, my grandson said it was much better than Mc Donalds. Now there's praise .

Great atmosphere apart from one old idiot who wanted to fight the world! Would think he'd know better at his age. Served very quickly considering the amount of people in the place. Really enjoyed ourselves.

Sorry I've decided to rewrite my previous review, as at that was done whilst I was pretty angry. Litterally my friend has numerous issues with his health, and is classed as disabled. He was involved in a serious car accident, causing walking issues. He, has serious issue with his lungs, which means he needs oxygen daily, and wears a oxygen mask every night. But to make things even worst he Litterally, has just come away from fighting throat cancer, with cemo, and all that you enjure. Saturday he was able to come out , with a nice catch up. We had only been in three bars, before deciding to head to punch. Now his big mistake, he normally uses chair lifts to get upstairs, but foolish he climbed the stairs to toilet in brain jar. Came back, gasping, we waited till he kind of recovered, and walked towards courts. My two friends went in to get drinks, I sat down expecting him too. But, I then notices the bouncer talking to him outside the street barriers. I asked what was up, he said I'm drunk and cannot come in. I tried to explain to this, really obnoxious, arrogant bouncer, that he wasn't drunk, he had health issues, and he was feeling a bit ill. Wasn't having none of it, just laughed, and then I found myself refused service. I asked if he could sit down, NO . My friends came out, and, then the bouncer, snatched the drinks from the table, walked off laughing, £20 wasted. My other friends tried explaining his issue, at times he does look drunk, red face, lack of oxygen, staggering. Along, not the first time we've had this, but normally others listen. These two, laughed and mocked, Litterally looked to be getting a kick out of the situation. I took a picture, because of his threating posture, of the bald bouncer, In all my years, I've never had anyone so arrogant, that even knowing his illness still mock, laugh at a disabled guy, and because you dared to speak up, also get refused service. Sickening, thought we had weeded out these thugs, and bullies through the council licencing programme, seems not, hope your proud of these throwbacks, PUNCH This is not a place for anyone with disabilities, not one we will visit again

So happy we decided to pop in for lunch there yesterday - we were in the city and the Pride Parade had just started so we thought we'd get something to eat before things got busy. The Punch Hotel looks good inside and out - plenty of character and age. The young lady behind the bar was very welcoming. Foodand drinks were duly ordered. Only a short wait for our lunches to arrive. Totally delicious - well presented & piping hot. Very reasonable prices too! We'd go there again the next time we're in Hull.

probably the best meal i have had out for a while , gorgeous food and massive portions all homemade !! as a family between us we had the glazed chicken baguette, lincolnshire sausage samdwich and the special cottage pie , no complaints atall we loved it all ao thanks !! also the staff are so lovely and helpful will tell friends and family and will be returning 👍🥰

Staff were lovely but the food was awful we had the club sandwich which came with chips it looked nice but the chicken was like rubber and the avocado tasted funny and the bread bun was toasted but extremely hard which made it difficult to eat even with a knife and fork disappointing when you can’t afford to eat out often. It was over £10 for the club sandwich 🧐

Wasn’t sure how good this would be but were pleasantly surprised by not only the Sunday lunch but the very extensive menu. Lovely fresh vegetables, proper roasties and decent Yorkshire pudding and served piping hot. Quick and friendly service by the waitress and also the bar staff. Looking forward to visiting again.

Booked Sunday Lunch for 25 family members, my mums, 70th birthday , we were given a private room and dedicated staff even though the pub was very busy, great communication before hand via face chat and email, great service, everyone had a good time, thanks

Visiting this venue for a birthday celebration on a warm summer evening outside I was repeatedly called a faggot and subjected other homophonic abuse. Disgusting place give this one a miss

Small bottle of bud and a pint of corona £9 Didn’t see a price list before ordering. WONT BE GOING THERE AGAIN. Corona / Bud re 50p a bottle in supermarkets. I understand a profit must be made, but this is a RIP OFF.

Visited with a fairly large group. Food ordered in advance. No long wait. Extremely good staff,very pleasant and efficient. Really good food. Well cooked and lots to choose from. Good atmosphere and welcoming surroundings.

Helpful bar staff and knowledgeable about the building. A good pint of draft Smiths was had. Was quiet inside but outside space crowded, about 1700 hours on Thursday evening. A good experience and will return.

Lovely pub with an outdoor seated area. Went on a Saturday afternoon and it was a lot busier than expected. There was a singer on and everyone joined in was a real party atmosphere. Food is served but only till 3pm so you would need to go early. Worth a visit

Went in here before going to see Paul Weller at Hull bonus arena had a couple of nice pints and was treated to the great music of the modfather

Great pub recently refurbished. Landlord was very friendly and had time to chat with us and made us feel welcome. Lots of people sat eating and the food looked nice. Will be back again.

Was very nice and tidy inside after the recent referb! The family from down south was very impressed with meals - size and taste!! I ordered the Toad-in-thr-hole, wasn't exactly that (see pic) but was very good value for money and very tasty! Service was great too. We called in earlier in the day to book a table for about 5pm but we're told they didn't do booking but the guy said "he would see us alright when we got there"! And he did! Great service, great food. Would highly recommend!

After visiting a few bars and waiting ages to be served with no luck we went in the punch and straight away got welcomed and served with a smile , it was great and I told them that it was the best place to go for food and drink and get served within minutes x

The food was sublime and service was excellent. For all the chaos caused by covid-19, it was still wonderful.

We had a lovely lunch which was truly home made. I had pork loin with mash, veg and onion gravy it was yummy. Food and plates hot, carrots were cooked just right with a slight crunch. My grown up son had lasagna with chips and garlic bread he ate every mouthful! The beer was great too just the right temperature, if it hadn’t been lunchtime would have quite happily had more. If your looking for trendy wine bar bistro this is not the place. What you do get is fantastic traditional pub grub, can throughly recommend.

Voor een middagpauze aangeland in dit café. De buitenzijde roept verwachtingen op maar de binnenzijde heeft zijn beste tijd gehad. De tafels zijn versleten en de rest van het interieur heeft ook wat onderhoud nodig. Groot lichtpunt waren de voortreffelijke onionrings en de fatsoenlijke prijzen. Er is meer uit deze gelegenheid te halen met een beetje aandacht.

Having left less favourable reviews for this place in the past - i wanted a traditional British Sunday lunch and decided to give it a go here. I was not disappointed- it was great !! A small carvery set up 12-4pm. It was excellent in every way- service, quality of food.

It's not cordon bleu, nouvelle cuisine, or a trendy bistro or gastropub. It's just a basic pub selling top quality simple food at very reasonable prices, and large portions. The staff were exceedingly pleasant and helpful, although very busy, and couldn't have been nicer. The food was top quality, piping hot, and didn't cost the earth. From now on, if we're going to a show at City Hall, or Bonus Arena, this is where we will dine first. Can't fault it.

We popped in this city centre pub today as it seemed quite busy early lunchtime. We weren’t disappointed. Good menu choices and minimum waiting for food once ordered. Hubby had homemade lasagne which he described as lovely and him being a chef of 13 years too . Our son chose haddock chips and peas.. well it was more like a whale on a plate and he demolished it but didn’t quite have room for the chips. Personally I would of preferred it skinned if it had been my choice but each to their own. I had hot roast pork sandwich which is served in a baguette with a jug of lovely gravy. Staff were very friendly and cheerful but not at all in your face or asking if everything is ok when you have a mouthful of food. Lovely old pub which was very busy for a Thursday lunchtime. We will definately be going back. (Homemade Yorkshire Pudding looked beaut too)

My partner and I visited this weekend and after reading the reviews on here though we would give it a go. Great decision, we both had the giant Yorkshire pud (home made) I had the roast pork and he had it with minced beef, all served with fresh veg and a choice of potatoes. Nothing frozen or packet, and I should mention the gravy was to die for....Service from the girl behind the bar was friendly and efficient.It is an old fashioned pub, lots of wood and not a speck of dust, would go back if in Hull again.

I called here a couple of weeks ago on the reccomendation of a friend. I ordered a chicken pie from the specials board and a half of lager. During the hour I was in there i never saw the barman smile once in fact he was borderline hostile. the pie when it came was so microwaved it was blazing hot the pasty was wet and flabby. Cabbage wattery. Mash ok. Overall an experience I will never repeat.

This place is probably the best place in hull city Centre for food, tried loads but always return here, service, food everything excellent, can get busy so persevere cos it's worth it

Meeting a friend for tea last Monday evening prior to visiting the New Theatre in Hull we met near to where we had agreed to eat but my friend had gone to the eatery but it was closed. We decided to go to the Punch and had a delicious meal in there and I was so pleased the other venue was closed.

Would just like to thank the staff both up front and behind 4 of us went for a meal one scampi 3 steak pi absolutely amazing good sized portions found this place by mistake will definitely be going back love it thank you yet again

Great pub right in the centre of Hull across from the City Hall. Friendly staff and customers. Good value food and generous portions, good steak pie and chicken pie. Fantastic frontage to the building.

Came for some food and drinks with my dad and cousin. I got the veggie pasta bake which was delicious, and my dad made the bold statement of his lamb shank being the ‘best I’ve ever tasted’. Great food and lovely staff.

Pop in here for a bite to eat when we have been shopping round the town. I always tend to get the prawn salad which is very tasty and large portion. My partner loves the chicken bacon and brie which comes with salad or potatoes. Very reasonable price.

The punch hotel is top of the league for eating out excellent food , excellent staff and a good selection menu, they also have a good selection of beers and other drinks , it can get busy but that tells you how popular it is well worth a visit

Many years since I have visited this pub (in my youth.) now as a pensioner my tastes have changed and prefer a nice afternoon lunch instead of gallons of beer! When we called it was quite busy but we managed to find a table, not like many people who came in. When we saw the food being delivered to the tables around us we knew why it was so busy! Everything looked delicious, piping hot and full plates! Our lunch was well worth the price and we will certainly call again. By the way I defy anyone to finish the enormous filled Yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings.

Went in for a Sunday dinner meat & vegetables cooked to perfection. Also went in on a dinner time for something to eat got the lasagne very nice. Will definitely be eating in there all the time.

Just called for a quick drink having just arrived in Hull. Place was packed with people eating which is normally a good sign. Good service and even a "thank you" on the way out from the bar staff. We'll come back!

When in for a late lunch I had the punch burger my wife the cottage pie. Really god portions and piping hot very tasty to and friendly staff and atmosphere

Popped in here with family on way to the theatre for lunch,could not believe how cheap the food was and what a plateful you got for your money,staff are very pleasant and attentive and we will certainly be returning here soon as back to the theatre in a few weeks time and can’t wait to try something new the next time.

Another fantastic carvery at the Punch. This is the only place I will eat on a Sunday. What a shame Claire is leaving but I am assured that the food will remain the same.

We nearly lived there, foodwise, for more than a week! The homemade lasagne was my husband’s favourite, he had that 3 times on the trot! Highly recommend the Lasagne without saying, Cottage Pie, Steak Pie, Steak and Onion Wrap and the lagers of course - well kept temperature on the Stella!

Thank you Trip Advisor for the recommendation. Whilst out and about in Hull City Centre at lunch time I logged in to search for places to eat as the usual suspects were not appealing. I have lived in Hull for a number of years and never realised The Punch did food. My brother & I decided to give it a go, both opting for the steak pie which came with mash or chips with veg, with a gravy boat to share.

Would highly recommend as never fails food is so nice and not bad prices. Fish chips and a gravey boat every time fantastic.

I come here alot just for the Sunday carvery which is beautifully home made and the gravy is to die for! Food prices here and spot on and the lovely ladies serving the bar and always friendly. Can't wait for my next Sunday sesh in here :-)

Attended on a Friday lunchtime with OH for a sandwich and I ordered a cheese sandwich and OH a hot steak sandwich. It stated on the menu that the hot sandwich selection came with chips for an extra £1. I ordered it with chips and asked for chips with the cheese sandwich for which I was charged a whopping extra £2.95. Two cappuccinos and a bill of just shy of £20 which I think is on the high side for what we had, however the quality of the food was excellent.

Good value meal very good portions,nice food with good service,drinks average price but not over expensive,good position for access to city hall if seeing a show,plenty of seating and standing room if busy. Will visit again as they have a good selection.

Called in for a pub lunch if you are looking for an old fashioned pub serving good pub lunches you cannot go far wrong here. The staff were friendly helpful and service was quick, will go again

Love the food here never disappointed my fav is the chicken, bacon & bri salad with cranberry, if you think salads make you leave hunger try this one you’ll feel full to the brim

We recently visited Hull to go to Hull New Theatre, and wanted to get a meal before the matinee performance started. Wish we had thought to ring up and reserve a table as this gem of an eatery was packed out. When we were finally seated, and served with our meals, we could appreciate why the place was so busy. The lasagne that I had was one of the nicest I have ever had anywhere. Everyone in our party enjoyed their choices too. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to others.

^ of us ate here before going to the theatre each one of us had something different and everyone enjoyed their meal. £47 for 6 of us very reasonable price for good food.

This is a straightforward pub with extra special food at really good prices. Its is a treat to eat here when in town and it never fails to be especially good value. The fish and chips are huge and the scampi and chips is too.

A surprise day trip to Hull for my mother was made even more enjoyable by the outstanding lunch we enjoyed at the Punch. The menu created a pleasant problem in that everything looked tempting but I could not help but fall back on the best...

We went for a meal after visiting Feren`s Art Gallery in Hull. The Punch is next door. My husbands Scampi and Chunky chips were very good. My Steak and Kidney pie was microwaved. Talk about a soggy bottom the pie`s pastry was all soggy. Spoil; the meal completely for me. When I go back I will not be having steak pie

This is my 5th or so visit to the Punch for carvery Sunday lunch. I hadn't been in a while and wondered if it was still as good as it had previously been. I need not have worried. The carvery was extremely busy but the servers and chefs were really up to the task. I had roast beef and all the trimmings . Fresh vegetable, lovely roast potatoes and home made Yorkshire pudding. All in all it was a delight. A great place to eat.

We were eating out before attending a concert at City Hall. Our intention was to go to Leonardos but they were full so we decided to give the Punch a try as it is only a few metres from the venue. We had seen revues which were encouraging and had always meant to eat here. We thought that we might be too late to order, arriving about 5.30 but were lucky that they serve up to 6 pm on Saturdays. Mike chose haddock and chips with mushy peas but had to compromise by having frozen peas and I chose the lasagne which came with chips and salad. The chips were lovely - large, thick and nicely cooked. My salad was baby leaves which by definition tend to be a bit stalky, and they were. My lasagne had a thick coat of melted cheese and a fair amount of meat but the sauce was so salty, I scraped it off. The portion of haddock was very small and thin. Everything was hot and service quick and polite. We were there at a time when there were a few diners and some drinkers and the atmosphere was fine. The jury is out as to whether we will go again. The fish was a disappointment. It was not up to the standard we are used to at other eateries locally. It was an 'ok' meal, but nothing special. By the way, if you go to the ladies, which were clean and well appointed, hope that the last one on your right is vacant! The ones in the middle are so narrow you have to wriggle in around the bin, toilet roll holder, loo and door which runs the risk of your clothes rubbing around the obstacles!

Good old pub. Just enough space as has always had almost every table full when I've been there. Relaxed atmosphere. Handy location- not too far from the station. Views of decorative old buildings out the window. Friendly staff. Best thing about it though is the food- proper pub fare!! Amazing selection, caters pretty well for vegetarians, and huge HUGE portions. My choice- giant Yorkshire pudding, filled with carrots, cabbage, 3 Quorn sausages, a choice of mash, potatoes or chips and served with gravy. Come here with an appetite...

A popular lunchtime spot for a good value traditional style pub lunch. All the usual pub grub served piping hot, friendly service and good value. My favourite is the warm salad with chicken, brie and bacon. Wonderful combination and so much chicken!

16 of us visited the Punch for an evening meal, having booked in advance. The owner went out of her way to accommodate us , as we were unable to arrive until after 6.00pm.
